Epilogue
"Finn Rider." Mr Fisher spoke into the microphone, watching the line of seniors for him.
The audience cheers, including me, as he walks across the stage to the principal. He hands Finn a roll of paper with a red ribbon tied around it. Finn takes it gratefully, shaking the principals hand before walking off the stage.
He turns back towards me for a second, send a wink my way that made my body run hot.
I'm so totally in love with that idiot.
R and T were not that far away from each other in the alphabet, so my name was soon to be called. I could already feel the nerves running through my veins at the thought.
Knowing me, I'd trip and fall off the stage.
Mr Fisher kept calling out names, now starting T and my heart was hammering in my chest.
I had finally made it all four years through high school. Today was the day I finally get my diploma and scream SUCK IT to the audience.
Well, maybe not the last part. My parents are here.
Though, the last day of school I told my math teacher he could eat my ass and that I will not miss him.
Finn had moved in with a nice Foster family just down the street from my house. They agreed to let him live with them until he went off to college and they had been more of a family to him than his own uncle. He also got accepted to NYU for a business degree.
I had also been accepted to NYU for a degree in arts. I actually got scholarship. Some lady there saw one of my pieces at an art show last year and absolutely loved it. We're going to get an apartment together close to campus.
Natalia and Harvey are still going strong. They both also got accepted into NYU so we'll thankfully stick together for the next four years of our lives.
"Zara Thomas." It was like my heart stopped beating for a moment.
I walk towards the principal, a wide smile on my face. I shake his hand and gratefully take my diploma from him. I could hear my mother and father screaming from the audience and when I look over, I see them both standing up with Noah sitting in my mother's arms.
I give them a slight wave as I walk off the stage. I scramble my way to the seats in the middle of the auditorium where I find my boyfriend sitting next to an empty seat.
"You looked so beautiful up there." He whispered in my ear, laying him arm around my shoulders.
I blush, laying my head on his chest.
Once the principal had announced all the names and all the seniors had taken their seats, he called the valedictorian up to make a speech and yatta yatta yatta. All that boring stuff.
"Congratulations class of 2019! You graduated!" Mr Fisher yells into the microphone once everything had been said and done.
All the seniors stand up from their seats and take off their caps, tossing them up in the air. Everyone in the auditorium cheered and clapped and whooped.
Finn grabs a hold of my waist and pulls my body against his, lowering his head to kiss me passionately. I place my hands on his face, caressing his soft skin.
"I love you, Zara." He whispered as he pulled away, our foreheads resting against each other's.
"I love you too." I told him honestly, shivering slightly when his minty breath hit my face.
"Marry me." He suddenly said, making me take my head back only slightly.
"What?"
He was smiling like a maniac. "Zara, I've loved you since the day I met you and I can't picture spending my life with anyone else but you."
My eyes dash between his, looking for something that tells me he's joking or this is a prank.
He was dead serious.
"Look, I know we're only eighteen and we literally just graduated high school, but what do we have to lose? I love you. I love you so much I don't even know what to do with myself sometimes. I want to make you my wife."
Holy crap.
"So, will you marry me?"
We were only eighteen years old, barely adults. I mean, most people still considered us teenagers. But I have no doubt in my mind that what we feel for each other is real. I mean, look at my parents. They fell in love at the same age we did, they were just rational enough to wait a while.
But I have never been rational.
I blink back the tears I hadn't realized were there until now, but one somehow slipped down my cheek.
"Yes."
His smile somehow widens. "Yes?"
I nod. "Yes, yes I'll marry you."
He breaths out a sigh as I wrap my arms around him, more tears unwillingly streaming down my cheeks.
Holy shit, I'm getting married.
We walked out of the auditorium hand in hand with smiles as wide as soccer balls on our faces.
"I'm so proud of you!" I turn around in the parking lot to see my mother rushing towards me, her arms open for me, and my father trailing behind with Noah in his arms.
She squeezes the breath of out me and I thought I was going to faint.
"I can't believe my baby graduated high school." She tells me once she's done hugging me, tears forming in her eyes.
"Mom, don't cry. You're going to make me cry." I wipe away a tear that ran down her cheek, tears threatening to spill from my eyes.
"Hey, don't I get a hug too?" My father chimes in, making us all chuckle.
I wrap my arms around his neck, careful in not squishing Noah with my body.
"Sissy!" He cried, a giant smile on his face that showed off his new baby teeth.
I take Noah from my father and sit him on my hip. "Hey, Noah." I said in my baby voice.
Finn wrapped his arm around my shoulder, ruffling Noah's hair. "Hey buddy."
"What were you two so smiley about? We saw you walking out like you just won the lottery." My father asks, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
Finn and I share a look that says the same thing.
I don't think now is the time to tell my parents we're getting married at eighteen. Maybe we should try to ease them into it a little more.
"We're just excited we finally got out of this hell hole." Finn answers, looking up at the high school we spent the last four years of our life at.
"I hear you, high school was brutal after you. We were glad to be out of there as soon as possible." My mother tells me as my father wraps his arm around her.
"Come on, let's go home. We have reservations at 5:00." My father announces, leading my mother back to the car while kissing her head.
I glance back at Finn who was smiling like an idiot.
"When do you think we should tell them?"
I adjust Noah on my hip and he tugs at my hair.
"Maybe not on the day of our high school graduation?" He nods, wrapping my arm around my shoulder as we follow my parents to the car.
Today was the start of the rest of our lives.
