The introduction to her new job was swift but she felt like she could manage and settle in without needing further support. Her job was after-all working with numbers which she felt she was cocky enough to admit she was just gifted at. Her own cubicle. Harper smiled to herself skimming her fingers across the plastic surface of her desk enjoying how she could imagine plastering photos of her parents, her and her best friend Daniella, and potentially the future-boyfriend if her love life ever improved. Harper was already imagining the cute pencil case she'd have, the multi-coloured pots for bits and bobs and themed calendar blu-tacked to the cubicle's wall. This was it. A job for life!
Harper quickly sent a message to Daniella, and then one to her parents before putting it on silent as she dropped it in her bag. The excitement was buzzing inside her. She was actually looking forward to working. Collins was a friendly boss and she was pretty sure, she had near enough made a friend, the person adjacent to her cubicle. Alexia, was her name. She seemed nice enough. So, despite this morning's instance with puddle, Harper seemed confident and happy enough to relax into the day.
Collins had left her with a couple sheets to begin working on. The data was fairly important and once she had finished, she was instructed to share it into the wider database along with where the rest of her peers updated and filed. It wasn't even that hard to master as she stretched her fingers and began plotting figures on a scrap piece of paper from her notebook, whilst tapping on the calculator to ensure the numbers were correct.
Harper loved mathematics. It was her strong point hence why her degree was specialised in that area. It just all felt surreal actually working. It was not actually that long ago when she was completing her dissertation, working hard to finish with a 1st, and now here, actually working in her dream job. The hard work was worth it.
Around eleven o'clock, Harper had finished the spreadsheets. She had chattered to Alexia before deciding to head on over to the office kitchen for some free coffee and small snacks. Another reason why she adored this place.
Collins bumped into her on the way there. "Harper, how's it going?" he asked, carrying blue and red files within his plump hands.
"Yeah, I've just finished the load you assigned," she said, smiling proud.
"That's great work. Very speedy," he complimented. "Actually—now that you're here. Do you think you could do me a favour?"
"Sure, what can I do?"
"I was just on my way to drop a couple things off but I've just got word that one of last month's spreadsheet is playing up. We need that for our troublesome client. Do you think you could drop these off?" he asked, holding out the files.
"Sure—"
"---This might be a bit daunting for your first day but they're for Mr Brewer. They're records he's asked for. Trust me, all you need to do is just give them to his PA. She'll do the rest. Is that okay?" he interjected.
Harper wasn't entirely too convinced she was feeling confident to but if it earnt her extra brownie points, who was she to refuse. Besides, it was not like she needed to directly give them to him. "Yeah, I can do that. It's the top floor, right?"
"Yeah, floor thirty-two," he instructed, before thanking her as he passed her.
The lift ascended, the buttons on the dash board lighting up as it climbed up. She held the documents in her arms, cradling them like a baby as she tapped her feet on the floor in boredom. She was craving her coffee more than anything. But at least this was only a quick job in and out.
She exited the lift, greeted by a visitor's area. Two grey couches, an overhead light shining down on a glass coffee table with what appeared to be a bowl of mints on top, and a couple of magazines noticeably all to do with business.
Harper spotted the oval desk but was startled to not find a person behind that said desk. She headed on over and observed almost immediately the note on the desk.
'ON MATERNITY LEAVE. NEW TEMPORARY PA SHOULD BE ASSIGNED SOON. ALL FILES AND URGENT REQUESTS MUST BE GIVEN TO MR BREWER DIRECTLY'
Ah, shit. Harper groaned inside. I didn't ask for this. It was not only daunting but if he remembered her face, she didn't exactly make a good impression with all her gawking. She wanted to make a run for it, dash the files on the side and leave but that wouldn't be good start to her career.
Instead, she had to face the fear that was rising in the back of her throat. Harper headed towards the two large doors, stopping outside as she took a deep breath. Come on. All she had to do was drop files off. Nothing else, other than that.
Her hand shakily knocked on the door.
"Come in," a voice beckoned on the other side. It made her even more anxious from its authority and power oozing from such a beautiful man. Was she again thinking how beautiful this man was? Yes, yes, she was.
Harper opened the door, entering quietly inside as she tried to maintain a professional attitude and not choke up with fear. She observed how he sat in a large, dominant red chair and he was focused entirely on his desktop computer. Aside of her as she trailed down the carpeted floor towards the desk, large bookcases lined the wall, full of old editions what it seemed, perhaps never touched.
She chose not to add any more discussion and left the files on the edge where she spotted space. Her feet began to turn until his voice invaded into the space, attracting her attention.
"You know it's rude to stare," he declared.
Shit, he's probably referring to earlier. "Er, sorry? W—what do you—" she approached with an answer but failed to keep it going.
His brown acorn eyes met hers. "It's rude. To stare," he repeated.
"Erm, I apologise. I have a bad...habit of—of—"
"---What's your name?" he asked, seemingly curious from the perplexing look on his face. She was doing it again, staring. Observing his defined facial features. The jawline sharp enough to cut paper, his sharp cheeks and nose. And then that brown tousled hair on top. He was a sight. A sight she couldn't stop rudely staring at.
"H-Harper Daniels, sir," she replied shakily. Was they really having a conversation? This was supposed to be a in and out job.
"Harper," he reiterated. Ah, god, the way it rolled off his tongue was making her feel hot all of sudden. "You work on the finance department I presume?"
"Yes, sir. I just started today."
"Interesting..."
Harper was squeezing her toes down in her flats, wondering why on earth she was still doing here. She wasn't quite sure she liked that sly smile on his lips as he clasped the files she dropped on his desk. Was she supposed to go now? Could she leave? She couldn't bear any second any longer in here.
He began flickering through them, taking his time. Each time, he turned a page, he'd flicker a quick glance to Harper.
"I'm done with these," he announced casually. "You can take them back to your department manager." He slid them to the side. Harper stood there.
"Well?"
He was expecting her to go get them it seemed. She bit her inner cheek as she trailed to the side and clasped them.
"Also, return with a coffee. Just a shot of milk, no sugar. I like it from Beverly's," he said, without looking up. "Company card, here," he added, sliding a card on top of the document.
Harper blinked. What on earth? "A c-coffee?" she stuttered, unable to comprehend nor understand the situation.
"Yes, a coffee. Do you know what one looks like?" he said.
"I—I—"
"Is there a problem with that?"
"No, no problem," Harper replied.
"Good. Then go grab me a coffee and you can report to your department boss that you no longer work there no more. Your position has changed," he stated, clicking his mouse as his attention focused on the computer screen.
"W-what?"
"Do I have to repeat myself, Miss Daniels?" he said, a little vexed as he looked up. "I have asked for a coffee. You're tiring my patience by just standing there."
"But my position? I don't understand," Harper objected.
"I need a new personal assistant. You will do," he answered matter of fact before diverting his attention to the screen once again.
Harper gawked; her mouth could have dropped to the floor. What the hell is going on?
"Miss Daniels, may I remind you I grow more and more vexed each second you spend dawdling here. If you don't move...you're more than welcome to hand in your resignation," he stated, a casual hint of humour within his tone.
Harper could not get over it. Her feet hastily took movement as she stalked out his office. What had just happened in there? Her heart was hammering, her head very dizzy and she felt nauseous. This wasn't right. Wasn't fair. She was hired to be a finance specialist not some personal assistant and especially not to him!
She couldn't understand why she was complying. Did she not have a backbone? Why was she standing for this? Probably the fear of failure, money and a job.
***
Collins had given her an expression of commiseration, confused just as she when she announced she was no longer working for the department. Harper had sworn to herself that even as she found herself in this confusing predicament, she would find another job in the meantime, and just so she could earn some money.
How on earth she was going to explain this to her parents was a mystery. She couldn't even explain it to herself.
Carrying his coffee as requested, she entered his office after knocking on the door. Part of her wanted to demand his reason for forcing her to this position, another was her dominant cowardly side telling her to shut up and be glad to have a job. Didn't exactly sound like a good feminist.
"Your coffee," she muttered.
The end of lips curled. "Thank you, Miss Daniels. You might as well make yourself comfy," he said slyly, ushering towards the two chairs opposite his desk. "There's a lot you have to do."
