Chapter 09

"I'll go first to take care of them on the other side," Fleamont sugggested to his wife, before turning to look down at the twins. "Here, watch me closely. Passing the barrier is really easy if you focus."

Mr. Potter then grabbed onto James's cart and made a run toward the wall between platform 9 and 10. Jenna winced when her father neared the brick wall, but she let out a sigh of relief when he passed right through it without any difficulties.

"Okay, you kids go next. I'll bring your cart, Jenna," said Mrs. Potter.

But she groaned the next moment when the twins started their usual argument about who got to go first.

Jenna had made a step forward, but James grabbed onto her sleeve, dragging her back with a frown.

"What do you think you're doing?" He raised a brow at his sisters. "I'm going first."

"Why you!?" Jenna argued, her eyebrows knitting together.

     "Because I'm older!"

     "Only eleven minutes!"

"Kids, kids!" Mrs. Potter rushed forward, trying to separate them before they could start fighting in the middle of the station. "It doesn't matter who goes first!"

"Yes, it does!" James and Jenna said together in sync, glaring at each other afterward.

Mrs. Potter sighed again, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Fine. Just go at the same time. But be careful."

The twins nodded with excitement as they walked forward, standing beside each other and facing the wall.

"Race you there?" James whispered, smirking at her sideways.

Jenna grinned back challengingly. "You're on."

And then, they both made a run toward the barrier, closing their eyes as they neared it. For a split second, Jenna feared that she might hit the solid wall, but she never did. They kept running, passing through the barrier.

But Jenna let out a gasp and her eyes shot open when she bumped into someone. Opening her eyes, she saw a grim-looking boy, turning sharply to look back at her.

"Watch it!" he snapped, and with one last glare at her direction, he moved toward the train.

"Stupid git!" James snarled as his glance followed the boy. He then took his wand out of his pocket and started to go after him, but Jenna caught his arm and held him back.

"What do you think you're doing!?" Jenna hissed at her brother.

"Teaching someone some manners," James said with a grin.

"You don't know any spells!" Jenna retorted. "What are you gonna do? Throw sparks at him?"

"No," James started a fake sweet smile, "but if it comes to the worst, I could always shove this up his —"

"What took you guys so long?" They were cut off by Mr. Potter, who was now walking toward them. "C'mon, you two. Move out of the way."

That was then Jenna finally looked around her, her mouth falling slightly open as she found herself in platform 9 3/4 and paid attention to her surroundings.

A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign overhead said Hogwarts Express, eleven o'clock. Smoke from the engine of the train drifted over the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of every color looked around from their baskets. Owls hooted to one another in a disgruntled sort of way over the babble and the scraping of heavy trunks.

"Well, Mum, your moment has come at last," Jenna started jokingly, once Euphemia joined them, "this is where you finally get rid of us."

But the words had barely left her mouth that Mrs. Potter bent down and brought Jenna in a bone-crushing hug before starting to sob, causing Jenna's hair to go pink from embarrassment.

James, who was finding his sister's miserable face amusing, broke down into a laughter. But it didn't last too long because Mr. Potter quickly said,

"You think that's funny, do you? Then you'll find this hilarious!" He then went forward and hugged James so hard that it got hard for the boy to breathe as he tried to break free.

When the twins were finally free from their parents' grasps, and Jenna's hair turned back to blue, they said their last goodbyes and went on the Hogwarts express.

"Write to us often!" Mrs. Potter called after them, and the twins waved them goodbye, carrying their trunks inside.

"You go and find us a compartment, will you?" said James as they walked through the train. "I'll go and find Sirius."

"Who?" Jennas mused, raising a brow at him.

"You know, the boy I told you about? The one I met in Madam Malkin's Robes shop in Diagon Alley?"

"Oh, yeah." She nodded. "The one that had set the needles flying around the shop and attacking costumers?"

"Yeah." James sniggered, remembering the scene. "He was pretty cool. I'm sure you'll like him."

"Alright, then," said Jenna. "I'll go find us a compartment."

And off she went. The first few carriages were already packed with students, some hanging out of the window to talk to their families, some fighting over seats. Even though they were pretty early, everywhere seemed to be either full, or held by an older student who were probably waiting for their friends.

But at last, Jenna came upon a compartment with only a girl in it, who seemed to be around her age. With her red hair covering her face, the girl was seated over the window, leaning her head against it.

Slowly, Jenna pulled the compartment's door open, looking inside at the girl. But when the girl's head turned around, Jenna realized that she had been crying.

"Hi," Jenna said awkwardly, trying to pretend as if she hadn't noticed the girl's teary face. "Do you mind if my brother and I joined you? He's bringing a friend too, so it might get a little crowded. So if you're waiting for someone I can just leave –"

"–No, it's all right," the girl cut her off and smiled kindly.

"Great!" Jenna sat down after placing her trunk above her seat with difficulty. "I'm Jenna, by the way."

"I'm Lily Evans," said the red-haired girl.

But before Jenna could get the chance to continue the conversation, the girl turned her head back to look out of the window again, obviously wanting to be left alone.

Just then, Jenna saw two figures run past their compartment, and she quickly recognized one of them as her brother.

So jumping to her feet, she opened the compartment's door and shouted after the two boys, "Oi! J.P! Over here!"

The boys stopped immediately, turning around. "Oh, there you are." said James, walking forward with his new friend.

The two of them then came inside, joining Jenna and Lily. But neither of the boys even glanced at the red-haired girl who was again lost in her own little world behind the window.

"Jenna," James started, gesturing at his friend, "this is —"

"— Sirius Black." The boy cut him off with a wink at Jenna. "At your service."

The boy had piercing gray eyes with hair a little longer than what boys usual had, and he was rather handsome for his age. But for some reason, he looked really familiar

James continued, "Sirius, this is my sister. Jenna."

"Hi." Jenna gave him a little wave.

But a grin appearing on Sirius's face, he took Jenna's hand which she had raised, but instead of shaking it, he planted a kiss on her knuckle.

"Hey!" James and Jenna yelled together, narrowing their eyes dangerously at him as she quickly jerked her hand away from him.

Although the incident was soon forgotten as they started talking about their stories of receiving their Hogwarts letter.

"Dad was so happy when the owl brought our letters," said James.

"Yeah!" Jenna nodded eagerly. "I mean, he knew we were gonna get it, but he set the couch on fire when it finally arrived."

Just then, the door to the compartment opened and in came a thin boy with dark and greasy hair. By one glance at Lily, he went forward and took the seat before her.

James and Sirius had gone back to talking, but Jenna was paying close attention to what the boy and girl were saying.

"I don't want to talk to you," Lily said in a constricted voice.

"Why not?" The boy asked.

"Tuney h-hates me. Because we saw the letter from Dumbledore."

"But we're going! This is it! We're off to Hogwarts!" The boy said and Lily nodded, mopping her eyes, and then half smiled. "You'd better be in Slytherin."

"Slytherin?" James, who hadn't paid the slightest interest in them until that point, repeated in disgust. "Who wants to be in Slytherin? I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" He asked Jenna and she nodded.

But Sirius, who was sitting opposite James and next to Jenna, did not smile. "My whole family have been in Slytherin," he said with a frown.

"Blimey," said James, his eyes widening. "And I thought you seemed all right."

Sirius then grinned. "Maybe I'll break the tradition. Where are you two heading, if you've had the choice?"

At that question, James and Jenna grinned and then without hesitation, they withdrew their imaginary swords and pointed them up, saying harmonically, "Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart!" They chuckled and James added, "Just like our dad."

The thin boy snorted at that and James turned toward him. "Got a problem with that?"

"No," said the boy, though his slight sneer said otherwise. "If you'd rather be brawny than brainy –"

"Where're you hoping to go, seeing as you're neither?" Sirius interjected.

James roared with laughter. Lily then stood up angrily, and walked towards the compartment's door. "C'mon, Severus. Let's find another compartment."

"Ooooh..." James and Sirius imitated her lofty voice and James tried to trip Severus as he passed.

"See ya, Snivellus!" Sirius called behind them as the compartment door slammed shut.

"Ooh, she was fiery." James grinned, watching them walk away. But when he glanced back at Jenna and saw her frowning, he said, "What?"

"That was mean," she said, giving him a scolding look.

"Oh, c'mon J.P." He groaned, rolling his eyes. "We were just having a little fun."

The atmosphere in the compartment was tense for a little while, but when the train finally got going and the station disappeared from behind the window, the fun began.
