*THIS CHAPTER HAS BEEN EDITED AND ALTERED*
Daniella had been insistent Sunday night to know every little detail about Harper's adventure with the boss. Harper could only keep recycling the same phrase 'it was a normal business meeting, nothing more' refusing to add the details that her boss had quite possibly seen her naked and then had most definitely when he walked on her in the shower, deliberately. She was not in the mood to divulge that detail and listen to Daniella go on and on.
And before she knew it, it was Monday morning again.
To say she was anxious was an understatement. After that chaotic weekend, she wasn't sure what mood to expect him in or if the dynamic of the relationship had truly changed. Were they were going to be weird around each other, more understanding or was he just going to return his usual demeanour. These thoughts were racing around her mind as she entered the lift shaft amongst a dozen or so employees sharing the enclosed space. The CEO hadn't seen them naked; the thought crossed her mind making her blush. That was definitely not a normal occurrence.
As she exited the lift and headed towards her oval-shaped desk, she could hear confrontation exploding from his office. She couldn't pretend that she wasn't intrigued as she slowly sat down in her chair and gently placed her handbag aside her feet.
-"Son, you've completely made a fool of yourself. Walter is an old friend of mine just as much as he was the board's and you're telling me, you just turned down the deal!" An unfamiliar voice broke out into fury, their voice trailing down the corridor.
"I don't give a shit, dad," she heard James bark back. "The man is delusional. I won't have him take advantage him of my PA. He's a creep. I don't know what old tricks you used to get up to but I won't be in a partnership with someone like that."
Harper's interest peaked even more then. Was that why he was angry after the meeting? Take advantage of me? What did he mean by that? What had been said in there? She was desperate to know what had gone on but even more surprised by his defence to somewhat protect her from whatever malicious thing was proposed.
"Oh, grow up, James. I'm sure Walter meant it as a meaningless joke. You're ridiculous. Turning down a deal over a girl," his father who she could only presume for definite was his relationship to James, responded furiously back.
"I don't have time for this. Just let me run my business, dad," James replied calmly, his tone notching down a few as the conversation suddenly became less clear for Harper to tune into.
Hearing footsteps coming down towards her, she immediately distracted her attention to her desktop computer, quickly pretending to type which only resembled incoherent letters jumbled up together on the opened document.
Briefly catching a glimpse, she watched as his father shook hands with James sternly before disembarking from the scene and into the lift. James sighed.
"You didn't hear any of that, correct?" James asked her. He sounded vexed so she chose to lie shaking her head as she quietly muttered a no. "Good," he added, raking his right hand through his hair in frustration. "Could you grab me a coffee? I'm parched. And oh, get on top of those documents I need you to send out." Then he left the scene without another word needing to be said.
She couldn't lie when she knew she wanted to interrogate him to know what he meant by 'taking advantage of her' in that discussion but she could tell from his demeanour he was not in the mood to share.
After fetching him his coffee, catching up with her work and amending several tasks that wanted re-doing, she was just about exhausted as she headed into the cafeteria, alone and a bit fed-up. Since moving from the existing position to the CEO's very own personal assistant, she had missed out on the opportunity on making proper friends. Now, she was just 'billy-no-mates'.
Sliding her food tray off the silver rack after paying the cashier, Harper inwardly sighed, finding very little comfort in the fact that she recognized the odd faces from her floor sat around a table, laughing and conferring together. They probably didn't remember who she was.
Spotting a vacant table, Harper headed over to it, claiming the red chair as she slapped her tray down onto the table. God, this felt like very first day of school. But just always on repeat. No wonder, she liked eating at her desk.
Digging her fork into her spaghetti, ignorant to the surroundings around her, Harper was suddenly startled by the intrusion of a voice entering the space. She looked up, revealing Elliot, she had met a couple weeks back smiling down at her.
"Hey, mind if I join?" he asked, accompanied with a dazzling smile.
"Sure, please do." Harper smiled back in return.
"Ah, you went for option one," he said, referring to her choice of today's menu. "I just couldn't resist the bangers and mash," he added, picking up his knife and fork to dig into his appetising meal. "So, how are you doing? I haven't seen you for a while but then again, it's not like my presence is ever needed up there." His eyes looking up to the ceiling to infer to the CEO.
Harper relaxed a little back in her chair, enjoying the company as she settled to explain what she could, leaving out the parts about last weekend. "Er, yeah, it's something. I just can't wait to go back to my normal position. It's so tiring and I feel like a hamster in a ball. Did you know that he even gets me to book his weekly detox massage sessions and-oh, I have to send the delivery to restock his kitchen. I mean, I'm literally spoon-feeding the guy!"
Elliot laughed. "My, my. Sounds absolutely great." The sarcasm laced within his tone made Harper chuckle in return knowing full on well that her job was beyond dull.
For the remaining hour of her lunch, she sat talking to Elliot hoping it would never end. Although part of her felt bad whenever she slightly insulted James, it immediately washed away knowing she deserved to have a bit of banter on the guy. It was also nice for once to not be sitting alone or having to sit behind her desk, eating alone. Now, she could confidently say she had a friend.
"Ah, I love that," Elliot remarked, as they headed to the lifts. "You know if he isn't paying you triple, I'd fill his coffee with salt!"
Harper laughed.
"Miss Daniels."
The familiar sound of that voice sent chills down her spine. Turning on her heels, she immediately felt herself curl into a ball at the sight of him walking towards her. She gave a quick glimpse at Elliot who offered her a sympathetic smile before fleeing the scene.
"I see you're finding it quite amusing that you're half an hour late," he said, sounding a little vexed and somewhat focused on Elliot who had just headed into the lift.
"I-I, I don't think I'm late, sir. I took my break half an hour ago," she objected knowing very well she was not being tardy.
"I don't care, I expected you a while back. We have spreadsheets to be sent out. So, you can quit messing around and accompany me back to the office," he replied, snapping his fingers to usher her to follow.
Harper hated that. It made her feel like a dog. It was just darn disrespectful.
Entering the fourth lift that was conveniently empty, Harper sighed and made it known.
"Whatever are you sighing for?" he asked, perplexed and leaning on the banister snaking around the circumference of the lift.
"I would appreciate if you didn't snap at me like I was a dog or something," she found herself confidently saying before almost immediately withdrawing in fear.
His brows lifted in surprise.
"I-I, just, nevermind," she began to blabber.
"Well." He stepped forward, leaving but two steps between them. "I do apologise, Miss Daniels," he muttered, before unexpectedly leaning in and brushing his lips against her ear. "I'll consider your feelings, next time," he added, his tone hot enough to melt butter.
Harper held her breath all that while. Her heart was fluttering and she was completely ensnared by the intoxication of his cologne, a musky and cool scent begging for her attention.
"But maybe, " he then said gently. "You'll consider mine when you're joking around with another employee." Then he smirked as he retreated, before casually grabbing his phone out of his pocket and swiping ahead on the screen.
Harper was stunned. Her words faltered and at that single moment, she wasn't sure if could stand up anymore.
