Chapter 30- It feels like I can't function
An mountain of tissues grew upwards from off the floor. Harper sobbed her heart out as Dani cradled her just like of that of a Mother would do for a young child.
"Its okay." Dani cooed. "He's not worth any tear. You hear me, Harper Daniels. Not worth it." She repeated over and over as she cuddled her friend more. That evening had not gone on as expected, when Harper left work she was distraught but still managed to keep on a brave face until Dani confronted her at home about why there was cereal everywhere upon the floor and the great escape she made this morning. Harper had no choice but to tell the truth but not entirely, missing deliberately the part about Duke, she still couldn't understand why she was protecting him but she just did. So bundled up in with a box of tissues, she blew on occasion as she told Dani everything from the first kiss till how she played as his fake girlfriend and how he just suddenly turned on her, gave her the cold shoulder. Dani was of course very surprised but now all cared about was making sure her friend would be alright.
Harper blew on a another tissue then throwing it carelessly onto the floor. "I-I-I...thought, h-he...liked me?" She sighed, wiping her nose. "I mean who am I kidding, he is embarrassed to be around me. I know it, why blame him? I am his PA, I don't have my arse on a billionaire line unlike probably all the models he's dated. I'm not rich. I was probably so easy for him to wrap me around his little finger."
Dani narrowed her eyes. "Don't you dare think you are a embarrassment. And none of this is your fault, men like that, are pigs. They are too greedy, expect women to fall for them. You've took a stand though Harper, you got out of it before it could get any further. Tomorrow, you'll put a strong face and show him that he made a mistake, he had no right to lead you on, then treat you like that as if none of that mattered. They're pigs, Harper."
Harper giggled, tears falling down her cheek again as she pulled Dani into a another hug. "Thank you. Dani. I know you always make me feel better." Dani rolled her eyes playfully. "Woman, I'm just good at what I do." She sighed resting her head on her hand. "You sure you are gonna be okay?" Harper nodded. "Yes, I'm stupid for even crying, its not like we were in any relationship. I just need to be strong, face him and get on with my life." Dani nodded. "Good, now about Duke, are you sure nothing happened this morning?"
Harper bit her lip before muttering. "No, we had a bit of a disagreement. Its fine. Everything is." She pulled a false smile before getting up. "I'm gonna take a shower. Then go bed." Dani nodded, sighing as she watched her friend stumble off. She felt bad for her, if she had the power to do so, she would knock that man off his feet for sure. No one treated her friend like this and got away with it but that wouldn't be fair on Harper's job. There was a slight suspicion that something happened with Duke, like at the nightclub. She was drunk, didn't realise till the next day that she allowed Harper to take off with her boss, should have stopped her from going, maybe all of this would have not happened. Dani didn't want to tell Harper again but she had another letter again today, it was the same sort of cheesy line. It was worrying her, she might be putting on a laugh in front of Harper, but something didn't feel right. Though all of that would have to wait, she didn't want to add more pressure on Harper who was in bundles about her boss.
Harper had a nightmare.
It was a blurry vision, in her dream she woke to the beautiful blue sky, no clouds whatsoever. Near her she heard laughing, the familiar sound startling her as she sat up. In her surroundings she was in meadow, colourful rows reaching far in the distant. Her heart was beating fast as she heard her name.
"Harper." A voice called out. She looked up to see James, he was laughing as he held his hand out. Her own voice laughed back as she reached for his hand. As his hand clasped hers, he pulled her up pulling her along, flowers brushing against her skin as she jogged after. Everything seemed right, not until his hand slipped from hers, he was smiling jogging away, still looking back as she called out after him. Then everything went bright, he slipped away from her leaving her alone, until her eyes opened.
Harper woke up, sweat perched upon her forehead as her chest rose fast. Taking a breath she pulled back the duvet and climbed out rushing towards the bathroom. Taking occupancy in the bathroom, she rested her hands on the sink as she tried to control how out of breath she was. She ran the cold tap, splashing it against her heated face before daring a look into the mirror. Almost instantly she jumped back, as a image of his familiar grinning lips flashed behind her.
"Get a grip."She snapped to herself. Wiping her face with a towel, she rushed back towards her bedroom.
James sat at his desk tapping a pencil against the desk, the sound drumming into his ears as he stared blankly onto the ground. He didn't what to think, he didn't even eat last night even though Manny was persistent however she did get him to manage a slice of toast this morning. No words could describe how he was feeling, he didn't even manage a word when speaking to Samuels who drove him here this morning. It was like he couldn't function. What was wrong with him?
Even the slightest alert this morning that Katherine had somehow entered the building, didn't bother him. It was like he didn't care anymore. When she did however stroll through the door, plopping her bag onto the couch carelessly, he didn't move, didn't react. Not even stole a glance and kept staring to the floor.
"James?" She repeated again. He slowly looked up before looking back down again. She frowned tapping her shoe against the floor before coming closer. "James, are you not listening to me?" Her irritating voice was numbing his ears once again. His phone was beeping on the desk, the caller Samuels. Katherine sighed, grabbing his phone as he phone started ringing but immediately gasped looking at the wallpaper.
"Who is this?" She demanded. James got up, snatching the phone from her hands. He had forgot that his wallpaper was of Harper on the yacht when she had fell asleep in the soaking sunlight. James liked how adorable she looked, very selfish he added it to his wallpaper, now regretting the single look on Katherine's face. "Well?" She snapped. James rolled his face in disgust. "Get out! Before I call security who should have not let you in." She flipped her hair to the side as James rushed past her grabbing her flimsy bag and throwing it at her. "Go!" She pursed her lips walking towards the door just as Harper was standing outside. As soon as her eyes met the glamorous woman's before her, the energy she had had deflated. James had the face of a guilty man she noticed.
-"Hang on!" Katherine demanded as James pushed her towards the lifts, she tried turning around trying to get a closer look on Harper before she was given one last push into the lift. James sighed, before he dared to look over to Harper who looked just as startled as he expected her to be.
"Miss Daniels, I can assure...nothing happened in..."- He managed to say before she cut in. "Its none of my business, Sir. What's yours is yours." She looked back then to the floor, biting her lip at how she felt her hands shake in nerve. James shook his head coming closer as he approached her before she held her hands out. "Mr Brewer, you do not need to explain yourself." She tried a smile before picking up a pile of tidy stack of paper up. "I did check through these you asked me to. And you had a phone call from overseas with your other establishment, I was going to fetch you to tell you. You weren't answering...your intercom." She looked down, as she held out the pile of paper. James parted his lips looking at the paper before sighing inside as he took them off her. "Thank you, Miss Daniels. I'll go take that phone call, resume with what you were doing." He said, trying to hide back any hint of sadness. Harper nodded, she noticed how he didn't seem bothered, he walked off back to his office where she was left alone. She could admit how perfect that woman alongside him before looked, that was probably the women he went for. She was much good looking than herself, he thought he actually cared and was actually trying to explain himself but he had no intention to proceed to when he just took the papers and walked off. Harper sighed, walking back around to her desk as she began going through his schedule.
James placed the pile of paper out onto the desk, before resting both hands on the edge of the desk as he sighed. It was driving him crazy. He had never felt this up so tight about one woman before, why her? It was unfair to his temptation not to just kiss her lips again, hold her tight and claim her to him. He had shown weakness, allowed Katherine to see that picture, how stupid was he? He was acting like a lovesick teenager boy rather than an billionaire bachelor supposed to be enjoying the high life. Even sleeping with Taylor the night before didn't do anything, in the moment it did but after his conscience just felt more guilty, like it was wrong, like he was breaking a commitment to Harper. This was all for the best he thought, standing up as he adjusted his cuffs. He walked around to his desk and began his first phone call which first would be to Samuels to approve security of not allowing that disgraceful woman, Katherine enter this place again.
By lunch, Harper was in the canteen alone at a table as she played with her straw in her drink just turning it around between her fingers as she glanced outside. Harper jumped as she felt a presence tap her shoulder. Elliot was smiling as he sat down before her opening up the case to his sandwich.
"Hey, you okay?" He asked. Harper looked up smiling as she nodded. "Yeah, just enjoying the solitude." Elliot held his hands up. "Oh, sorry. Want me to go?" He smirked. Harper giggled, before looking over near the canteen bar. Her eyes instantly locked with James who was on the phone sliding through the crowd, his face went grim as he looked towards the man opposite her, his mouth still moving as he talked on the phone, before he entered a free vacant lift. Harper sighed inside before returning a smile to Elliot who was showing her photos on his phone of the rock climbing he took in the weekend before.
The afternoon was still awkward, James said nothing only the slightest word over intercom for grabbing coffee or going to run tasks for him. The job was feeling more of a punishment rather than her dream job she had always wanted or the time when she jumped for joy when she had got the letter saying she got in. Good memory that was she thought, nothing felt better than working in the financial department of a billionaire business, now she was a PA. She hated how this between them turned out, she couldn't understand why he hadn't fired her, surely a man with everything would be disgusted if his employee challenged him. When five' o clock came, she knocked on the door pushing her bag strap further up her arm as she waited for a response.
"Come in." She heard. She walked in, James wasn't at all at his desk, rather on the cream couch, his leg crossed over the other as he fumbled with his phone between his hands. He didn't look up so Harper went further in meeting his view.
"I'm going." She mumbled, biting her lip. James nodded, slowly his eyes only meeting her her bitten lip before he looked back down, it was harder to resist when she did that. "I'll...see you tomorrow." She said. James said nothing, only watched as she remained there for a second or two before moving towards the door. The shutting of the door startled him from his gaze and he raked his hand through his hair with frustration as he sat up.
"You f**king coward, James." He said to himself.
