Words I Find Extremely Useful/Not-So-Useful

Okay, so this isn't a guide I've found or anything. This is one hundred percent purely mine. Just some words/phrases/stuff that I find, if you use, enhance your story and/or intriguing readers. Also some that I find downgrades stories. So here we go.

Forever: For some reason, a book gets ten times better if you add the word 'forever' in the summary. It makes it more dramatic. "Oh gosh! Forever? It must be important!" Strange, but true. I'm not immune.

Questions: Not really a single word, but ending your summary in a question intrigues readers. It makes them want to know the answer to the question you just posed.

Sheepish: Don't even ask. I just love this word and it has such great meaning.

Songs: This can be too much of a good thing. It's okay to mention songs or put song lyrics in there-brilliant, even-but don't put the entire song.

Magical: The word magical is truly that; magical. Adding the word magical makes people think of good fairies and such. Beats me. But the word magical/magic does interest people.

Slightly: This is kind of the opposite. I'm saying don't use this word. Well, sometimes is okay. But don't overuse it. The amount of books I've read that have 'slightly' every second sentence is mind blowing.

Text Talk: Another 'don't use' thing. Text talk is for texting. This is writing, not texting. Use proper punctuation, grammar and spelling. Come on, people, use the little common sense humans possess.

Perfect: Seriously, this word tends to make people imagine the person/object/room/whatever as how they envision perfect to be. A good word, again not to be overused.

Colours: Colours are a great addition to any story, but don't overuse them. And go beyond, green, blue, red, orange; turquoise, tangerine, violet (I came up with those just sitting looking at the screen, so its not hard).

Striking: I seriously love this word. The few times I've read it in a book I smile and sit back in my seat for no good reason. It reminds me of lightning. It's a great descriptive word that anyone can use.

DICTIONARY/THESAURUS: I'm not saying use these words, I'm saying use the words in them. Dictionaries and Thesauruses are BRILLIANT places to find the best words for writing. To go beyond 'good' and 'bad.' You can overuse them as much as you want!

I hope you found this at least vaguely useful. I have so much advice (read: notes from my dad) to share with you all and I hope that this is helping at least some people in some way. Again if you need any assistance with anything, I am completely available.
