soulmate song

Quick side note: Right when I finished writing this one-shot is when I realized that you specifically mentioned a Marichat soulmate Au...
And guess what? I'd written this in adrienette thinking the whole time that's what your comment said.
Oops? I guess?
I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
Marinette lives in a world where soulmates aren't found attached to the other end of a red string. They're found through a song.
So when she suddenly can't get a certain song out of her head one night, and she hears a handsome, blonde pianist, playing that exact same song through her apartment wall... well... you can't blame her for believing he's her soulmate.
_______________________________
At first, Marinette thought she was going completely insane.
It started earlier that morning when she woke up at five, hoping to be on time in her parents bakery by six. Almost every morning, she was so exhausted that she would have to fight herself to get out of bed, and she usually needed her cup of coffee before she could talk to anyone, let alone function.
But when she first woke up that morning, Marinette woke up with an urge to hum something.
And now, she couldn't stop humming.
Of course, it wasn't odd that she was humming. Humming tunes was normal. The problem was what she had stuck in her head that she couldn't stop humming.
It was a classical song. Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca to be specific. And Marinette couldn't figure out why!
She never listened to classical music on a regular. As a matter of fact, she hadn't even heard that song being played at all recently.
So why on earth was it stuck in her head?
She tried to figure that out even as she stood and worked at the cashier almost all day, serving customers with half of her mind somewhere else. Most of the regulars must've known that she was distracted anyways.
It wasn't that hard to tell when she accidentally spilled Old Lady Martha's coffee all over her table.
"Oh!" Marinette whipped out a few napkins from the pocket of her apron, frowning guiltily when she realized how unprofessional she'd just been. "I'm so sorry about this!"
As she began to dry the area, she noticed from the corner of her eye the soft smile Old Lady Martha had to offer her. "No need to worry, dear. Accidents happen." She said softly, "And besides, I can't blame you. After all, it seems as if your soulmate song has got you a bit preoccupied."
Marinette almost choked on her own salvia... and almost knocked over the rest of whatever was left of Old Lady Martha's coffee.
"What?" The ravenette sputtered, "Did you just say my soulmate song?"
"Yes," she said sweetly, "You seem to have an important song stuck in your head, no?"
The ravenette simply pressed her lips together. At first, Marinette wanted to ask the old woman how she knew that, but then she realized it was probably blatantly obvious, considering she couldn't stop humming it.
"Is that why I can't get it out of my head?" Marinette asked rather quietly as she finished wiping away the mess she had created.
Martha hummed thoughtfully, "It can be a bit frustrating, can't it?"
"It can," Marinette agreed with a nod. "Not that I'm not happy, now that I have my song, but how long will it last until I find my soulmate?"
"That depends," Old Lady Martha gestured to the empty seat in front of her, and reluctantly, Marinette took a seat. "For me, it took two weeks. But when I finally found my soulmate, everything changed."
"Two weeks?" Marinette's eyes went wide. "I don't know if I can last that long."
Martha chuckled softly, "When did your song come to you dear?"
Marinette sighed, almost sounding defeated, as she slouched her shoulders. "Earlier this morning. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, or humming it. Gods, I cannot stop humming it."
"I understand the feeling, dearie," Martha said, "But patience yields focus, child. In order to find your soulmate, you have to remain patient. You'll find them faster that way."
Old Lady Martha's advice was probably the best advice Marinette had received by far, and she held onto those three words for the rest of the day as she worked.
Patience yields focus.
And somehow, while she continually concentrated on those words, her song didn't bother her or distract her for the rest of the day.
Patience yields focus.
Even as she laid down in her bed that night, she felt more at peace. The song was still there, but in the back of her mind, playing like a dull lullaby.
If anything, it was starting to make her feel sleepy.
Marinette closed her eyes. She could faintly hear her song still playing, which now, when she heard it, caused a smile to pull at her lips.
The song was... peaceful...
Until it wasn't.
Marinette's eyes shot open when her song suddenly got louder. At first, she thought it was part of a dream... until she realized she was wide awake. But the song in her head wasn't what was echoing so loud, it was someone else humming her song.
And not just humming...
Someone was humming her song, and playing it quite elegantly on the piano.
Marinette slowly threw her legs over the edge of her bed, slipped on her slippers, and stood to her feet. She marched over towards where her dresser was, which was up against the far right wall of her bedroom.
Hesitantly, she placed her hands on the wall and pressed her ear against it.
Sure enough, she could hear the song more clearly. Whoever was on the other side of this wall was currently playing her song on the piano.
And my could they play.
She wasn't sure how long she simply stood there, her cheek pressed against the wall, as she listened to her neighbor play their song. The way her soulmate's fingers seemed to move so effortlessly along the keys made her wonder how long he'd been playing.
Marinette worried at her lower lip. She really wanted to meet him. She glanced over at her alarm clock, which blinked in red numbers twelve forty-seven.
It was late... but her soulmate seemed to be wide awake anyway. So she was sure he wouldn't mind.
Reaching for her robe, Marinette quickly slipped her arms into the warm sleeves and quickly pulled her hair up into a messy bun.
She'd made up her mind.
She was going to meet her mysterious, late-night, piano-playing soulmate.
And although she was extremely excited, Marinette opened her front door and shut it very softly behind her, carefully, to make sure that she didn't accidentally wake up any of her other neighbors, (especially the old, grumpy couple who lived in the room right across from her.) She tiptoed her way over to his door, which only took literal seconds to get to, considering his apartment happened to be right next to hers.
Coincidence? She wasn't sure.
Hesitantly, Marinette lifted her shaking fist to his door and softly knocked.
At first, she didn't think he'd heard it, and her anxiety began to toy with her mind, trying to convince her that she hadn't knocked loud enough. But just when she was about to knock again, she'd heard the piano stop.
A second later, she heard soft footsteps approaching the door.
Marinette held her breath as the door slowly opened.

At first, Adrien thought he was hearing things.
It was only natural for him to assume that he could be possibly losing his mind, considering he'd had Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca stuck in his head since the second he woke up that morning. And he rarely played classical pieces anymore. But he couldn't stop thinking about the song, humming it, or even preventing his fingers from playing it.
And it was driving him insane.
For ten minutes straight, Adrien stared at himself in the mirror before he headed off for work, forcing himself to think of anything but the song.
But somehow, the song always seemed to be right in the front of his brain; in the center of all his thoughts.
And he didn't understand why.
"You seem distracted today, Adrien," his makeup artist commented as she dabbed his cheekbones lightly, "Something on your mind?"
He wanted to laugh at that. "Yeah, you could say that."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Adrien pressed his lips together. His makeup artist, Felicity, was someone that he considered his friend and was a great person to seek advice from. He'd learned that over the years. If there was anyone he could choose to confide into, it would be her.
Adrien sighed, defeated, "Well... this might sound a little weird, but the truth is, I've had this song stuck in my head all day, and it's driving me absolutely insane! It's almost like an itch I can't reach."
Felicity seemed to brighten up, and he could've sworn even her eyes twinkled. "Oh!" She giggled, "You found your soulmate song!"
"My what?" Adrien shot her a weird look.
"Your soulmate song," she said softly, and then shot him a weird look of her own when she realized he still wore a very confused expression on his face. "Haven't you heard about the whole 'soulmate song' thing?"
Adrien shook his head. "I can't say that I have." He admitted.
Felicity pulled her makeup brush away from his cheek and pouted. He watched her curiously as she moved away from him, and his brows rose confusingly when she pulled up a chair.
"Your soulmate song is a song that connects you to your soulmate," she began to explain as she turned the chair around so that she could lean her arms over the back of the chair. When she sat down, she peered up at him with a grin. "The song doesn't go away until you find your soulmate."
"Ugh, well that sucks," Adrien groaned, "That means this song could be stuck in my head for weeks, or months..." he suddenly gasped, "Or years."
Felicity giggled, "Oh, don't be so dramatic. I'm sure your soulmate isn't too happy about listening to a song all day either."
"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"
Felicity's smile turned a bit wry. "Well, I'm not sure. Something like this would usually excite someone."
"Excite?" Adrien scoffed. He took a good looks around the dressing room that they were currently in. His dressing room. "If you haven't noticed, I don't exactly have time for dating or soulmates. My life is already pretty busy."
"Whether you think you have time or not, your soulmate still exists. You can't just ignore it and push it away."
"Oh really?" Adrien raised a brow. He wouldn't back down from a challenge. "I guess we'll see about that."
Felicity grimaced, "Adrien, that's not fair. Especially for the girl."
"Life isn't fair, Felicity."
"How do you think she'll feel once she finds out that her own soulmate wants nothing to do with her?"
Adrien turned his gaze away from her. Wording it like that just made him seem like a monster. It wasn't that he wanted to purposely hurt his soulmate, because he really didn't. Adrien was sure the girl was amazing. She was probably fun to be around too. But he just didn't have the time.
He didn't have that luxury.
And besides, how was it right for anything (or anyone) to push him into being into something that he might not be ready for? What if he wasn't ready to date? Or what if he couldn't see himself in a relationship right now?
Was he supposed to just put a ring on this girl's finger the moment he met her simply because they were soulmates?
And anyways... even if this whole soulmate song was true, Adrien was currently talking to someone else, who he was genuinely interested in. He may not be ready for dating, but he wasn't opposed to getting to know people.
Adrien scrunched up his nose, suddenly feeling disgusted– not just in himself, but also with this entire situation. "I'm sorry. I know I sound cruel, and I really mean it when I say that I don't want to hurt some girl I've never even met, but this whole soulmate thing... I just... don't think it's for me."
Felicity's lips pulled into a frown. He knew that his words disappointed her, but then again, he was tired of living his life based on what other people thought or felt. It was his life, after all, no one else's. He watched as she silently stood to her feet again and moved the chair back to where she'd gotten it.
And when her brush returned to gently finish the highlights on his cheekbones, he heard her whisper, "The poor girl is going to be devastated, Adrien."
Those words did nothing to ease his conscience, especially when he was forced to go back out in front of the photographer, model like he actually enjoyed it, and smile when he wasn't really feeling it. Adrien was used to putting up a front when it came to modeling.
But in this instance, he suddenly felt too guilty to pretend.
He was sent home shortly afterwards when his photographer got too annoyed to handle the sudden gloomy attitude Adrien radiated.
His father would definitely hear of this, and most likely talk off his son's ear for being 'unprofessional', but Adrien really didn't care. If it wasn't because his last name was Agreste, you wouldn't catch him in front of another camera.
Adrien threw himself onto his bed that night, sprawled out like a starfish, one might say. He was too exhausted to lift his face from his pillow, even while his phone chimed multiples times in a row on his nightstand.
Adrien didn't have to look over to know who it was trying to reach him. Gabriel was probably furious.
He groaned into his pillow. Ever since he'd spoken with Felicity about this so called 'soulmate song', the song in his head had gotten louder, especially when he'd audibly made it clear that he was going to be ignoring it and do his own thing. Apparently, the song didn't like that idea though, because it was blaring like a siren in his head, almost as if it taunting him. Reminding him that he couldn't escape his so called 'destiny'.
Again, he groaned into his pillow. But it sounded more like a whine.
This song was driving him crazy.
Adrien flipped over onto his back, helplessly staring up at the ceiling. This didn't seem fair. This idea that some odd force got to choose who he would spend the rest of his life with sounded bizarre. He titled his head to the side and stared at his phone, which seemed to be quiet now. He found himself reaching over for the device and clicking on a certain someone's contact.
When the blonde brought his phone up to his ear, and it began ringing, a part of him felt guilty. Felicity had told him that he would be hurting his so called future wife, and he had told her that he didn't have time for relationships, but here he was calling up a girl.
A girl who was his friend. But a girl that he hoped to be more than just friends with someday.
He found himself smiling the moment she answered his call. "Hey, Adrien."
"Hey Kagami," he said a little breathlessly, his smile wide. "Sorry it's late, but I just wanted to hear your voice."
He could hear the smile in her voice as she said, "That's sweet, Adrien." And he knew that she genuinely meant it. "And don't worry about the time. I actually had you on my mind."
"You did?" He found himself asking, his voice rising an octave higher.
"Yeah," she said, "I actually wanted to talk to you about something."
Suddenly, her voice didn't sound so happy or smiley anymore, and somehow that made the ball in his stomach drop. "What's up?" He asked hesitantly.
"Well..." she said, and she sounded just as hesitant. "...I wanted to tell you that I found my soulmate song."
The moment he heard those words leave her lips, Adrien's mood immediately fell. Not her too. "Don't tell me you believe in that too?"
"Of course I do," Kagami responded, if not a bit defensively, "Don't you?"
"No," Maybe he said that out of stubbornness, but he wasn't too sure. "It just doesn't seem fair to me... not being able to choose for yourself."
"I find it rather convenient," Kagami admitted, "It means we don't have to worry about accidentally making the wrong choice."
Adrien wasn't sure how he felt about that. The wrong choice; what was that even supposed to mean? Was Kagami insinuating that she was making the wrong choice by talking to him?
He didn't want to believe that. "So... what? Do we have the same soulmate song or not?"
He knew his voice sounded agitated; annoyed. Kagami probably picked up on it right away. If anything, he was just so tired of people making decisions for him. For once, he wanted to make his own decisions.
"No, we don't." If it wasn't because he was paying close attention, he probably wouldn't have heard her say it.
"How do you know?"
He heard Kagami exhale slowly, and somewhat shakily, "Because I met my soulmate today."
Adrien's breath audibly hitched. There was no way to hide the sudden hurt and disappointment he felt. "Are you being serious?"
"Why would I make that up?" Kagami shot him with instead.
"So, what? You two have a matching song and suddenly I mean nothing to you?"
"You know that's not what I meant." Kagami said sternly, and he knew his words had hurt her. He knew better than anyone that Kagami wasn't that type of person. She did genuinely care about him.
But that was it. She was basically telling him that they couldn't be together. That she found the person she was meant to be with.
And that person wasn't him.
"How else am I supposed to take this?" Adrien asked, "You're basically saying that we can't be together."
"Yeah..."
"All because of a stupid song."
"It's not stupid!" The raise of her voice made him flinch. "I'll admit, at first, I thought it was silly, but when I actually met him– my soulmate, we connected instantly in a way that I can't describe. It's an incredible feeling."
Adrien rolled his eyes. "Or maybe, it's just something trying to mess with your head."
"I know you're upset," Kagami sighed, "But what I feel with this guy... it's real. He's like a piece of me that's been missing."
"So... what we had wasn't real?" He asked somewhat timidly.
"I'm not saying it wasn't," Kagami said softly, "I'm saying it wasn't meant to be."
Adrien squeezed his eyes shut, willing himself not to shed a tear. In a way, he knew she was right. Was he going to admit that? No, no he wasn't. He really had hoped that things would eventually work out with Kagami. But apparently, she wanted to follow her precious soulmate song.
And according to the stupid song, they weren't meant to be.
"I know you don't understand, and you're probably confused," Kagami said slowly, "But when you find the right girl, Adrien, you'll understand, and no one else will matter but her."
"Right..." Adrien drawled out slowly. He was honestly done talking with her. His heart felt like it had been ripped in two, and there was nothing he could do to ease the pain.
He just had to accept it.
They hung up shortly afterwards– with Kagami promising that she'd always be there for him, and that if he needed anything, he could always reach out to her, but that came with conditions. She made it perfectly clear that they could only be friends, and that is all their relationship would be.
He understood, he really did. And he wouldn't dare cross that line either. But it still hurt.
Feeling somewhat numb, Adrien threw his phone somewhere on his bed, threw his legs over the edge, and stood to his feet. He practically marched over to his bathroom with his fists clenched at his sides.
When he looked at his reflection in the mirror, he scowled, "Why do you have to be an Agreste? Life would be so much simpler if you weren't."
But all his reflection did in return was scowl at him.
He wanted to slam his fists into something, or better yet, rip out his brain which was still blaring that stupid song over and over again in his head. His fingers practically itched to destroy something to fulfill his rage.
He suddenly whipped his head and glanced to his left, out the open door of his bathroom, where his eyes happened to land on the black keyboard that was collecting dust. He hadn't touched it in months. Granted, he didn't have much time to leisurely play it anymore, even though his father was still adamant about him not losing his skill.
Adrien grimaced slightly. Playing the piano used to be enjoyable when he was younger, but as he grew older, he began to conclude that he'd grown out of that too.
But the song in his mind was starting to give him a headache, and his fingers were still itching to do something.
So, on wobbly legs, Adrien made his way over to his keyboard and pulled out the bench. When he sat down, he blew on the keys lightly, which caused a bunch of dust to lift into the air and make him sneeze.
Wrinkling his nose, Adrien pressed the button that turned the keyboard on and delicately placed his fingers on the cool, appropriate keys. "Alright, old friend. Let's see if we still got it."
With the song already printed into his mind, it wasn't that hard to follow the tune with his fingers... but then he did, something about playing the song that was stuck in his head felt relieving.
Adrien noticed that the moment he started playing, the song dimmed down a lot in his mind. It was almost as if his brain and his fingers were sharing the burden; carrying the weight.
It allowed him the opportunity to take in a deep, relaxing breath.
Soon enough, Adrien found himself smiling as he allowed his fingers to move rapidly against the keys. He even caught himself humming along. His head even began bobbing from side-to-side as he played. It made him wonder why he'd put aside playing for so long.
The piano, Adrien realized, was already making him feel better. It made him feel like himself. It brought him into his element.
He missed it. He missed playing.
Adrien repeatedly played the song that was stuck in his head over and over and over again until his nimble fingers began to ache. But for some reason, that song was all that he could play right now, and it he couldn't find it in himself to stop.
That is, until he heard a knock on his door.
Adrien's fingers froze. He whipped his head to look over his shoulder. Had he really just heard correctly? Did he really just hear someone knock on his door at this time of night?
His eyes widened. What if someone had woken up from his playing? What if his playing was too loud? What if it was the old, grumpy couple that lived right across from him?
Shoot. If it really was them, the only thing that would pacify them and keep them from complaining to the landlord was money.
Adrien swallowed heavily and stood to his feet. He took his time making it to the door. Adrien reached for his jacket which was hanging on the hook by the door and slipped it on. He pulled out his wallet, which happened to still be in the jacket pocket from the previous day.
With a trembling hand, he unlocked the door and twisted the knob.
And when he opened the door, his brain practically screamed ERROR ERROR.
At the door stood a young woman he'd never seen before. She was wearing a long robe that reached her knees, and when his eyes followed her legs down, he realizing that she was also wearing fuzzy, black, cat slippers.
But that wasn't all he noticed.
She had gorgeous black hair which was pulled up into the most attractive messy bun he'd ever seen in his life. She had beautiful blue-bell eyes that blinked up at him owlishly. He couldn't help but worship her fawn, white skin, which looked richer than silk.
And her freckles. Good god, he couldn't take his eyes off of all the freckles that danced across the bridge of her nose.
He didn't even realize he'd been staring in some sort of stupor either until she cleared her throat.
"Are you... giving me money?"
Adrien blinked. And then he blinked again. She simply looked from his eyes to his hands, and when he followed her eyes and looked down, he realized he was holding his open wallet out to her, which was putting his cash out on full display.
"Umm... of course not. That's absurd." Adrien chuckled and smiled sheepishly. He was well aware of her curious eyes watching and following his every move as he scrambled to put his wallet away. "I... honestly, I thought you were the elderly couple right across from me. I keep them quiet with money when it comes to the landlord."
He was embarrassed... and he hoped that the beautiful woman in front of him didn't notice the blush that fanned his cheeks. Thankfully, and much to his surprise, she simply giggled, "That's... rather smart of you. I might consider using that same technique."
The corner of his lips twitched upward. "Do they bother you too?"
"I'd say they absolutely hate me," she giggled, "I live right next door to you, and if they don't like you, then they really don't like me."
Adrien face suddenly fell, and a look of horror replaced it. "You live next door? Oh wow, I'm so sorry! The piano must have woken you up—!"
"Oh no, don't apologize!" She held her hands out, waving them. "Your playing sounded wonderful."
For some reason, her words made him grin. "Thank you."
For a few seconds, a quiet form of comfortable silence fell in between them and they simply stared at each other... and for some reason, it wasn't awkward at all. He took that chance to admire her once more, taking in all her beauty. He wasn't sure how, but he felt like he had a strong connection with this woman.
He was brought back into the present when she cleared her throat. "I don't know how to say this without sounding completely insane," her voice sounded shaky as she spoke, "But the song you were just playing... I've had that same song stuck in my head all day long, and it's been driving me absolutely insane. And I don't mean to sound like I'm a fantasist, but today someone told me about a soulmate song, and I thought maybe..."
She trailed off, seeming unsure, and he understood why. Because all of this was odd and strange, a feeling that no one could really describe in words.
But Adrien understood now.
He understood what Kagami meant.
This feeling that she told him about... he could feel it now.
And he was sure the woman in front of him could feel it to.
"We're soulmates." Adrien breathed in what sounded out to be close to a whisper.
The woman in front of him blushed. "I believe we are, yes."
Adrien met her beautiful blue eyes with adoration. He extended his hand out to hers, and he felt a spark ignite in his skin when she placed her hand in his. "What is your name?"
"Marinette," she said, smiling up at him sweetly, "And you?"
"Adrien," he said without hesitation, because there was no doubt in his mind now that this was the woman meant for him. That the soulmate song had been right all along. "Adrien Agreste."
