[16] Postpone
"Dad." Emmy rolls her eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"Don't act dumb Emmy. You know I work here." Her dad scoffs at her attitude. When he saw her name on the list of detainees this morning he wasn't shocked. He has been waiting for her to be brought into this jail so they could be reunited.
Today is finally the day it happens.
"I'm going to give you two some space." Fae tries to leave the awkward conversation. She is very uncomfortable.
"No, stay for another moment please." The chief instructs Fae. "I believe I overheard that you were talking about a Chad. Is that true Emmy?" He asks.
Emmy shakes her head. "I didn't say anything about Chad. I don't even know a Chad." Emmy lies to avoid talking about him with her father.
Emmy and Fae make eye contact. Emmy can tell that Fae is nervous. "Please let her leave. This is between you and me. She's obviously uncomfortable." Emmy points to the poor girl.
"Fine. Fae, you are dismissed. But I need you to bring Officer Parkson in here. Immediately." The chief instructs her.
"I'm sorry." Fae mouths to Emmy before bolting out of the room.
Emmy is confused. "You need a witness in here at all times? What you are acrid of? Me breaking out of these bars and strangling you? Trust me, I would if I could." Emmy spits words of venom at her father. She despises him.
Chad enters the room in his police uniform. "Emmy?" He asks, walking up to the bars to touch her face.
"You are a cop?" She asks, backing away from the bars. Chad never told her he was cop. He kept that part of his life a secret from her. Of course, she kept her life of crime secret from him as well.
"Chad, you know Emmy?" The chief asks rhetorically. He knows that this is the Chad he heard Emmy talking about when he entered the room.
"Are you kidding?" Chad asks. "She's my fiancé. She's going to be my wife! I'm supposed to marry her later today." He says, pulling at his hair. He is so confused at what is going on here.
"Are you sure you still want to do that?" He asks Chad. "She's not the girl you think she is."
"No offense chief, but what do you know about her?" Chad asks. He doesn't believe his chief could know more about Emmy than he does. Chad is positive that this whole thing is just one big mixup.
"Oh, I would say I know a lot. Emmy is my daughter."
Chad is shocked. He has been totally blindsided.
"You don't know anything about me. I would hardly call yourself my father. You've just been a stranger to be since mom died. Don't act like you know my whole story." Emmy defends herself.
"What did you do?" Chad asks, turning to his fiancé.
"I-" Emmy chokes on her words. She is at a loss for what to say. So much is happening at once that she can't formulate a proper response to his question.
"Public intoxication. She flashed a man and his daughter late last night." The chief explains.
Chad shakes his head. "You understand that this is going to go on your permanent record don't you?" Chad asks Emmy as he reaches through the bars for her hand.
Emmy nods. She is fully aware of what is going to happen with this arrest. "It won't happen again Chad. I'm so sorry."
"I wouldn't believe her if I were you Chad." Emmy's father scoffs and turns towards Chad. "Here's her file. Take a good look at it and tell me if you still really want to marry her after reading it." Emmy's father hands Chad the file.
Chad takes the folder from his Chief's hands and looks up at Emmy.
"Chad, please don't. I'm begging you." Emmy slams herself against the bars in an attempt to take the file from him. She doesn't want him reading anything that is inside of it.
"You got arrested Emmy." Chad shakes his head. "You are a criminal now." Chad steps away from Emmy. "And this file suggests this wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened."
Emmy nods. She knows this looks very bad for her. "I know. Just please, ignore him. He's just trying to punish me. Don't read it, please Chad." Emmy begins to cry. She can't beat the thought of Chad reading all the terrible things she has done. Once he reads them, he will forget all of the good she has done.
"I wish I didn't have to Emmy. But your reaction tells me I do." Chad opens the file and begins reading the paperwork within it. His eyes dart back and forth as he reads the juicy information.
Chad looks up at Emmy and slaps the file shut. "I- I have to go." Chad rushes away with tears in his eyes.
"Chad!" Emmy reaches out of the bars and tries to grab him before he can leave. Chad ignores her. He needs to get out.
Obviously, the wedding is going to be postponed.
"Why?" Emmy sinks to her knees. "Why would you do this to him? To me?" She asks her father as he smirks and exits the room. His work here is done.
