The Meeting
The very next day at lunch, we walked to a painting near the lunchroom.
"This is him, The Grand Wizard himself."
It was just a painting of a man! I noticed the girls blushing and leaning on the wall smiling at it.
"Let's go eat."
We walked to get our lunch.
"So, is Miss. Cackle retrieving you or do you have to come to her?"
"She's retrieving me after she makes her big announcement in 3...2...1."
Just then, Grandma walked into the lunchroom.
"Witches, I have an announcement to make very quickly! Tomorrow is Halloween, you know what that means? The Grand Wizard himself will be coming!"
The girls cheered. What's the deal with them obsessing over him? Grandma walked to me.
"Hyacinth, please come with me. You will be fed afterwards"
"Yes Grandma."
Not very far from the lunchroom was a small conference room, long table, chairs, the whole meeting shebang. Grandma pointed the big chair at the far end.
"This is where The Grand Wizard sits."
"That looks like a throne fit for a king, geez!"
She chuckled.
"I sure love your sense of humor sometimes."
"So, where can I sit?"
"Anywhere you'd like but The Grand Wizard's chair."
We sat down. Grandma sat next to the big chair and I sat next to her. Miss. Spellbinder walked in.
"Am I a bit early?"
"No, you're right on time."
"What's Hyacinth doing here?"
"She's observing the meeting, as a punishment, I hope this meeting will teach her a lesson to respect her classmates and teachers. It's about what all we do to make sure these girls learn."
"Hyacinth, what's the matter? You're never like that towards me."
"That's because Miss. Spellbinder is a friendly teacher, unlike Miss. Hardbroom. she hates me and she's a grump!"
"Hyacinth," Grandma scolded.
"I'm sorry Grandma, I'm a respect me, I respect you kind of person. People who hate me like Miss. Hardbroom and Ethel Hallow and her friends. People who are good to me like Mildred Hubble and Maud Warlock are my best friends."
Then, Miss. Hardbroom walked in, she gave me a judgey look.
"What is she doing here!?"
"You see what I mean?" I asked Grandma and Miss. Spellbinder.
They chose to ignore me.
"Hyacinth is here to observe this meeting. Punishment for the other day."
"Hmm," Miss. Hardbroom nodded.
"Don't worry Miss. Hardbroom, I'll be on my best behavior," I said as low key sarcastic as possible.
"I sure hope so."
"You'll forget I'm even here."
"Big Daddy Wiz should be here any moment now."
"Big Daddy Wiz, that's your little nickname for this Grand Wizard man?"
Then, a man walked in, he wore a suit with a cloak, he had curly black hair and the most beautiful green eyes I have ever seen. Holy moly, the girls were right. What a hunk! We stood up to greet him.
"Grand Wizard, welcome!" Grandma said.
"Good to be here like always."
He kissed her hand.
He had a smooth deep voice kinda like Clint Eastwood but sexier and British.
"Miss. Hardbroom, pleased to see you again."
He kissed her hand. I noticed a slight blush.
"Miss. Spellbinder, good to see you!"
He kissed her hand. He noticed me. I tried to be as innocent as possible.
"Sir, I would like you to meet my granddaughter, Hyacinth Cackle. She is also a student here."
He walked to me.
"Pleased to meet you Hyacinth."
He kissed my hand. Oh lord. I could feel myself getting flustered.
"Likewise sir."
"Miss. Cackle, what is a student doing in this meeting, I do not mean to sound rude?"
"She is here to observe, it's a punishment. She needs to learn about what we do to help the student strive for success."
"Hmm," he frowned.
"Let's get on with this meeting shall we?"
We sat down.
"First things first, Grand Wizard, the cat ceremony tomorrow morning first thing, the first years will receive a black cat of their very own. They will be perched on their brooms during their performance that very night for you."
"Hmm, that would be a blast."
"But, there's a high chance children like Hyacinth Cackle and Mildred Hubble will not be participating due to their poor learning behavior," Miss. Hardbroom said.
"I'm sitting right here," I said.
"Good."
"Settle down please," Grandma said.
"Before this meeting goes any further. I would like to talk about and with Hyacinth."
"Yes Grand Wizard."
"Alright, I do see how she and Miss. Hardbroom treat each other is why she's here with us. So, Miss. Hardbroom, do you have anything positive to say about this young witch?"
"Well Grand Wizard I...well..."
"Can't think of anything nice to say huh? it's what I thought," I nodded.
I was genuinely sad.
"Oh Hyacinth, darling, we really care for our students."
"I do have something nice to say. Yes she's rebellious but she's more intelligent than the rest of the girls, I will tell you that."
"Well, she was born to a half wizard father and a full non magic mother. Don't let her genetics fool you."
The Grand Wizard chuckled. I actually felt good. I guess they really care. I learned my lesson!
"Grandma, I learned my lesson."
"Oh, do you now?"
"Yes ma'am."
"I bet she's trying to get out of it," Miss. Hardbroom said.
I gave her a sad and angry look.
"Oh you just had to-"
I stopped myself.
"Hyacinth?"
"Yes Grand Wizard?"
"You seem to have some anger issues. We could go somewhere private and talk."
"You are such a kind man Grand Wizard," Grandma said.
"I don't mean any disrespect Grand Wizard, I'm sorry, I really don't need your help. All I want is to go home and my step mother out of my life. Grand Wizard, Grandma, Miss. Hardbroom, Miss. Spellbinder, I apologise in advance for what I am about to say."
"Go on."
I stood up.
"I am here because me and my step mother hate each other, since day one of the remarriage. I am here because he would rather choose her over his own child. I don't wanna be here, but the headmistress is my grandmother, my closest relative. In school, she treats me like all the other students. Grandma, they know you're my grandmother ok, it breaks my heart not being allowed call you Grandma no matter where we are. Miss. Hardbroom, don't ever compare me to anyone, especially Mildred, she tries to learn, she really does! Don't ever assume every mishap is her doing! Ethel Hallow is the source of my anger here, the way she treats me and my best friends, thinking she's superior to me. I smacked her because she had it coming to her, I know it's not tolerated but I promise to do better. I promise to be nicer to everybody but if Ethel makes me angry, I will be angry. I guess her and me both can't help ourselves. I will do my best here. I maybe a bad student but I have feelings!"
I sighed.
"That's all. May I go Grandma?"
"Yes you may."
I ran out of the room about to cry.
