Chapter 9

Sayuri was moping through the halls of the mafia headquarters when Dazai saw her coming towards him.

"What's got you all bummed out?" Dazai spoke up as he stopped in front of her.

"The boss has me lined up for a new assignment and I don't wanna do it," Sayu grumbled as she looked up at Dazai, her cheeks puffed up.

"Normally you love going on assignments. Not like you to pass up a good fight," Dazai commented with a quirked brow.

Sayu groaned as she threw her head back. "He wants me to act as security for one of the investors for the front company. Apparently there was intel that there would be an attempt on his life at the upcoming charity event. I'm an assassin! I don't protect people! I kill them!"

Dazai couldn't help but chuckle a bit. "I'm sure you'll be fine. You may still get to kill someone in the long run."

"At the rate this is going, that someone will be Mori," Sayu grumbled as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"Aww. You're so cute when you're upset," Dazai teased as he pinched her puffy cheeks.

"Shut up!" Sayuri smacked his hands away from her face with a glare. "I'll kill you! And it won't be painless!"

"You couldn't hurt me," Dazai spoke with a grin. "I'm too important to you."

"Keep testing your luck there, buddy. I'm itching to shoot someone and currently you're in the way."

"I could come with you on your assignment if you want," Dazai offered as he turned to walk with her.

Sayuri sighed as she slumped a bit. "You don't have to, but I won't say no."

"Then I'll help!" Dazai replied cheerfully. "It'll be like old times! We haven't gone on an assignment together in a while with just the two of us."

"That also means that you have to dress nice," Sayuri remarked, nudged him with her elbow.

"I always dress nice!" Dazai retorted quickly.

"No jacket. Just wear a suit and wash your hair. You look like you haven't showered in weeks," Sayuri added as she continued walking.

"Two weeks to be exact."

Sayuri's face scrunched up. "That's disgusting, Osa! You should shower every day! Get away from me! You're gross!"

"Aww, you're gonna hurt my feelings," Dazai whined playfully.

"What feelings?" Sayuri shot back.

"Ouch. That was cold. I have feelings you know."

"I don't believe you," Sayu replied with a grimace.

Dazai gasped in shock as he gripped his chest. "You wound me! How can you sat I have no feelings when I'm so in love with you!"

Sayuri grimaced as he slung his around her neck from the side. "Get off me, you suicidal oaf!"

Dazai dropped his head and whined. "My beautiful angel of death has rejected my love! My life is over!"

"You had a life to begin with?" Sayuri teased, opening the door to leave the mafia headquarters.

The brunette drooped sadly. "You're so mean."

"Only 'cause I love ya," Sayu replied as she nudged him. "Now go grab clean clothes and meet me at my place. You are taking a shower, even if I have to scrub you down myself."

"Are you offering? I won't say no to showering with a beautiful woman," Dazai said quickly.

"Don't push your luck," Sayuri grumbled, but she couldn't help but smile at his antics.

As Dazai walked away to grab a change of clothes he was smiling a little. He knew he could always cheer her up from a bad mood.

Sayuri was finishing up her eyeliner, making sure it was sharp enough to kill a man. Dazai walked into her room with a lopsided smile.

"Are you happy? I'm nice and clean," Dazai said as he crossed his arms over his chest.

"Yes, thank you," Sayuri replied as she chuckled. "I'm almost done. Just give me a minute."

Dazai stopped down on her bed as he waited for her to finish her nitpicking. He had his eyes rested closed.

"I'm ready."

He opened his eyes to see her standing over him. Her studied her face and hummed.

Sayuri saw his gaze picking her apart and it made her frown. "What? Is it too much? We're going to a charity event, and I thought it looked-"

"It looks fine. Come on," Dazai said as he sat up, pushing himself to his feet.

Sayuri followed him out of the room and they left the apartment.

A car was outside that would drive them to the client's home, and then to the event. They sat in the backseat in silence.

Sayu kept fiddling with her suit as she sat, staring at her lap quietly.

"You don't need to be nervous. We're gonna be fine," Dazai mumbled.

"I know that. I'm not nervous about the job. I'm just worried that I don't look right," Sayuru admitted, futzing with her ponytail.

Dazai gave her a quizzical look. "That's what you're worried about? We're going to stop a man from being assassinated and you're worried about looking good?"

"What else would I be worried about? Like you said, we're going to be fine," Sayuri replied as she finally lowered her hands to her lap.

"Why are you worried?" Dazai questioned, staring at her with utter confusion.

"Well, you looked like you didn't like the look I went with," Sayu said with a frown.

Dazai couldn't help but laugh as he shook his head. "You look the same as always! You just chose a brighter shade of red then normal and it threw me off."

"Is it bad? Should I tone it down?" She asked quickly.

"Sayuri, everyone will think you are beautiful," Dazai answered as he nudged her.

"I don't care what everyone else thinks! I care what you think." Sayuri looked at him with a pout.

"I think you're very beautiful, Sayu. I always think so," Dazai replied while giving her a bright smile. "I told you earlier that you were beautiful, too."

"Today was the first time you ever called me beautiful. How was I supposed to know what you think? I can almost never tell what you're thinking," Sayuri remarked as a light blush dusted her cheeks.

Dazai chuckled lightly. "Would you like me to say it more often?"

"It wouldn't be a bad thing," Sayuri admitted.

"I can't believe you really care what I think," Dazai said with a lopsided grin. "Me of all people."

"Of course I care what you think. You're my best friend. Your opinions are important to me," Sayuri responded.

That made Dazai pause but his lips curled into a small smile. "Well then, what does my best friend think of what I look like?"

"I'm just glad that I got you to shower so you don't smell like the dumpster you live in," Sayuri spoke, shooting him a grin.

Dazai pouted and was about to make a comment when Sayuri leaned over and kissed his cheek. It was a warm sensation and he immediately missed the feeling as soon as it was gone but he just looked at her with a slightly surprised expression.

"You're very handsome, Osa," Sayu replied as the car finally pulled up to the house of the client.

Immediately, they were both in work mode as if a switch had been flipped.

Sayuri stepped out of the car and approached the man who was waiting for them. "Good evening. You must be Mr Yagi, yes?"

"Yes. And you are?" The black haired man replied.

"My name is Oda. The boss sent me to accompany you as your security detail for the night. My colleague will also be joining us," Sayuri spoke calmly.

"He sent you? You're just a child," Yagi replied, raising a brow as he studied her.

"I assure you, I am fully capable of protecting you from any attempts on your life this evening," Sayu said, her expression not wavering once.

Yagi hummed before he held out his hand. "I trust that Mr Mori put me in capable hands. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Oda. I appreciate you taking on this task."

"Of course. Now, right this way, if you would." Sayuri led Mr Yagi to the car, opening the door to let him in the backseat beside Dazai. She slid in beside him, leaving the business man in between her and her counterpart. She then looked to the driver and gave a nod. "We're ready."

The car took off for the venue of the charity event and they all rode in silence.

Once arriving at the event, Sayuri opened the car door, letting Mr Yagi out of the car after receiving a nod from Dazai.

After Yagi exited the car, Dazai followed. The two mafia members walked beside the business man as they entered the venue.

It was an extravagant building with a fairly open floor plan. There was a bar along one wall where people were already beginning to indulge. Many tables filled the room and there were four large buffet tables. On the opposite side of the room was a giant silent auction table.

Sayuri scanned her surroundings and memorized the exits and other obstacles. Her phone buzzed and she glanced down to see that Dazai had sent her a message.

Dumpster boy
There's more than one

She looked up and they locked eyes for a moment as her gaze asked him a hundred questions.

Dumpster Boy
Just trust me ;)

Sayuri huffed but gave a curt nod. She walked with Mr Yagi as he began conversing with acquaintances and friends.

She was extremely bored already. She glanced to the side and noticed that Dazai was no longer there. Her back straightened and she whipped her head around to find him stuffing his face at the dessert table which made her groan.

She tried not to pay attention to her partner, but couldn't help the frown that fell over her face when he approached a beautiful woman.

When Mr Yagi moved to go sit at a table, she followed, turning her gaze from Dazai. She stood behind Yagi while he spoke with some other members from the front company.

Sayuri's face had cemented into a scowl as she tried to focus on her assignment. But goddammit, she couldn't stop thinking about Dazai talking to that other woman.

Dazai glanced to his right and saw a woman walking past them. His eyes narrowed and he immediately left his position and followed her towards the buffet table.

He made his way to the desserts and grabbed a brownie before looking up to make eye contact with the girl. She had black hair that was slicked back into a fancy braid. She wore a suit with a corset top underneath and makeup that made her hazel eyes pop.

He walked up beside her and gave a cheerful smile. "And what's a beautiful woman like you doing in a dump like this?"

"Hmm, very original," the woman replied but gave a light laugh.

"Ah, but you laughed, so it worked," Dazai pointed out with a wink.

"I guess you're right. So what's your name?" The lady asked curiously.

Dazai took a bit of the brownie in his hand and then smiled again. "My name is Osamu Oda."

"One of the Oda siblings?" The woman asked as her eyes narrowed ever so slightly.

He hadn't expecting that answer, but it made him laugh. "No, no. Not me. I don't know if I could kill anyone. I have a gun for protection, but killing someone is a terrifying thought."

She seemed to study his expression, satisfied with the answer she got. "Sorry, I guess that was a strange assumption. My name is Murasaki Shikibu."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, m'lady. And may I say that you are looking absolutely stunning this evening. Like a petal in the midnight moon," Dazai flirted as he gently grasped her hand, lifting it up with his own.

Shikibu struggled to find her words as her face was painted red.

"I think it would be a shame for you to leave this wonderful party by yourself tonight," Dazai continued, stroking the back of her hand.

He glanced over to see Sayuri glaring at the air while standing behind the man they were to be protecting. Her cheeks were puffed up the way they always did when she was upset.

Dazai then leaned closer to Shikibu with a grin. "It would be a shame if you were able to leave at all."

Shikibu was caught off guard as Dazai ripped the gun from her hidden holster and shot her side.

At the sound of the gunshot, everyone in the room began to panic.

"You lied," Shikibu whimpered as she clutched her sidewhule everyone ran for an exit. "You are one of the Oda siblings."

"Oh I lied, but not about that. I'm not one of the Oda siblings," Dazai replied, as he held the gun to her head. "You aren't worthy of Sayuri's time."

He pulled the trigger before the lady could reply, watching with satisfaction as she fell limp. The glass look in her lifeless eyes was beautiful to him. The blood spilling from her head only enhanced that beauty.

"What are you doing?!"

Dazai turned to see Sayuri as she grabbed his arm. "One is down. There are two more. Where's Yagi?"

"He's under the bar for the moment. I figured that the assassins would look for him in the crowd, thinking he would use that for cover," Sayuri replied quickly.

"You're smarter than you let on," Dazai complimented with a grin. "I must be running off on you. That'll take care of one of the assassins. We need to take care of the other one."

"Find him and I'll take the shot," Sayuri replied as she pointed her pistol down at Shikibu's corpse. She shot her in the face twice before turning away. "I didn't like her."

"Aww, you were jealous," Dazai teased, skipping after her.

"Shut up," Sayu grumbled.

"Did you want me to flirt with you instead? I could have that arranged if you'd like," Dazai continued to egg her on.

"You better flatter me then," Sayuri shot right back as she turned, stepping closer to him. "I don't know if you'd be able to handle all of me, pretty boy."

She kissed her finger tips and then tapped his chest before turning back towards the bar to get Mr Yagi somewhere safer.

Dazai was slightly stunned, but admittedly a little excited.

"Oh, it is game on now, angel."
