THE MIRACLE
It was officially 2 weeks until Katie married Simon. Alex was nervous. She still hadn't found an outfit or written her little speech. Nathan had his outfit fitted, he would carry the rings on the wedding day, a small, personal touch.
Katie had been kind enough to invite Alex on her Hen night, but Alex refused, saying she would be too busy with work and Nathan. Secretly she just didn't want to spend any kind of alone time with Katie. Apparently Katie and Nathan got on well, which made Alex feel a little better, she was nervous all of her disliking to Katie would influence Nathan, but apparently it hadn't.
Simon and Katie were currently visiting Nathan and Alex. Alex had stayed home while Simon and Katie took him to the beach. Alex wasn't the happiest of people when Katie was stood on her doorstep with Simon to collect Nathan in order to spend some time with him, but she felt it best not to be rude. Alex had also learnt that JJ was in town, and he was with Hannah no less. Hannah and JJ had similar senses of humour, so Alex assumed they would be content in each others company.
"We're back!" It was Simon.
Nathan, Katie and Simon all walked into Alex's living room to find her holding a chocolate bar in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.
"Back already?" She asks, wiping the chocolate off her lips before placing down her tea and dumping the empty chocolate wrapper.
"It wasn't exactly warm," Katie mutters, her face looking round the dainty apartment.
"Ah, I see," Alex says and Nathan tugs on his dads jacket.
"Dad, come see my drawing!" He says eagerly and he drags Simon into his room, leaving Katie and Alex alone.
"So, how's the modelling?" Alex asks, a fake smile upon her lips.
"Great actually, had to lose weight though! I put on so much after my last photoshoot," She says, eyes scanning over Alex's old furniture.
"Do you like being a model?" Alex asks as Katie sits at the counter.
"I love it, lots of money, lots of attention, its great," Katie smiles and Alex nods, looking away to try and stop herself laughing at Katie's arrogance.
"And you, what do you do for a living?" Katie asks, fingers running along the counter top.
"I'm a chef," Alex says and Katie flinches.
"A chef?" Katie asks, confused.
"Yeah, a chef,"
"Interesting," Katie says, looking Alex up and down.
"Yes, it's a very interesting job,"
"You knew Simon when he was young, correct?" Katie asks suddenly changing the subject.
"Correct," Alex answers.
"And you lost your virginity to him?"
"Yeah...I really don't see why its important-"
"I know you still hold feelings for him. But he's mine now. You need to back off, keep your slutty little chef fingers off him," Katie snaps and Alex's eyebrows furrow in confusion, her eyes blinking nervously.
Josh had sworn to her he wouldn't speak of this to Katie, maybe he hadn't and she just had an inkling.
"I don't have feelings for Simon, especially not those kind. And I will keep my slutty chef fingers off him," Alex smiles, her eyes burning into Katie's.
Suddenly Simon and Nathan return, both grinning.
"Everything okay?" Simon asks, sensing the tension.
"More than okay, more like perfect," Katie says, eyes flickering over towards Alex.
"Good, thats good," Simon says and he looks over at Alex.
"Right, mister, I have to go, I'm taking Katie here out for a special meal," Simon tells Nathan and Katie throws a smug smirk at Alex, attempting to make her jealous.
"Okay daddy," Nathan says and he hugs father and gives Katie a wave.
Alex and Nathan see them to the door.
"I'll see you in 2 weeks, at the wedding," Simon says to them both, earning a grin from Katie.
Simon hugs Nathan again before looking at Alex. They fold their arms round each other, hugging each other tightly. Alex's eyes look off in the distance, her mind filled with mashed together thoughts.
"Goodbye, Alex," Simon whispers.
"Goodbye, Simon," Her voice is muffled by his shoulder as she speaks.
"See you at the wedding," Katie says, a smirk on her face.
"See you at the wedding," Alex replies, smiling sweetly.
Nathan and Alex wave goodbye to them until they're out of view.
"She's such a bitch," Alex mutters and Nathan frowns.
"Bad word!" Nathan calls and Alex sighs gently, her eyes settling on her son.
Just as they're about to go back inside Nathan looks up at his mother.
"Can we go to the beach?" Nathan asks and Alex nods, slightly confused as Nathan had just been with his father.
Alex and Nathan head down to the beach, slipping their shoes off.
"Why did you ask to leave when you were here with your dad and Katie?" Alex asks and Nathan shrugs.
"Katie was talking about the wedding and I got bored of her," Nathan says and Alex smiles when he isn't looking.
"Well, I suppose thats a good enough excuse for wanting to leave," She says and Nathan suddenly goes red, his eyes staring into a girl with brown hair and brown eyes.
"You okay Jenny?" Alex hears and her eyes look into the distance to see a woman a bit older than her holding a toddlers hand, a boy only a few years older than Nathan with her.
Was this the girl Nathan was in love with? Was this Jenny? Was that woman her mother?
"Hi Nathan," The girl smiles and Nathan smiles back.
"Hi Jenny," He says and Jenny giggles.
"Hey Nate, come look at my sandcastle," Jenny says and Nathan follows after her.
Alex walks towards the woman who had called out to Jenny.
"Hi, I'm Alex Hughes, Nathan's mother," Alex says and the woman smiles.
"I'm Diane, Jenny's mother," Says the woman and Alex smiles back, shaking her offered hand.
"So your Jenny and my Nathan must be school friends?" Alex asks and Diane nods.
"Oh yes, of course, Jenny never stops talking about him...Say, Nathan will have to come over to play some time?" Diane says and Alex can't help the grin on her face.
"That would...That would be amazing, of course," Alex says, she looks over to her son and Jenny building a sandcastle together and her mind flickers with memories.
"Go play then sweetheart," Rachel encouraged her daughter, pushing her gently forwards, "Those girls over there look nice,"
Alex already knew 'those girls over there' were not 'nice' at all. Alex walked towards them, but was met by horrid looks from the 3 girls.
"Ew! Its Alex Hughes. Alex is a boys name!" Says the red head.
"She dresses like a boy too! And plays football like the boys," The brunette adds.
"Alex Hughes stinks like poo," The blonde giggles, causing the other two to join in.
Alex felt her eyes water, her shoulders slump, her head falls and she quickly walks away. Her tears slipped slowly down her cheeks as she sat down on a bench, feet not even able to touch the ground.
"Hey...Are you alright?" She hears, the voice was only a few inches from her.
She just shrugged, her eyes covered by her hands as she attempted to stop the flowing tears.
"I'm Simon, Simon Minter, whats your name?"
"Alex Hughes," Her voice was just a muffled sob.
"Oh I know you! You're in my class. You're really quiet and never talk!" He comments and Alex just cries even more.
"Did those girls say mean things?"
Alex just nodded.
The young boy walked away for a moment, but after 5 minutes he was back.
"That should do the trick," He says to Alex and she pulls away her hands.
She looks up at the boy, and her dark eyes meet the sea blue eyes that she would one day, grow quite fond of.
