Voice
Set during Animaestro. I won't say any more. Just read.
Currently, Marinette was in the cinema at the premier of the animated movie based on her hero persona and her great partner, Chat Noir.
She was sitting next to Adrien.
Who was the voice actor for Chat Noir.
At this moment she couldn't feel happier.
But even with Adrien sitting next to her, her main focus was actually on the film that was starting on front of her. Because despite being Ladybug, she had no idea what had been put into the movie. So she was intrigued at how M.Thomas had perceived their lives. If it was even accurate (she secretly hoped it wasn't, because that would give her away to Hawkmoth). If it was completely different. If it was even somewhat reminiscent of her time as Ladybug.
She settled into her comfy chair and snuck a glance at the person next to her who, surprisingly was looking at her with a smile on his face (even though Kagami was right next to him. Shouldn't he be focusing on her?).
He leaned in, causing Marinette to suck her breath in and he brought a hand to cup his face, whispering to her, "I hope you enjoy my voice acting Mari."
She nodded quickly and giggled a bit awkwardly, "O-of course Adrien. You have a vice-I-I mean nice voice. I-I'm sure you will do great," and as if to make a point, she gave him two thumbs up and smiled sincerely up at him.
His smile grew a bit wider at the compliment and she could see the light flush in his face, even with just the lights from the movie starting, "Thanks Marinette," and she thought he would turn back to the movie- which was currently going through the totally rock and roll theme song sung by Jagged Stone- but he leaned in closer, causing her to blush furiously at the small distance between them, "And I just wanted to say, I think you look pretty cute today."
Her jaw dropped when he sent a very flirtatious (and no, she was not mistaking it) wink in her direction.
Truth to be told, she herself knew how cuye she looked in the outfit. She was wearing, what was essentially a maid outfit due to her role in helping her parents out today. Though she had already removed the apron, her dress still had her signature white, light pink and grey-black colours but it was something she never usually wore. On top of that, she had decided to put her hair in a bun, though it was more for convenience than anything else. She did secretly wish that Adrien would say something about her change in style for the day. But she didn't expect him to be so straightforward.
She knew she was a blushing mess.
It did, however, really remind her of the way Chat Noir flirted with her, so mustering up her own Ladybug courage, she decided to retort with, "Well you don't look so bad yourself," and winked back.
The giggle that she let out when he practically let out the same expression she had, was totally, definitely an accident.
Someone at that moment decided to make a big shushing sound from behind them, so she stifled her giggles at Adrien's flustered face and turned her attention back to the movie.
About an hour later
There was something...
Something about Adrien's voice that made the animated Chat Noir seem so realistic. Like he was there speaking to her directly.
And even though the team had made the decision to make his love interest Rena Rouge (which she actually thought was a really dumb decision especially when there were so many videos of him flirting with her- and on occasion her flirting back(and yes she's admitting it!)), she realised that a lot of the lines he had said to Rena were quite similar, or even identical to the things Chat had said to her.
The way he said them, even moreso.
It was the way his voice went a bit higher when he made a really flirty remark. How his tone of voice seemed so pleased when he made a pun, even if it wasn't that funny. She could just imagine he was right on front of her, his hand on his chin as he waggled his eyebrows in her direction. And when his character was being a bit more serious, it was how his voiced dropped a little, focused on the task at hand.
But the biggest thing was the way he called his power, his cataclysm. She'd heard it enough times to be able to recognise it perfectly. She knew that when the real Chat said it, there was almost always this distinctive flare in his voice, that showed how he relished in its power and the fact that he was the only one who could weild it. It showed how he was proud of having the responsibility of his power. How he knew that when he called his power, he had the will to destroy anything he wanted, and he chose to use it to help her.
It was something she admired a lot about him.
Because she knew what it was like to hold immense power. To want to use it for anything other than good. She knew the stress of carrying its burdens, knowing that one wrong move could cause her to drop them. But while she had the miraculous of creation, he had destruction. He had the miraculous that was more likely to be used for personal gain and evil intent. But Chat Noir never used it that way, even when he could.
Thinking about that made her more grateful for her partner.
Her thoughts were interrupted by his voice again. At this point, her eyes had been cast to the floor below them as they became out of focus and it became clear she wasn't paying attention. But when his voice started, all of her attention was snapped onto the big screen, her eyes furrowed in concentration as the thought that it was too much of a coincidence that their voices were the same, crept through her head.
Because she was so distracted she didn't realise how Adrien had been looking at her with a concerned look on his face. Because to him, it seemed like she looked dissapointed and almost a bit angry.
Did she not like his voice acting?
Did she not like the movie?
Well, he could sort of understand the second one because he didn't really like how in this movie, his character- which was supposed to reflect his hero self- was all over Rena Rouge (especially when he was suspecting that there was something between Rena and Carapace). He was in love with Ladybug and the only other person he would even admit to flirting with, was the girl right next to him. And he wasn't talking about Kagami (spending time with her was just to appease his father).
Speaking of, he was getting worried about Marinette's reaction.
He shook her shoulder and bit the inside of his lip when she looked at him wide eyed and her hands shaking in her lap.
"Are you okay Marinette?" He asked.
She closed her eyes and shook her head a bit before taking a deep breath, "I- uh. I feel a bit stuffy. I think- I think I need some fresh air."
"Now?" His eyebrow raised, "Do you want a doctor instead?"
"No!" She shouted out, causing people around her to shush her and Kagami to glare at her slightly (Remember this is before Mari and 'Gami are friends), "Sorry. Sorry. I'm so sorry," she muttered apologies to them.
Adrien raised a soothing hand to her own arm and, although she jumped at his touch, she relaxed into it quickly and her breathing calmed down a bit.
"How about I help you get out and go somewhere where there's fresh air?" He gave her a gentle smile.
"But what about- what about everyone else? If your father finds out-"
He lifted a finger to her lip and cut her off, "I'll say it was me who was feeling uneasy and I asked you to help me go somewhere where I could be sick away from the public eye. That will placate him enough."
She pondered for a moment and inhaled deeply, "Okay."
"Okay?" He questioned, just to make sure she was certain.
She gave him a small but assuring smile, "Okay."
(I didn't mean to but I guess I made a reference to The Fault In Our Stars, which BTW one of my favourite books ever. I read it in a day and cried all night. TT)
He turned to Kagami quickly and whispered to her, "I'm feeling a bit sick so Mari and I are going to get some fresh air."
Her eyebrow quirked up at the mention of the other girl but, luckily, she wasn't able to hear their chattering due to the loud noise of the movie, so the doubt quickly fell. Especially when she saw his face was sullen (though she had mistaken his worry for Marinette with him actually looking sick).
"Why don't I go with you instead? We did come here together, did we not?"
He quickly glanced at Marinette and shook his head vigorously, "No, No. Stay here with your mother. Marinette will take good care of me, I promise," in his head, it was more that the promise was that he would take good care of her, "Can you tell Gorilla not to follow me. We will stay in the building."
She just nodded curtly in response.
Soon, Marinette and Adrien found their way out of the cinema, courtesy of his bodyguard who helped them without much fuss, before going back in to view the film (Adrien knew he was secretly eager to watch it.)
What he didn't expect was for Marinette to grab his hand and start dragging him up the stairs towards the roof, like she wanted to urgently tell him something. But he diligently followed her, despite his confusion.
Once they were on the roof, she let go of him and he frowned slightly at the warmth her hand had given him.
She started pacing and her hands kept on moving in different ways that he couldn't decipher, whilst she kept on murmuring to herself, "Okay... their voices are... does it mean....yes-NO! But... that means... Noir- Adrie- but....means I ki- oh my... This is a disaster!... Fu is going to kill... or worse...take my earrings... what am I going to dooooo!" She cried out as she sunk yo the floor and placed her head between her legs rather dramatically.
"Uhh," Adrien started, "Marinette? Everything okay there?"
He took a step back when she suddenly looked up and glared at him. He could almost see the smoke coming out of her nose. He jumped slightly when she stood up abruptly and made her way on front of him. She pointed her finger at him menacingly. It was safe to say he felt threatened.
"You! You moronic idiot. You stupid Cat!"
"Wha-uh-what? Cat? Where's the cat?" He pretended to look around hoping for his life that there was an actual cat nearby.
Shit.
"Did you seriously think that no one would have figured you out if you decided to voice your own self?"
SHIT!
He raised his hands up in defence but he knew his panicked expression probably gave it away, "I have no idea what you are talking about," he feigned confusion.
"Oh my god!" Her own hands went up in exasperation, "Don't deny it Adrien. I know you're Chat Noir."
"No I'm not," But his higher pitch caused her to deadpan.
"Do you know that there are no two voices that are exactly alike? And besides," Her eyes flicked to his hand which held the ring and he scrunched his face at the incriminating evidence.
Stupid miraculous!
His face morphed into a pout, and Marinette thought it looked a lot like the one time it was raining and Chat slipped on a rooftop and fell on his back. That time, she had laughed in his face and made a joke about cats landing on their feet (before helping him up), which caused him to sulk for the rest of their patrol.
"Okay fine. I am him. Are you happy now? I'm Chat Noir. Is this why you wanted to get out? Are you disappointed that it's just me? Is that why you looked so mad earlier?"
"What? Adrien. Dissapointed? Never," his shoulders became more relaxed but his mind was going crazy, "Mad? Okay, maybe a bit. But did you not think that someone may be able to recognise your voice?"
"Well not many people know my voice like Ladybug and apparently you do. I guess it's because we've been spending more time together recently, huh?" His face became alarmed again.
"Not just recently," she murmured l, though he didn't hear her, "But you still have to be more careful."
She looked up and realised he was looking really nervous and she was about to question it when he gasped out, "Ladybug! What am I gonna tell her?"
She snorted, trying to cover her laughter as he seemed to be scared of the predicament.
"Marinette," he whined, "You won't be laughing when I don't come into school next Monday because I've been tied to the Eiffel Tower by Ladybug for giving away my secret," he rubbed his eyes with one hand morosely, "That is, if she doesn't murder me and hide my body in the catacombs. Then you'll never see me again. You'regoing to regret laughing when you never see me again."
At that moment Plagg flew out from wherever he had been and rolled his eyes at his holder, "Stop panicking kitten. She won't murder you. And if she even tries, I'll stop her myself."
Marinette chuckled at Plagg's protectiveness over his holder and Adrien was momentarily surprised that she didn't even seem shocked to see him. He had expected her to scream and hide behind him like a princess hiding behind her Knight from the big bad dragon in a cheesy fairytale novel.
She, instead, scratched his chin like it was nothing.
"He's right Adrien," she turned her attention back to him, though she was still absentmindedly scratching Plagg who had decided to lay in her palm, "I'm not going to kill you and leave your remains in the creepiest place in Paris. Though," her attention wavered for a few seconds, "it might become second once we we find out what Hawkmoth's lair looks like."
"......."
"......."
"You're Ladybug, aren't you?"
"Yup."
"No wonder you know my voice well."
"Yup."
"Are still mad at me?"
She pointed her finger at her chin and pretended to think for a second before raising her hands to gesture it was half and half.
"You're going to string me to the Eiffel Tower aren't you?"
"Depends Kitty. If I'm still mad at you by the time we have scheduled patrol I might do just that."
"So," he started rocking on his feet back and forth, his face sheepish and his hands clamped around each other nervously, "Is there anything I can do to stop you from being mad at me?"
She twirled a strand of her hair and looked at him timidly, though he could still see the teasing glint in her eyes, "Well Chaton... I think a kiss may do the trick."
(He definitely did not trip over air when she said that.)
After he collected himself, he smirked and took a step forward, "Hmm, I'm not sure M'lady. I don't think one kiss would be enough. I've heard that Ladybug has quite the temper."
Even though Marinette knew this was her crush, Adrien, him being so Chat-like in his civilian form caused her to lose any of the shyness and mirror is smirk, "Oh?"
He leaned in and cupped her face, their breaths causing the air around them to feel hotter. Their lips were so close, but neither of them decided to make a move just yet, if only to build the simmering tension between them.
"I will need to give her more than one kiss if I don't want her to be mad anymore," ironically, the warmth she felt from his whisper made her shiver.
"Then what are you waiting for? Kiss me," she whispered back.
And that was all it took for the both of them to close the gap between their lips and make the most out of the time they had before the movie finished.
(Later, Adrien and Marinette would watch the movie at her house instead of going to patrol, because he had his own copy and she wanted to watch the rest. And despite the romance aspect of it being totally off, it was still a wonderful adaptation of the wonder that was Ladybug and Chat Noir. Especially seeing as Chat Noir voiced himself. Maybe next time, Ladybug and Chat Noir could go to the studio and do it properly.)
Happy new year.
This oneshot was just a thought that I had because I was like, "What if Marinette realised that Adrien's voice sounded too much like Chat when he was voice acting the animated version of himself? If she noticed it instead of focusing so much on Adrien, she would surely realise it was the same voice. Because who else would know Chat Noir's voice?"
I'm not sure if anyone has done this before but I wanted to try it out.
Bug out lovelies 😘.
