Missed Flight

I woke up in a daze. Sitting up in the hard plastic chair I stretched my arms and looked around the Chicago airport.

It was nearly empty.

I suddenly stood up and went to look at the flight times. There were no scheduled flights for take off.

Shit. I slept and missed my flight to New York City and the next one isn't until tomorrow afternoon. Dejected I walked over to the reception desk to be met with a middle-aged woman typing away at her computer.

"Excuse me," I muttered.

She looked up at me, "yes?"

"I missed my connecting flight do you have any hotel rooms I can stay in?"

"Oh let me check," she said and went back to her computer, "there is one double room open but it appears we have another passenger who missed the same flight in there."

I sighed, great first I get kicked out of my parent's house New Year's Eve, I miss my flight to New York to live with my grandparents and now I have to share a room with some random person.

"Yeah, I guess that'll have to work, thank you," I responded.

"Ok," she smiled, "The hotel is actually connected to the airport so just follow the signs and you should make it there just fine."

"Ok thank you," I said and walked off in search of the hotel.

It was easy enough to find the entrance so I walked into the lobby, retrieved my room key from the front desk and headed up to the room.

Sliding the key into the lock I open the door to find a room with two full sized beds, a chair, a small bathroom and a girl.

She was just sitting on the bed staring down at her phone. Her black hair was cascading over her slender frame.

"Umm... Hello there?" I said timidly, quietly setting my stuff down.

Startled she jumped a little and looked at me. I was mesmerized by her piercing green eyes. God, she was cute.

"Jeez, you scared me, who are you?" She questioned, staring skeptically at me.

"My name is Roseanne and you are?" I said cheerfully sticking out my hand.

She looked at my hand for a few seconds before slowly taking it, "I'm Juniper but please just call me June," she answered.

"Oh! Juniper I like it," I said smiling.

"Thanks, I don't, I think it's childish," she stated blushing a bit.

I plopped down next to her on the bed and glanced at her phone which was still on. On the screen were messages to what seemed like a friend of hers.

"Who's that?" I said curiously, pointing at her phone, hoping it wasn't a boyfriend.

"Hey, why are you snooping in my messages?" She said, suddenly angry.

"I'm sorry I just read the contact name that's all," I said holding my hands up.

"Oh," she sighed and relaxed a bit. "He's just my roommate, I was letting him know I won't be home until tomorrow evening."

Oh, thank god, in this first few minutes of meeting her I've almost developed this attraction to her. Like how when you a stranger on the subway or bus and you instantly feel this connection, like you wanna talk to them and just know them.

"Hey," Juniper interrupted my thoughts, "Come back to planet Earth," she said, mocking me.

"Oh sorry, I just got lost in thought, why were you headed to The Big Apple on New Year's Eve?" I inquired.

"Oh, well I went all the way out to Denver to see my family and I decided this was the year I was gonna come out to them since I was supporting myself in New York City. Well, long story short, they yelled at me and said I need to get rid of "this foolish mindset" so I left and I booked the earliest flight back home, but my flight was late due to the weather and I missed the connecting one," She said staring down at the floor.

"Oh, I'm so sorry June," I said, "Your parents suck."

"Yeah I guess they do, but I still love them in a way, what about you?" I asked.

"Oh, I was kicked out cause apparently my parents can't support me anymore and I'm too much work for them."

She looked at me sympathetically, "Oh that sucks."

"Huh, I guess we are just a couple of family rejects," I mumbled.

"Yeah, we are," She smiled a little.

"Say how about instead of sitting around being upset about our shitty days, we do something fun to celebrate this New Year," I said.

"And what do you have in mind, Rosie," She said looking at me.

Ignoring the nickname she gave me, cause honestly I kinda liked it, I said, "I'm gonna shower because frankly I'm kinda nasty right now and we are gonna order our favorite takeout, buy some booze, put on our comfiest clothes and watch the New Year's Eve celebration."

Her eyes lit up, "that sounds like a plan."

"Ok!' I said excitedly as clapped my hands together, "do you mind buying the alcohol while I go shower, I believe there is a place right across the street"

"Ok sounds great," she smiled.

Man, she has such a beautiful smile.

"Alright, we meet back here at 10:00 okay?"

"Yes ma'am," she agreed.

I got up and collected my stuff to hop in the shower while June got ready to leave. I couldn't help but try to steal glances at her while she was getting ready. Also during the entire time I showered, I thought about her, about sharing this New Years Eve with her. Huh, maybe it won't be so bad. I got out of the shower, dried my hair and put on a comfy pair of shorts, and a plain black t-shirt. Walking out of the room I saw that June was also back, she had also put on her comfy clothes and was watching T.V. She turned her gaze away from the T.V. to look at me.

" Hey there," she smiled "You look cute."

I stopped mid-step and felt a blush creeping up my neck.

"D-do I really?" I stuttered.

"Yes, of course, Rosie," She laughed.

"Oh well t-thank you, and so do you," I said, running my hand through my long blonde hair

I went and sat down next to her on the bed and look at what was on the T.V. It was the pre-New Year's Eve show. Juniper ordered takeout for us and we just sat together and watched the show. My mind was running wild with what she just said. Does she like me or was it just a compliment? Does she know I like her back? I couldn't stop thinking about her, I could hardly pay attention to the show, half the time my eyes were wandering back to her. How her olive skin glowed in the light, her eyes sparkled with excitement for the New Year, and her mouth turned slightly upward in contentment. She looked over at me, effectively catching me staring at her. Her smile got bigger.

"Shouldn't you be watching the show," she teased.

"I'd rather be watching you," I blurted out, suddenly regretting what I had just said.

It was her turn to blush, "Well that may be just a bit creepy, but thank you" she said, her smile coming back to her face.

It was silent for a few minutes, as I didn't know what to say. I turned back towards the screen and there were only two minutes until the New Year.

"Hey thank you, for making this New Years Eve great, June, you made me feel so much better," I said finally.

"And thank you for being here with me to celebrate the start of a fabulous year, and maybe the start of something new," she winked at me.

Taken aback once again I just stared at her. Speaking suddenly seemed like a feat for Olympic athletes. I was so stunned I didn't even notice her leaning in to kiss me. Her soft lips were suddenly against mine. I was too stunned to respond. She pulled back with a worried expression on her face.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean t--"

She didn't finish her sentence because I quickly pulled her into another kiss, just as the people on the screen were counting down from 5, and I heard everyone celebrating.

I pulled back with just enough time to say, "Happy New Year."

"Happy New Year," she said back before I pressed my lips against hers once again.

After we finished kissing, she gave me a bright smile and wrapped her arms around me pulling me close to her. She snuggled into me and a few minutes later, her breathing slowed and I realized she had fallen asleep. Maybe this year won't be so bad, I thought before falling asleep with June in my arms.
