Chapter 7
Chuuya sat on the gravestone that marked where Rando had been buried and he sighed.
"Even in death you're a real pain in the ass," he grumbled, staring out at the sea as he complained. "Of course, the Port Mafia confiscated all the records you'd collected on Arahabaki. So I'm back to square one."
He just closed his eyes and slumped a bit. He felt so lost.
"Well, even if you were alive, you probably wouldn't have told anyone about that stuff anyway." Chuuya swung his legs around to turn away from the water. He jumped off the grave and began walking away from the pier. "I'll be back."
He kept his hands shoved deep in his pockets as he watched ground while he walked.
"There you are, Chuuya," a voice came and Chuuya looked up to see his friend from the Sheep.
"Shirase? What are you doing here?" Chuuya questioned as he stopped in his tracks.
"I wanted to come and apologize to you," Shirase spoke with a warm smile as he walked towards Chuuya slowly. "We did some soul searching after what happened. We have a good handle on what the Sheep's problems are now. So we all talked it over and agreed on what the solution was."
As Shirase walked past Chuuya, the ginger looked over his shoulder and began to turn around completely.
"If you decided it together, I won't-"
There was a sharp pain that erupted in Chuuya's side and he grunted as he stumbled backyards, landing on his butt.
"We'd wait until you let your guard down, then go ahead and move in for the kill," Shirase explained the plane as his lips pulled into a malicious grin. "That way you wouldn't have time to use your ability. That makes sense, right, Chuuya?"
Chuuya grit his teeth as he glared at Shirase. "What are you doing?"
"It's no use struggling," Shirase remarked. "I rubbed rat poison on the blade. You'll go numb soon and you won't be able move. It's only because you're so damn powerful. Otherwise we wouldn't have had to do it this way!"
From behind Shirase, armed soldiers popped out of the bushes. Chuuya counted seven of the men and he realized that he was in a really bad position. Then the members of the Sheep came forward beside the armed men and Chuuya felt the betrayal sink in.
"All of you?!" Chuuya cried, sweat dripping from his temple.
"This is the answer we agreed on," Shirase spoke as he glared down at Chuuya. "We're teaming up with the GSS. We all came to realize the terrible truth- that if you were really gonna join the Port Mafia, it'd end up getting each and every one of us killed!"
"I would never betray the organization!" Chuuya cried out before wincing in pain.
Shirase simply ignored his former friend. "The GSS doesn't change its alliances on a whim like you do. They can be trusted as long as they make money. This is the smartest thing that we can do! It's the best way to wipe out the Port Mafia!"
Chuuya thought back to what Sayuri had said to him. He should've taken her advice and just walked away when he had the chance. But these were his friends. His family. At least he had thought so.
Tears pooled in the ginger's eyes as he stared at the ground. He felt more alone than he had ever felt before. "It looks like... I was just a fool."
He activated his ability, increasing his own gravitational pull against the earth which broke the ground beneath him. He went sliding down the side of the cliff towards the sea as the GSS members opened fire, trying to finish him off.
The shooting ceased after a moment and Chuuya pressed himself against the rocks as he clutched his side.
"Go find him right now! He may be weakened by the poison, but it won't be enough to kill him! So finish the job!" Shirase called from above.
Chuuya gripped the handle of the blade that was lodged in his side, yanking it out with a hiss of pain.
His blood covered the blade as he threw it to the side, clenching his eyes closed as the pain only increased.
"Their 'leader' my ass..." Chuuya groaned. "All I was doing was holding the organization back."
"Hey there, Chuuya!"
Chuuya felt his body go cold as he heard that annoying voice.
"You look like you're in a bind," Dazai teased as he squatted on a rock not far from Chuuya.
There was a large group of men that stood behind Dazai, all dressed in suits.
"What are you doing here, you piece of shit?" Chuuya grumbled as he glared at the brunette. "You wanna join the festivities and kill me, too?"
"As enticing as that sounds, Sayu wouldn't like it very much if I killed you," Dazai complained. "Mori sent me with a message. He wants me to officially invite you to be a member of the Port Mafia."
"In return for saving my life? Is that it?"
"Uh, I don't even really care which you choose. I'm just here for the bloodbath," Dazai admitted with a shrug. "Mori is a pretty demanding employer. The moment I joined the Port Mafia, he put me in charge of the army. Now that two of our enemies, the GSS and the Sheep, have formed an alliance, we have to shut them down before they become completely coordinated. If I do my job, by noon today, they'll all be dead."
Chuuya's glare hardened as he activated his ability. "You'd actually hurt those kids?"
"Our policy never changes. That said, there is another possibility," Dazai remarked as he looked up at Chuuya with an emotionless face. "If someone who was familiar with the enemy asked me not to go through with it, I would take that under advisement."
"Someone on your team, you mean?" Chuuya questioned, his ability deactivating as he considered the proposal.
"Right," Dazai confirmed. "A fellow colleague in the Port Mafia. I could trust the suggestion of one of my own."
"So you wanna make a deal," Chuuya grumbled. "You really are the devil."
"Don't forget though that I won those games we made bets on together," Dazai reminded as his lips curled into a grin. "You'll be working for me in this organization and I have every intention of working you to the bone."
"I'm gonna tear you to shreds one day," Chuuya sneered dangerously as he plotted the death of the suicidal bastard.
"I like the look in your eyes. Like a wild beast," Dazai purred with satisfaction.
Chuuya knew that this was the only thing he could do. He hated the idea of doing anything for the Port Mafia or Dazai, but the Sheep was still his family no matter what. "Just don't kill the children."
"Very well," Dazai replied before standing up and looking to his men. "Listen up, everyone. As we discussed earlier, none of the kids are to be harmed."
"I see," Chuuya muttered under his breath. "He knew this was gonna happen and planned accordingly. It all started when he made that phone call at the arcade!"
The sound of gunfire rang out through the air as Chuuya slumped forward. Everything was coming together for him.
"He purposefully did that in front of my people to spread doubt. That damn son of a bitch. If that's how you wanna play it, I'm in."
"Good God, I thought we would never escape from that mackerel," Chuuya whined as he trudged along beside Sayuri.
The auburn haired assassin snickered in amusement. "Oh, come on. He's not that bad."
"Not that bad?! You're just saying that because you like him! He's annoying and absolutely insufferable!"
"Well, I want to introduce you to some people who you may think are less insufferable," Sayuri spoke, leading him out of the mafia headquarters.
"Huh? Friends of yours?" Chuuya assumed as he calmed down a bit.
"Not really. I mean, Doc is cool and I've worked with Iceman before. He's pretty quite and is actually a really sweet guy. The rest of them I only really know in passing. I think Piano Man is really cool though. Best dressed in the mafia if you ask me."
Chuuya quirked a brow at the weird nicknames she listed. He wasn't sure how he felt about this yet, but he trusted Sayuri so he followed.
The two hopped into a waiting car that took them towards a residential part of town.
Chuuya watched the world go by, memorizing the direction they had taken. He noticed that they had entered a quieter part of the city. There weren't many people on the sidewalks and any cars that passed were few and far between.
They pulled up to a building with a sign on it that read Old World.
"Here we are!" Sayuri announced before steeping out of the car.
Chuuya quietly followed Sayuri as she walked up to the door.
After knocking on the door, Sayu waited while rocking on her feet. The door opened and there was a man with sunglasses sitting on top of his head and unkempt blonde hair that fell over his shoulder in a braid.
"Hey, we're closed. You can come back later if you want," the guy spoke calmly.
"I'm actually looking for Piano Man," Sayuri said cheerfully.
The blonde looked at her curiously. "What do you want with him?"
"Who is it, Albatross?" Another voice came from inside.
"Not sure," the blonde replied as he looked back inside. "This girl wants to see Piano Man."
"Tell him it's Oda," Sayuri said and Chuuya studied the man at the door.
He was wearing a sleeveless hooded jacket over a long sleeve shirt and his pants had definitely seen better days.
"Hey, Piano! Some girl called Oda wants to see ya!" The guy shouted deeper into the building.
"Oda? Let her in," came a more familiar voice.
The blonde opened the door all the way. "Alright then. Come on in, I guess."
Chuuya followed close behind Sayuri, taking in his surroundings while keeping his hands dug into his pockets.
"Hey, Oda. Is this the new kid?"
Chuuya looked to see Piano Man walking over to them with a smile.
"Yep! This is Chuuya Nakahara!" Sayuri introduced as she nudged the ginger lightly.
"New kid? You never said anything about a new kid," a new voice came from the left. The guy had short dark hair and a few scars on his face. He wore a white doctors coat as he sat with his legs crossed.
"He's new in the mafia and the boss wants you guys to show him the ropes," Sayuri spoke with a smile.
"Sayuri?"
Sayu turned to see a familiar face and her face brightened. "Ice! It's been a while!"
Chuuya turned to see another new face. This man had scar over his right eye that remained closed. His hair was swept a bit to the side and his clothes were a bit plain but still nice.
"So you're Sayuri Oda then, huh? The younger Oda sibling," the blonde man realized. "You're a lot prettier than I thought you would be."
"Aww, you're so sweet," Sayuri gushed. "You're pretty handsome yourself."
"Quit it, Albatross," Piano Man scolded as he flicked the blonde.
"Hey! You swept up the last pretty girl that came around! I think it's my turn," Albatross complained as he crossed his arms before grumbling under his breath. "I can't even believe that Zoe fell for your ugly ass."
"I heard that!" Piano Man glared which made Albatross stick his tongue out. "Anyways, it's a pleasure to meet you Chuuya. You can call me Piano Man. Over there is Doc, scarface over here is Iceman, and this asshole is Albatross. We have another member, but he's working right now. His name is Lippman."
"Nice to meet ya," Chuuya spoke with a slight nod.
"Please be nice to him, guys. He's my best friend now and I will kill you if I find out you upset him," Sayuri threatened as her eyes narrowed. "Is that clear?"
Even though every one in the room was skilled in combat, the icy glare that Sayu gave made everyone freeze up.
"Crystal clear, ma'am," Albatross said as he gulped.
"Good," Sayu said as he cheerful demeanor returned in the blink of an eye. "I'll leave him with you guys so you can get acquainted. See ya, Chuuya!"
Sayuri bounced out of the pool hall and everyone watched her, Chuuya and Iceman completely unfazed while the others stared in confusion.
"Is she always like that?" Albatross questioned.
Chuuya turned to the blonde with a short laugh. "Yeah."
