Ch 34: Alarms Ringing Throughout!
Diana's POV
As I fiddled with the lock, my mind drifted off to that conversation with the agent.
'You have left countless of families with one person short. You have robbed many things that were valuable for us and many more people. Hopefully your time here makes you realize how many sins you have committed.' I shook my head in frustration.
"Men, they only care about themselves. I don't think anyone will miss them." I muttered but something in me wanted me to think other wise. The small voice in the back of my head was just screaming at me that statement wasn't a fact. I growled lightly right before I heard some distant footsteps. I quickly stopped my lock picking and hid the pin behind me.
The now familiar caramel hair and olive-green eyes cane into view. He turned to me with narrowed eyes. He was wearing what I guessed a normal international police uniform since it had the insignia on it. It was a dark-grey-blue long sleeve shirt under some gear that seemed to be bullet proof. The gear was over his chest, shoulders, elbows, knees, and palms. The actually gear was totally black with only green accents to act as decoration. His jeans were black and had matching shoes to go with it, making it look like his shoes were part of his jeans.
"I'm surprised you haven't tried anything. You have a reputation of...getting away in unusual ways." He said bluntly. Still no emotion shown in those eyes, apart from pure anger.
"Got ready for a date or something?" I asked while crossing my arms and leaning back. He clicked his tongue.
"Yeah as if. This is the usual uniform a person of my class has to wear, I put it on because it's obligatory." He muttered.
"Aren't your friends over at Johto right now? So why are you getting ready to see your boss?" I asked with a smirk. 'There has to be another reason of why he put that on if just moments ago he had ditched the uniform that was supposedly obligatory.'
"As I said, it's obligatory, not that you will understand any of this. You don't work for the International Police." He said.
"What if I do in the future?" I asked.
"The International Police doesn't accept anyone who wants to join, they have to train for a spot in a branch. Usually they start at age 10, enough time to teach them how to handle people like you. Of course that wasn't my case. Now for someone like you to enter? That doesn't happen very often, actually it hasn't happened for over 40 years. Your chances of getting in are slim, not to mention that you have a very colorful record of criminal actions." He said.
"That was a rhetorical question." I said bluntly. He glared at me and leaned against the cell bars.
"It's good to have some information about us, that way the next time you think of doing something of this degree, you think it through it." He said. I rolled my eyes.
"I do have a brain and it has helped me get out of near death situations." I said while pointing to my head. He scoffed.
"Well it apparently won't help now. If you want to cut your stay, you can give me the information I want from you." He said. 'Ah so this is why he came here for. Well I'm not going to rat out Lusamine that easily, it would mean throwing away my whole plan of destroying the Ultra Beats.' I thought.
"Aww and here I thought you came here to see me." I said with a small fake pout and then smirked. "I'm not going to tell you anything so you can save your breath." I added. He clicked his tongue.
"Well seems like you don't care much about your life. That's too bad, you seem too young to throw it away like that." He said. I raised and eyebrow.
"Young? Look at you. Aren't you the youngest senior whatever police man? How old are you? Like 17?" I asked.
"I'm 18, you were one year short and how old are you? 5?" He asked. I sweats dropped. 'I have serious Edgelord vibes right now.'
"Do I look like a five year old?" I asked bluntly.
"You act like one." He refuted.
"If you have to know, I am younger than you, but I won't tell you my age. A woman shouldn't tell her age to a male." I said. He sweat dropped.
"Wow. Just wow. Anything else? Like information?" He asked. I glanced at him.
"No, I have nothing else for you. Move along. You need to worry for your friends in Johto." I said while whooshing my hand.
"The problem has been controlled over there. The Radio Tower is out of Team Rocket's domain." He stated. I thought back to my research, the one I did before coming here. 'Between Johto and Alola there are about eight hours of flight time but that can be cut short to 6 or even 4 if they come in jet. There is also the time difference. 19 hours, that is how ahead time is in Johto. So right now what time would it be? 4:00 something? So over there it would be what? 11:00 A.M. something?
The leader of this base might take a long time to come back. If I include the time of processing of those Team Rocket grunts then I don't have to worry much about him.' I thought.
"So your boss won't be here until very late to process me? Boo-hoo." I said. He shook his head, finding my act childish.
"It gives you more time to reflect over what you have done over the years." He muttered. I rolled my eyes and walked over, grabbing on to the metal bars. I glared at him.
"I regret nothing." I hissed. He gave me a glance, his olive eyes cold and angered. There was something in them though, something that seemed to say there was something behind all this cold act. He turned to looked at me directly.
"You will one day." He said and was right in front of me. "Everyone does something they regret." He said with a low voice.
"Oh really? What do you regret darling?" I asked. Something flickered through his eyes but as soon as it came, it soon went away. He hit the bars, sending a vibration through the whole cell door. I flinched by that action.
"Listen Ice Assassin, you have no right to say if people do or don't have regrets. And you have no right to ask me what regret I hold. The only thing you should care about right now is wether or not you will be sent into a cell or be given the sentence of exile." He hissed lowly.
"Exile?" I asked confused, gulping down the lump that had formed in my throat.
"Believe me, you do not want to be exiled. Orre isn't a place where you can relax. It's the opposite of this region." He said.
"Orre? Never heard of that region." I said bluntly while blowing a strand of my fake purple hair. He turned his back to me. He sighed heavily.
"I'm not surprised. Not many know about that region, like Alola. It's mostly desert and it's near Kanto and Johto. Far away from here. It's technically no mans' land." He explained.
"Good thing I'm a female." I said with a smirk. He gave me a glance and then turned his eyes back to the wall.
"Orre isn't a region you should take lightly. We haven't been able to go anywhere near Orre because of how harsh the environment is. Not to mention that it's filled with people who are either criminals, dangerous, or outcasts. That's why Orre is the place most exiles go, you need to learn to survive or you are dead." He said. I saw how his lips were pressed in a thin line, as if wanting to tell me something more about this region but at the same time refraining himself from doing so.
"There is something else that you aren't telling me, right?" I asked. He diverted his eyes from the wall to the floor to his right.
"There have been rumors going around within the people of the International Police that there is a group of terrorists, one that has been there for over 10 years. It's a war ground in Orre." He replied.
"Then why hasn't the International Police done anything?" I asked a bit confused, no, I technically demanded the answer.
"I asked that to my superiors. They said that I shouldn't listen to rumors and to do my job. In other words, they don't care if there is or isn't a war on that region, they just care that it's good enough to throw criminals into its deserts like trash." He answered.
I was actually shocked of what I was hearing. All I have heard about the International Police is that they are the ones who do justice over the whole world. They are seen as angles to everyone. The International Police this guy is describing isn't the one I have grown to hear about. Heck, they are staring to sound a bit like one of those organizations that appear in almost every region.
"The International Police you just told me about isn't the one I have heard about over the years. So let me ask you something and I am actually being serious about this." I started. He glanced at me, his olive-green eyes, searching into my own eyes if I was lying or not. He breathed in and gave me a small nod, indicating me to proceed. "If the International Police ever gave you an order and if that order goes against everything you believe, would you follow it? Would you ignore your own belief, your own head, your own heart to follow that order because it's your job?" I asked.
Silence followed my question. He stayed petrified in place, processing and thinking. I didn't say anything to hurry him, I actually wanted to know how dedicated he was to this job. I have heard of people saying that those of the International Police don't think twice about the orders they give them, but I want to know if that is true or not? If they even have a will of their own. He sighed.
"So you are technically saying if they control me as a puppet?" He asked.
"Pretty much. Would you follow the order though?" I asked again. He looked down, his caramel hair making a shadow over his eyes.
"A policeman of the International Police needs to follow orders always. A normal one for that matter." He started and then smirked, looking at me. I was a bit taken back by this sudden new emotion he was showing me. "But I am not a normal person of the International Police. I actually had something to leave behind when I entered, while others didn't. So I'll do whatever I can to protect that. I guess since I am always in near death situations, I want to preserve something and that something is that exact thing I left behind." He said.
"You had a family, huh?" I asked. He looked at the wall once more, his emotionless stare placed back on its position again.
"I have talked enough. I'll leave you be. Looker should be here tomorrow in the morning or a bit earlier than that. Don't do anything funny." He said sternly and walked off to the elevator. Once the doors closed shut I sighed.
"Well that was some small talk. Now time to pick the lock." I told myself and got the pin out, inserting it into the keyhole.
Gladion's POV
"Well done kid, you didn't get killed." Guzma said as I handed him the bag.
"This caused me a lot of trouble. If it weren't for the Stupid Paranoia, I would have been taken by the police." I hissed. He laughed.
"Well, it seems you have gotten accustomed to my niece being with you in all yours jobs." He said. I rolled my eyes.
"Where is your niece anyways? Did she report sick or something?" I asked. He stopped laughing and narrowed his eyes at me. 'I should have kept that question to myself.' I thought.
"Why do you want to know?" He asked.
"Curiosity. It isn't really like her to just bale like that, at least the time I have worked with her." I replied, trying my best to keep my voice even and neutral. I don't want the Old Man to think I want something with his niece, because then I would have to deal with one more lunatic.
"That better be the reason. Think anything else about my niece and you will be dead kid." He said while moving his finger over his neck.
"Note taken." I muttered while rolling my eyes. "Didn't you establish this rule when you told me about her becoming my partner?" I asked with an arched eyebrow. He leaned back and rested his chin on his palm, narrowing his eyes at me for the millionth time.
"You have been with me for four years, and I know that if I tell you something only once, you won't listen. So I need to repeatedly tell you in order for it to get drilled in your head. I am not taking any risks with you." He explained sternly.
"Then why the hell did you assign me as her partner? If you really wanted to protect her then you could have assigned, Plumeria or some other female grunt. Why assign a male? I understand why me, since the rest are complete idiots but why?" I asked. He clicked his tongue annoyed and rose from his seat, walking down the steps. Every step he took down, the more I felt my body tremble. I wasn't sure if it was of nervousness or...fear. He stopped just a foot away from me, which was uncomfortable for me. I looked up to him and repressed down the urge of gulping.
"Why are you asking my reasons kid?" He asked.
"Because it seems unreasonable for someone who is overprotective of his niece. If I had a niece or daughter, I would do anything to not place her in situations she doesn't want to be, but it seems like it's only me." I said. He looked down at me.
"So you are implying that I am not taking care of her, is that it?" He asked.
"I'm just saying that it doesn't make any sense, unless... the decision wasn't made by you." I said coming to a sudden conclusion. 'Why else would he assign me as her partner if he doesn't want her to be close to a boy? Unless it wasn't his will to do so but someone else's.' I thought. 'Sometimes, at first glance, the true intentions aren't seen. But after, it becomes as clear as water.' Her voice came back to me.
"Heh, interesting inference you have there kid." He started and then took a hold of my collar, bringing me closer to him. I wince a bit but didn't think of it much since he was giving me a death glare. "But I suggest you not look into it any further. Who knows, maybe I will ask my daughter to kill you." He said. I physically froze. The air in the room suddenly became too thick with tension for me to breath in. His hold on my collar making my neck burn. "And you don't want that do you? Don't you have a little mission to become stronger so you can save your family? Well, I suggest you think about that first than over using that brain of yours to come to stupid conclusions." He said and let go of me. I stumbled a few steps backwards. I placed my hand on the back of my neck, feeling a slight pain from how hard he was holding the collar of my hoodie.
"Now leave." He said while turning his back towards me, his two arms behind his back holding each other by the hand. "Tell Plumeria to give you your pay for the day and don't ever talk to me about me taking orders of someone else, got it?" He said firmly while clenching his hands hard, making his knuckles go white.
I didn't say another word and went out the door, slamming it shut. I glared at it for a few seconds before going over to Plumeria's room. I knocked on the door until she opened up with an angered expression on her face.
"What the hell do you want enforcer?!" She growled. The smell of alcohol filled my nose making my nose burn just slightly.
"Are you drinking? Great example you are setting for your brothers and sisters." I said sarcastically. She glared at me.
"And here I thought you would be worried sick." She grumbled. I looked at her a bit confused.
"Worried? Why?" I asked. A small flicker of shock went through her yellow eyes but then she glared at me.
"You mean to tell me that you don't know?!" She growled.
"Know what? That you are addicted to alcohol?" I asked while rolling my eyes. She let her hand slip from the door.
"You really don't know huh?" She asked, her gaze softening.
"Know what for Arceus fucking sake?!" I demanded. She sighed.
"Diana was sent to a job, a mission, and when she is...the chances of her coming back are slim." She said.
"You are telling me she went to a mission that has very high chances of her being killed?!" I growled.
"Exactly that, which is worrying." She said while looking down. 'She must have drank too much alcohol, no way would Diana accept something like that...would she?' I thought to myself. Worry started to creep into my head but I shook it off.
"I'm just here for my money." I said quietly. She turned and opened up a drawer. She got a sack of money out and threw it to me. I barely managed to catch it. I looked inside the sack's contents an nodded. I looked up to Plumeria who was looking at me with slight narrowed eyes.
"I hope she is fine, if what you are telling me is true." I said before turning away and leaving the base.
Diana's POV
The lock finally clicked, indicating that it has been unlocked. A wave of happiness came over me but quickly vanished knowing that I shouldn't get too comfortable yet. I opened the cell door slowly and stepped out. I glanced around, noticing a camera around the corner. I stepped back and reached for the dagger I had hidden near my ankle. 'Good thing I thought of this or I would have been toasted.' I though. I threw it to the camera. It fell down, the loose wires sending a small shock. I took off the dagger from where it had been pinned and looked towards the other hallway, seeing another camera.
I took the broken camera next to me and threw it over to its companion. They both fell with each other. I smirked and walked up again, being careful to not make more noise than what I have done already by breaking two cameras. I then felt my foot go down a little more than the other. I flinched and looked down. 'A pressure plate?!??' I thought. The sudden ringing of alarms echoed through my ears.
"Well shit, I'm so dead." I said through gritted teeth and took off running, but not before grabbing one of the broken cameras. After a few minutes of running I heard footsteps behind me.
"Don't let her get away!" I heard that Dirt Bag of Zain order. I gave him a small death glare from over my shoulder before looking up, seeing the lights of the hallway all hooked in a continuous wire. I threw the broken camera up with my greatest force. The light fell and the rest followed, making the whole hallway dark, as well as blocking the agents' pathway.
"Diana!!!!!" I heard Dirt Bag growl behind me. I glanced over my shoulder before increasing my speed.
