Chapter 17
Blake and Jughead had gone to the Taste of Riverdale to see if they could find Dilton Doiley. They were hidden up on the balcony, crouched down, peering over the edge. Riverdale's residents were being Riverdale's residents as Penelope Blossom slapped Alice Cooper. The pussycats started to perform and all of a sudden Archie was creeping up the stairs and crouched near the pair on Blake's right. Blake had no idea why he had snuck out again considering he did get caught and subsequently got into an argument with their dad.
"Are you sure it was worth sneaking out for some locally-sourced Munster?" Jughead queried with raised eyebrows.
"I helped write that song, man." Archie said and Blake's smile grew.
"Not bad." Jughead commented.
"Which in Jughead terms means its amazing." Blake told Archie with a smile. Jughead chuckled from where he was crouched to her left. His eyes were drawn to the figure of Dilton Doiley leaving to the room. He nudged Blake who caught his message.
"We'd love to stay, but we got to shake down an evil Adventure Scout. See you." Jughead said as he and Blake got up and left. Blake smiled on more time at Archie as they left. They were careful to sneak past Fred without been seen. Neither of them wanted to be pulled into a conversation at this moment.
"Hello, Dilton." Jughead said as the pair descended the stairs to where Doiley was stood at the bottom. "We talked to one of your Scouts. We know you fired the gun. Which makes you both a liar, and a public menace." Jughead stayed a few stairs above Doiley to emphasis the height difference.
"So, what if I did?" Doiley's voice shook as he looked up at the pair who were clad in their usual dark attire. "I was doing the Adventure Scouts a favour. Somebody has to teach them how to stand their ground. The way this town is going..."
"Save it for your statement." Blake cut him off. "Which you can make to Sheriff Keller, or to us."
"I suggest the latter." Jughead advised. "Blue and Gold offices. Tomorrow." He and Blake walked out leaving the scout watching them with a worried expression.

The next day at school Blake discovered Betty and Veronica had found Chuck's playbook, dictating all of the awful things he and the football team had done. Betty had published it in the Blue and Gold and now the whole school was talking about it.
"Good and evil. Light and dark. Betty and Veronica. Two sides of the same Janus coin. Given Betty's article, Weatherbee needed a sacrificial lamb. Needed to make an example of someone. So, after Hermione Lodge negotiated a lesser sentence for our two avenging angels, Coach Clayton, to save his job, to save the school's reputation, was forced to cut his own beloved son, and his goon squad, from the team. An action that, though none of us knew it at the time, would have terrible consequences in the weeks to come.
"But one thing was certain, Betty and Veronica, now B&V, and maybe forever, had been forged. They walked through the fire, and survived. We crave absolutes. They comfort us, but life is infinitely more complex than that."
Blake and Jughead told Betty about their recent detecting work and their findings. She came along as Dilton Doiley sat in a chair at the Blue and Gold and looked at the three people in front of him. Betty stood behind the desk as Jughead and Blake perched on the front of it.
"If you publish a story saying I fired that gun, my life will be ruined. I'll be banished from the Adventure Scouts, and charged with a misdemeanour." Doiley pleaded. "So, what if I have a better story?" He said. The three journalists shared a look and raised their eyebrows at Doiley to continue. "If I tell you what I know, promise me the gunshot stays between us."
"You have our word. As journalists." Betty said walking around the desk and sitting on it next to Blake.
"I saw something at Sweetwater River. Something nobody else saw. Ms. Grundy's car. By the river's edge. She was there." Doiley's words caused both Jughead and Blake to freeze on the spot. Blake gripped Jughead's hand as both of them tried to figure out what to do. Betty didn't notice their change in demeanour and neither of them had ever been gladder.
"Despite all of our recent troubles, I would've done anything to protect Archie. But Dilton Doiley had just opened Pandora's box, and now, there was nothing I, Blake, or anyone, could do to save him."
