Fifteen

Zena punched the speed dial on her phone. Her dad made sure she had free long distance anywhere in the states and she was taking advantage right away. Sara should still be up, they usually said goodnight at around eleven, so even though she was wiped out, she hoped her BFF was still up. Then she remembered the time difference, even though it was ten o'clock it was two hours earlier in Denver.

"Zee, you got your phone back. What did you have to do?"

Sara's familiar voice brought tears to her eyes. She grabbed a tissue and blew her nose before she answered the question.

"Find my twin sister."

Let Sara absorb that one.

"Wait a minute. You don't have a twin, you're an only child."

"Get your lap top up and join my Zoom. I'll prove it to you." Zena texted Lace as she talked.

Putting Sara on speaker she flipped her own laptop open and set up a Zoom conference so the three of them could talk.

Three squares appeared and Sara's eyes popped when she figured it out.

"Shit, you do have a twin. If you didn't have names on, I wouldn't know who's who."

"Hi Sara. I'm Lacey or Lace, because if you're Zee's friend you're mine too. She trusts you with everything from what she's told me."

"The first day of school must have been a real eye opener," Sara said.

Zee groaned. "You have no idea, after school was even worse. We found out a lot of stuff all at once. I've sent you an email with the details, but the best thing is Percy."

Lacey made a face, and started to sing, "Percy and Zena sitting a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g."

"Well he did kiss my hand when he introduced himself to me, just before he tripped going up the steps onto the stage," Zee admitted.

Sara and Lacey both broke out laughing.

"He did save himself by grabbing the rail," Zee continued. "Our big problem is Anya though. The girl has out for both of us."

"What? You don't know what to do with a bully?" Sara teased her half seriously.

"I would if it was one on one. I mean I know I was bad, but I never had you hold anyone down, or threatened anyone with violence. Mostly I just whined until I got what I wanted." Zee said. She lifted her arm so the camera could see her scratches. "And that's why Mom changed her will, so I had to move into Pettigrew mansion."

"Anya is escalating. She used to just shove me, or make nasty comments, but she and her side kicks, Molly and Izzy are getting worse. She was threating to cut Zee's ponytail off." Lacey said.

"Man, that sucks." Sara shook her head. "Are they going to charge her with assault?"

"My Dad's working on that, and the restraining order," Lacey explained. "He's a lawyer."

They took turns talking to Sara and filling her in on all they'd discovered about their real parents and why they were adopted and separated. They ended up inviting Sara to come visit for Halloween. Zee wanted her there for the party.

They discussed ways to get Zee's dad to give permission for the party and how to keep Anya from crashing it. An hour later, Sara said goodbye when she caught both twins yawning.

"Bedtime you two. Eleven was always cut off for us before, and you need to be on your toes. Stay together or keep your guys around. Percy sounds like a great person, and I like what you told me about Terry, Lace. I'll see what I can find out about the investigation into your mother's crash. They have the pieces of her jet in one of the hangers close to where Mom works. I've got your back, Zee. Always."

Zee shut everything down after sending the email she'd typed up while they were talking. She sent a copy to Lace too, glad to think they could be friends. Having a sister was hard to get used to, let alone one who looked exactly like her. And still, in spite of the surprise, she felt like a little something that had been missing in her life was suddenly there.

A beep on her phone had her looking to see who would be trying to contact her this late at night. It was a text message from her Dad, reminding her to get some sleep. He'd been good about letting her disappear into her room. Nice of him to give her some space to figure everything out. Talking to Sara was exactly what she needed.

Pulling on her sleep tee, she bundled into her robe and wandered down the hall to her dad's suite. Knocking on the door, she called out, "Dad? Can I come in?"

"Sure." He sounded as tired as she felt.

"Are you sure Theodore Pettigrew is still in prison?"

"Don't even worry about that. I'm sure he is. Considering the threats, he made, and his diagnosis as a psychopath, guards are very careful around him." Matt assured his daughter.

Creaks groaned over their head, and they watched the hanging lamp in the corner behind the TV sway and slowly stop.

Shivers crawled down Zena's neck as her father jumped out of his easy chair.

"You saw that too?" He kept his eyes on the lamp.

Zena nodded. "That's the first time I've seen anything move though. I swear I've heard someone groaning though, especially when I'm in my bathroom. There's a vent in there and all sorts of strange things come through it. I can hear the Chicarro's when they're talking in the kitchen. And I keep hearing another voice. I'm not sure who it is."

"Okay, then I'm not going crazy." Her dad's blue eyes narrowed as he considered her statement.

"Mama Rosa thinks we have a ghost. Probably great grandmother Pettigrew."

"That wasn't a ghost. That's someone up there, and we're going to go find out who." Matt said.

"I don't think we can. You ask Papa Juan tomorrow. I think the door that leads to the stairs to the attic is locked. It's at the end of the hall beside my room where the back stairs come up from the kitchen."

"You've been exploring?"

"Yeah, a little bit when we were moving in." Zee knew her curiosity was a problem at times.

"We'll tackle it together on the weekend."

"Can Lace come too?"

"I think she'll be up here anyway. Papa Juan has her as a gardening assistant. She takes care of all the flowers. You should help her there, I'll make sure you get paid too, and then when that's done, we'll head upstairs to figure out what's in the attic."

"Look, there it goes again," Zee pointed toward the swaying glass lamp shade.

"That's odd. I think I'll have a look tomorrow while you're in school. It could be something quite simple."

"I'd love to learn about the flowers, Dad. I was going to ask about helping with them." Zee kept her eyes on the light.

"You always did have a touch with the house plants and our landscaping. It's the one thing we never had to fight with you about."

Zee decided to let her father figure out what was up in the attic and changed the subject. "Dad, was I really getting to be a brat? I missed Mom so much when she was away flying, and you weren't around hardly at all either."

"Yeah you were. And now you're questioning everything you know about yourself, because nothing about your life is the same. I'm not going to be as hard on you as I was at first. I knew James and Deanne were in a small town somewhere in New Hampshire, but I never dreamed they settled right back in Elise's hometown. His family is from closer to the New York state line. I'm sorry you have to go through this now." Matt put an arm around her shoulders.

"Sara said no matter what, you're still my dad. I still don't understand how Mom willed the mansion to me."

"I'll get Deanne to explain it to you. She's the one who nullified any claim Theodore has to the estate because of the murders he committed. The only way for him to inherit now, is if something happens to you and Lacey. We're going to make sure it doesn't happen." He kissed her forehead, like he used to when she was little.

"You'll always be my little girl. Sara's right. I'll always be your Dad."

"Love you Dad." Zee kissed his cheek. "I'm going to try and sleep. Even if we have a ghost."
