1983 was a very momentous year full of icons, trends, firsts, and innovations.

Swatch introduces their first watches which become all the rage. The more you collected and wore, the cooler you were. You could also get different colored rubber guards in two styles and mix & match them. Google 1980's Swatch Watches & rubber guards to see all of the awesome designs they had. I LOVED these and had the one with the fish as well as a few others. 😂

Microsoft Word is first released, and the first mobile phones are introduced to the public by the Motorola Company. 

Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space, on the Space Shuttle Challenger and Vanessa Williams becomes the first African-American to be crowned Miss America, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Hurricane Alicia hits the Texas coast, killing 22, and a 5.2 earthquake hits Central New York.

Unemployment rises in the U.S. to 12 million - the highest figure since 1941. The Ethiopian famine death toll reaches 4 million as China's population reaches 1 billion.

The Wah Mee massacre occurs, killing 13 people in an attempted robbery in Seattle, Washington, and the Brinks Mat warehouse robbery at Heathrow Airport occurs, making off with three tons of gold bars valued at $37.5 million.

McDonald's introduces the McNugget, and the video game Mario Bros. is first released as a Nintendo arcade game in Japan. The Mario Bros. game featured the now iconic characters of Mario and his brother Luigi, two plumbers who battle sewer creatures in New York. The game was not initially successful as at the time of its release, but it became a successful series of games after the release of Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) gaming console.

The children's show "Fraggle Rock" debuts on HBO as one of the premium cable network's first original programs, and was created and produced by Jim Henson. It focused on the interactions between a group of muppets called Fraggles and other groups within their world. Many of the episodes featured stories that revolved around conflicts between the Fraggles and the other groups despite the fact that they all depended on each other to survive. Fraggle Rock had a total of 96 episodes and ran until 1987. The show's creators had hoped it would promote concepts of world peace and it was shown around the world, in nearly one hundred different countries. I absolutely loved this show!   

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program launched in U.S. while Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel was spending $2,500 a month on rubber bands just to hold all of their cash.

"Freeway" Rick Ross, a cocaine kingpin in Los Angeles, was at one point making $2-3 million a week. He was illiterate and his cocaine supplier was the CIA, who sold cocaine to illegally finance the Nicaraguan Contras. The nickname "Freeway" came from Ross owning properties next to Interstate 110. According to an October 2013 Esquire magazine article, "Between 1982 and 1989, federal prosecutors estimated Ross bought and resold several metric tons of cocaine," with Ross' gross revenue claimed to be more than $900 million ($3 billion today) and profits of almost $300 million ($900 million today). During the height of his drug dealing, Ross was said to have sold "$3 million in one day." According to the Oakland Tribune, "In the course of his rise, prosecutors estimate that Ross exported several tons of cocaine to New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and made more than $600 million between 1983 and 1984."

Rocker Eddie Van Halen, of the band Van Halen, played solo guitar on Michael Jackson's song Beat It.

Iconic movies such as Return of the Jedi, Scarface, Flashdance, Risky Business, Trading Places, Mr. Mom, National Lampoon's Vacation, Superman III, & Cujo hit the theaters.
