Chapter 23
Adrien POV:
Adrien shook hands with his fencing opponent as his instruction clapped his hands dismissing them from today’s practice.
"Hey, Adrien can I talk to you?" Kagami asked, gently grabbing Adrien's arm.
"Yeah for sure, what is it?" The blond boy replied, taking off his helmet, his blonde locks falling on his forehead, a smile on his face.
Kagami steered him towards a bench, and sat down, looking at him in the eye with a serious expression.
“Kagami is everything alright?” Adrien asked in concern seeing her ominous expression.
"Listen, I know I said things were good between us, but it's clear you have feelings for Marinette, and... that hurts me." Kagami said in a heavy voice, still maintaining eye contact.
"No… I like you! Marinctte is just a friend!" Adrien said, frantically trying to assure both himself and his girlfriend.
"Please don't lie to me Adrien, it's very obvious you like her, and I get it, she's a great person. What I'm saying is, if I'm going to date someone, I want to date someone who likes me, not someone else."
"Kagami… I'm sorry, I'll do better I swear!" Adrien spoke quickly, panic clear in his voice.
"I'm sorry Adrien, just your word isn’t enough. I can't be in a relationship with someone who isn't fully committed to me, that's why I'm breaking up with you."
"No, Kagami please! I like you!" Adrien said. It was true, he did like Kagami, but he knew that a part of him liked Marinette. He couldn’t lie to himself. His heart.
"I hope we can still be friends, but it's just too hard for me to date you right now. Maybe in the future we'll be something again." Kagami said sadly, before simply getting up and leaving.
Adrien sat there for a moment, trying to process what had happened. He had just been dumped. Kagami had just broken up with him.
He felt numb. Sitting there on a bench, staring down at his feet, his palms rubbing his throbbing forehead. He felt numb.
He hadn’t been enough. He never was.
He slowly got up, and changed back into his regular clothes.
Everything felt empty.
His heavy feet carried him to the car waiting for him, he sat in shock during the ride home.
He went to his room without a word, barely processing Nathalie's ordering him to practice his piano.
As soon as he reached his room, he harshly slammed the door behind him, standing in the room and trying to remember what he was supposed to do.
He heard Plagg asking if he was okay, but didn't respond.
Numb…
In his dazed state he couldn’t even begin to comprehend what this heavy feeling in his chest was.
He felt stifled, he needed out.
He transformed into his alter ego, and silently jumped out of his room.
He ran across the Parisian rooftops, ignoring the gasps from the streets below as people spotted their hero.
He couldn't process anything right now, he didn't particularly care about anything right now.
He found himself landing on a familiar rooftop. Finally coming back to his senses, he turned to leave, but spotted a dark-haired head sitting in her room.
There she was, sitting at her desk, staring down at today’s assigned math homework, her eyes scrunched in concentration, her tongue sticking out as she twiddled her pencil in her fingers.
She suddenly, probably hearing the heavy thump of his landing, went up her ladder to see him standing grumly there on her roof. But she didn’t even flinch.
"Chat Noir? Is everything okay? Is there an akuma?" Marinette asked worriedly, climbing onto her roof to join him.
"Everythings fine, I should go, I'm sorry for disturbing you" He said, regretfully turning to leave.
"Sometimes wrong isn't it? You should come inside, we can talk about it if you want" Marinette said, halting his movements by reaching out for his hand, but as soon as he gazed back she let go, turning slightly pink.
He opened his mouth, about to explain how she shouldn't be troubled with him, but before he knew it she had pulled him inside of her room.
“Sorry it's a little messy, I wasn’t expecting any visitors.” Marinette said, giving him a sweet smile.
“No it's completely fine,” Chat blurted out trying desperately to reassure her, “I’m sorry I came here so...unexpectedly,” He said, feeling deep burning embarrassment flush his cheeks.
Marinette's room was very nice. It was cozy and gave off a feeling of home and caring that was just so… Marinette.
"So, is everything alright? Is there something wrong?" asked Marinette. "I mean you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but it normally makes things better" she doubled back on herself, stammering slightly.
“Y-yeah, is it that obvious” Chat Noir said, scratching the back of his neck, a nervous habit of his.
"Yeah, it is" Marinette admitted, looking at him with concern. “Besides... you're not making any cat puns,” she mumbled out, trying to cheer him up.
Chat Noir couldn’t help the soft chuckle from his lips as he felt by just being here with her. The heavy feeling in his chest didn’t seem so daunting and hopeless.
“Yeah… I guess I don't feel like making puns today. Or being a hero.” Adrien mumbled out, his heavy voice laced with dejection.
"You wanna talk about it?" Marinette asked again, this time with less hesitation.
Chat Noir let out a heavy sigh. It seemed he couldn’t keep in. He felt his eyes swarm with the bitter sting of tears, but he refused to let them fall, he had to keep them inside.
He stared down at the floor of Marinette's bedroom, not having the strength to look her in the eyes. He knew that once he did, he would give in, letting the aching feelings caught in his chest overflow into his heart.
Suddenly, he heard quiet but determined footsteps as suddenly he was wrapped up in Marinette’s warm, comforting embrace.
Without hesitation he grasped onto her tightly. Desperate to know that she was here. That someone cared. He never wanted to let go.
In her arms, the world didn’t seem so unforgiving and he no longer felt alone, because she was her.
They must have only stood there for a few minutes, but it felt like hours. He clung onto her tightly, grasping onto her like she was his life line. And he realized then, the feeling of being in her arms, is one he never wanted to forget.
"C'mon kitty, sit down, I'll get some food" Marinette said. "And then we can watch a movie"
Chat Noir’s ears perked up at the sound of the food, a small smile tugging on his lips as he nodded, taking a seat on Marinette’s chaise.
Marinette ran downstairs, and returned shortly with a plate filled with croissants.
He eagerly grasped a croissant, stuffing the flakey pastry in his mouth; finishing it in seconds, he quickly grabbed another.
Realising Marinette was staring, he quickly finished chewing. "So, you're probably wondering what I'm doing here," he said.
"That was going to be my next question" Marinette said, chuckling slightly, while bringing a chair over to sit close to him.
"It's been a rough day," he said leaning slightly against her
"Actually, more of a rough week" he admitted, smiling weekly.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Marinette softly asked while leaning her head on his shoulder.
Chat Noir looked down at her, the heavy feeling in his chest lifting, his heart thumping widly in his chest.
“Y-yeah...I do,” something in him told him, he could trust her, that he could tell her anything. So, he took a deep breath as all the pain he had buried deep down came to the surface.
It started when my girlfriend thought I was cheating with this… other girl" he said, trying to leave out the details that might reveal his identity.
"I didn't know why she was mad at me… and it was awful. She.. she was my first girlfriend and I never felt like I was doing anything right, and I liked her, but I was never enough." Chat Noir felt a fresh sheet of tears brim his eyes.
Then Marinette squeezed his hand reassuringly and he found the strength in him to continue.
"So I explained to her how I would never cheat on her, and I thought everything was fine, I thought that I was finally doing something right."
"But today, she said that she couldn't date me anymore b-because of the way I look at the other girl, the one she thought I was cheating on her with. Sh-she said it hurt her too much to see me like someone else." Adrien blubbered on, several tears leaking out of his eyes.
"Well, do you have feelings for the other girl? Maybe you can explain that it's just a misunderstanding," Marinette suggested, rubbing light, comforting circles on his back.
"That's the worst part! I do like the other girl!" Chat Noir exclaimed, fighting the urge to shout that Marinette was the 'other girl'.
"Well then maybe it's for the best that you broke up. You can't help if you like someone else, and it's clear that it was probably hurting you both to be in that relationship" Marinette said wisely.
Chat Noir looked into her gentle blue eyes, feeling a sense of relief and clarity wash over him. He hadn’t been able to share his true feelings really with anyone since his mom died.
"It'll hurt for now, but it'll get better, trust me" Marinette said, hugging Chat Noir tightly.
"Now, what movie do you want to watch?"

Marinette POV:
They decided on watching Aladdin, because who didn't love a good Disney classic.
They had pulled out Marinette’s laptop and started playing the movie. For the entirety of the movie her head rested gently on his shoulder, and his on hers.
Once the movie was over, they both decided it was late and Chat Noir should probably head home.
Now they both stood on Marinette's balcony, smiling at each other like idiots, too caught up in looking at the object of their affections to realize the other was doing the same.
"Well, I should go," Chat Noir said, interrupting the silence and dazes they were both caught in.
"Yep! You totally should! I mean not that I don't like being with you, you're amazing! I mean I have homework?" Marinette stammered, trying to get her mouth to say what her brain was thinking.
Chat Noir chuckled at her adorable stammering. She looked beautiful, her eyes animated and a sparkling shade of blue, and her smile wide, brightening the dark night.
He noticed strands of her midnight black hair were being softly blown by the gusty air in her eyes, so he tenderly pushed the tendrils back behind her ears.
Marinette blushing from head to toe.
"Thanks for cheering me up princess" Chat Noir said, remembering his vow to give Marinette a nickname.
Marinette wrinkled her nose. "Princess? Really? How cheesy can you get" Marinette said, rolling her eyes.
"No such thing as too cheesy" he replied with his signature cat-like grin.
"Oh go back to your alley you mangy cat" Marinette teased, causing Chat Noir to fall to the floor in a dramatic death, clutching his heart and claiming that "he had been killed by her harsh words!"
Marinette laughed, before saying that he really did need to get going.
"Well, see you around purrincess" Chat Noir said teasingly making one last pun before jumping off her balcony, hopping rooftop to rooftop before he disappeared over the horizon.
