Chapter 52- Ethan

"Harper Daniels." Ethan announced clasping his hands together. Harper slightly smiled as she followed Dani into the room where crew were setting up in preparation for his interview.

"Mr Donovan." Harper said offering a smile in return although she wasn't really feeling it at all. Ethan shook his head. "Drop the formality, Ethan will be fine." Then he added. "I'm glad you accepted my offer to join me in another coffee. Hopefully we won't be disturbed like our last interruption." He chuckled. "I'll get this interview packed up then we'll be off." Smiling as he followed Dani to the side where she had her box of make-up ready to go.

Then standing in the corner away from any wires knowing they were hazards for her clumsiness she was soon joined by Dani as they watched Ethan speak to the presenter about numerous things.

Dani whispered. "Lucky you, coffee with him. How do you do it?"

Harper rolled her eyes as she muttered back. "Yeah, lucky me. I just hope instead of the interview getting packed up, I have this discussion packed up with him." Dani snorted covering her hand with her mouth trying her best to not disturb the ongoing interview especially from the looks she was gaining from some of the crew.

By the time he was finished, Dani had nudged her to tell her what happens before leaving her alone with Ethan who smiled eagerly. "Shall we?"

Harper followed him to a small café just around the corner where a waitress returned with their cups of coffee placing it down in the centre of the table. The silence was awkward before that and it was only now that Ethan decided to speak up. "I do hope I'm not putting you on the naughty list for missing work." He smiled then took a sip from his cup.

"I don't exactly have a job so no its fine." Harper replied refusing to meet his eyes as she took a sip from her cup herself. Ethan's eyebrows lifted as she struggled to get his words out. "No job? Harper, I don't understand. How?"

Harper dreaded this; she had been planning ways to dodge this. "I guess my boss didn't see me fit enough for the job." She lied.

"That doesn't sound like you. Might I add I have seen your outstandable CV. That is most irritating." He said shaking his head. Harper shrugged her shoulders. "Its fine, I have experience so getting work shouldn't be too hard."

Ethan shook his head as he leaned more over the table. "Harper, I won't accept that. My earlier offer stands before to work for me. Our financial department needs someone like you. You shouldn't have even had been under as his PA."

Harper smiled slightly. "I thank you but I would see that extremely as unfair to others that may be waiting in line for a job at your firm."

"No, no. Harper, if more, this firm has been waiting for you. Please consider my offer. Others I have looked at do not meet my requirements and I tell you...I do have high standards." He objected. Harper didn't answer for that moment and only took another sip from her coffee.

Ethan sighed as he looked down to the table before meeting her eyes again. "Harper, I don't want to lie anymore. I have been. Mr Brewer's firm and mine have more than light competition, it's very personal to the matter. And I feel that you might be lying to me about the real reason he dismissed you." Harper's eyebrows lifted up as she bit down on her lip. Ethan shook his head as he added. "You don't have to tell me the truth but I just want to tell you the real truth. I feel you have a right to know."

Harper shook her head. "I don't think it's necessary."

"But I do." Ethan replied. He briefly looked around him before adding. "James was once by best friend, whatever you want to call it. Mate, buddy, basically we were close. Close that we once went to the same private school then university later." Harper couldn't deny that she wanted to listen on.

Ethan closed his eyes for a second then continued. "We were both insane in our Uni years. Hell, we had the woman. Then after we were both settled into our father's firms, we started to drift knowing our friendship couldn't really last now that we were in competition. It was then I started to settle down, I fell in love."

Harper piped in. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but what does this have to do with my job?"

Ethan pressed his lips together before replying. "I know what James is like and I know...he might have put you in an uncomfortable position."

Harper said nothing back and only listened as he continued. "The reason why is my engagement party. I had proposed to the woman of my dreams. Katrina her name was." His words began to drift as he looked away for a second almost getting distracted himself. "I had invited James, I wanted him to be there. The party was great, everyone loved by fiancé and I loved her. It was late when I noticed Katrina was missing for a while so I dismissed myself and headed upstairs to see if she was about."

Harper's stomach tied into a knot. She dreaded what he was going to say. She just knew. Though much as she knew, it didn't mean that she wanted it to be true.

Ethan wetted his bottom lip as he laughed darkly to himself. "Yeah, you know what I see?" He then looked down to his coffee cup before looking back up. "James getting cosy with my fiancé, locking lips. That was my engagement over."

Harper gasped inside with horror. She felt sick. All the hope she had for James was flushed away. She barely managed words. "I'm so sorry."

Ethan shook his head. "Hey, I should have known. My fault, James always had the problem worse than me. I only pretended but really I wanted to settle down. Find a girl, get married and what does he do? Take her away from me. Katrina begged me to take her back. I couldn't though. No I couldn't trust having another woman in my life to see James take them away from me again. You know what is so good about all of this, I actually forgave him. But I guess he still has the grudge against me." He snorted shaking his head before taking a sip from his coffee.

Harper didn't know what else to say. He was a monster. How could he betray his best friend? This only angered her more and didn't regret the words that came out from her mouth. "He is a horrific friend. He doesn't deserve someone like you. I am so sorry."

"Its fine, honestly Harper, I've learned my lesson. But please you have to consider my offer. It would pain me to think that James has used you in any way. You're a great friend that I consider." He said. Harper smiled taking his hands into her own to try to console him as she replied. "And I accept your offer, Ethan. But please don't blame this all on you, this wasn't your fault." Ethan smiled. "Thank you and I thank you for accepting my offer."

Harper then removed her hands feeling her cheeks inflame red as she replied. "You won't be disappointed at all, Mr Donovan."

He laughed shaking his head. "Ethan, Harper. Call me Ethan."

Harper smiled. "Ethan."

Ethan then returned a smile back.

James sat in the back of the car still moping about as Samuels drove ahead passing various shops. However his attention was suddenly struck to a small café where his own stomach twisted in disgust. The familiar face against that of someone he despised came into view. No, it couldn't be. No. He refused to believe it was Harper leaving that café alongside Ethan who smiled daftly to himself as they headed for the parked SUV outside.

"Samuels, stop the car!" He yelled. "Now!"

Samuels stopped the car bringing it to a half and without second thought, James jumped out rushing down the pavement as he pushed through the crowds.

"Harper!" He shouted in plea. "Harper!"

Harper stopped to a halt hearing her name coming from the crowds. She looked out hearing it once more be shouted.

"Harper, you coming?" Ethan smiled as he held open the door.

James pushed through the last part of the crowd shouting her name once more. This time her eyes came in contact with James whom was out of breath as he halted to his feet. Her anger rose as she clenched her fists. James watched as Harper stared at him blankly not saying a single word then turned to Ethan as if she had never saw him smiling only to him. It stung his heart, like that of a wasp.

"Sorry, I thought I heard my name." Harper smiled as she entered the car moving over to the far side.

"Harper!" He shouted, his words failing to reach her as crowds pushed past him. He saw Ethan smirk to himself as he got in shutting the door after him. James ran into the road, the alert of cars beeping their horns annoyed with his behaviour. It was no good, the car sped off in the distant as he shouted Harper's name in plea.

"Get out the road!" One angered driver shouted.

"Move!" Another yelled.

None of it mattered to him, he just stood there holding the queue until he heard Samuels near the side of him. "Sir, we have to get you back to the car." James followed not listening to the complaints he got as he walked back to his car.

Harper was disgusted with him. That man she realised had done the same to her, only she was part of his game. Poor Ethan. How could one man take another man's woman? Despicable man.

She once loved him. Now she hated him. More than what he had said.
