Chapter 60

For days, all that anyone could talk about was the prank which was pulled on those Slytherin students who were unfortunate enough to drink from the tea, coffee, or the pumpkin juice that morning for breakfast.

As the professors later realized, the Slytherins' drinks apparently had a few drops of a potion inside it which could cause body hair to grow to a great extent. It wasn't a big problem which Madam Pomfrey couldn't fix with a simple antidote, but it still left everyone wondering who the mysterious pranksters were.

The potion was said to be extremely advanced, so everyone's main suspects were students who were in sixth or seventh year. Although Lily had a completely different view on the matter.

"It was Potter. I know it," she said with certainty as the four girls were sitting in the Great Hall for breakfast the next morning.

Marlene looked over at Jenna with raised brows.

Jenna rolled her eyes at Marlene. "Not me! James!"

"Yes. Him and Black!" Lily said firmly, shaking her head with extreme disapproval. "I talked to Severus. He's sure it was them too."

"It looked like a job for more than two people, if you ask me," said Jenna, sniffing her tea to make sure it didn't have a funny smell about it before drinking it. "Remus and Peter must've been in on it."

"Maybe. But it was Potter's idea," Lily said grudgingly, crossing her arms over her chest. "I went after Severus yesterday to check on him. Madam Pomfrey wouldn't let me in the ward cause it was too crowded, but I talked to him last night and he said it was horrible. Some of the Slytherins got really terrified, you know. They got some of the poor first years, too."

Marlene snorted. "It was pretty funny, if you ask me."

"There was nothing funny about it, Mar! It was a mean, cruel prank," Lily chided angrily. "Actually you can't even call it a prank. It's bullying!"

"Ooh, the morning mail has arrived," said Alice, her gaze upward as dozens of owls flooded into the Great Hall, carrying the letters and envelopes of the day. She didn't seem to have been listening to their conversation, too lost in her own little world.

"Is it just me, or are those owls coming our way?" Marlene asked, her eyes following Alice's gaze and looking up.

Jenna swallowed a sip of her drink before looking up, only to see four large tawny owls carrying a long, thin package. Everyone was now staring at them, their attention caught toward the large parcel.

Before Jenna could answer Marlene, to all of their surprise and astonishment, the owls flew down toward them and dropped the enormous package on the table before them, knocking down the dish which contained toasts.

"Woah!" Marlene exclaimed, her eyes widening as all of them stared down at the wrapped-up package. "Is this what I think it is?"

Jenna gaped down at it, excitement exploding in the pit of her stomach. She couldn't believe her eyes. Hastily, she picked up the envelope stuck on the package which had her name on it, and briskly opened to see what was written inside the letter with her heart throbbing.

Dear Jenna,

You have no idea how happy we were when we received your letter. Congratulations! We couldn't have been prouder of you.

Now that all of your hard work and practice have finally paid off, we thought we should make it up to you and get you this gift. We hope you'll like it, and don't forget to write to us and say how your first practice goes. You're going to make an amazing Seeker for the Gryffindor team.

Lots of love,
Mum & Dad

Jenna found it hard to breathe for a moment as she slowly lowered the letter. Lily, Alice, and Marlene were looking at her with bright smiles.

"Well, open it!" Marlene blurted out impatiently, snapping Jenna out of her thoughts.

Laughing happily, Jenna set down the letter and reached forward, unwrapping the parcel with the help of her friends, only to reveal a sleek and shiny broomstick, more glorious than the one she had at home.

"Merlin's beard!" Jenna looked up at James's voice, seeing that he was now standing right behind her, staring down at the broom with wide eyes.

But he wasn't alone. Sirius was there as well, both of them trying to take a better look at Jenna's new broomstick, glancing at it in awe. Everyone else sitting around them was watching as well, sneaking a glance at it.

"Did Mum and Dad send it?" James questioned, his eyes still fixed on the broom as he observed the shiny wooden handle.

"Yeah," Jenna replied, not able to hide away her glee. James then reached out to grab it, but Jenna slapped his hand away playfully with a grin.

"I have the exact one at home," said Sirius as he smirked arrogantly.

"Do you really have to boast about everything?" Lily asked him fervently.

"Not everything." Sirius shrugged, still grinning. "Just about the things I have."

Lily rolled her eyes in reply.

"What would you know about broomsticks and Quidditch, Evans?" said James, always ready for a chance to argue with someone.

Lily's head shot up toward him, her glare burning in fury. "I know enough!"

"Oh, yeah?" James glanced down at her challengingly from where he stood. "And what's your favorite team?"

"I — well —" Lily fumbled with the words before folding her arms stubbornly. "It's none of your business, Potter."

James smirked in triumph. "That's what I thought."

This time, Lily glared up at him with daggers in her eyes, fuming in anger. If looks could kill, James would be six feet under ground right now.

"You think you're the coolest person on earth just because you know more about Quidditch than some others?" Lily snapped.

"No." James shrugged, his complexion as smug as ever. "I am the coolest person on earth. Being great at Quidditch just adds to it."

Sirius laughed at the expression on Lily's face, finding amusement in the argument just as much as James. Alice was looking between them worriedly, alarmed whenever she could sense a fight approaching. Although Jenna and Marlene were too busy gawking down at the new broomstick to pay any attention to the others.

"You know what, Potter?" Lily snarled, shooting up to her feet. "I know it was you and your friends who pulled the prank on the Slytherins yesterday!"

"Who? Us?" James gasped dramatically, as though thoroughly surprised. "We would never do such a thing."

"Tsk, tsk. That's a big accusation, Evans," said Sirius, shaking his head at her. "Can you prove it?"

"I don't have to prove it!" Lily said sharply, glaring between the two. "It was obvious! Severus knows it too!"

"You're taking Snivellus's word over ours?" Sirius said with a fake-hurt expression. "Ouch. I'm hurt."

     "Don't call him that!"

"All right. We'll call him Snivelly, then, if it bothers you so much," said James. "But don't believe everything he tells you. All the grease on his hair has probably penetrated his brain. He'll say all sort of rubbish." Sirius let out a bark of laughter at that.

"You — you —" Lily huffed angrily, looking as though she was close to slapping him across the face.

"You what?" James raised a brow at her, as though deliberately trying to make her angrier.

"You're nothing but a bullying arrogant toe-rag, Potter!" Lily yelled, pointing a finger at him furiously. "You two make me sick!"

James and Sirius snorted before roaring with laughter as Lily took her backpack madly and stormed out of the Great Hall.

"Let's go after her," Alice said quietly as she stood up worriedly, tugging at Jenna's sleeve to get her attention while the two boys kept on laughing, imitating Lily in a lofty voice.

Getting up to her feet, Jenna angrily smacked James at the back of his head before taking her broomstick and following her friends out of the Great Hall.
