Chapter 25

Blake and Betty met in the Blue and Gold office early the next morning. Neither wanted to talk about the night before but both knew they had little choice.

"Bee, I feel like I don't even know who my mom and dad are anymore." Betty muttered as she met the brunette's eyes.

"Betty, if your parents lied about Jason and Polly, there's probably more that they lied about." Blake said slowly as she stood and walked over to their murder board.

"What do you mean?" Betty stood and faced her.

Blake sighed. "Your dad said he would do anything to protect Polly. So, the next logical question is... How far would he go to protect her?"

"Blake," Betty walked towards the board as Blake started writing on a card. "whoever broke into Sheriff Keller's house and stole all his evidence wasn't at the drive-in." Betty paused to steady herself before her next statement. "My Dad wasn't at the drive-in."

Blake looked directly at her friend as she handed her the yellow card. Betty took the card and looked at it before pinning it under Jason's photo. The two words could change everything: The Coopers.

"We need to talk to Polly." Blake said as they stood and looked at the board.

"Fear. It's the most basic, the most human emotion. As kids, we're afraid of everything. The dark. The boogeyman under the bed. And we pray for morning. For the monsters to go away. Though they never do. Not really. Just ask Jason Blossom."

Betty invited Jughead and Blake over for breakfast. Neither of them were particularly enthusiastic about the idea. Betty's one argument was that Jughead could distract her mum while her and Blake tried to find out where Polly was.

So, they found themselves sat opposite one another at the Cooper's dining room table. Betty and Alice were across from each other at the heads of the table.

"So, Jughead." Alice started and Jughead froze. "I suppose we have you to thank for Betty's ongoing obsession with this Jason Blossom ghoulishness?"

Jughead glanced at Blake for help but Betty was quick to cut in. "Actually, Mom, I was the one who asked Jughead and Blake to help me write it for the Blue and Gold." Betty defended.

"Relax, Betty. I'm just making conversation." Alice smiled.

Blake kicked Jughead's shin under the table. "Do you guys have a bathroom I could use?" Time to put their plan into action.

"Sure, I'll show you." Betty offered for the sole purpose that she knew her mother would interject.

Which Alice quickly did. "No, no. I'll show him." Alice stood. "Follow me Jughead."

As soon as they were out of the room Betty shot over to her mum's bag. She quickly pulled out her address book and held it open as Blake proceeded to take photos. They both quickly resumed their places before the other two came back in.

"Another fun fact about fear. Sometimes it grows up with you. Or it curls up inside of you, tightens around your guts."

Blake found herself sat in the school's theatre hall with Veronica and the Pussycat's watching the auditions for the variety show. She was only there on Archie's request as her brother seemed to believe he should give it a shot this year. And, considering that Kevin was the judge, he probably had a good chance.

"Archie Andrews?" Kevin called as Archie quickly made his way on stage.

"Each fall, Riverdale High hosts a Variety Show. But this event is no mere student frolic."

"And what will you be auditioning with?" Kevin inquired.

"Uh, an original song that I wrote called I'll Try." Archie stammered.

"Try harder!" Reggie suddenly called from where he was sat with the other jocks. "Maybe try not sucking so much." Blake turned around and shot daggers at him, which, quickly shut him up.

"Take your time, Archie. Though we do have people waiting." Kevin pushed as Archie froze up.

"Oh, my God, what's happening?" Veronica worried as he started to shake.

"He's choking." Josie said.

"Archie? Clock's ticking." Kevin reminded.

"Excuse me. Sorry, I gotta go." Archie quickly stammered before walking off stage.

Blake stood up and walked over to the jocks. "What the hell is your problem?" When she didn't get a reply, she threw her hands up and walked out. "Assholes."
