Chapter 8

Loki read until the last possible moment before the press conference. He used magic to change into his perfectly fitting all black suit and looked at himself in the mirror, admiring the sleek Midgardian garment. Midgard didn't have much of value, but this suit was definitely one of those few items.

Loki looked warily to the door to his suite when there was a knock on it after he was dressed. He frowned, but went to do the door to see who was there. His expression softened when he saw Morgan on the other side, dressed in a beautiful black and gold gown. The gown looked amazing with her hair, which was styled for the event, and showed off enough cleavage that the top of her arc reactor was visible.

Loki's eyes widened in surprise at seeing her. He hadn't expected to see her until they were at the event. And she looked absolutely stunning in her gown. That definitely helped have his mouth on the floor. Though he was a prince and not an oaf like Thor, "You look lovely, Lady Morgan," he said warmly, a prince at heart and compliments to ladies came easily.

"You look great too. That suit suits you," she replied brightly with a hint of a blush to her cheeks that said she was definitely interested in him. He was hot as Hel in that suit and they both knew it.

Loki gave her a genuine smile. He liked the Starklet. "Thank you. Shall we get going?" He realized that she had come to escort him and make sure he didn't get lost. It was a kindness from his friend.

"Let's get the boring part over with. Then there's food," she reminded him brightly, clearly bribing him with food, but it was a good bribe. Loki nodded and offered her his arm. He was a gentleman, after all. Morgan smiled and placed her hand on his arm. Her magic seemed to shimmer when she touched his arm, not quite there, but trying to manifest.

"I haven't had anyone's seidr react to mine like that before," he observed at the strange behavior of her power.

She looked up at him, curiosity in her eyes. "What does that mean?"

"Your seidr, your magic, is trying to manifest, but something is blocking it. I don't quite know what to make of it," Loki admitted. He was the master magician of Asgard. He should understand how her magic was working, but it was unlike anything he'd seen, except in small children.

"That sounds strange," Morgan replied, sounding concerned since it also sounded like a problem. She didn't even really know or believe that she had magic. She hadn't been able to believe her eyes when she was dying in the tower two years ago. "You really think I have magic?"

Loki nodded. "I know you do. It's not malevolent, just odd. It will be alright. We'll figure it out together," he reassured her. Morgan nodded and tried to relax. She knew nothing about magic, but Loki had said it would be ok, so she had no choice but to believe him.

The pair walked together to the meeting and conference room. They soon arrived and Loki released Morgan so she could go to her father if she wanted. Thor came over to them before Morgan could move away. Someone had dressed him for the event, since he looked spiffed up as well and Loki knew the oaf couldn't manage that on his own. "Brother, Lady Morgana," Thor greeted them warmly, clearly pleased to see them and even more pleased to see them together. He liked that Loki had a friend.

Loki inclined his head. "Brother," he replied politely, wary and untrusting of his brother still. He was trying, but it would take time to earn Loki's trust again.

Morgan blushed at the fact that Thor always insisted on using her full name. She left the two brothers to their devices and headed into the crowd to watch the press conference. She wasn't part of the team and even though she was famous, she tried to stay out of the spotlight.

Loki groaned at being alone with Thor, but let Morgan leave. He found that he liked the Starklet and didn't want her to leave him alone. He went with Thor to take his place on the stage, putting on his court mask. He stood still and kept the court mask in place while the patriotic captain spoke about Loki's skills and his innocence in the battle of New York and how he was going to help the team now. Loki droned him out, catching sight of Morgan in the crowd of press. He hated the attention, but suffered through it because he had to. He was relieved when the press portion ended and the food portion started.

Morgan came up to Loki and took his arm again to lead him to the food as soon as he was off the stage. Tony gave them a brief disapproving look, but didn't stop the pair. They were in a crowded room full of press. "Trust me," she told him softly, seeing how much he hated the attention. She twisted the bracelet she was wearing. The mechanism inside flashed once and after that none of the press dared approach either of them.

Loki looked down at her with a raised eyebrow. "What did you do?" he asked her quietly, interested and curious as a cat.

"A bubble of privacy," she replied. "A nifty little program that acts as an EMP and will delete any media footage. I become a much less desirable target if the press can't get pictures of me without their pictures being erased," she explained, sounding so brilliant.

Loki chuckled. "Very clever, Lady Morgan," he said, impressed.

"You're safe if you stay close to me," she reassured him with a grin and a far too innocent smirk "Which has the unfortunate side effect for you that you have to stay close to me" she teased. Annoying little imp.

Loki chuckled. "Thank you, Starklet,"

She beamed, glad to have gotten him to laugh. She liked seeing him smile and laugh. She also liked the nickname. It meant they were friends. She'd bullied him into being her friend and succeeded. She led him over to the snack table and pointed out the good snacks for him. Loki took her advice, since she knew Midgardian food a lot better than he did.

Morgan acquired snacks and a non-alcoholic drink and they were left alone by the press thanks to her privacy bubble Loki chatted with her as they ate. She told him gossip and embarrassing stories about the team. Especially Thor. She had figured out quickly that was a great way to keep Loki's attention. Loki listened intently and a mischievous gleam appeared in his eyes.

"Did Thor tell you about the time he almost got arrested?" she asked far too innocently

"No, do tell," Loki said with a grin, his eyes full of mirth and mischief.

"So I needed to go to the mall to get something for school. And dad being overprotective as ever decided that I needed to take someone with me. So Thor volunteered to go and play bodyguard. Well, we passed by a shop and the mascot came out to start dancing to advertise the shop. It was a guy in a big fuzzy monster suit. Except Thor didn't realize that it was a person and thought it was a real monster. So he threw this teenager through a wall and destroyed half the shop before he figured out what was going on. Dad paid to repair the shop, which kept Thor from getting arrested. Thor also had to work in the shop for free for a month to make up for it. Wearing the shop's uniform," she told him with a giggle at the memory.

Loki gave a genuine laugh from deep within. "Oh Norns, I wish I'd seen that!"

Morgan gave him a conspiratorial look. "I may have photographic evidence," she said far too innocently.

Loki beamed. "Excellent."

Morgan giggled. "I thought you would approve," she said warmly

"Can you show me?"

She nodded and pulled out her phone. Soon she pulled up the picture of Thor in the shop uniform with a broom and showed it to Loki. Loki burst into laughter and doubled over because he was laughing so hard. "Oh Norns, that's hilarious!"

Morgan giggled. "I'll send it to you" she promised. Stark had given Loki a phone and, of course, Morgan had added herself as a contact.

"I'd appreciate that," Loki said warmly. As soon as he figured out how, he'd make it his wallpaper.

"I have some more embarrassing pictures of Thor too," she said enticingly. She knew how to bribe a Loki to be her friend. Loki didn't even mind being so blatantly bribed. It was a good bribe.

Loki grinned. "Oh, I definitely need to see this," he said mischievously. He had blackmail material for when Thor got annoying.

Morgan laughed and spent the next hour showing him embarrassing pictures on her phone. including one of Thor in drag for a charity event Loki laughed his ass off the entire time. This was brilliant!

"Please, send me all of these!" he implored her, breathless from laughter.

Morgan nodded "I will," she agreed easily and began to send the pictures to him.

Loki beamed excitedly, looking like a far too eager mischief-cat. "Do you have these for the whole team?"

"Except Nat. You don't mess with Nat," she said sternly. You did not mess with Nat if you wanted to live.

Loki nodded sagely. "Definitely don't mess with Lady Natasha."

"She's been teaching me some hand to hand combat. Dad isn't exactly pleased, but he can't deny it's a good idea"

"That's a good thing to know," Loki said approvingly. He liked the Starklet and was of the Asgardian opinion that everyone should be able to protect themself at least until a true warrior could come to their aid.

"He's been super overprotective since.... well..." she shrugged, but it was clear, since the battle of New York. Since she'd been injured. Loki winced. That had been his fault. "It wasn't your fault" she reassured him quickly, seeing the hurt look in his eyes. "You tried to help. The healing stone..."

Loki looked up at her, surprised. "You remember that?"

"Of course I do," she said and fished a chain necklace out and showed him that the healing stone was now on the chain.

"Well, keep ahold of it for emergencies," he said softly. After the Midgardian doctors had tended to her, the healing stone couldn't heal her without reopening the wound and the Midgardians wouldn't know how it worked. It was better that she hadn't attempted it and kept the stone for a dire situation.

"I have," she replied just as softly. She'd found the stone after the battle and after her surgery, when she'd finally been allowed to come home. "I'm fine now. Thanks to this," she tapped the arc reactor. She didn't mind having it, even if she needed it to keep her alive.

"The same thing that your father has," Loki said softly. Dammit! He'd doomed her to her father's fate!

Morgan nodded "Yes. It's not your fault. Really," Loki's expression fell. It was his fault, though. "It's really alright" she tried to reassure him

Loki looked at her stern and upset now. "Lady Morgan, my attack is the reason you have a machine in your chest keeping shit from reaching your heart. If I hadn't attacked New York, you wouldn't be in this situation now."

"You only attacked New York because you were forced to. You didn't try to hurt me. you tried to keep me safe,"

Loki nodded morosely. He knew he wouldn't be viewed well by the public.

Morgan smirked "We've been doing a lot of PR on your behalf" she informed him, sensing where his thoughts had gone. "Including the movie. And we got you a really hot actor while we were at it," she said, enticing him back into conversation

"Who?" Loki asked curiously, easily drawn back into her secrets and mysteries. Annoying imp.

"Tom Hiddleston," she replied and pulled up a picture on her phone. Namely of Tom from Thor's movie in his Loki costume

Loki tilted his head. "He looks oddly similar, but he's slightly shorter." He had to find something to complain about, even if they'd made up the actor to look nearly identical to himself.

"He looks practically identical. He's been over at the tower a ton to get notes on your character,"

Loki looked at her agape. "He's been getting notes on my character?" Someone had bothered learning about him??

"He wants to do you justice" she replied. "We can watch the first movie, if you want, once we get out of here.

Loki inclined his head. "I'd like to see it."

She smirked and had the next enticing question for him. "Ready to sneak out of here?"

Loki practically sighed in relief. It was too loud and he wanted to get away from all the people. "I was born ready!"

Morgan beamed and stood. "Come on, then," she said and took his hand to sneak him out the back of the room. The back exit was hidden, but the tower was Morgan's home and it was easy for her to sneak him to the secret exit and back up to the private part of the tower away from all the crowds.

Secrets and Mischief. The Starklet was full of both. Loki found himself liking her more and more for that.
