Chapter 10
Archie went to pick up food from Pop's and when he got home Jughead was sat on the front step waiting for him with an uninviting look on his face.
"Jug. What's up? You here for Blake?" Archie asked as he glanced around.
Jughead shook his head and stood up. "What's up is I saw you, Archie. In the music room. With Ms. Grundy."
"Keep your voice down, my dad's inside." Archie warned taking few steps towards Jughead.
"I'm trying to help you, dude." Jughead assured him. "I'm trying to be your friend here. Even though we're not anymore. How long? You and Grundy? 'Cause Blake seemed pretty in the dark."
"Since the summer." Archie muttered. "You talked to Blake?"
"As soon as I found out." Jughead said.
"I like her." Archie said timidly.
Jughead just scoffed. "So, I'm guessing she's the reason you've been acting weird since summer?
"One of them."
""One of them." There's more?" Jughead said with disbelief.
"We were at Sweetwater River on July 4th. We heard a gunshot. The gunshot." Archie looked at his shoes.
"Dude, you have to tell somebody." Jughead advised.
"I can't. Neither can you or Blake. If people find out about Grundy..." Archie tried.
"A kid is dead, Archie! One of your sister's best friends!" Jughead exclaimed. "And you're worried about some... Some cougar?"
"Don't call her that." Archie took a step towards Jughead. "Okay, she's not like that, she cares about me."
"Stab in the dark. I'm guessing she cares more about herself." Jughead's words stung. "She's the one who's telling you not to say anything, right?" When he didn't get a reply he almost laughed. "Look, I saw you guys. She's messing with you, man. And she's messing with your mind."
"What the hell do you know about it, Jughead? Or about me, even?" Archie had put up his defences and Jughead knew it would be hard to break through.
"Nothing." Jughead muttered. "But I used to know this guy once. Archie Andrews. He wasn't perfect but... He always tried to do the right thing, at least." Jughead went to walk away but Archie grabbed his jacket; hard.
"Jug. If you tell anyone about this..." Archie started.
"What? What are you gonna do? You'd have to explain it to Blake." Jughead reminded him and he let go of his shirt.
"Hey, Jug. Coming in? We got take-out from Pop's." Fred said as he and Blake walked out of the front door after hearing voices. Blake looked from her boyfriend to her brother and could tell something was wrong.
"He was just leaving." Archie said venomously. Jughead walked away and Blake pulled on her converse.
"Shove mine in the oven, I'll be back in a bit." She told her dad as she pushed past Archie after Jughead.
"Jug!" She called but he kept walking. "Jughead Jones the third you better stop walking right now!" She called and he came to a halt until she reached him, then carried on. "You want to tell me what that was about?" She questioned as she pulled her thin shirt closer to her as she shook slightly in the night air.
Jughead sighed and pulled of his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders. She tried to protest but he just sent her a look. "Your brother is an idiot." He muttered and stopped as they reached the end of the street.
"You're gonna have to be more specific." She smiled.
"He won't go to anyone about July Fourth." Jughead said as he took her hand and fiddled with her fingers.
"He will." She said clasping his nervous hands in her own.
"How do you know?" He queried as he lifted his gaze from their hands.
"Because he may be an idiot but he is a good guy and will eventually do the right thing." She assured him and he just nodded. "They'll finish Jason's autopsy tomorrow." She suddenly shared and looked at her hands.
He used on of his hands to lift her chin to face him. "Everything will be fine."
"I wish I could believe that." She murmured as she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his torso. He wrapped her arms around her back and they just stood there, on the end of the road, just enjoying each other's presence. She stood on her tiptoes and placed a short kiss to his lips. "See you tomorrow." She said handing him his jacket back.
"Bye." He whispered as she turned and walked back to her house. He watched her go and tried to believe his own words. Little did they know; everything was about to change.
