Describing Characters - Clothing and Body Movement
Describing clothing ins't a huge aspect of a good book, but it can be fun and occasionally necessary to include what the character is wearing.
Here is a list of ways to describe different types of clothing and accessories.
CLOTHING/ACCESSORIES (modern only)
Headwear - bowler; panama; top hat; scarf; bonnet; fedora; beret; peakcap; deerstalker,
Hair Accessories - alice band; hair band; hair clip; headband; head scarf; scrunchie.
Footwear - boots; brogues; clogs; high heels; plimsols; sandles; skates (ice, roller); snowshoes, trainers; wedges.
Tops - blouse; cardigan; halterneck; jacket; jumper; polo neck; pullover; shirt; sweater; t-shirt.
Bottoms - dress, shorts; skirt; trousers.
Other - mittens; fingerless gloves; gloves; cloak; shawl; coat; windcheater; mackintosh; raincoat; socks; stockings; tights.
Material - canvas; cotton; denim; linen; lycra; nylon; polyester; satin; silk; towelling; wool.
Jewellery - earrings; necklace; bracelet; brooch; watch; pendant; stud; bangle; chain; ring; toe-ring; bellyyring; ankle chain; bellychain.
Another thing you can use to describe a character is how they move and position themselves. Do they walk slowly; do they fidget with their fingers; do they hug their knees to their chest; they choice is yours. These are just some different types of movements.
BODY MOVEMENTS/POSITIONS
Fingers - click; drumming; flatten palms against; flick; laced/interlaced; massage; pull; stroking (chin); tapping; tug.
Hands - brush; bunch; caress; clap; clasp; clench/unclench; close (around/over); clutch; cupping; dust off; grasp; grip; hit; hold; knock; made a fist; punch; rap; slid; wave.
Arms - embrace; fold; hug.
Head - bend; bow; cock; cradle in hands; dip; incline; lean (back, forward, sideways); lift; nod; shake; swing; tilt; tip; toss; turn; wag.
Chin - raise; stroke.
Nose - wrinkle (in disgust).
Shoulders - shrug.
Knees - hug knees to.
Body motion - amble; bounce; chase; crawl; creep; gallop; jump; leap; lollop; slide; slither; soar; rush; spring; stride; stroll.
