Chapter 93
Saturdays were always the boys' favorite day of the week. James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter would sleep in until noon, and stay awake roaming the castle until early hours of the morning without having to worry about classes the next day. And even if they missed breakfast, they would just visit the kitchen.
It was only two hours before dawn that the four boys returned to their dormitory that night. James was just about to take off his glasses and jump under his covers that he suddenly saw a thick and old book on his nightstand, with a note on top of it.
It was The Quest to the Impossible Magic book, which they had asked Jenna to get from McGonagall's office.
It was the book that could teach them how to become Animagi.
"Merlin's beard! Sirius! Remus! Peter! The book's here! We finally have it!" James yelled out, his heartbeat speeding up with adrenaline.
Sirius and Remus — who had already gone to bed — jumped up and hurried toward James, and Peter ran out of the bathroom only moments later and joined them where they were standing.
"What does the note say?" Remus asked. "That's Jenna's handwriting, isn't it?"
"Go ahead and read it already!" Sirius nudged James enthusiastically. None of them seemed able to contain their excitements.
I need to return this book to McGonagall in one week, so whatever you need, finish reading it until then.
To open it, blow the dust off the book's cover. When you do that, scattered letters will appear on the cover of the book. They are an anagram. The book will open once you solve the anagram and say it out loud.
Please be careful. People have died trying the spells and potions in this book.
- J.P
"Are — are you guys sure this is a good idea?" Peter said, gulping. "People have died doing these things."
"He's right." Remus sighed, looking nervous. "You don't have to do this. It's too dangerous."
"More reason to do it." James shrugged, smirking.
"Yeah." Sirius nodded. "What's life without a little danger?"
With that, James then placed the note down, held up the book, and blew out a strong breath to clean away the dust covering the book.
Just as they'd been warned, the moment the dust flew off the book, letters magically appeared on the black cover of the book; random letters that were written in red, scattered all over it.
The boys stared down at the letters, trying to figure out the anagram, until James finally said, "What you allow, is what you will continue!"
As soon as the words were said out loud, the scattered words began moving until they fell beside each other in that exact order to form the sentence, and right at that moment, the lock that had the book bound, opened with a crack.
"Wicked!" Sirius said in astonishment, grinning as James opened the book.
The four Gryffindor boys climbed up James's bed, sitting on the mattress as they flipped through the pages, searching for the part which explained all about human transformation; Metamorphmagi, werewolves, Animagi.
Peter had brought a box of cookies his mother had sent him and opened its lid, placing it on the bed so they could all share. The candles inside the room were growing dimmer, but none of the boys felt even an ounce of sleepiness. They were wide awake with excitement.
"Found it!" James yelled out once he reached the chapter they were looking for.
He was halfway through swallowing his cookie when he spoke, causing the food to go down the wrong drain. He started to cough, and Sirius, who found this the perfect opportunity, began hitting James's back as hard as he could.
"Ouch! Gerroff me, you troll!" James winced in pain, pushing Sirius away who was laughing. "You nearly broke my back in half!"
Sirius threw his his hands up defensively. "What? I was just trying to help. Didn't want you to suffocate, now did I?"
"Um... guys?" Remus, who had been skimming through the page, cut their fight off. "You better take a look at this. It's... it's so much more complicated than we'd thought."
"Oh, rubbish. There's no way —" James fell silent as soon as he read the first sentence.
"Whaf doesit say?" Peter mumbled worriedly, his mouth full.
James paused for a minute, reading the first paragraph thoroughly before answering. "Mandrakes. We need Mandrake leaves, first thing."
"Why? What do we have to do with them?" Peter questioned.
"Merlin's beard... says we have to keep a Mandrake leaf in our mouth for a whole month – from full moon to full moon to be precise. It says if you swallow the leaf or remove it from your mouth at any point, you have to start the whole thing all over again. Our saliva has to be completely penetrated into it."
Sirius snorted.
"What?" James raised a brow at him.
"Penetrated," Sirius said in a teasing voice.
James sniggered along with him. Remus rolled his eyes at how childish they were being, meanwhile Peter looked thoroughly confused, still not getting the joke.
Although he forced out an awkward laughter so he wouldn't feel left out.
"Could you keep on reading now?" Remus told James. "What do we need the leaves for?"
"I guess need it for a potion in the end. That's the next step."
"A potion?" Remus groaned. He wasn't exactly talented in the brewing area. Thankfully Sirius and James seemed to be perfect at everything they did. They could handle that part.
"Then what?" Sirius asked.
"Then we have to find a small crystal phial that receives the pure rays of the moon, put your saliva-filled leaf inside, and add one of our own hairs," James said, reading through the page. "Then it has explained all about the steps to make the potion... we have to add a silver teaspoon of dew from a place that neither sunlight nor human feet have touched for a full seven days. Then we have to add the chrysalis of a Death's-head Hawk Moth to the crystal phial as well. Ugh, where the hell are we supposed to find all these!?"
Sirius shrugged casually. "I know a guy."
James gave him a surprised look. "You know a guy? How the hell do you know someone who can get us all that."
"Detours to Knocktun Alley, of course." Sirius said boastfully, winking.
"Brilliant." James grinned, clearly impressed.
He turned his eyes back on the book. "Anyway... we then have to put this potion in a quiet, dark place and leave it alone until the next electrical storm. That's the time for the transformation. It says while waiting for the transfiguration to begin, you must place your wand tip over your heart and speak the following incantation: 'Amato Animo Animato Animagus'. If you keep repeating your incantation, there will come a time when, with the touch of the wand-tip to the chest, a second heartbeat may be sensed. As soon as lightning appears in the sky, go to the place where you've hidden your crystal phial. If you've done everything right then you will discover a mouthful of blood-red potion inside it. Then move somewhere where you aren't going to alarm anyone or place yourself in physical danger during your transformation. The shape of the creature into which you will shortly transform will appear, and you will transfigure."
"It says the first transformation is usually uncomfortable and frightening. Clothing and items such as glasses or jewellery meld to the skin and become one with fur, scales or spikes," Sirius read the following paragraph. "That's pretty awesome."
"Hmm... sounds easy enough. If we follow this step by step, we can do it," said James.
Peter grimaced. This was the most difficult thing he had ever heard in his entire life.
"But we have to give this book back to Jenna in one week," said Remus. "I'll stay up tonight and copy down everything the books says."
"No need." Sirius smirked, snatching the book out of James's hand. "I know a charm that can copy the whole page into a parchment. It will leave nothing out."
"Boys," James said with a sly grin, clapping his hands together, "we are going to have the time of our lives. This is just the beginning."
