Blue

Here's another oneshot to add to my Techno Bromance collection! What prompted this one was the fact that, in the pilot episode, when Jay tried to ask Nya if she liked blue but couldn't be understood, it was Zane who asked for him. Not Cole, and definitely not Kai. Zane.  So, I figured I would provide a little explanation as to why.

~~~~~~~~
Blue(takes place before and during the Pilot season):
"Hey Zane, what's your favorite color?"
It was a rather calm day. For the first time since Zane had arrived, the three boys had a whole day to themselves to relax. So, naturally, Jay took the opportunity to get to know his new teammate a little better. So far, he learned that Zane was eighteen(two years older than Jay), his birthday was December 23rd, his favorite season was winter(duh), and he really liked birds of prey. Now Jay was curious about what color the platinum blond liked best.
"My favorite color? Hmmmm," Zane hummed as he thought about it. "I would probably say grey."
"Grey?!" Jay gasped in shock, sounding slightly horrified. "But that's so boring! It's such a dull color! And you actually like it?! That's just as bad as Cole liking orange!"
"Hey!" Cole cried indignantly.
Zane shrugged. "I do not mind. I think grey is a nice color, even if it is a little dull. What about you?" He then asked. "What is your favorite color?"
"Blue!" Jay instantly said. "Blue is the absolute best color!"
"Orange is better," Cole argued.
"Not when it's the color of food. Like a certain someone's dinner last night!"
"I told you I don't know how that happened! It was purple when I started!"
"THAT'S EVEN WORSE!"
"Friends, please," Zane tried to calm Jay and Cole down before they really started fighting. "Blue and orange are both good colors. There is no need to fight."
"Hmmph, I still say that blue is the best," Jay grumbled.
"And that is okay, you are entitled to your own opinion," Zane replied.
"Why do you like blue so much, Jay?" Cole asked. "Not judging, just curious."
Jay shrugged. "I dunno. I've just always liked blue. Maybe because there are so many good things that are colored blue--the sky is blue, the ocean is blue, flowers can be blue, my eyes are blue. It's just an awesome color!" He sighed, his expression turning dreamy. "Someday, I'll meet the most beautiful girl in the world, and when I ask her what her favorite color is, she'll say blue."
Cole groaned and rolled his eyes. "Dude, no offense, but that is sooooo cheesy."
Jay scowled and glared at the black haired teen. "Well, screw you, Cole!" he retorted, sticking out his tongue.
"I think that is a lovely thought, Jay," Zane interrupted, smiling gently. "I hope that it comes true."
Jay beamed. "Thanks, Zane! My absolute worst fear is that I do end up meeting the girl of my dreams, but when I go to talk to her, I can't talk! Like, I'm suddenly mute, and I won't be able to ask her if she likes blue!"
Cole frowned. "That sounds rough," he replied, before smiling. "But don't worry buddy. The chance that that ends up happening are about as low as...as...as finding out that Zane is secretly a robot built by the government to spy on us all."
Zane rolled his eyes at the ridiculous statement, but Jay started to look kind of skeptical. "Hmmm," he hummed, leaning over and looking over the platinum blond critically. "Ya know, you might have a point there, Cole..."
"Jay," Zane sighed. "If I was really secretly a robot, wouldn't it be very obvious that I wasn't human? Besides, why would I ever want to spy on you?"
"Hmm, true," Jay relented, backing up. "If you're a robot, then Cole's a dancer!"
Zane snickered slightly at the mental image of Cole in a tutu. Cole noticed this, scowled, and punched Zane in the shoulder. "I know what you're imagining, and lemme tell you: it's not funny," he grouched.
"Oh, lighten up, Cole! I'm just messing with you," Jay said. "I know there's no way that you actually dance."
"Heh, heh, yeah. Absolutely no way..." Cole muttered nervously underneath his breath.
~~~~~~~(Time Skip)~~~~~~~

She. Was. Gorgeous.

Jay was really glad that his hood covered his mouth, otherwise his gaping jaw would have been exposed for all to see.

He had just been in a fight after waking up to find himself, Cole, and Zane tied up and suspended over the ground. They had managed to get down and engaged their enemy, but during the fight, Cole had accidentally swung his scythe right into Jay's throat. It hurt, but Jay was willing to go through the pain all over again just to witness this sight.

Kai, their newest teammate, had just flew in from out of nowhere on top of a red dragon. He had expertly landed in a clearing near him, and managed to scare Cole into a bush. Jay was about to laugh at Cole's reaction to his number one fear when he noticed someone sitting behind Kai on the dragon.

It was a girl. And, as previously mentioned, she was absolutely gorgeous.

She was wearing a pretty red dress with matching pants and gold accents. A golden bracelet with a red gem in the center circled around her wrist. Her hair, black as the night sky, was cut short in a bob cut and framed her heart-shaped face perfectly. Her eyes, a cool amber that held a hint of fire deep within them. Her lips were ruby red and full. She had a few smudges of dirt and grime on her face and arms, but that just enhances her beauty. She held herself confidently, and looked like she was ready to take on the world.

She was absolutely perfect. Cupid's arrow had struck Jay's heart, and it struck it hard.

An embarrassing squeak escaped the blue ninja's throat before he could stop it. The angel before him--because there was no way that she wasn't one, she was too perfect!--turned her gaze onto him.

Oh my gosh, she's looking at me, Jay's mind raced. She's looking at me, oh Spinjitzu Master, she'slookingatme!!! Quick, say something, anything!

He suddenly remember his conversation with Cole and Zane a few weeks ago, and before he knew it, he blurted out a question.

...or at least, he tried to.

"Ooo u lik blu?"

A part of Jay's heart died inside when he heard himself try and talk. The blow to the throat had been more severe than he had thought and what words he could get out were mumbled to the point of being unrecognizable, as evidenced when the girl cocked her head to the side and adopted a confused look. It was Jay's worst nightmare come true. It was over for him, completely over.

Luckily, someone came to his rescue.

Before the blue ninja could keel over from despair, he saw Zane walk up and stand next. "My apologies," he said, his voice as calm as ever. "My friend has suffered an injury to his throat and cannot talk at the moment. But, I believe he wishes to inquire whether or not you like the color blue."

"Blue?" the angel asked, her voice, well, angelic. Slowly, a smile spread across her face. "It's my favorite color."

Jay's brain short circuited.

He could hardly believe his ears! Subtly, he pinched his arm to make sure that he wasn't dreaming. Upon feeling a slight bit of pain, he confirmed that yes, he was very much awake, and that this was really happening.

This...was really happening.

An angel that must have fallen from heaven had appeared before him, and said that her favorite color was blue. His hands clamped over his mouth to prevent himself from screaming, and he started taking in deep breaths, trying not to pass out.

He heard Zane chuckle before he felt a hand on his shoulder. "Come on, Jay," the white ninja said, gently turning Jay around. "Let us see if we can find our weapons."

The platinum blond slowly coaxed Jay to walk with him. When they were a few feet away from the others, Jay turned towards his older teammate, his sapphire blue eyes sparkling. He couldn't really talk, but he did squeal with joy.

Zane laughed at Jay's obvious excitement. "I take it that you are planning to ask that girl out on a date eventually, yes?" he asked, his own blue-gray eyes shining with happiness for his friend.

Jay quickly nodded before leaping forward and giving Zane a big hug. "Tank oo!!!" he said.

Zane blinked once in confusion before he understood what Jay had said. Smiling fondly, he returned the hug, albeit with a little less force. "You are most welcome, my friend."

They stayed like that for a while, until Jay had finally calmed down enough to go out in front of his new crush without having a new meltdown. For the rest of the day, even when they were fighting skeletons in the Underworld, Jay was on cloud nine. He had just found his forever girl and he couldn't wait to have the chance to ask her out...provided that he could get past her overprotective older brother.

He was also happy to discover that his bond with his friends was getting stronger by the hour. In fact, the blue ninja would go so far as to call them his brothers.

Especially with a certain Master of Ice that had helped in his time of need.
