Lela's POV
“You? What do you want?” I frowned. She had a stupid smirk on and she stepped into the room.
“How's your arm?” She asked and she let her eyes drop to me arm, then back to my face again.
Her hands were crossed on her chest.
'I smell trouble.'
“And what do you care?” I asked and crossed my arms on my chest as well.
“Come on. I'm just trying to be friendly.” She smirked and stepped closer to me. Her voice didn't sound friendly at all.
“Whatever. As you saw, I was on my way back to class, so please excuse me.” I said and I walked past her, but she pushed me back with her right hand, then she crossed it back on her chest. The smirk on her face had disappeared. She was glaring at me.
“Tsk tsk tsk tsk. I am not done, so don't walk out on me.” She retorted.
“Seriously Edith, what is your problem?” I snapped.
“I think you know what my problem is,” she said and I raised an eyebrow. “You are my problem Lela. I don't like you.”
'I don't need her or a prophet to tell me that.'
“That isn't a surprise Edith and don't flatter yourself so much because I don't like you either. You are too mean for my liking.”
She laughed, “quit the drama Lela. Didn't I ask you to stay away from Temi?”
'So, it's the Temi issue again.'
“And I have repeated it countless of times to you that, I have nothing to do with that boy!” I half-yelled.
“Shhh. You are so pretentious, you know,” she shook her head. “Then please explain to me what you were doing in the bathroom with him. Why did he push you?”
“Yeah, why don't you go ask him that, you are so pathetic.” I said and she gasped, “please, excuse me.” I said and pushed past her.
“You come back here.” She said with clenched teeth as she pulled me backwards, violently by my hair.
I screamed, “ayyeee. Edith let go!” I fought to pull her hands off my hair and I succeeded. I finally did what I felt like doing that morning. I gave her a hard slap across her face and her head flew side ways due to the impact of the slap. The sound of the slap echoed in the room.
She turned immediately to face me. She shot a death glare at me and her mouth gaped open. “How dare you?”
“How dare you too, how dare you pull my hair? Are you mad?” I snapped at her and gestured with my fingers.
Then, I felt my cheeks heat up. Edith had returned the favour. That does it! I'm going to teach her a very nice lesson today. I charged at her, pulling her hair and I saw many strands of her hair come out in between my fingers. I rolled my palms into fist and I punched at her back.
“Arrrgghh!” I screamed. Edith had grabbed my neck and was biting into my shoulder.
“Arrrgghh!” I heard her scream as I bit into her upper arm. I fixed my teeth there and kept biting without letting go. We kept pulling each others hair and blowing each others backs. I pushed Edith into the wall violently and she winced. I got a strong hold on her hair and dragged her by it and threw her at the nurse's table and she groaned. Some things on the table toppled over. Edith looked up and locked eyes with me. We were both panting.
Then, she charged at me again and we both flew outside the sickbay and I landed on my back in the corridor. Edith had me pressed on the floor and was strangling me. I managed to get a firm grip on her two arms and I toppled her over and pressed her on the floor. I hit her with my fist across her face and I started strangling her.
“Fight o! Fight o!” Were the words I started hearing around me. Students had gathered around us without us noticing.
“Lela! Edith! Stop this immediately.” His deep voice said behind us. I didn't need to turn around to know that he was the one.
“Let go!” I screamed and kicked the air as Temi lifted me off Edith. His hands were clapsed around my waist and he lifted me like I was paper.
“Calm down Lela! You'll get in trouble!” He yelled, but I kept wriggling in his arms. I hit him in the chest with my elbow and he groaned and let go. I pounced on Edith again and kept pulling hair and biting into her skin.
“Beat her! Lela beat her!” I heard some students yell.
'Must be her enemies.'
I smirked and got more strength to beat Edith when those students kept cheering me. I felt someone pull me again.
“Lela stop this!” He yelled. This time he had a stronger grip on my waist.
“Let go! Temi I said let go!” I yelled.
“No way.” He said.
I saw our classmates running to the scene. I glanced at Edith lying on the floor. She was so weak.
'She no get strength yet, she no go stay one place. Mumu.'
Obusor and Kevwe ran to Edith's side and helped her up. Her whole body was bruised. The three of them shot death glares at me.
“Do you want some more? Come on!” I jeered. Temi still had his hands on my waist and when Edith saw that, she gave me a look that said; this-isn't-over-yet.
“Lela!” Judith and Huoma called as they ran to my side. I pushed Temi off me and he let go and took a step backwards.
“What happened?” Judith asked.
I glanced at Edith and they followed my gaze. “I had to teach her a lesson.” I pointed at Edith with my index finger and Judith and Huoma gasped.
“You fought with Edith? You inflicted those injuries on her?” Huoma asked. I didn't like the way her voice sounded and the worried looks on their faces. I just gave their number one enemy a beating. They were supposed to be happy.
“Yes. Why the looks on your faces?”
“Well, you shouldn't have. Edith is—”
“What's going on here?” The principal asked, cutting Judith short in what she was saying. Behind the principal were a few teachers, Mr Caleb and his canes especially. That made me uneasy. I started thinking of the consequences of my actions. Maybe fighting Edith was a bad idea after all. This was the second time I was fighting in all my life and mommy and daddy had strictly warned me not to fight ever again.
'Well, you are in trouble now Lela. You should have thought about that earlier.'
The students paved way for the principal and the teachers to stand in the middle. I saw the nurse behind the teachers. This is partly her fault. If only she had returned on time.
Miss Clara glanced from Edith then to me and she asked, “why do you to look like that?”
I swallowed hard. I looked at Edith, her hair was a mess with some spots bald. I can't believe I did that. Her white shirt peeked out from under her pullover and her tie hung loosely on her neck. She had only one shoe on and bruises covered her body.
I looked myself up and I saw that my shirt peeked out from under my pullover as well, my tie hung loosely on my neck too. I had a few bruises and the ones I got from the fall had opened up.
“It's this barbaric girl ma'am. She did this to me.” Edith cried out.
'She's so devious.'
“Yes ma'am. We were here and we saw everything. Lela was pulling Judith's hair.” Obusor and Kevwe, I don't know which of them made that comment, but I wanted to pounce on them anyways. They were birds of the same feather.
“It was a case of two fighting ma'am.” Temi stepped forward to say and I turned to look at him. I wondered why he wasn't defending his girlfriend.
“Stay out of this Temi!” Miss Clara snapped at him. “Miss Theresa.” The principal called.
“Yes ma'am.” I heard the nurse answer.
'So, that's her name.'
“Take care of their wounds.” She turned to me and said in a curt manner, “see me in my office when you've sort yourself out.”
“Y-yes ma'am.” I stuttered.
'Second week in the new school Lela and you've got yourself in trouble.'
“The rest of you, back to class!” She yelled and she and the teachers walked away.
“Seriously Lela fighting with Edith was a big mistake.” Temi said from behind me.
I turned to glare at him, “I don't remember asking for your opinion. You should keep your girlfriend on a leash, you know. Now, please leave me alone.”
He opened his mouth in an attempt to say something, but closed it again. He glanced from me to Judith and Huoma and back to me again. He tucked his hands into his pockets, shrugged and walked away. He shook his head as he did.
“Hey Lela, as much as I don't want to agree with Temi, I have to. Fighting Edith was a big mistake.” Judith said and Huoma supported her by nodding her head.
“What do you mean by th—”
“Lela!” The nurse called. I turned to see Edith entering the sickbay and the nurse motioned for me to come.
“Guys, we'll talk later, okay?” I said and I turned towards the sickbay. I felt like I had made a really huge mistake by fighting with Edith. I mean, the girls were so worried about it.
'What did they mean by all they said?'
“Ouch! Easy ma'am.” I said to the nurse as she cleaned up my wound. My head was pounding due to the pulling of hair.
Nurse Theresa had a frown on and she didn't even say sorry when I winced. It seemed like she was mad at me. I glanced over to Edith and another nurse was tending to her wounds. I didn't see this nurse before. Edith looked up to see me looking at her and she glared at me. Her face was swollen, it didn't seem like the flawless face anymore. I smirked.
“Ouch!” I turned back to nurse Theresa, “Easy ma'am, I'm human.”
“You should have thought about that before engaging in a fight. I thought you were injured and I asked you to wait for me, didn't I?” She snapped at me and I understood why she had a frown on. She was upset with me.
“Jeez. Sorry ma'am, and I did wait for you. The fight wasn't my fault at all. Edith was the one who came here.” I explained.
“Don't you call my name. Just mind your business.” Edith retorted.
“I do mind my business, but you don't. If you had, we wouldn't be in this mess!” I yelled.
“Enough!” Nurse Theresa ordered. “I've finished dressing your wounds Lela, so you can go to the principal now.”
My heart skipped a beat at the mention of the principal. “Thank you ma'am.” I said and I stood up and did the best I could to fix my hair and clothes.
“Good bye Lela. See you around.” Nurse Theresa said when I was about walking out the door.
“See me around? You are not praying for me to get hurt again, are you?” I grinned.
“Not at all,” she laughed. “Wouldn't you pay me a visit without being injured or sick first?” She teased.
“I would,” I smiled., “Good bye ma'am.” With that I left the sickbay and strolled to the staff's block and I climbed up the stairs.
'Dear lord, please save me.'
I knocked lightly on the door of the principal's office.
“Come in.” She answered and I turned the knob and walked in. She looked up and immediately she saw me, a frown creased her face.
“Y-you wanted to see me ma'am?” I asked, scared of what the outcome of this meeting would be.
“Yes, I did!” She snapped, “and I am very disappointed at you. Fighting?”
“I'm sorry ma'am, but I can explain. Just let me explain.” I pleaded.
“What can you explain? How you fought? How you almost killed someone? How you pulled her hair and almost made her bald?” She retorted.
“Ma'am, like Temi said, it's a case of two fighting. I am also a victim here.” I cried out.
“You leave Temi out of this. You made the mistake, so you should carry it without getting others involved!”
“But ma'am—”
“No buts Lela. I have reached a decision.” She said and I held my breath. “You'll be suspended for a week.” She said it so calmly.
“What?!”
