Chapter 38- Right Move

That same night, Harper was just left more in a puddle, who the hell was sending her flowers? It wasn't Elliot and there was no way James would have, he wasn't your typical gentleman. The only thing she could do was put them a in vase and hopefully this mystery will unravel itself.

Sitting down on the couch near Dani and as far as possible from Duke, they had a movie night chomping on a bowl of popcorn not until the rule of silence was broken as Dani announced. "Did I tell you I am doing makeup for Ethan Donovan again, that...CEO isn't it?" She nodded to herself. "Yes, I'm sure you know who is, right Harper?"

Harper who wasn't particularly listening just nodded even though she didn't have a clue what she just asked. Dani not taking the hint that Harper wasn't listening continued. "Well, he asked if you might be joining me next time when he has his TV interview." Harper then stopped munching halfway through popcorn she had in her mouth as she frowned looking towards Dani. "Seriously?" Dani nodded, shaking her head as she sighed. "Unfair I say, any guy I fancy appears to be going for you. Any reason that might be?" Harper rolled her eyes as she took another mouthful of popcorn. "Well when is this next interview?"

"A week or so." Dani said. "Why is it all the men are suddenly taking a interest in you?" She whined. Harper gasped grabbing a pillow and whacking it around her head.

"I'm sorry." She laughed as she held her hands out to defend her face. It was only when Duke coughed did they both stop and look over to him. He crossed his arms across his chest jerking his chin towards the TV. "You mind?"

Dani rolled her eyes and reaching for a handful of popcorn shoved in her mouth and purposefully chewed loudly only agitating him more. Duke sighed. "You know we haven't done much since I came to visit and its not long till I go back over to the states." Dani cooed mockingly. "Is little Dukey upset?" Chuckling to herself she got up then sat on his lap tugging on his cheeks. "Don't worry, we've got this weekend planned out, right Harper?"

"Yeah. Sure. I'm gonna go put my pyjamas on, be back in a bit." She informed them getting up. Dani jumped off Duke's lap bringing the popcorn bowl closer as she took another handful. Harper smirked to herself at her friend's behaviour, note only friend not friends. The part of her was glad Duke would be off soon but then she still felt bad, should she just forgive and forget? Before she even reached her door, she immediately came to a halt as she placed her ear to the door. If she was right, she had just heard something collapse onto her floor. Harper held her breath as she closed her eyes. What if someone was trying to break in she thought. Quickly moving away from the door she scurried down the hallway and grabbed the nearest thing to a weapon; a lamp. Unplugging it, she rushed back to her door and counted in her head when to attack as the distant sound of rattling was occurring from the other side of the door.

"You got this Harper." She breathed to herself. Then in a sudden swift move, she opened the door to attack the culprit. All she could outline was a shadow of a figure and approached them like a bull towards a red flag and held the lamp high as she came with a swinging attack. They grumbled dodging the attack then caught the lamp tightly as she went for another swing. Harper struggled to get it out of their grasp and burst out. "Who are you!!!" The person stopped her struggling as they held it still.

"Harper, Harper. Its me!" They whispered approaching closer. Harper scrunched her eyes as their face came into view. Her eyes opened in amazement as she dropped the lamp onto the floor however it did not go as planned as it landed on the person's foot instead or rather James'.

"Ow. " He whimpered. "You were going to hit me with a lamp?" He continued to grumble as he hopped on one foot. Harper gasped holding her hands to her mouth as she screamed in a whisper. "I didn't expect you to be climbing through my window. What are you even doing here?" James stopped grunting as he placed his foot slowly down quickly placing his finger against her lips.

Then as planned, Dani was on the other side of the door. "Harper? You okay? Sounds like a war in there?" James jerked his chin at Harper. Turning slowly she yelled back. "Yeah, I'm fine. Dropped a book on my foot." Trying to sound as believable as possible.

Dani snorted. "Well hurry up, you're missing the best part." Harper bit her lip looking back to James as she shrugged her shoulders not knowing what to say in return. He only encouraged her more by jerking his chin once more.

"Erm. Dani, I might go to bed now. I don't feel well. You go watch it with Duke." She lied, then coughed falsely at the end. Dani sighed on the other side of the door. "Alright, leave me with grumpy why don't you?" Harper apologised once more before she listened intently until Dani was out of zone, that she turned to James poking his chest demanding to know what the hell he was doing here.

James placed his hands up in surrender. "Hey! I'm here aren't I?" Harper pursed her lips placing both hands on her hips. "Who sneaks into someone bedroom? What, you were just going to wait in here till I came back?" James rolled his eyes before pulling her close towards him and distracting her lips as he placed his own against hers. All the questions she had for him disappeared as he wrapped his arms around her. It didn't last long as he pulled away, wiping his lips with his thumb and smirked as Harper just stood there still in a daze.

"Can't I just come because I wanted to see you?" He admitted. Harper blinked several times as she steadied herself on the side of her chest of draws. "Try the front door next time." James chuckled to himself before clasping her hand as he pulled her over to bed, he sat down pulling her down onto his lap. Harper blushed as he embraced her into his arms.

"I thought you would have enjoyed my surprise visit." He said, still grinning like that of teenager boy. Harper blushed again remembering the last time he made a surprise visit and that was here.

"Besides, I thought we could...just chill." He coughed, trying to disguise the tint of red in his own cheeks. This was hard for anyone to understand, the struggle he had to go through with that dam book. Those were the guidelines though. Harper cocked her eyebrow looking into his brown eyes. "Chill? I didn't think you were a one to just chill." She confessed. James shrugged his shoulders. "Fancy that, ah?" Harper rolled her eyes smirking to herself. James wetted his bottom lip as Harper got up and only moved up to the top of the bed. He patted the spare space near him, she hesitated for a second then approached him but before she did snapped. "Shoes!" James grumbled as he slipped his shoes off onto the floor. Harper then only sat back down with him with a smug smile on her lips. James was not used to this however he bit back on his tongue from the intruding thoughts he other part of him thought that found this cowardly.

James held his arms out and without hesitating this time, Harper lay back on his chest as he gently started playing with her hair. "Are you feeling alright?" She muttered against his shirt. James chuckled as he shook his head. "Yes! Will you just stop complaining!" Harper smiled to herself as she found herself relaxing against him.

By late midnight, James had stuck out by the window that she didn't even realise was wide open this morning when she left it. It was like he was a troublesome teenager escaping his girl's parents and he had returned twice again back to the window forgetting his shoes the first time and the second time, claiming he wanted a kiss. Was he actually changing she thought?

James soon after leaving Harper decided to go for a drink at the usual bar. It was still open when he got there and he ordered a whiskey gulping it back almost immediately or at least tried to. He banged the cup again on the counter trying to get the bartender's attention as he sighed to himself. Chilling? What was he thinking his other part of him thought; he should be relishing the fact he was a bachelor. His rubbed the back of his neck as he looked to the side of him watching as Taylor entered the bar taking the stool right next to him.

"Rough day?" She said as she passed a note over to the bartender. James cocked his eyebrow, his inability to keep his eyes from trailing upon the tight dress she was wearing. "So what's the story then?" She asked as she took a sip from her cocktail.

"I think I'm going a whole lot soft." He admitted as he held his finger up to the bartender to get another one. He didn't know why he was telling her, probably the alcohol speaking for him.

"The James Brewer becoming a softie. What finally realised you have a heart?" She laughed before taking another sip. James shook his head. "Oh you know me, the player who breaks thousands of heart. I mean...look at you...I-I didn't really help you out. Now you're only breaking hearts in return." Taylor nodded to that holding her glass up as she brought it to him. "Toast?"

James smirked to himself clinging his whiskey glass against hers.

The rest of the night, James was in no state of being sober anymore and took shares in drinking with Taylor. Her face scrunched up in disgust just like a sweet wrapper as she knocked back a shot. James laughed at her as he had no problem at all taking another one until the scrutiny of the bartender every now so, telling them their presence was not welcome being they were the only ones there.

"Come on, I think its past your bedtime." James joked as he got up nearly slipping from his grip upon the counter. Taylor smirked saluting towards the bartender as she got up nearly stumbling herself. James held out his arm and she gladly held his as they walked out into the alleyway laughing as they struggled to remain still.

"Fancy coming back?" She asked. James nodded. "Sure, I'll get us a taxi."

As the taxi pulled up the curb, for once in James' life he had a bad gut feeling. Even through his drunk state he knew that he didn't want to go through with it. Taylor climbed in however instead of following in after he leaned upon the taxi roof for support as he shook his head. "I think I'm going to call it a night." Taylor shrugged her shoulders. "Doesn't bother me. I think I know the reason and you know too." She slurred pointing her finger at him.

James smirked. "Yeah, I finally have a heart. See you." Taylor giggled to herself. "Mind you I'd rather have you as a drinks buddy than casual one night stands. Ta-Ta." She slurred once again. James shut the door and banged on the roof to hint to the driver he would only be taking one passenger tonight. James held his hands in his pockets as he smirked to himself, for once in his life he had made a good move.

Calling Samuels on his phone he returned back to his penthouse this time he would be waking up in his own bed and not a stranger's.
