untitled
if you said you were cold I would light a match and set ablaze the pile of sticks that always seems to be laying at my feet
would hope that my tired burning bones would be enough to keep you warm
but there's a slight problem
and it's never been you it's been how you looked at me that one time
the way you took my hand those two times
and the way you teased me those countless times
it's the way I just had to look back that one time
the way I held your hand those two times
the way I smiled at your teasing those countless times
and now everything I do seems more problem than solution
more effect than cause
because
if you said you were warm I would put out the fire
become an ocean, phase into ice
I'd howl at the moon with you in the darkness of night
that sunless expanse of glowing eyes just around the corner
if you said you were sick of summer days I would become a blizzard
if you were done with winter I would drag the reluctant sun into the sky
if you were bored I would show you lightning and clasp a necklace of thunder around your neck to match
if you just wanted rest I would swathe you in the nighttime
they say if you love someone they hang the moon
and I guess this is the part where I say I'd do it twice but
this is hard
and the crescent bend of the orb in the night sky just reminds me of your smile
and even writing this poem is painful
because we're young
too young they say to know
and sometimes you start to believe what they say
once
twice
then countless times
