Mismatch

Roxy slouched lower, messing up her long, dark brown hair in the seat of her mom's new, bubble shaped car, which she hated. Hated.

Really, she hated anything to do with this horrible move. They were moving to Orendia, which sounded like the name of a cafe. Plus, Orendia was in a whole different kingdom, Solaria. Much too sunny for Roxy's liking. Her pale, prone-to-sunburn skin agreed. Honestly, could her mom's new job with SolarTech Inc. at least be in the same kingdom they used to live in? She had actually liked Lunaria, although she prided herself on being the most pessimistic person she had ever met in her whole twelve years of living.

They had barely crossed the border into Solaria when she realized how cold it really was in Lunaria. She was already baking hot, even with the sophisticated air conditioning system in her mom's latest model Bubble Car, courtesy of SolarTech, Inc.. When they lived in Lunaria, they drove an old sedan. Another reason why her mom thought this move was epic.

She yawned widely, closing her big hazel eyes, stretching her long arms above her head, and let the fleeting bit of cool shade provided by a tall building wash over her. Maybe, if she closed her eyes, this whole horrible move would turn out to be just a dream.

Roxy despised this feeling, and the worst part was, she had done this almost ten times. What feeling?

Being the new kid. To make matters worse, she was moving in the middle of the school year. Even without that added pressure, going to a new school was always the same: The stomach-turning jitters as she walked through the doors, the stares from other kids, the annoying kids who were more concerned about Roxy's life than she herself was. It never changed. She was sick of all the uniforms she had to wear, too. You would be surprised at how dorky school uniforms could get.

Her mom's car pulled up by Orendia Middle School. She was about to start her first day at OMS. As the fleeting yet decisive thought of opening the door crossed her mind, JustImagine technology kicked in, opening the door for her. She rolled her eyes, wondering what technology would do next. She stepped out, the door closing seamlessly behind her.

As Roxy walked up to the front steps of her imposing new school, she rubbed her sweaty palms on her jeans. Showing up to class a nervous wreck was not an option. It would ruin her whole "I don't care" image. She couldn't let that happen, now could she?

She walked through the ominous front doors of OMS, following the ever-thickening stream of students pushing their way through. She burst through the doors, marvelling at the grandiose interior for a second before being swept away by the crowd. She checked a digital map to see where the office was.

As she was checking, someone bumped into her. A small "oof" escaped from her mouth as she fell to the floor. A hand helped her up. She was about to scream at whoever knocked her over, stopping short when she saw the girl who was helping her up. She was the polar opposite of Roxy. She had pink Converse, white jeans, a blue shirt with a unicorn on it, and blonde hair dip-dyed rainbow. It would have looked childish on anyone else, but she somehow made it work.

"Oh my gosh!" her overly cheerful voice said, "I am sooo sorry! I should really watch my clumsiness! It's a problem, you know. My mom has told me a billion times to look where I'm going more carefully, but I guess none of that talk gets through to me, ya know what I mean?"

Roxy stared incredulously at the girl, nervously twisting her gray hoodie in her hands. Who could actually be that cheerful? It was kind of... scary.

"Oh, silly me!" the girl giggled, "I'm Marisol, but all my friends call me Mari! What's your name?"

"Roxy," She said, maintaining a cold façade that masked a million questions.

"Well, Roxy," Marisol said happily, "I can just tell we're going to be best friends!"

"Not happening,'' Roxy was resolute.

Roxy briskly walked away, completely ignoring Marisol's excited chatter. Somewhere along the way, she lost that annoying girl in the crowd. Thank god, Roxy thought. My ears would start bleeding if I had to listen to her any longer.

She collected her schedule from the office and walked to her homeroom, that Mr. Leto presided over. She slid into an open seat, hopefully unnoticed. A familiar voice piped up next to her. Roxy turned around and sighed. It was that overly cheerful girl from before. Marisol.

Mr. Leto started talking. He was a tall person, with piercing blue eyes and slick black hair tied in a ponytail. He gave the usual "follow the rules, don't be mean" teacher talk. Halfway through, Marisol whispered, "Hey, Mr. Leto is great," Roxy grunted and ignored her. Marisol frowned, evidently quite hurt. Roxy felt a pang of guilt, because even though she was overly pessimistic, she never meant to make anyone unhappy. She leaned over to Marisol and whispered, "Hey, I'm sorry if I was rude. First day jitters, ya know what I mean?"

"Oh, no that's totally fine!" Marisol replied chirpily, regaining her positivity, "No problem at all!"

The bell rung, signaling the end of third period. She raced to her locker to put her books away, and walked over to the cafeteria. She surveyed the enormous cafeteria, looking for an empty table. As she looked, someone tapped her on the shoulder. She turned around and was met with the smiling face of Marisol. "Roxy! Hi! My friends and I are sitting over there! Wanna join us?"

Roxy's instinct would be to decline, but she decided to accept anyways. Besides, what was the harm in sitting at someone's table? Before she could change her mind, she walked over to the table. She sat down cautiously, with an odd mix of determination and anxiety. Marisol's friends were pleasant, and for a moment, she wondered if she could be friends with them.

She silently laughed that thought away. As she discarded her leftover lunch scraps and walked to her next class, she giggled quietly. Friends? she thought, Wow, I can't believe I thought that. Chuckling internally, she headed to Math.

Marisol was waiting right outside the door when she walked out of Math. Surprisingly, she wasn't even annoyed by the fact that Marisol was low-key stalking her. In fact, it almost flattered her to know she mattered to someone else so much. As she walked out of Math, she spotted Marisol and started chatting with her. She and Marisol happened to have the same Study Hall time, and chatted all through it, not actually studying. Marisol asked Roxy tons of questions about her move, and Roxy answered them all begrudgingly. Roxy smiled for the first time in ages.

As Roxy was heading to her house, Marisol tapped her on the shoulder.

"What?" asked Roxy. "Oh, I was wondering if you could come over on Friday," replied Marisol. Roxy felt some strange emotion inside her that she was unable to define. Could it be... friendship? Maybe this move wasn't so bad after all. Grinning, she responded, "Sure, I'm free,".

As months passed, Roxy and Marisol grew closer. Roxy had even started calling her Mari, after Mari instisted multiple times. Roxy's attitude had taken a turn for the better, and other people noticed this. Mari had helped her become a better person. After all, on Roxy's first day at her new school, it was Mari's positivity that changed her outlook on moving, and that helped her realize starting afresh wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Mari had even helped Roxy lose her pessimism. Well, most of it. She would never lose her sarcasm. That's what made Roxy, well, Roxy.

As the last month of school approached, Mari began acting strange. She was not her usual sunny self and even asked a few odd questions ... about light. Roxy could tell that something was bothering her. "Hey, Roxy," asked Mari, "Is it possible to rig up a constantly-shining light?". Something clicked in Roxy's brain. Mari had been asking weird questions about light for quite some time now, and everyone knew that Lunaria was the darkest and least tech-savvy kingdom. "By any chance, are you moving to -", Roxy asked as Mari cut her off. "Lunaria. Yeah. I'm moving at the end of the month".

Roxy knew she should've been mad, but she couldn't. After all she'd been through, her best friend moving was just another obstacle. So Roxy just took Mari's hand in hers, gripping tightly. She took in every little detail about Mari, and whispered, "Well, if you are, then I'm glad we've been together while it lasted."

Mari's eyes teared up, as she whispered, "Best friends?" Roxy nodded, grinning from ear to ear, "Forever".
