Ch 64: A Trial in the Dark
Third Person's POV
The moment Luna stepped into the observatory, she was met with a flash of yellow lightning.
She jumped backwards, a high screeching scream resonating throughout the room.
A scream that surely was not hers.
The jump had made her lose her balance, making her whole body weight be pulled down by gravity.
Her back would have met the ground, if it weren't for two strong arms catching her fall, engulfing her in a warm secure embrace.
Too secure.
The instant she felt that warmness in her heart, she blinked in confusion, wondering who had been able to catch her fall so quickly.
She looked upwards, her confused blinking continuing as her silver orbs clashed with emerald green jewels showing concern and worry for her.
"You okay?" Gladion asked.
"Y-yeah." 'Shit, why did I stutter?!' She thought as he helped her regain her balance on her own two feet.
"Try not faint." He said. She couldn't even give him a verbal answer, only giving him a small nod as a yes.
Soon, they heard footsteps approaching in a hurried pace, making them turn to see two people arriving with panicked faces.
One was older and far taller, having pale skin and grey-blue eyes. Eyes sheltered behind a pair of glasses. His brown-blonde hair, which seemed to be more of a chopped gradient, was slightly untamed, as if it had just been rubbed by some balloons and now was flooded with static.
He wore a blue jacket over a light blue buttoned shirt which had a weird black tie string held by a metal pin of some sort. Along with this he wore grey-black jeans and sneakers, adding more to his laid back look.
The second person was a boy around 12, maybe? He was short and had a round body with chubby cheeks. His eyes were black and tiny and his hair was of a bright orange, which also was filled with static.
This boy wore a white t-shirt with an orange silhouette of a console and brown cardigan shorts. Paired with this, his sneakers were green, yellow, and purple in color, not really going with his warm color scheme of orange and yellow. Around his neck was some sort of chocker that was shaped like a Pikachu tail, and clipped around his round waist was a silver belt with the familiar four leaf clover like charm all captains wore. This clover's top middle leaf was orange, meaning that the boy standing before them was the Electric Trial Captain.
'Wait, when did the Electric Trial Captain become this short kid?'
"Sorry about that, did we scare you?" The older tall male asked while rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment.
"Caught us...off guard." Luna replied uncomfortably. She wasn't just going to say that the lighting scared her because of the trauma she went through when she was three. Much less admit she herself was the one who screamed.
"Sorry, we were experimenting with some electric techniques. Things got out of hand there with Togedemaru." The boy said. As if in cue, a small spiky ball came rolling down the hallway, confusing Luna at first. It wasn't until it stopped did she realize it was a Pokémon, whose face looked up to her with apologetic eyes.
'Ah...the Alolian Pikachu Wannabe.' The ravenette thought with a sweat drop, trying her best not to show her fear through her facial expression.
"Haha, cute." She said, not noticing she had scooted closer to the blonde haired male.
"He won't hurt you, he's perfectly harmless." The taller male assured her, reading through her cool act. 'Tell that to someone who doesn't have thirteen year trauma correlated with lightning.' Gladion thought sourly.
"I am Molayne and this here is my little cousin, Sophocles." The taller male introduced. The younger boy beamed with a huge smile.
"Also known as the new Electric Trial Captain." He proclaimed, his Togedemaru jumping in joy.
"Aren't you a little...young to be a Trial Captain?" Gladion asked with crossed arms. The orange haired boy puffed his cheeks.
"I am no younger than Acerola, the Ghost Trial Captain." He said with a huff and crossed arms, turning away in a childish manner. 'But you sure act childishly.' Luna countered in her head. "There is no minimum age for someone to be a Trial Captain. You can be a baby and still be one. It's not rare for us younger ones to take the ropes for the adults, happens all the time in the world we live in." He added.
'True. Red-The Fighter was merely in his teens when he brought down the leader of Team Rocket. Well, at least reduced it to less than half of the supposed empire it was. Not to mention that story Sun told me that other time about this dude called the Mask of Ice using children to do his binding for him. Ugh, such sick people.'
"The great example now is the four teenagers who are doing the police's job back in Johto."
"Huh? Who?" Luna asked. 'Teenagers? Are those the ones who are helping with the whole Team Rocket uprising? I haven't been keeping up with that at all. I mean who would? It's a region half across the ocean from here. It doesn't concern me.'
As she thought this, she played with her hair, glancing to her right. However, not a second after did her finger stop abruptly, seeing the narrowed look of the blonde haired male. She raised an eyebrow.
"Johto?" He asked.
"Have neither of you heard the news? Team Rocket, the evil organization that originated and supposedly ended in Kanto, has been causing trouble in Johto."
"Yes and?" Luna asked, bored out of her mind. 'I came here for my trial, not for a news report.'
"And...just recently the four Dexholders of Johto just stopped one of their attacks towards some wild Pokémon." 'Thank you for reminding me the reason why I hate Team Rocket.'
"It was a full in battle. Heck, even the Dexholders of Kanto came in." The older cousin said.
"Red-The Fighter, Green-The Trainer, Yellow-The Healer, and Blue-The Evolver. The four famous Dexholders of Kanto. Did you know that one of the Johto Dexholders is actually Blue's brother?" Sophocles said with star like eyes. "Silver-The Exchanger, that is his name."
"Yeah, yeah, fun story but we didn't come here for a documentary about the Dexholders."
"Well, you never did state why you are here to begin with." Sophocles said with a raised eyebrow.
"You didn't exactly give us the opportunity." Luna shot back.
"Touché."
"My guess is that you came for your Electric Trial, right?" Molayne said.
"Yes." Luna said.
"Ah! One of my first trainers." Sophocles said with stars in his eyes. The ravanette gaged at this, narrowing her eyes at him. 'I am not some lab ratatta for you to test your puny trial methods.' She through with a twitching eyebrow.
"I'll leave them to you cousin. You will do great." Molayne said with an encouraging smile, leaving the three behind. 'Shouldn't he have adult supervision?'
"Alright then!" Sophocles said while clapping his hands, gaining the attention of both Luna and Gladion. "Seeing that we both have wasted your valuable time, why not call the Totem Pokémon from the start?" Luna raised an eyebrow. 'Start with the totem fight?' She questioned. 'This sounds too...convenient.' Gladion thought with suspicion as the younger boy walked into another room.
"Whatever makes this go faster, I'm all ears kid." Luna said upon entering.
"So I tried a bit of this and that, and I think I've whipped up a little device to call the Totem Pokémon by using sound.
You see, there are some sounds that are inaudible to people but Pokémon can hear just fine. These sounds are what we use to study Pokémon in outer space. By using this data, I have built a machine that summons the Totem Pokémon by making use of this technology." Luna sighed.
"Look, kid, I don't know to know how it works. I just need to know if it works." Luna said, interrupting the whole science lesson. 'You did tell him you were all ears.' Gladion thought with a sweat drop.
"Well-uhh-you see...this is will actually be my first time trying it out." The younger male sheepishly admitted.
"So we will be your test subjects?" Gladion said bluntly as he raised an eyebrow. It was more of a statement than an actual question.
"Yes."
"Ah fun. What secures us from blowing up the whole place? Or more like, what secures us we won't be electrocuted to ashes?" Luna asked with a forced smile and clear sarcasm. Sophocles waved his hands in front of him as he shook his head.
"Oh! Don't you worry! I will be the one monitoring the machine, not you two. However, only one can fight the Totem Pokémon at a given time while the other will have to be a spectator, because no way can both of you battle the Totem Pokémon at the same time. That sure wouldn't be challenging. I mean, summoning the Totem Pokémon and proving your strength to it, that's what every trial boils down to, right? You two surely don't seem like trainers who like to depend on other people." He said as he turned to the control panel behind him.
'True.' Luna glanced towards Gladion who only shrugged. 'This little kid didn't even answer my first question though.'
"Whatever kid, just get this going." She urged with a dismissive wave.
"Alright, without further a do...Totem Pokémon 2.0, engage!" And he finished giving the last command to the computer. For a few second nothing seems to happen, everything being utterly silent. Too silent for Gladion's liking.
"Welp, it seems like your little machine didn't work." Luna said.
"I am sure it worked. The totem should—" There was a small static sound, before everything went pitch black.
"What the hell?!"
"Gyargh?! No way! Did I blow a fuse?!"
"What do you think genius!?" Luna said as she heard something, or someone, collide with something. This made her flinch away, feeling something graze her arm.
"Oww! Did the door close?!"
"The doors are connected to the electricity of this place, correct? It is only obvious they closed shut after being cut from their energy source." Gladion said.
They couldn't see anything. They were trapped in a cold black void, casing chills to run up Luna's spine. She tried to look at her hands as means to reassure her, but even that she was unable to see even when they were right in front of her. Because of this, she had to depend on touch.
She began to wave her hands around, trying to find something solid to guide her through this darkness. It wasn't like she didn't like the dark, heck she loved to take midnight walks, but the mere through of being trapped in a dark place without a spect of light terrified her for some odd reason.
She hated the complete darkness. She hated the absence of light itself. It made her fell...weak...hopeless...just like that fateful night.
Her breathing became rigid. The fear started to boil deep inside her stomach, bubbling up to the surface as it threatened to make her lose her mind. She needed light. She needed warmth. 'Oh Lord Light, help me.' She pleaded in her head.
Suddenly, she caught grasp of something warm, something that immediately calmed her uncontrollable nerves.
Whatever she had taken a hold of, they weren't expect it but not a second after did it interlace their fingers with her own, relaxing her completely.
"Stay calm." 'The Edgelord?'
"Let's see, we'll need to turn off the security system to get the door open..." They heard Sophocles murmur. "You'll have to pass an audio quiz!" 'Quiz?' "I-it's fine. I definitely feel a powerful presence. It's coming now. The Totem Pokémon is coming. Change of plans, this shall be your trial!" 'You have to be joking me!'
"Your task will be to say, very clearly, what the following sound is from. They will be every day sounds you hear so it shouldn't be too difficult." They heard Sophocles explain.
A familiar sound resonated throughout the room right after those instructions, almost like a small whisper of a ghost. This only fueled Luna's uncontrollable nerves even more.
Sending this, Gladion grasp her hand more tightly, trying to call her down.
"The market?" She questioned.
"L-"
A shock of pain coursed through their bodies as Luna held back a scream of fear, chocking on her own saliva. 'Electricity? Oh fuck if I get it wrong does it mean we get electrocuted!?' Her anxiety shot out the roof.
"Luna, breathe." Gladion told her as he pulled her closer, ignoring Sophocles speech about being a tough kid. He could feel her whole body tremble against his in utter apprehension, Her breathing shaky and her heart rate going at a million miles per hour.
He started rubbing his thumb over her knuckles as a way to soothe her. For a few seconds it seemed like it wasn't working but gradually, he felt her trembling cease and heard her breathing normalize.
"I'm here, okay? You will be fine. There is nothing to fear." He assured her in a los voice, trying his best to locate where exactly her ear was. "Stay calm. Breathe. Don't let your fear control you." He added before he thought back to the sound from earlier.
"Pokémon center." There was a sound of approval and the door could be heard opening. As Sophocles celebrated, Gladion felt something coming.
'A Lightning Beast is approaching.' Kekoa warned in Gladion's head. The blonde nodded, reaching for a Pokéball.
"Golbat!" He called out, throwing the Pokéball out. There was a flash of red, allowing him to catch the Pokéball back in his hand and to see Luna's state.
'She seems alright but the terror in her eyes is still present.'
'You don't need to tell me. I have eyes too.'
Their conversation was cut short when Gladion saw a flash of electricity. He heard the muffled yelp of Luna, making him dodge the attack as he hugged her protectively.
"Poison Fang!" 'It might be dark but Golbat's environment is the darkness.' He heard Golbat's cry and soon something scratching the floor followed by a small cry of pain.
"It seems you defeated the Pokémon!"
"Quite." And the sound of the door closing echoed throughout the silent room.
The sounds...
Those sounds...
The sounds...
Why did it sound so similar too...to what?
Luna was not sure.
"Ugh! The door closed again! I-it's gonna be okay. The Totem Pokémon is on its way, I can feel it."
Flashes of...something came back to her mind.
'We need to do something about this. We cannot let those kids in that house.'
'You! IT WAS YOU!'
'She knows. You all have to go away.'
'The plan-'
'I will do it. I have nothing to lose but you do.'
'We are moving? But-'
'Don't ask questions, Luna. Hurry and get your things like your brother.'
*thunder*
'Hurry!'
"Rotom, come out." Gladion ordered, snapping Luna back to reality. 'What?'
"Zzt." The small buzz was soon followed by light, allowing them to see they surroundings, even if just a little. "Why iz it zo dark here, roto?" The Rotomdex asked.
"It doesn't matter why, we just need you to give us some light and to keep close to Luna." He said. Rotom didn't try to question it further, making his way closer to Luna, who seemed about as calm as she could get in their situation.
'She's agitated...'
Gladion couldn't even pounder over what Kekoa has said, hearing the new sound echo through. Thankfully for him, he had just heard that specific sound seconds ago.
"Rotomdex." The door opened, but as soon as it did, a Charjabug came through with an electric hello. Gladion was quick to pull Luna away from the charge, letting the lightning to hit the nearby wall. He could feel her body start shaking again, making him click his tongue.
He was unaware that a new set of flashes ran through her mind. Unlike seconds ago, she was unable to hear anything but she surely saw something.
Fire.
Rain.
Lightning.
'Enough if this...please...' Luna begged in her head, and it seemed to work. The flashes ceased, the last one being of...Luamine?
"Poison Fang again!" Gladion snapped, once again returning her to reality. Feeling his trainer's urgency, Golbat was quick to go through with Gladion's order, using his attack to faint Charjabug in one blow. The impact echoed throughout the room and soon after the door closed.
"Fuck it all!"
"The door closed again!"
"I am well aware of that." Gladion snapped at Sophocles, making him flinch. He was so fed up with this whole situation. He didn't care about the trial, and surely Luna didn't have the head to worry over it right now. He was more concerned over her trauma more than anything.
'We need to get this over with.'
The third sound came through but this time Gladion wasn't even sure where it came from, or more like, his head just went completely blank. 'Of course I go blank.' He thought irritated.
'The sound is of that beast you just went up against.'
"C-" Gladion turned to Luna, her hands that were once hugging her figure were slowly sliding off her arms, her quivering lips breathing in a small breath of air. "C-charjabug."
Approved.
"Good going!" Sophocles praised. Luna, even when scared, narrowed her eyes at the boy. 'This is no time for praises.' At that moment another Charjabug jumped through the door, a charge of lighting cutting through the darkness. Luna quickly moved out of the way, everything going slow motion as something else came to her mind.
Thunder, pounding against her ears came through. Cries of her siblings. Yells of her parents. And a familiar laughter.
'This is the end of the Hikari family!'
Her eyes went wide as everything resumed back to their usual time, the electricity hitting the control panel of the machine.
"My invention!"
"There is no time for that! Run to the door and keep it open kid, hurry!" Gladion ordered. Sophocles didn't need to be told twice. It was not like he could argue. So he ran towards the door, Gladion ordering his Golbat to attack the Charjabug to protect the boy, and quickly went to work. He pulled a box to prevent the door from closing, which proved to work just seconds after he did that.
Letting out a sigh of relief, he turned to them and saw the Charjabug was on the floor, fainted.
"We did it!" Gladion narrowed his eyes at the orange haired boy.
"More like I did all the work. You surely didn't help with any of the questions." Gladion said as he turned towards Luna.
He expect her to be trembling in fear but there was none of that. The terror was absent in her eyes, instead they were filled with confusion.
"Are you okay?" He asked. She breathed in.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She said. He raised an eyebrow. 'Her tone is different.'
Before he could ask again, both felt a strong presence.
"The Totem Pokémon has arrived!"
The lights suddenly came back on and the moment they did, they saw that there was Vikavolt.
And a Togedemaru...
"Uhh...it seems like...we got more than what we bargain for."
