Caffeine

Adrien trudged through the busy Paris sidewalks with his bodyguard, Gorilla, by his side. He was so tired and worn out from the activities the night before. Photoshoots followed by exhausting interviews about his father's next clothing line.

He needed a boost. He had never felt so exhausted before.

Surprisingly, Adrien was never the coffee person. Frankly, he didn't like how it tasted. But from what he's heard about it's motivating effects, he needed some coffee. Right. Now.

Luckily, Marinette's bakery was right ahead, down the street. He knew they sold coffee. It was a bakery after all.

Before entering the building, Adrien instructed the Gorilla to stand outside while he run in for a quick cup of coffee.

"I know father would be worried about it staining my teeth if he found out," Adrien mumbled when he noticed the look of disapproval on the Gorilla's face. "But one cup isn't gonna hurt."

Or so Adrien thought.

He entered through the bakery doors, greeted by the sweet fragrance of fresh baked pastries. The tiny bakery was empty, except for a quiet old man sitting in the corner of the room eating a croissant and reading the newspaper.

Adrien immediately noticed Marinette standing behind the counter and smiled at her. She was wiping down the counter, but froze when she felt his familiar eyes on her.

She squeaked, turned around, and raced into the back to get her mother. She felt like a wimp, obviously escaping the possibility of talking to Adrien, but technically she wasn't supposed to be taking orders today. So, in theory, she had a reason of avoiding Adrien even though her parents wouldn't have cared if she took the order.

Sabine walked up to the register and greeted Adrien from across the counter with a warm smile. "Hello Adrien. What can I getcha?"

Adrien peeked around Sabine briefly before placing his order to locate Marinette, but she wasn't there. He shrugged and continued with his order.

"Could I just have a coffee please?" he asked vaguely.

"What kind honey?" Sabine asked. "We have black, iced, latte..."

"Oh, uh, black is fine," Adrien blinked, unsure of what the difference is. He was definitely a newbie at the whole coffee thing.

"Light roast or dark roast?"

"I'm not sure, whatever packs more caffeine," Adrien shrugged.

"Light roast it is," Sabine smiled playfully. "Anything else for you sweetie?"

"That's it, thank you," Adrien smiled, feeling accomplished. He had ordered his first ever coffee.

That sounds lame, he thought in his head.

Sabine gave him his total and he paid it graciously, then went to sit down and wait. Another customer came through the bakery door and walked up to the register.

"Marinette!" Sabine called, turning around. "Could you make me a light roast black coffee?"

"Sure!" Marinette replied. She skipped through the doorway and got to work.

It didn't take long for the coffee to be made, and Marinette called out the order. Adrien jumped up and jogged over to pick it up.

"Thanks Marinette," Adrien winked.

She melted. If she had known she was making the coffee for Adrien..!

Marinette retreated into the back and washed her hands.

Adrien didn't waste any time. He sat down and immediately took a sip of the coffee. He retracted in disgust. Black coffee tasted horrible! He felt bad though because Marinette had made it, so he wasn't going to waste it. He kept on drinking.

About halfway through the drink, the effects of the caffeine started to hit him. He began to feel tingly inside. And restless. Like he could jump off the walls almost.

No longer did he feel drained and tired. Now he felt energized and empowered.

Marinette peeked her head out from around the corner to see if Adrien was still there. Sure enough, she spotted him sitting down and quickly sipping the coffee she had made. Her cheeks flushed. It made her feel good that he liked the coffee! Though, she never thought Adrien would be a black coffee kind of guy.

Adrien stood up, his hands shaking wildly. His eyes went wide and he laughed euphorically.

He raised his arms up and yelled at the top of his lungs. "I feel LIKE A NEW MAN!"

Marinette's cheeks grew increasingly red, this time in embarrassment, as she watched Adrien make a spectacle of himself. The caffeine was definitely kicking in!

"You guys!" Adrien exclaimed, pointing at a couple standing in line. He pointed a shaky finger at his almost empty coffee. "Get this stuff! It is GOOD!"

Now everyone in the bakery was staring at Adrien in shock, even Marinette and Sabine!

"I could dance!" Adrien laughed crazily. His wide eyes then fell upon Marinette who watched in shock and he smiled. "You there, fair maiden! DANCE WITH ME!"

Marinette's cheeks were on fire. She held up her hands defensively. "N-no! I can't d-dance!!"

"Nonsense! Everyone can dance!" Adrien hollered, running over towards Marinette and grabbing her hand. He dragged her over to his table.

"I can't!" Marinette whimpered embarrassingly, trying to shield her face.

"Don't cover your pretty face!" Adrien shouted. He let her go and began dancing like a fool. "See! Dance like this!"

Marinette removed her hands from her face and slowly began laughing. He was making such a fool out of himself, she almost felt bad!

"You better stop!" Marinette giggled, trying to grab Adrien. "People are watching."

The Gorilla stormed in the doors from outside due to all the ruckus. People were pointing and laughing at Adrien who was perfect entertainment.

Marinette pretended to dance along too, to at least try and take away the attention from Adrien. People pulled out their cellphones and began recording.

"Hey don't do that!" Marinette shouted and stopped, shielding Adrien. "This could embarrass him later!"

"Who cares this kid is a hoot!" one man taunted.

The Gorilla rushed up to Adrien, his face set in stone. He growled at the people recording Adrien.

"You have to leave Adrien! These people are making fun of you!" Marinette declared.

"I don't care what people think Marinette!" Adrien shrugged. "I'm done caring about what people think of me!"

Marinette sighed, looking away sadly. She didn't want tabloids creating a bad image of Adrien.

"Don't believe me?" Adrien asked her.

She turned and faced him in surprise; he bent over so they were eye to eye. Then, Adrien puckered his lips and leaned forward, gently pressing them on hers.

Her heart beat increased dramatically as her eyes widened. She felt her cheeks heat up once again and her legs felt wobbly. Did he just...? No way!

Marinette wanted to pass out, but before that could happen, the Gorilla finally pulled Adrien away. He dragged the model out of the bakery and into a waiting limo. Marinette didn't even get to say anything to him.

Adrien just waved to her as he was dragged away. Even outside, she heard him shout something that literally made her pass out: "Boy have I wanted to do that for a long time!"

Marinette teetered backwards and fell flat on her back.

Sabine rushed over to her aid as people fled from the bakery. "Are you okay, sweetie?"

"Never better," she replied dreamily, staring up at the ceiling. She didn't even care about the pain radiating throughout her back.

Sabine helped her daughter to her feet. "I can't believe how Adrien reacted to the caffeine in that coffee!"

"Yeah, I can guess he's never had it before," Marinette winced, rubbing her lower back. "And now we know why."

"And when he kissed you, it's like my dreams came true!" Sabine said dejectedly, placing a hand on her chest. "I knew that boy was the one for you!"

Marinette had felt that sliver of hope, that perhaps Adrien really did like her and hid his true feelings, but then those hopes had shattered when she came back to reality.

"It was just the caffeine, mom. It makes you do absurd things I guess," Marinette said sadly.

"Nonsense," Sabine smiled, rubbing her shoulder comfortingly. "I believe he truly does have feelings for you. He just needs to unlock them."

"Plagg, remind me to never drink caffeine again," Adrien mumbled incoherently, an ice pack placed on his head. He lay on his couch, not remembering anything that had happened that day.

Plagg snickered in amusement. "You sure? It seemed like you loved the smooch you shared with Marinette."

Adrien immediately sat up, his eyes blown wide. "What?!"

"It's all over social media," Plagg commented. "Your kiss with Marinette."

"I kissed her?!" Adrien screamed, hyperventilating. His face flushed red. "No, that can't be!"

"Oh, it can," Plagg laughed.

"If Ladybug sees that-"

"Game over for you," Plagg finished.

"Be quiet, Plagg!" Adrien wailed in pain. He grabbed his head in frustration. "Things are gonna be so weird between Marinette and I, now! What if she thinks I'm a freak?"

Plagg floated away and grabbed Adrien's cellphone. He flipped it around to reveal the video of him dancing like a fool in the bakery.

"Too late," Plagg chuckled.

Adrien fell to the floor in embarrassment. That day, he vowed to never drink coffee ever again!
