Chapter 10

"Shiki's down. What do we do now, Yukio?"

Yukio brandished his knife as he scanned the crowd for the target. "Forget her. She clearly wasn't as skilled as she needed to be. We just need to find Yagi and take him out. That's our only job."

"Got it, but I don't see him. I don't see the girl he was with either," the boy said as he looked at Yukio.

Yukio ran a hand through his silver hair and grit his teeth. "They knew we were coming. There has to have been a spy from the mafia."

"Why do you think that? There doesn't seem to be much of a plan in place," the ginger boy replied. "But I guess they did make the first move. How did they even figure Shiki out?"

"I don't know, but the boss is not gonna be happy if we don't kill Yagi. Kenzo, find that girl. If you find her, I'm sure you'll find Yagi. Don't hesitate to kill both of them."

"You got it, Yukio," Kenzo said before leaping off the roof they were sat on.

Sayuri brought Mr Yagi to the back alley as she covered his six.

"I've already called for a ride to pick us up. We just have to get there in one piece and we'll be fine," Sayu said as they ran.

She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. The shadows in the area were speaking to her.

There was someone approaching them.

"Osamu, duck!" Sayuri cried as she reacted as fast as she could.

Her priority was making sure Yagi didn't get hit as the shot was fired. She heard the gun go off, but didn't see it pass them.

She turned to Dazai and saw him gripping his side. Her heart started racing when she saw the blood pouring onto his suit.

"Get Yagi to the car!" Sayuri ordered with gritted teeth.

"Sayu, we should all-"

"Go. I'm gonna take care of this prick," Sayuri shot back, running off towards where the shot was fired.

Dazai cursed under his breath, but he knew she would be fine on her own. He gripped his side but grabbed onto Yagi's suit jacket. "This way."

The two men turned the corner as Sayuri grasped her pistol tight in her hands.

She heard the cocking of a gun and she stepped on a shadow, melting away.

She heard a voice swear quietly. She stepped out of the shadows and shot at a corner, trying to pinpoint the shooter's location. When the shot hit the wall, the shadows moved and she smirked.

She moved to stand by the wall, keeping her gun aimed down by her waist.

She saw a ginger boy peek out only for a moment and without hesitation, she shot him, point blank.

He fell to the ground, blood pouring from his stomach.

"I know there's more of you. Where's your radio?" Sayuri demanded, making use of what life he had left.

The ginger slowly shook his head as blood began trickling from his lips.

Sayuri's glare turned icy as she pressed her foot to his stomach. "I don't feel like searching a corpse, but I will if I have to."

The boy stayed quiet, tears trickling from his eyes.

"You've got resolve. I respect that, so I'll give you a quick death," Sayuri replied and she could see the relief flood the boys face before she shot him between the eyes.

She immediately bent down to pat down the corpse beneath her, feeling the radio that he had in his jacket. She grabbed it and stood up.

"You've got a lot of nerve sending a kid in to do your dirty work for you," she growled through the communicator.

There was a slight crackle from the radio before the voice replied, "whatever it takes to get the job done."

"Well you failed. And you'll keep failing. The Port Mafia won't bend, nor will it ever break. As a fellow assassin, I know how this game goes. Tell me your employer and I'll kill them myself, that way you don't have to deal with any guff."

"Oh, a fell assassin. Saving a life instead of taking it, eh?"

"Whatever the boss requires," Sayuri replied.

"I to do whatever my boss-"

The line went dead and Sayuri jumped slightly as a head fell from the roof above her.

"Hey there, Oda," a voice came from above her.

She looked up to see Piano Man standing on the roof with a smile.

"Piano?" She questioned as he jumped down the fire escape.

"I came along with Albatross to pick you and the client up. Dazai said you were back here. I just came to see the famous Sayuri Oda at work. Gotta say, I'm impressed," Piano Man said with a grin.

"How's Osa? He was hit," Sayuri said quickly. It had been distracting her the whole time. She was extremely worried.

"He's fine. It was a good knick, but nothing that needs any emergency tending to," Piano assured her. "Come on. The others are waiting for you."

"Why didn't you guys just leave without me? I would've been fine!" Sayuri groaned as they began running to the car.

"You try telling Dazai to leave you behind!"

Sayuri snorted a laughing as they kept running. Once the car was in view, Sayu saw Dazai leaning against the door.

"You were supposed to get Yagi out of here, dumbass!" Sayuri scolded.

"Then how were you getting back?!" Dazai shouted right back as he grimaced.

"I would've figured it out!" Sayuri immediately took his suit jacket off of him without warning.

"Woah, sweetheart. Not in public," Dazai teased with a pained chuckle.

"Shut up, asshole," Sayu grumbled as she lifted the side of his shirt up, checking his wound.

Dazai could see the worry on her face and he grabbed her hand. "I'm fine, Sayu. I promise. I've got plenty of scars. One more isn't gonna make a difference."

"I should've been able to protect you though," Sayu mumbled.

"She did say she would kill anyone who tries to touch you. She held to that one," Piano Man said with a chuckle. "We should get going. We can take you to the pool hall. Doc should be able to patch you up quick."

"Great, but first we have to get Mr Yagi back home. If more assassins come for him there, it's not my problem," Sayuri said letting go of Dazai's shirt.

"Gotta say, that was one shitty charity event," Dazai joked as he put a childish grin on his face.

Sayuri chuckled lightly. "Get in the car."

"Yes, ma'am," Dazai replied cheerfully.

Sayuri sat beside Chuuya at the small bar in the pool hall and looked up at Iceman who was on the otherside.

"Would you like me to get you something?" Iceman offered.

"I'll take a glass of Jager, please. Over ice, if you would please," Sayuri replied which made Chuuya raise a brow.

"Jager? I don't think I've tried that," the ginger spoke as he watched Iceman pour her drink.

Sayuri hummed, taking her glass from her fellow hit man when it was ready. "Take a sip."

She set the glass in front of Chuuya and he shrugged before grabbing the glass and bringing it to his lips. He took a small sip and leaned back a bit as he took in the flavor.

"So?" Sayuri questioned.

"It tastes almost like black licorice. I kinda like it," Chuuya admitted as he handed her drink back.

"You guys are disgusting," Doc said as he came out to the bar with Dazai who was freshly bandaged from his wound. "Jagermeister is one of the worst drinks I've ever tried."

Dazai chuckled as he shook his head. "That girl will eat almost anything. She could eat a ghost pepper and think it was sweet."

"Listen, if you can't handle the spice of some good food, how are you gonna handle the spice of a good woman," Sayuri shot at him with a grin.

"Oh, I'm sure I'll manage," he replied, sitting beside her at the bar.

"Will you? You wanna test that out?: Sayuri teased as she leaned closer to him.

"If you're gonna flirt, please do it elsewhere. You'll make me lose my dinner," Chuuya grumbled.

Sayuri huffed with a frown. "Fine."

"Guys, the house is about to open. You wanna stay and hang out?" Piano Man offered as he leaned against one of the pool tables.

"I would love to, but I have to get home. My brother worries about me," Sayuri replied after finishing her glass.

"I'm gonna go, too. This isn't really my scene," Dazai added. "Thanks for patching me up, Doc."

"Anytime, Dazai," Doc remarked with a nod.

Sayuri and Dazai left the pool house after saying goodbye and began walking down the street.

"Saku is on his way to pick us up," Sayuri spoke after looking at her phone.

Dazai looked at her with a playful pout. "Aww, you don't want to take a nice little walk with me?"

"Excuse me, but you got shot today. You should be resting," Sayuri said harshly.

"Were you worried?" Dazai teased, giving a little chuckle.

"Of course I was!" She admitted. "I always worry about you. I worry that I'll walk into your little container and find you dead from some stupid suicide, or whenever you're sent on an assignment without me. You're always so reckless with your life and I'm not always gonna be there to stop you from dying in some stupid way."

Dazai stopped in his tracks and grabbed Sayuri's hand. He made her look at him, allowing himself to study the look in her eyes. "Hey, I'm only reckless if I can be. And this time it was only a flesh wound. You don't need to worry about me getting killed, okay?"

"But I do worry. You are important to me. I'll always worry about you," Sayuri said, her voice softer than before.

"No one is gonna take me out. When I die, it'll be of my own accord," Dazai replied before pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "But for now, you're stuck with me."

Sayuri smiled a bit before a car pull up on the side of the road. She saw Sakunosuke in the driver's seat and she perked up.

"Come on. We should both get some rest," Dazai said, moving towards the car.

The two hopped into the backseat and Saku smiled at his sister.

"So, how'd it go?" He asked as he pulled away from the curb.

"Other than someone getting shot, it was a success," Sayuri answered proudly.

"Listen, it's not like I got shot on purpose," Dazai grumbled as he crossed his arms.

Sayuri looked at him with a small smile, a bit more relaxed now.

They drovetowards the dump as Sayuri told Sakunosuke about what had happened since this assignment wasn't classified.

Once at the Yokohama dump, Sakunosuke parked the car.

"Hey, if you need any painkillers or anything, let me know," Sayuri said as she looked at him with a serious look. "And get some rest. You need it."

"Will do," Dazai replied before hopping out of the car. He watched the two siblings leave after Sayuri climbed into the passenger seat from over the center console.

He sighed quietly before turning to walk into the dump he called home. He kicked a few cans out of his way and made his way to his shipping container, any joy on his face had completely disappeared.

He opened the metal door to his crooked home and walked inside. He walked over to his bed and kicked off his shoes before slipping off the suit jacket he was wearing.

He looked down at the shirt he was wearing that was bow stained with blood and had a hole where the bullet had torn through.

Dazai looked at the hole for a moment in utter silence before unbuttoning the shirt. He took it off and just flopped backwards on his bed.

He thought back to what Sayuri had saidand found his lips curling upwards ever so slightly. Even just thinking about her made him feel warm. He wasn't sure exactly why, nor did he really care to find out.

He just knew that it was nice and he looked forward to feeling that warmth every time he saw the beautiful auburn haired assassin.
