Lydia's POV

I know my daughter very well. And I know what she would like or want. Yesterday, she was angry at the uniform. But, today, even though she didn't say it. I knew she finally thought it was okay.

I could tell she wasn't interested in the school when I mentioned it to her yesterday, but since the time I drove into the school compound, her eyes had lightened up.

'Silly girl.' I thought.

She had grown into a really beautiful young woman. It felt like it was just yesterday I held her tiny form in my hands.

Seeing Lela now, I have no regrets about the decision I made long ago.

"Mrs. Adams, are you sure you want to have this baby? I would like to see your husband as well." The doctor said.

"I am sure of my decision, doctor. A hundred percent sure. Please, doctor my husband doesn't need to know about this and moreover he's on a business trip." I explained.

"Doesn't need to know? This is a matter of life and death. Your life would be on the line, Mrs Adams."

"I know doctor. But, five years. Five years of marriage, doctor and no child. I have the opportunity now and you expect me to just let it slip? " A tear dropped from my eyes.

The doctor sighed, "It's okay Mrs. Adams. I'll try my best Mrs Adams."

"Thank you so much, doctor. This means a lot to me." I managed to smile.

"Mom!" I heard Lela call.

"Huh? What is the matter dear?"

"I was asking about the principal's office. But, you seemed lost in thoughts. Are you okay, mommy?" She asked.

"Oh. I'm fine dear." I answered.

"Okay?" She sounded unsure.

"Lela dear. Did you know that Golden Pen, has won lots of prizes and trophies for events like quizzes, debates and sports activities?" I told her. I wanted to build up her interest in the school, much more.

"Really? Well, that's cool." She answered as we went up the stairs.

"When we make a right turn from here, we will get to the principal's office." I announced when we were up the stairs. I was gasping for breath and so was Lela. It had been a long climb.

"Okay." Lela answered.

"Here we are." I announced, pointing at the inscription on a door. It read; 'Principal's office' in bold letters.

"Are you ready?" I asked her. I could see how nervous she was getting. She breathed a sigh and nodded her head. I knocked lightly on the door.

Lela's POV

I don't understand why I was getting this nervous. My heart was racing fast. Mommy must have noticed.

"Are you ready?" She asked.

'I don't know.' I thought.

I breathed a sigh and nodded my head. Mom knocked lightly on the door and I heard a tiny voice say, "Come on in."

Mom turned the knob, pushing the door open to reveal the inside of the office. Mom walked in first and I followed behind her. There was a smallish lady sitting on a swivel chair, behind the desk. She wore glasses and was dressed in a brown suit.

She looked up from the paper work she was doing. She peered at us through her glasses. Then a smile formed on her lips as she said, "Mrs Adams! Please, sit down." Her voice was so tiny, like she was being strangled and making an effort to speak.

Mom smiled back as we both sat down across the principal.

The principal had a light complexion and she was wearing a pink lipstick which could be easily mistaken as the actual color of her lips, due to how light her skin was. The principal was quite beautiful.

"You are welcome Mrs Adams." The principal said, pushing the documents she was working on, away.

"Thank you, Miss Clara."

'Huh? Miss Clara? This gorgeous Lady wasn't married? I should better shut up now.'

I decided to admire the office instead. It was painted in brown, giving the office a warm look. There was a cupboard made of glass at the right side of the office. The cupboard held lots of awards and trophies.

'Hmm. Must be what mom was talking about. Cool.' I thought.

Behind the principal was a portrait of the President of the country and the Governor of the state, hanging on the wall.

For the first time since I was in the office, I realized it was cold in here. Looking for the source, I saw an air-con at the left side of the office.

I turned my attention to the principal's table where there were files neatly arranged on the table. There was also a laptop on the table and a mug which held a few pens.

"This is my daughter, Lela." Mom introduced me. My heart had skipped a beat when I heard mommy call my name.

I simply smiled at the principal and said, "Good morning ma'am."

"Good morning dear. How are you?" She asked in that tiny voice.

"I'm fine ma'am." I answered.

"You have a very beautiful daughter, Mrs Adams. I can see she took her looks from you." The principal told mom.

I bowed my head shyly. It was a good thing I wasn't light skinned like the principal, otherwise I would have turned red like a tomato.

"Really? Thank you." Mom smiled as she glanced at me.

"Welcome to Golden Pen Academy, Lela." The principal smiled at me.

"Thank you ma'am." I replied.

"I do hope you enjoy your stay here and that you make good of the time you spend here." Miss Clara continued.

"I certainly will, ma'am."

'Huh? Where did that come from, Lela? A while ago you never wanted to be here. I thought.

Mom glanced at her wrist watch, then said, "I have to be on my way now, Miss Clara. I have an important appointment I must catch up with right now." Mom got to her feet as she finished.

"No problem, Mrs Adams. I'll just take Lela to her Classroom." Miss Clara said, getting to her feet as well. She was a stout figure when she stood.

"That would be great Miss Clara. Please ensure that she's comfortable."

"I will. You have nothing to worry about." Miss Clara smiled.

'This woman sure loves smiling. She'll be all smiling now o but, do anything bad now, you'll forget that she ever smiled. These principals, I know them very well.'

"Lela, shall we?" Miss Clara asked. I forced a smile as I got to my feet. The three of us strolled out of the office. We took the stairs we came through, down again.

"Okay Lela. Please take care." Mom said.

"Okay mom. I will." I smiled.

"Bye Lela. Goodbye, Miss Clara." Mommy turned to leave.

"Goodbye." Miss Clara and I said.

"Lets go Lela. The building we came from is the Staff's block. The building behind the Staff's block is where your classroom is." Miss Clara said as she turned towards the said building. I became nervous again as I followed behind her.

We were at the stairs of the building when a girl wearing glasses greeted the principal.
"Good morning ma." The girl greeted as she curtsied.

The frame of her glasses were round and big and she seemed to be around my age, though I was a bit taller than she was—not that I was even that tall anyways. I took in her features without making it too obvious, because  I was told that most people didn't like it when people stared at them. The girl in question looked like a snob, perhaps her upturned nose which hung below full lips, gave her that look. Like me, she had a chocolate brown skin and black hair, also held in a bun; but her curves—I must confess were nice and the uniform fitted her perfectly.

"You are in SS2 C, right?" Miss Clara asked the girl and I turned my eyes to miss Clara's small frame beside me.

"Yes ma." She answered, her speech rushed. I didn't know if she was nervous or if that was just the way she spoke.

Miss Clara smiled at the girl then, at me. "That's your class, Lela." Miss Clara said.

'I didn't like where this was going. She better not do what I think she's about to do' I thought.

"Could you please show Lela the classroom? And please ensure she is settled." Miss Clara told the girl.

'What? She did not just do that. This isn't fair. She was supposed to take me herself. She was supposed to ensure I was comfortable.'

"Okay ma." The girl answered.

"That's good. Please go with her Lela. I have a lot to do back in my office. Please bear with me." Miss Clara said as she turned and walked away.

'Jesus. This lady was harsh. She was seriously leaving me here with a total stranger.'

"Shall we?" The girl in glasses asked. I let out a sigh and followed behind her.
