Chapter 5

Blake got home straight after track to get changed to meet Jughead.

"How'd it go?" Her dad asked as she walked in.

"Great, I'm on the team again." She smiled.

"Well done, Sweetie." Her dad commended.

"Thanks, dad. I'm gonna get ready, I'm meeting Jughead at Pop's." She went to go upstairs.

"Are you and Jughead, you know..."

"Dating. Dad, we are dating." She told him.

"Okay just be careful."

"I know, we've had this conversation before remember? I need to get ready." She ran upstairs before the conversation could get any more awkward. She hopped in the shower and got changed. She was drying her hair when Archie knocked on the door frame.

"Hey." He said.

"Hey."

"Can I ask you something?" He enquired.

"Shoot." She smiled.

"The coach offered me a place on the varsity team." Archie started as he walked over and sat on her bed.

"Arch, that's amazing!" She exclaimed.

"That's not it all." He sighed. "He offered me Jason's number, and I don't think I can live up to those expectations. I want to pursue my music but I also want to play football. I guess, I'm saying, I don't know what to do, Bee."

"You should do what you want, not what anyone else wants of you. You can play football and pursue your music." She smiled. "And it doesn't matter if you don't think you can live up to Jason, just because you've got the same hair colour doesn't mean that you are him. You can only be your own person." She assured him.

"Thanks, Bee. I'm gonna go practice. You make the team?" He queried.

"Yep."

"Well done. You and Jughead going to the dance?" He seemed nervous about something.

Blake laughed. "You think you could get either of us there tonight. No, we're meeting at Pop's. You going?"

"Yeah, with Betty and Veronica." He muttered.

"Just be a nice gentleman and everything will be fine. Now I do have to get ready." She smiled. He returned the smile and left. She finished getting ready and walked downstairs to hear Archie and her dad on the front porch.

"I, um I got a call from your coach today. He's under the impression that you can't play varsity football because I'm making you work for me. Which is odd, because you made it seem like you couldn't work for me because you were playing football. So, my first question is Who are you lying to? Me or your coach?" Their dad started. Blake grabbed her converse but didn't want to walk out while they were in the middle of something.

"Neither." Archie replied but Blake knew their dad had pinned him in a corner. He sighed. "Both."

Their dad sighed.

"I want to study music, I want to write music." Archie tried.

"Football takes you to college. College takes you to business school. Business school..."

Archie cut him off. "Takes me back here. To work for you in Riverdale."

"Not for me, with me. And eventually for yourself, son. The company would be yours." Their dad told him.

"No disrespect, Dad, but I don't want it." Archie said

"Three months ago, you did." Their dad sounded hurt. "What happened?"

"I've changed. Everything's changed. This summer..." Archie trailed off.

"This summer what?" Their dad sighed "That's it? We don't talk anymore?"

"Dad." Archie started but their dad stopped him.

"I would never force you to play football. Same way I never forced your sister to take track. I don't care if you play football. And you don't have to work with me or for me, ever again. But some advice, man-to-man? These decisions that you're making now, son, they have consequences. They go on to form who you are and who you'll become. Whatever you decide, be confident enough in it that you don't have to lie." Their dad walked through the door leaving Archie on the porch.

"That seemed like an intense conversation." Blake commented. "I'm going to meet Jughead."

"Have fun." Their dad said before walking off.

She walked out and found Archie sat with his head in his hands and his guitar at his feet. "You good?"

"He seems pretty disappointed this time." Archie sighed.

"He'll come round eventually." She said ruffling his ginger locks.

"Yeah I know." He murmured.

"Have fun at the dance." She smiled as she walked off.

Jughead was already at Pop's when she walked in. He was sat in their usual booth with his laptop out. His fingers danced across the keyboard and she guessed she was adding the day's developments to his novel about Jason.

"Hey." She walked over and kissed him briefly on the lips before sitting across from him.

"Hey." He looked up briefly before going back to typing. "How'd track go?"

"Great. I'm on the team." She smiled.

He smiled. "Well done. I'm almost finished." He assured her.

The waitress came over and she ordered their usual burgers and milkshakes. He was too engrossed in his typing to even notice the waitress and Blake lips tugged upwards as she got an idea. She carefully reached over and plucked his beanie off his head and put it on her own. He didn't even notice and just carried on typing. He finished the bit he was typing and closed his laptop and moved it out of the way. He looked at her and his face became etched with confusion. His fingers went into his black hair and ran straight through it.

"Hey. That's not fair." He smiled looking at the hat on her head.

"I think it was perfectly fair." She laughed as the waitress walked over with their order.

Blake started eating as Jughead just glared at her. "Can I have it back please?" he whined.

"Nope." She popped the P and gave him a smile. "I think it looks better on me."

Jughead smirked and started eating. "That might be true but I still feel exposed without it."

"Fine." She smiled and stuck it back over his raven locks. She curled to the normal piece of hair out of the hat and onto his forehead. "There you go." He just smiled at her.

They finished eating while talking and joking about random stuff. After they had finished, Jughead grabbed his laptop and slide into the side of the booth next to her.

"You want to read what I've got so far?" He asked with a slight shake in his voice. Her opinion mattered more than anyone's and not just because she had been friends with Jason.

"If you want me to." She said, giving him the chance to back out. But, he just loaded up the word document and slide the laptop in front of her.

He wrapped an arm around her waist and watched to gauge her reaction as she read each line. His heart was in his throat as she neared the end. She finished reading and turned to face him. She pulled his head down to hers and captured his lips. The hand around her waist pulled her closer and his other hand slipped up to the side of her face. When she pulled back she left her forehead against his, caught her breath and got her emotions under control. She pulled back and met his nervous blue-green eyes with her dark ones. Her hands were still on the side of his face.

"It's amazing." She whispered with a smile.

"You think so?" He said matching her smile.

She nodded and he kissed her again. They pulled back and Blake notice the time. "I need to get home. The dance is about to finish and I promised my dad I wouldn't be back any later."

Jughead nodded. "I'm gonna stay a little longer and finish some stuff."

She kissed him lightly and left Pop's. He watched her go with a smile on his face.
