Chapter 78
Jenna was beyond happy to be reunited with all of her best friends. Lily had let her fiery red hair grow over the summer, but meanwhile, Alice had cut her brown hair even shorter than last year.
Marlene hadn't changed much, though she had gotten a bad case of acne across her cheeks, which she complained about every ten minutes throughout the whole train ride.
"I'm starving. When's the trolley lady coming?" said Marlene, placing a hand over her grumbling belly.
"Our compartment is near the end of the train. It will take her a long while to get here, cause she has to stop at every compartment on the way," Lily explained, who had taken out her new Arithmancy book to read, determined to stay ahead of the class even before its start.
"I can go to her myself and get some sweets, if you're that hungry," Jenna suggested.
"Ooh, that would be great, Jen! Thanks!" Marlene grinned happily. "Can I pay my share when we arrive at Hogwarts? My wallet is in my trunk."
"Yeah, sure." Jenna shrugged, getting up to her feet. "What do you want me to get you?"
"Whatever you like, doesn't matter — ooh, but definitely get Pumpkin Pastries!"
"Okay," said Jenna, opening the compartment door to step outside.
"Don't come back without the Pumpkin Pasties!" Marlene yelled after her.
"Okay!" Jenna shouted back, chuckling to herself as she walked up the train corridor, until she reached the trolley lady.
Jenna stood a bit back while a sixth year boy was buying a whole bunch of Sugar Quills. But she became startled the next moment when a voice suddenly came from right behind her.
"Hey, Jenny."
Even though the voice had become almost unrecognizable, Jenna knew exactly who it was.
With her teeth gritting together, she slowly turned around, only to see Sirius Black, standing there with his usual smirk dangling from the edge of his lips handsomely.
"What do you want, Black?" Jenna said coldly, folding her arms.
"Nothing from you, believe me." He grinned. "Just some chocolate frogs for Peter — he collects the cards. And also Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans. We're playing a game. You're free to join us."
"I'd rather jump off the train, but thanks." Jenna gave him a fake sweet smile before turning away from him.
She tried to ignore the surprise she had felt after hearing how much deeper his voice had gotten. He had even grown a lot taller than James had.
"What can I get you from the trolley, Deary?" the old lady asked Jenna after the sixth year boy had paid her and gone back to his compartment.
"Um... can I have four Cauldron Cakes, four Sugar Quills, and two Pumpkin Pasties?" said Jenna.
"Not sure if we have any Pumpkin Pasties left, dear. But let me check," said the old witch, bending down to check her trolley.
"Pumpkin Pasties?" Sirius scoffed, but Jenna tried to ignore his presence. "They're disgusting. Why would you even want them?"
Jenna didn't reply.
"I only have one left," the trolley lady finally said.
"It's all right. I'll take it," said Jenna, but when she reached out for her pocket to take out her money, she came to a halt when she found all her pockets empty. "Shoot. I forgot to bring my wallet."
"Hmm... Interesting..." Sirius sighed deeply in a mocking manner, before digging into his own pocket and taking out a few Galleons. "You know you can burrow some from me, Jenny. All you have to do is ask."
"Not even on my death bed." Jenna grumbled. Her pride would never allow her to burrow anything from him. She then turned to the trolley lady, saying, "I'll be back."
With that, Jenna turned around and ran down the corridor, returning after a minute with her wallet in hand. She reached the trolley lady just as Sirius paid her for his bag of Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans.
"There you go," Jenna started, taking out her money from her wallet and giving it to the witch. With a kind smile, the old lady handed Jenna the four Cauldron Cakes and Sugar Quills in a pink plastic bag. "Can I have the Pumpkin Pastry too, please?"
"I'm afraid, this young gentleman here just bought the last one," said the witch, moving on down the corridor with her trolley.
Jenna turned around slowly, throwing daggers with her eyes as she faced Sirius's smirky face. If looks could kill, he would be six feet under the ground right now.
"Give it back. Now," she snarled dangerously.
"Sorry, Jenny. Guess you should've asked for my help when you had the chance." Sirius shrugged, walking down the corridor.
Jenna paced quickly after him, grabbing his arm to stop him. "Give it to me, Black! You didn't even like Pumpkin Pastries! You said they were disgusting!"
"I don't know what you're talking about, Jenny," he said, acting oblivious.
"I'll kill y —!"
Jenna was saying, but she was caught off when a voice said from behind them, "Everything okay here?"
Turning around, they saw Remus walking toward them from the other end of the train, looking between them curiously.
"I came here to see what had taken you so long. You know how cranky James gets when he's hungry," Remus told Sirius. "What's going on?"
Jenna quickly let go of Sirius's arm. "He bought the last Pumpkin Pastry even though he knew I wanted it!"
"Really?" Remus turned to glance at Sirius in confusion. "I thought you didn't even like Pumpkin Pastries."
Sirius shrugged again. "I changed my mind."
"You changed your mind in the span of thirty seconds!?" Jenna retorted.
"Yeah, why not? Why is that so hard to believe?" Sirius grinned.
"Ugh, fine! Have the stupid pastry! I don't care!" Jenna snapped, huffing out in frustration before walking back down the train corridor angrily.
"What was that all about?" Remus asked Sirius.
"Who knows? Girls are all crazy." Sirius snorted, making a move to walk away, but Remus was quick to grab a hold of his sleeve and drag him back.
"I'm not talking about how Jenna was acting. I'm talking about you."
Sirius suddenly tensed up, his grin fading away. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Remus lowered his tone, saying quietly, "I thought you liked her."
At those words, Sirius jerked his hand away from Remus. "No, I don't. I never did."
"You told me you liked her in our first year, remember?"
"I don't like her, Lupin! Get that idea out of your head!" Sirius snapped before angrily walking away from him. But Remus remained on the spot, now smiling.
While Sirius was busy overreacting, he had taken the Pumpkin Pastry out of Sirius's plastic bag which contained the sweets he had bought.
Making sure Sirius was out of sight, Remus walked down the corridor, throwing quick glances inside the compartments in search for Jenna, until he finally found her near the end of the train, sitting with her friends.
He pushed their compartment door open, peering his head inside. The four girls looked up at him, their attention caught.
"Jenna? Can I talk to you outside for a moment?" he said softly.
Nodding, Jenna got to her feet and followed Remus out of the compartment and back into the train's corridor. "What is it?"
"I wanted to give you this," said Remus, handing Jenna the Pumpkin Pastry. "Er... Sirius told me to give it to you. He also sent his apology."
Jenna took it from him as she stared up at Remus in surprise, until a smile of realization finally appeared across her face. "Thank you, Remus."
"It wasn't me. Sirius told me to do it," Remus said nervously, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
Jenna let out a giggle. "You're a terrible liar."
"Hey, I'm a great liar!" He retorted defensively, making her laugh.
"Sure." She grinned, though still not convinced. "Well, thank Sirius for me."
And so, sending a small wink at his direction, she walked back into her compartment and joined her friends again.
