Prologue

The bright striking line of light illuminated the moonless evening. The smell of the thunder hanged in the air. The night seemed to sound nothing but water as the chilly rain drizzled on the roofs and swept clean the empty sidewalks.

"God, please make the rain louder, in the name of the Father, of the Son, of the Holy Spirit. Amen," her younger sister on the opposite bed prayed before she turned her lamp off. The room filled nothing but a warm light coming from his lamp which he refused to turned off. A struck of lightning lightened the place for a second. With that short moment, he saw his sister's eyes steadily looking at him.

"What?" he asked. She just shook her head and didn't utter anything. She pulled her duvet, covered her face and went to sleep. "Freak," he said under his breath.

It was already midnight yet he's still wide awake. It seemed like he was adjusting at their first night at their new bungalow house that stood at the corner of the street. He already spent hours changing his position in bed but it seemed he couldn't find a comfortable one. He ended facing the window at the right side of their room. He listened to the sound of the lamenting weep of the tormented sky. A minute after, the rain had stop and a deafening silence concealed the place.

He was taken aback when he heard her sister's silent weep. He was about to look at his back when the window shuddered. The curtain swayed slowly. His skin prickled knowing the wind didn't come from outside the room. He did nothing. A slow tapping sound of the glass broke the silence. It continued few seconds until the tapping sound got heavier and faster and the shaking of window got disturbing.

As a ten-year old kid, he was afraid of what they believed monsters yet he was brave too to prove otherwise. He got up his bed and went to the window. He held the curtain tightly and took a deep breath before finally pushed away the drapes.

The flickering lamp post across the road caught his attention—a man was standing. He rubbed his eyes, the man was gone. He then noticed the empty playground across the house.

The sudden calmness was replaced by the shrilling sound of the swing swaying in the chilling wind, the screeching sound of the slow spinning roundabouts, the shrieking sound of the seesaw moving up and down. The gusting wind sent shivers on his skin as he watched the life across the empty place. A life that wasn't supposed to be there.

The light flickered, three men were standing.

The light flickered, all their empty hallowed eyes were looking at him.

The light flickered, they were standing in front of him.

The lightning struck, all of them were smiling.
