[25] Yes
Emmy jumps up and down with excitement and nervous energy as the music begins to play within the church, cueing her to begin her walk down the aisle.
She feels as if something is wrong.
She holds on to her stomach, overthinking. She is barely showing and yet she feels as if her little bump is the size of a mountain. She feels like all eyes will be on her growing stomach rather than her.
She paces her dressing room as the music stops and restarts. She can't go out there like this. She is a mess! She can't handle her emotions. Maybe she'll blame it on the pregnancy. Or maybe she is just emotional in general because she is about to get married to the man of her dreams but she can't seem to find the strength to walk a few feet to be by his side.
The guests begin to whisper among themselves.
They wonder why she has not come out yet.
Even Chad is concerned.
He knows she would never leave him.
Not like this.
But why isn't she coming?
The guests sit impatiently in the beautifully decorated church and wait anxiously in their seats. They all can not wait to see the bride in her gown. They wonder what is taking her so long.
Emmys father makes eye contact with Chad from across the room. He nods his head and exits, in search of his missing daughter.
He curses under his breath as he searches the winding halls and empty rooms for Emmy.
He finds her in an out-cove near the exit of the church. "Em, what are you doing?"
"Plotting ways to avoid telling Chad I'm going to die." She turns to face her father.
"You are not going to die Emmy." He shakes his head, wondering why she is stuck on this.
"That's sweet of you to try to pretend like that's not the same thing that killed mom. I can't leave Chad like mom left you. I can't do that to him. Look at what happened to you!" Emmy reminds him of how he fell apart after her mother's death.
"The amount of change in technology and medical care has improved so, so much since your mother died. They didn't catch it back then. But they caught it now. You're going to be fine." He assures her.
Things are so much different now.
"I don't want to die dad! I can't marry Chad."
Emmys father sighs. "Sweetie, if this baby is going to kill you, it's going to kill you regardless of you are with Chad or not. That's not how it works." He is brutally honest with her.
She needs that.
"But if I'm not with him, he can't be sad that I'm dead." She tries to rationalize her thoughts.
"I strongly disagree." He grabs her hands. Chad runs around the hall and stops dead in his tracks when he sees Emmy standing there in her white gown with tears in her eyes. "And just like a movie, here comes Prince Charming."
Chad walks over with a purpose and latches on to his fiancé, squeezing her so tight she might pop.
"Chad," she tries to keep from crying as she pulls away from him. It hurts to see him when she is holding on to this secret.
"Please don't say you can't marry me. Whatever it is, we can work through it." He begs.
"We can't work through it if I'm dead." She states morbidly.
"Wh-what?" He stumbles with his words.
"My mother died when I was very young-"
"Yes, I know that." He cuts her off by accident, wanting to let her know that he is listening.
"She was diagnosed with a blood disease after her pregnancy with me. And it killed her."
"Okay, I'm not sure what you are worried about." Chad does not understand.
Emmys father glances at his daughter, hoping she will toughen up like he knows she can and will tell him.
"I'm pregnant Chad." She warns him. "And I've been diagnosed with the same blood disease."
"So you're telling me you aren't even going to try to fight? You won't fight for your life. Or for me? O-or the baby? That doesn't really sound like you at all Emmy." Chad stands up straight, realizing he had slumped over at the news. "I'm certainly not going to let this stop me and I don't think you should let it stop you."
"To be fair, you aren't the one who is going to die. It's not stopping you from anything."
"Actually, you are right. Your blood disease isn't stopping me from living out the rest of my life with my wife. You are. If you walk away, you're giving up on everything we could have had. You are giving up if you leave. Do you really want to give up?"
Emmy shakes her head. "I really hate how good you are with words sometimes." She smiles for what feels like the first time in ages. "Lets go get married."
"Yes!" Emmy's father cheers as they run back towards their future together.
