Chapter 5
After a quite uneventful boat ride, James, Remus, Sirius and Peter had made it to Hogwarts. Peter was staring all around with a mixture of excitement and sheer terror on his face, both James and Sirius were walking around like they already owned the place and Remus was hanging back, not really saying much or looking at much and rubbing the back of his neck a lot as if he was trying not to scratch it.
"Well, well, well."
"Oh Merlin, here we go." Sirius muttered. "Bella. Great to see you."
"So what Aunt Walburga was true. My little cousin isn't a Squib. He's finally come to Hogwarts."
"Put a sock in it, Bella." Sirius muttered. "You should be in the Great Hall, anyway. Along with all the other Death Eaters."
"Sorting ceremonies are boring. Besides, we all know where you're going to end up. Either that or it's get disowned. And then guess where all the money goes."
"Do you have anything useful to say or are you just going to stay here gloating at me?"
"Miss Black. Is there any particular reason you are fraternising with First Years?"
"No Professor."
"And where should you be, Miss Black?"
"In the Great Hall, Professor."
"Then I suggest you get to it."
Bellatrix nodded, shot a look of complete venom at Sirius and ran up the stairs to the Great Hall.
"McGonagall is awesome." James hissed to Sirius.
"I know."
"When I call your name, you will step up to the Sorting Hat to be Sorted into your House." McGonagall looked out over the sea of terrified First Years and unrolled her huge piece of parchment. Sirius knotted his fingers behind his back, knowing that he was going to be the first out of all his friends. A couple of names passed.
"Sirius Black." Sirius took a deep breath and tried to keep a steady, confident pace as he walked up to the Sorting Hat.
"Another Black, eh?" The Sorting Hat's voice seemed to be right inside his head. It put Sirius off slightly. "I know just what to do with you."
"Please don't put me in Slytherin." Sirius thought quickly. "Anywhere but there."
"Really? Don't feel like you fit in, eh? Well, we'll see where else we can put you. Hmm, a lot of bravery. Willing to die for your friends, are you? And, oh, what's this?" The Sorting Hat paused, deliberating. "Interesting. Well then, had better be Gryffindor!" The last word came out as a yell from the rip in the hat and the Gryffindor table erupted into cheers and clapping. Sirius stumbled over to the table, facing away from the Slytherin one so he wouldn't see his cousins glaring at him.
"Remus Lupin." How was it his turn already. Remus tried to keep walking in a straight line up to the Sorting Hat but kept stumbling to the side.
"You're not going to faint." He told himself. "You're not going to faint. Just because it's close to a full moon does not mean you're going to faint." By the time he got to the Sorting Hat, the scars on his face were standing out and he was as pale as the ghosts that floated along the sides of the Great Hall.
"You're an interesting one. A lot of brains, you're smarter than a lot of people I've seen. But what's this? My, you're very young to be dealing with such a burden. So very young and brave. And... oh. This is very interesting. No, you're a Gryffindor!" The last word was a yell and was quickly overpowered by the yells and cheers that erupted from th Gryffindor table. A little colour back in his cheeks, Remus ran over to the Gryffindor table and sat down next to Sirius.
"Peter Pettigrew." Peter closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and stumbled over his own feet trying to get to the Sorting Hat. He tripped and fell and a chorus of laughs floated over from the Slytherin table. Peter growled and got up, managing to stay on his feet the rest of the way to the Sorting Hat.
"Now this is interesting indeed. Loyalty and lots of it. But so much anger."
"I'm not angry." Peter thought.
"Denial too, huh? That's a bad mix, little Mousey."
"How did you-"
"I know everything. Now, Slytherin would be the appropriate House with someone of your... ambition. But that doesn't sit right with you, does it? So, it'd better be Gryffindor!" Peter had stumbled over and sat down by the time the cheers had started in full.
"You did great, Peter." Remus reassured from across the table.
"Yeah right."
"Hey, at least you didn't almost faint."
"James Potter." James hadn't expected to be this nervous. But here he was, nervous. Still keeping up his cool exterior, he went over to the Sorting Hat as if he hadn't a care in the world.
"A Potter, eh? I remember your father when he was at school. Quite the trouble-maker. And it seems that you'll be following in his footsteps. You're a very brave person, James, but there's so much fear in you."
"I'm not scared." James thought indignantly.
"No, of course not." Even though the Sorting Hat didn't have eyes, James could picture it rolling its eyes at him. "Better be Gryffindor!"
James' face lit up with a huge grin as he scrambled over to the Gryffindor table.
"The whole gang together, eh?" Sirius asked, laughing.
"Must be magic." James replied, to excited to laugh. His years at Hogwarts were going to be good.
I can't write song lyrics so you didn't get a Sorting Song. Also, I kinda forgot that E comes before L in the alphabet so... yeah, I'm an idiot.
Bye,
Blaize
