Marinette groaned as she woke up to the blasting sound of her phone ringing and the now accustomed morning wake-up call from Adrien.

Ever since the trip to New York, the two had become inseparable. It had been like a dream come true. During the time there, the two bonded over how astonishingly the New York heroes were and somehow became best friends from there. The first few hours of their talk were kind of awkward with all of Marinette's stuttering, but after a while, she found herself being able to speak normally with her all-time crush, and Adrien couldn't be happier.

He had always hope Marinette could feel as comfortable with him as she did with the rest of his schoolmates, and it was finally happening. Adrien had to agree with Nino when he had said Marinette was awesome because God was she! She was astonishingly unique, and he knew that now. She was kind, honest, funny, loving, talented, and so much more. It would take him a lifetime to describe her.

That was the turning point and the beginning of a different relationship. From there, the friendship blossomed. After arriving back in Paris, Adrien found himself wanting to spend as much time with Marinette as he could. He would often talk to her at school, and then he would call her only to hear how the rest of her day had been. He would speak of his photoshoots or fencing, make jokes, and sometimes even sneak in a flirtatious comment or two. Not that Marinette would ever notice.

The two had been closer than ever but not as close as they became after receiving the worst news of their lives. Both Alya and Nino were moving. They remember crying together for hours that night. That was the first night Adrien had came over instead of calling. He told her he didn't want to be alone and that she was the only person he knew would understand. That night Marinette welcomed him in with open arms. She did understand. She was also losing her best friend, and she was also in pain.

After that night, things changed for both of them. They grew closer and closer. They went from talking on the phone to constant late-night calls, constant visiting, and alone time lots and lots of alone time. During this time, Marinette found herself losing her crush on the model. She felt at ease. Marinette realized she had pictured Adrien as this perfect model. When in reality, he was far from perfect. He was not only a model, but he was a normal person, with problems and obstacles. He was not perfect, but he was perfectly Adrien. He was her best friend, and she loved him for that.

Learning he was not perfect was the best thing that could have happened. It allowed her to get over her fear and become closer to him. Now that she wasn't thinking of how perfect he was, she could be the friend he needed, and he the friend she wished for him to be as well. Now that Alya and Nino were gone, they only had each other, and she couldn't let a silly crush ruin that for them. That and her now growing crush on the musician and friend Luka Couffaine.

For Adrien, it was different. After the trip to New York, he found himself second-guessing his feelings for the bluenette. During their time in New York, he knew he wanted a friendship with her, but now Adrien wasn't sure that was all he wanted.

Many times did he try to make himself believe that all he needed was her friendship. But then how come he hated when they were distant. Adrien felt the need to talk to her all the time. He found himself wanting to be the first voice she heard in the morning and the last at night before heading to bed. Hense the morning wake-up calls.

These past few nights, Adrien had tried to figure out how he felt. In the end, it all leads him to one conclusion. Adrien was in love with Marinette. Who had he been kidding? The famous teen has loved her since the beginning. Last night, he almost thought of confessing. For a second, he believed Marinette felt the same, that was until she said the words that he hoped he never heard, at least not from her.

"Adrien, you will never believe what happened today!" Marinette spoke excitedly, making him chuckle. "I might if you tell me, princess," Adrien responded, smiling at the thought of his princess happy face at the moment. Little did he know, her following words would hurt him deeply. "Luka asked me out! I have a boyfriend!" Marinette yelled on the phone. Adrien felt his heart crumble. His princess was dating Luka.

"Oh, t-that's great, Marinette," Adrien replied, fighting back the tears. "Yeah, now we need to get you a girl," Marinette stated jokingly. "I guess," Adrien responded. "You guess? Don't you want one?" Marinette asked confusedly. "No," Adrien stated coldly. "Why?" Marinette pried. "I just don't, okay!" Adrien yelled through the phone. He didn't want to shout, yet it was so tough to remain in this conversation knowing damn well that he did want a girlfriend.

Adrien wanted Marinette. He was in love with his best friend, the same best friend who just ripped his heart out by dating Luka. "Adrien, are you okay? I didn't mean to upset you," Marinette whispered on the phone. "You didn't." He lied. "Then are you okay?" "Yes." "Adrien-" "I have to go. I'll talk to you tomorrow."

After the call was over, Adrien finally let the tears fall freely. He should have known he wouldn't be good enough for someone as amazing as Marinette. Adrien had been too late. If only he had spoken sooner. The blonde had questioned his feeling ever since they arrived. Why did he remain quiet? Why didn't he tell her? The blonde knew precisely why. Fear! Fear of her rejection, fear of losing his best friend.

Adrien cried himself to sleep for the first time since his mother's disappearance. He cursed Luka for appearing in their lives. The way the model saw it. Luka was the reason Adrien was forever cursed to be her best friend. As soon as she had mentioned his name, Adrien wanted to end the call right there. The blonde had the desire to tell her to forget he had ever called in the first place.

Adrien felt so hurt, but the male also knew that Marinette would be hurt. Adrien couldn't do that to her. He would have to stick to being her friend and loving her in silence. Maybe one-day things would change. Maybe one day, Marinette would see that he was the only guy for her. Her best friend, lover, and one day husband. If only-

Adrien didn't sleep all night. The blonde cried for hours and toss and turned for the remainder of it. He was sure he had only gotten an hour tops of sleep. To be truthful, he almost didn't call her today. He didn't want to hear how awesome her new boyfriend was or how extraordinary her late-night talk with him had been or even hear how she couldn't hang out later like they had planned because she would go on a date with Luka, which was what would most likely happen, but then he thought of her.

She didn't deserve his silence. She didn't deserve to lose her friend because he couldn't handle seeing her with someone else. No! He would call like he always did, at least to wake her up so she wouldn't be late for school.

Marinette groaned as she heard her phone ring. Was it that time already? She was exhausted. All she wanted was to sleep for a few more hours. She hadn't found any sleep at all last night. She worried about Adrien. For some reason, his usual goodnight call had gone from happy to silent and distant. He hardly responded, and when he did, it was simple answers like yes, no, or even I guess. It all happened so fast. One moment they were laughing and joking and the next he was cold and distant.

Marinette wondered if she had said something wrong, but she couldn't. Even after replaying the conversation in her head, she didn't seem to know what had happened. Adrien would always tell her about his problems. She was his shoulder to cry on, so why didn't he do that now? Why was he pushing her away? Unless it was her, she was the one who did something, but what? What had she done or said that made Adrien act that way. It was unlike him to act that way.

As tired as she was, she couldn't miss this call. Marinette got up quickly and ran towards her phone. She wanted to make sure he was okay. The call last night was awful, and she worried things would not be the same tonight.

"Hello, Adrien?" Marinette spoke on the phone, feeling hopeful that things were back to normal. "Hey," Adrien responded. Marinette sighed at the tone of his voice. Well, there goes the last bit of hope she had. Things were not back to normal. Hey? Hey? Adrien never said a simple hey. No! He would say something like, "Good morning M'Lady" or "Rise and shine, Princess. Your knight is picking you up in 15" or something dorky.

"Adrien, are you okay?" Marinette asked, not being able to handle him acting so cold and distant. "Yup, I was calling to make sure you would wake up on time. I guess I'll see you at school. Bye" "Wai-" Before Marinette could get a word out, Adrien had already hung up the phone.

Feeling deflated, Marinette fell on her bed. She couldn't understand what had happened. Why was Adrien acting this way? Nothing made sense to her. He did not even say good morning. He always walked her to school. Was he not walking her to school today? Marinette took a deep breath as she felt a tear fall on her chest. She hadn't even realized she was crying. She couldn't understand why, but the thought of losing Adrien pained her.

Yesterday, Marinette could swear this would be one hundred percent the happiest week of her life. Alya was coming to visit, and Luka just asked her to be his girlfriend, and she and Adrien were closer than ever, but that wasn't true. Now, it was the worst. From the looks of it, she had lost Adrien. He didn't want to talk to her anymore, and that hurt. No, Marinette refused to lose Adrien. She would speak to him. She would figure out what she did wrong if it was the last thing she did.

Adrien sighed as he ended the call. He had plans to act normal with her, he did, but when he heard her voice, those plans changed. Adrien couldn't do it. He needed time to heal. Adrien needed time to learn how to be okay. The fact that he was only meant to be friends with the love of his life destroyed him, and he needed to get over that.

The truth was that as soon as he had heard her voice. The model felt his heart crack even more. He felt the tears begin to appear once again. He was not certain how he could face her in school if he couldn't even do that over the phone. Even if he learned to pretend to be okay with her and Luka's relationship around her, he knew her new boyfriend meant that their friendship as he knew it was over. They would most likely go back to how it was at the beginning of lycée when the only conversations they had were because of Alya and Nino. But they were gone now. Adrien would have nothing left. No mother, cold father, no best friend. Nothing! Nothing but painfully loving her in silence.
