❝ you are a weapon, and
weapons don't weep. ❞

MOSCOW, 1963

AN ear-piercing scream echoed across the entire fortress, being loud enough to snap Anastasia awake from her sleep. The noise enthralled the gaunt woman, causing her to jump from her bed and hurry to the barred door.

The shrill noise seemed to gain louder before two guards were dragging another man down the hall.

It was the asset...The Winter Soldier, she noticed immediately, craning her neck to watch the commotion.

His lengthened hair was slightly matted and stuck to his face due to sweat.

It seemed like a struggle to drag him, as he resisted and pulled with all the muscle he had.

When they went to pass her cell, his eyes caught hers, causing him to do a double-take. His face seemed to light up beneath his stress. "Anastasia!"

His outburst made her blink in surprise. Her head jutted back, the supposed name catching her off guard.

Is that my name? No—it's not...why would he...?

"Anastasia—baby—it's me!" He cried out once again, planting his feet on the ground to gain more traction. His feet caught, making all three halt. The guards grunted again, trying to pull on him. "It's Bucky! I-It's James!"

"Prep him! He's remembering again!" The guard closest to Anatasia shouted down the corridor, gritting his teeth. She knew her cell was only a few doors down from the wiping room.

"Run, Ana! Get out of here!" Tears glossed over Bucky's eyes, using his empty strength to lean towards her.

Her inquisitiveness got the better of her, making her lean her head towards him as well. As he nodded at her encouragingly, a few tears slid down his cheeks.

Bucky's eyes widened when Anastasia stared back at her, emotionless. Anastasia's eyes were round with question, but she didn't voice or give a reaction to indicate she knew him.

"Anastasia..?"

The guards seemed to finally knock his feet away, making his body drag. He screamed again, seeming to cause a foreign feeling bloom in her chest. Like guilt...or pity?

They travelled further down the hallway. "PLEASE, NO!"

Her eyes followed after the three before she slowly stepped back. Eyebrows furrowing, she assumed their last mission set him off.

An assassination of some man named John F Kennedy. Whoever that was...

Taking a deep sigh, she slowly stepped to her bed and lowered down. She was in a stupor, not knowing how or what to feel in the moment.

There was another assignment she and the asset were supposed to complete tomorrow before they were getting moved to another base in Siberia.

Rolling onto her back and staring up at the cracked ceiling, it wasn't much longer till she heard faint screams of the Soldier getting reset. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut, getting another peculiar sensation in her heart, causing her to feel anxious.

She turned on her side, with her back towards the room. Curling up, she tried to fall asleep.

SIBERIA, 1991

ANASTASIA frowned deeper as the her and the Soldier waited in the night. It was nearing midnight and the fall air was filled with tension. They both sat upon individual motorcycles, awaiting their targets.

They made no conversation.

"We have another mission for both of you," Vasily Karpov, their current instructor announced in Russian tongue once the asset was finished with his reset.

Anastasia was before him, still twitching from the electric shocks she was given. She stood beside him, who still sat in the cushioned chair.

Karpov held up a folder, opening it briefly. "Sanction and extract. No witnesses. One takes care of clearing out the threats, the other cleans up."

After shutting the buff folder, he tossed it down beside the red notebook. "You both leave tonight in two hours. Get ready."

He walked off, allowing other guards to approach the two. Anastasia clenched her jaw, waiting for the asset to stand before leaving the room together.

It took a full day to arrive in New York; being transported with bikes, weapontry and other gear they might need. They camped out in a hotel under alias' before heading out to complete their tasks.

The distance crumble of dirt under tires caught their attention, causing both heads to turn. Headlights shone, making them squint slightly.

After the car passed them, they turned on their bikes, quickly trailing and catching up the vehicle.

The asset drove forward, driving beside the passenger window before firing a single bullet inside. Anastasia watched as the car instantly swerved to the left, smashing into a pole. While she slowed down behind the car, the asset turned to meet up with her.

Anastasia was the first to kick out the stand and get off the bike. She went for the trunk, allowing the asset to reach over her and pop it open with his metal hand. After, he left her to stalk towards the driver's door.

With a sharp click of the latches, the case opened and revealed five IV bags filled with a vivid blue substance. She nodded to herself, closing the case and hauled it out by one hand.

Her eyes lifted, watching as a man with white hair attempt to crawl from the car. The asset took hold of his hair, pulling up him to sit on his knees. The Soldier lifted his metal fist, hesitating to strike.

"Sergeant Barnes?" The man asked before his eyes met with Anastasia's. His expression shifted. "Anastasia?"

The Soldier suddenly punched twice; that's all it took. The man's eyes slid close and his body fell limp when the asset let go.

"Howard," a weary female voice suddenly called from within the vehicle.

Anastasia peered through the back window, spotting a head move back and forth slowly.

The asset dragged the body back into the car, propping his head against the wheel to pose it as an accident. When he stood to his full height, he gave a sharp flick with his chin, prompting her to get back on her bike and secure the case down.

He rounded the other side, easily grabbing hold of the woman's neck before squeezing. She gasped before gagging against his hold. Anastasia adverted her eyes, waiting until her voice died off.

The Soldier returned to his bike after, gazing over at her. Anastasia unholstered a pistol from her thigh, aiming it at the camera that was set up by the building. She shot a single round, perfectly hitting it and destroying the evidence.

The asset revved his bike to life, allowing Anastasia to led them back to their hotel and wait for extraction the following morning.

THE two made it back to their Siberian facility in two days, presenting the serum to Karpov and receiving praise. He mentioned the Winter Soldier Program, which was still a work in progress; but close to being completed.

By the next day, there were four volunteers for the program in the medical quarters. They were each hooked up to an IV bag, but Karpov pulled Anastasia aside while the process happened.

"Soldier, we want to give you the fifth bag. It says on record you aren't enhanced and we want to give you that gift."

She didn't react or respond in any way, not like she felt she could. He hummed in approval, gesturing for two doctors to usher her to an empty bed.

Anastasia stiffly laid down, sticking out her left arm for the doctors to put an IV in. When it was switched on to drip, she instantly felt a jolt overtake her. She shivered, feeling the liquid enter her bloodstream.

Her head shifted to the right, spotting the other four volunteers stare at her in her line of vision. Her frown only deepend, closing her eyes and hoping the procedure would be over soon.

AS if it was on a timed cue, the IV bag ran out, causing searing pain to suddenly strike Anastasia. Her eyes shot open and a scream ripped from her throat. Her body convulsed, making her scratch at the needle in her arm.

The doctors yelled for guards, who swiftly dragged Anastasia to her cell. Before she left the room, she noticed Karpov standing by, smirking.

Her body slammed onto the cot, and she felt sweat coat her body thickly. Anastasia's face grew red as more cries filled the corridor. The guards strapped on medical restraints so she couldn't harm herself in the transition stage.

The pain seemed to blind her, making her head shake back and forth.

It went on for a full hour, and Karpov listened to the other four express their pain as well, while filling out paperwork. When the screams suddenly stopped, he froze, lifting his eyes.

He stood from his desk, deciding to check on Anastasia first. He peaked through the door, seeing her body lay still and her face turned away. Her arms laid by her side with one palm facing upward.

The door creaked loudly, and he approached her carefully. Anastasia's chest rose and fell rhythmically, making him believe she was asleep.

Karpov leaned over her, narrowing his eyes. "Enigma,"

She didn't respond.

He tried again, prodding her shoulder with his index finger.

"Enig—"

Her hand shot up, having enough give with the restraint to seize his neck with new strength.

His eyes shot wide open, audibly choking. Karpov struggled to call for help, but soon many guards flooded the room, holding down Anastasia's arms and legs.

Karpov stumbled back, holding his neck gingerly. After grunting in anger, he stormed out, ordering for the asset to train the others. Before he could exit, he turned and gave a sharp look at Enigma. "She will not train! Put her in the icebox."

She glared back, filled with newfound rage. She writhed against all the men, but couldn't overpower them as she was hauled to the Crysostasis chambers.

SIBERIA, 2014

ANASTASIA awoke abruptly, feeling groggy. She had no time to wake further before getting pulled from a chamber and onto her feet. She nearly fell. Her head turned, seeing the asset was pulled from his sleep as well. Karpov was the one to greet them.

"You have a new mission. You'll both be transferred to Washington in one hour. There, someone else will inform you of further details." He gave a dark look to both of them. With no proper goodbye, he stalked away.

The Soldier and Anastasia looked at one another silently, both wondering what was coming next.
