Chapter 1
"Dazai. I want you to meet one of the Oda siblings," the tall dark haired man spoke as he watched the younger of the two siblings walk into his office.
Dazai stood there quietly as he looked at this new stranger.
"This is Sayuri Oda. She is a skilled gifted assassin."
Sayuri waved with a grin. "Hiya! So your name is Dazai? Nice to meet ya!"
She approached him carelessly and held out a hand.
Dazai raised an eyebrow as he saw the way she seemed to have her guard completely down. He moved quickly to knock her hand down and grab her other arm but she practically disappeared from his view before he felt a knife pressed to his throat.
"Nice try," her voice came through behind him. "You're quick. I like him, boss. He's good."
Sayuri made her way around to his front and set her hands on her hips with a smile.
"I'm glad you approve. He is my protégé and will be taking over the mafia's military force. You may need to work together in the future so I hope you both get along," Mori spoke as he crossed his hand in front of his mouth. "Now, I need you to look into something for me. One of our stores has been coming in short on payments. I need that fixed immediately."
"Consider it done," Sayuri replied, finally taking her eyes off of Dazai for the first time since stepping in the room.
Dazai quickly got the sense that this young girl really was deadly, regardless of how she came across at first.
Once the girl exited the room to carry out her assignment, Dazai shoved his hands into his pockets.
"Thoughts?" Mori broke the brunette from his thoughts.
Dazai just shrugged quietly. "She seems good. Barely took her eyes off me. She's fast."
"She is quite precious, isn't she?" Mori sighed softly before frowning. "I wish I could play with her..."
"Is she normally so cheerful?"
Mori hummed as he leaned back in his chair. "Sometimes. Though, if you get on her bad side, you will know. I'm sure you two will get along just fine."
"If you say so," Dazai replied.
He didn't really have an opinion on much. He just knew that he had to do whatever he needed to do to live. Though the thought of living made him question himself more.
What was living? Was there any value in life if it was always meant to come to an end? And was he truly living? Or just surviving?
Sayuri pranced through the hall beside Koyo as she explained a weird dream she had to her.
"Yeah! And the boat somehow got loose from the dock and sped off! They left me behind! But then the geese came back in and attacked the boat! It started to sink and then I woke up!"
Koyo looked at her protégé with a chuckle as she shook her head. "You have the weirdest dreams."
"I think it's fun! Better then having bad dreams, right?" Sayuri replied, grinning as she opened the door to the records room.
There was a familiar brunette boy who was grabbing a file from the wall.
"Hey, it's Dazai! Hi!" Sayuri waved to the boy with a toothy grin.
"Hello," Dazai spoke as he turned to look at the black haired girl.
"I need to speak with the boss. Stay out of trouble, Sayu," Koyo said as she stayed by the door.
"Never gonna happen," Sayu replied with a grin, not watching as the ginger walked away to converse with the big boss.
Again Dazai noticed that her eyes didn't leave him for even a second.
"What's your story?" Sayu asked as she seemed to circle him. "If Mr Mori likes you, you must be good!"
"I don't really have a story," Dazai replied as he quirked a brow. "I don't need one."
"Well everyone needs a story. A reason for why they are who they are," Sayu said, coming to a halt in front of him.
"You first and then I'll think about it," Dazai said as he turned his gaze to look down at the file in his grasp.
"Well, when I was two my parents were murdered so my older brother Sakunosuke took me and we went on the run. He started killing people for money and when I was old enough, I started helping him. That's why Mr Mori introduced me to you as one of the Oda siblings. We made quite the name for ourselves in the underworld," Sayuri explained, sitting at one of the desks. "I was recruited by the Port Mafia before the old boss died, but Saku didn't want to join."
"The old boss? Why would you join? Wasn't he crazy?" Dazai spoke from memory which made Sayu nod.
"Yeah, he was. Though, Koyo saved my life and I owed her a debt," Sayuri replied while raising her gaze from the file she was reading. "I heard all about you, but meeting you, I can tell that you aren't as calm and stoic as you are acting right now. Am I wrong?"
Dazai shut the file he was reading and shoved it under his arm. "You got me."
"Alright. I spilled. Your turn."
"I don't really have a story. I don't remember much of my childhood other than wandering the streets. I tried to jump off of a bridge and Mori happened to be there. He offered to take me in and said that he could bring me death as I so desire. It really was a serendipitous scenario," Dazai replied with a grin. "I'm a little annoyed that he didn't hold up his end of the bargain. I didn't expect to still be breathing."
Sayuri quirked a brow as she watched him slump with sorrow. "You are a strange one. I think we could get along."
"And why would I want to get along with you?" Dazai questioned as he leaned closer to her.
"Everyone wants to get along with me!" Sayuri replied quickly with a toothy grin. "Unless you want me to make the rest of your life hell? I can arrange that too!"
Dazai chuckled. "I guess you're right. We will get along. Wanna go prank Mori by getting Elise to ignore him. She loves being mean to him."
"Do I ever?!" Sayuri shot up in her seat and the two darted out of the room.
"Saku! I'm home!"
Sayuri waltzed into the apartment she shared with her brother. She flopped down onto the couch beside the red haired boy.
"And how was your day?" Sakunosuke asked as he paused the show he had been watching.
"Pretty boring. Koyo sent me to kill a shopkeeper who was refusing to keep paying protection money. He didn't even put up a fight," she explained as she rested her head on his lap. "Oh, but that new kid that I told you about, he helped me get back at Ace! He's a real riot, I'm telling you!"
Sakunosuke chuckled lightly, petting his sister's head. "He sounds like it. Glad to see you actually making a friend."
"Hey! I have friends!" Sayu shot back with a pout. "I just usually can't get them to stay around..."
"Well, you've got me and this new kid, Dazai? Right?" Sakunosuke questioned.
"Yea! I think Mr Mori called him Osamu the other day, but I could be wrong. Oh well. Did you make dinner?" She asked, yawning as she curled closer to him.
"Yeah. Curry," Sakunosuke replied before looking down to see that Sayu had passed out in his lap.
He chuckled as he scooped her up. He took her into her room and tucked her in. After kissing her forehead, he left her to sleep for the rest of the night.
He went to his own room and grabbed his holster, getting ready for his own job. He left the apartment swiftly, knowing his sister would be safe for the night.
