Chapter 35: Syren Part 2
While Chat Noir, Styx and Maray were still looking for the ingredients, Syren had been busy with her plan to flood the entire city of Paris with water. It was slow at first, but then really picked up speed when her flood hit the Seine River, making the water level rise even further and forcing civilians to get to higher ground as it completely flooded the streets. Soon enough, it reached the point where it started flooding the inside of buildings too... like the theater where Marinette and her friends were watching their movie. Needless to say, the sight of people in the frontmost rows running out of the room as the water started coming in through the lowermost exit had the group of teenagers on high alert.
"What's going on?" Marinette wondered aloud when the person in front of her ran out of the room, only to get her answer when the water rushed under the seats where she and her friends were sitting. Immediately, everyone in that same row lifted their feet onto their seats while screams of fear filled the room alongside the water... only for more water also rush into the theater from the back exits.
"Okay, who left the faucet running?" Alya tentatively joked, trying to lighten the mood while everyone tried to find a way out of the theater before it was filled with flood water.
"The stairs! Quick!" Marinette shouted when she saw a semi-flooded doorway, pointing at it so that everyone knew where to go. With a destination set, the crowd sloshed their way through the half-flooded theater and made it to the stairwell, quickly climbing up the stairs to the top.
"Hurry up!" Alya urged the crowd after she and Marinette reached a higher level, the two directing the traffic flow so everyone could get to safety.
"Everyone, up on the roof!" Marinette added on, watching as the last person of the crowd passed her and Alya before they followed behind, the flood water filling the stairway right behind them.
It was a bit of a climb, but everyone made it to the theater roof, allowing Marinette and Alya to slam the door behind them to block off the water behind them for a little bit. But once they did, the two girls climbed the little staircase up to the viewing area of the roof to join their friends... only to be shocked to find the entire city was flooded almost to where they were standing. Upon seeing the ocean of water overtaking the city she knew and loved, Marinette couldn't help but gasp at the sight, in devastated awe of the disaster in front of her.
"This is bad! My circuits are sensitive to water." Markov whined while hovering next to Max, the robot having as much to worry about as his friends. But the moment of reflection on the foreboding was interrupted when a hollering Kim ran past Max and Markov and jumped off the roof, diving into the water just below it.
"Come on, guys! I can teach you to swim in two seconds flat, Markov." Kim offered after he resurfaced, him being the only one to find the whole city flooded with water something to enjoy due to his love for swimming. "You just put your arms like this, then you push your legs, and it's kind of like being a frog, you see." the jock explained while demonstrating to the little robot, unaware of the previously board Max spotting a fin in the water approaching Kim.
"In fact, it helps to think as a frog, too, you know—" Kim continued, only to be interrupted when Syren suddenly leapt out of the water behind him, catching everyone's attention and awe with her grand entrance. But it was short-lived when the aquatic akuma dived back in... pushing Kim underwater with her!
"KIM!!" Max frantically yelled while running to the railing to search for any sign of his friend, unaware of Marinette quietly slipping away from the others before Alya ran to the edge of the roof to help Max look for their friend.
"Where is he? Can you see him?" Alya called out to the other searchers, only to see Marinette in a trash bin and using a shovel to paddle away from the theatre. "Marinette, what are you doing?!" the reporter shouted at her best friend, causing Marinette to suddenly stop her escape.
"Um, I'm gonna go get help!" Martinette called to Alya, hoping her little fib would take suspicion away from her before she started paddling again.
"Okay so... I guess we're saved, then?" Alix asked Alya with deadpan sarcasm, not hopeful of Marinette's chances... especially when she looked over and saw the girl in question fall out of her makeshift boat. But despite Marinette's quick recovery, Alya could only offer a shy lopsided smile to ease Alix's doubt. At the moment... it was all they had to work with.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contrary to Alix's belief, Marinette's plan to get help was to get away from the crowds so that she could find a place to transform and deal with the obvious akuma threat. Thankfully, she didn't have to go far to find a good place to do so, having paddled out of sight of the others rather quickly after going behind another building.
"Okay, we're alone." Marinette announced to Tikki, opening her purse to let her kwami out before donning her usual disguise and finally saying... "Tikki, spots on!" the designer exclaimed, transforming into Ladybug and diving into the water below her.
At first, Ladybug was shocked to see the streets flooded with water, but she was even more surprised to see all kinds of aquatic life swimming around her as well. But seeing as it was the result of an akuma, the spotted heroine kept on swimming to try and find Syren so that she could defeat her. It took a little longer than she would have liked, especially when she was almost swallowed by a giant catfish and needed to resurface after dodging it. However, she was able to spot Syren pulling Kim with a large bubble around his head along with her after she went back underwater, leaving her relieved that she could at least get Kim out of the way.
"Huh! This is amazing! I can breathe underwater, just like a fish." Kim gushed to Syren as she led the way, neither of them unaware of Ladybug swimming up behind them.
"I knew you'd love it! And I've got lots of other surprises for you, you'll see—" Syren excitedly regaled to Kim, only for Ladybug to use her distractedness to her advantage and grab Kim by the ankle with her yo-yo, pulling him away from Syren. "My prince!" the mermaid akuma wailed when she saw him taken away, quickly swimming after Kim to grab and pull back him to her. But when Syren tried to drag them deeper, Ladybug grabbed ahold of a window railing to stop them. And if things weren't bad enough, the struggle caused Ladybug to run low on air... which Hawkmoth quickly took note of from his side of the psychic link between him and Syren.
"With every new environment comes a new set of rules, Ladybug! You won't be able to win this time since ladybugs can't breathe underwater!" Hawkmoth crowed as the glowing butterfly outline appeared on Syren's face, practically gleeful at the prospect of Ladybug being unable to fight his newest akuma. "Syren, are you going to let Ladybug steal your prince away from you?" the resident supervillain questioned his minion, hoping to stir Syren's animosity towards Ladybug even further.
"Never!" Syren snarled as the outline vanished, glaring at the red heroine with a hatred so strong, it left Ladybug worried.
'Oh crap...' Ladybug internally muttered, not liking where this was going to end now that she angered Syren so much.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(8 minutes earlier)
While Ladybug had lept into the fray to find Syren, she was ignorant to Chat Noir and his companions having finally found the ingredients the feline was sent to get. Now that they found them, the trio exited the back room with their bounty in hand, proud of how fast they found them.
"Whew! That went better than I expected!" Styx breathed in relief, the jar of Gleeful Lilly nectar under her arm as she closed the back room door.
"You said it! I would have thought it'd take so much longer." Chat Noir remarked as he stepped up to the middle of the room, both hands holding onto the liquified Auorua Borealis... just in case something surprised him again.
"Well, that's because we're a good team." Maray spoke up, joyfully wrapping the free arm not holding onto the Unicorn Sweat jar around his waist.
"Yeah, we are!" Chat Noir agreed, prompting the two to high-five... and almost dropping their jars.
"Woah, careful there! We just found those!" Styx worriedly reminded her younger companions, reaching out to keep them from dropping the jars while they readjusted their hold on them. "But yes... we seem to make a good team indeed." the shopkeeper added once the kids got a better grip on their jars, backing away to smile at them.
"Of course, we do! Though I wish we had more time to hang out." Chat Noir admitted as he and Maray pulled out of their hug, his smile faltering a little at the thought.
"Same here, kid. But you'd better get these over to Master Fu before you're late for Chinese." Styx chided the hero, not looking to be the reason why he'd be in trouble with his father... again.
"Yeah, you're right. Plus, I'm not looking to get a lecture from my father if I'm late." Chat Noir reflected, giving Styx a crooked smile at her concern
"Exactly! So you better get moving!" Maray agreed, quickly handing him her jar and immediately causing the black feline to nearly drop them both with the sudden addition.
"Whoa there, Maray. He needs his arms free to get back to the Guardian's place." Styx lightly lectured her ward, coming over to use her magic to lift the jars Chat Noir had in his arms and making them float next to him.
"Right, sorry!" Maray apologised, a faint blush appearing across her cheeks to show her embarrassment as she bashfully rubbed her bicep.
"It's okay." Styx said, placing a comforting hand on Maray's shoulder before turning to face Chat Noir once more. "You have anything that can hold these, kid?" the white Troll questioned the hero, using her magic to make her jar hover alongside the others.
"I do, actually." Chat Noir replied, followed by him pulling out his bottomless pouch from his suit's pocket and handing it to Styx. "I got this on my first visit to Stone Arc. Figured it would be a good way to hold my kwami's excessive amounts of camembert without it being suspicious." the hero in black explained, watching as Styx inspected it.
"A bottomless pouch? Very smart! This will do nicely." Styx declared, opening it wide enough to let the jars fly inside and settle in. "There. That should keep them safe." the green-haired Troll announced as she closed the pouch, handing it back to Chat Noir right after.
"Thanks, Styx." Chat Noir thanked as he put away the pouch, only to notice the jar of sparks was about to fall from the shelf. "STYX, THE JAR!!" he yelled while pointing at it, making Styx turn around and see it just as it started to fall.
"AH!" Styx yelped, followed by her quickly using her magic to catch it and make it hover mere inches from the ground. "Whew, that was close!" the shopkeeper sighed in relief, folding in on herself before straightening up and bringing the jar over to Maray while Chat Noit looked at it critically.
"I saw you guys capturing those little sparks when I arrived, but you never elaborated on them." Chart Noir said, watching as Maray grabbed it from the air and held it in her hands. "What's in that jar, exactly?" the hero in black asked, hoping to settle his curiosity on the matter now that another chance had arrived.
"Pixies." Styx and Maray simply replied, giving the feline hero matching smirks.
"Pixies?" Chat Noir repeated, totally unfamiliar with the creature.
"Mischievous little buggers if they roam free. They're able to subject anyone to witness their worst fear if they enter any orifice close to their brain." Styx explained as she took the jar from Maray, double-checking that it was sealed shut.
"Sounds like Hawkmoth would love to get his hands on them." Chat Noir remarked, surprising himself with how well he was taking the information. "But why do you guys have them?" the hero in black questioned them, now sceptical about the fact that they have the means to make a mob of akumas potentially.
"They're not willingly in our possession if that's what you're thinking." Maray spoke up, her hand resting on her waist as she pointed a somewhat accusatory finger at the hero.
"She's right. Every two months, Gut from Heartstone sends a jar of these little guys to drive away my customers. And today just happened to be that day." Styx explained, moving the jar around in her hands to make sure it was void of cracks after its almost tumble to the ground. "How he has so many to send a whole jar full each time, I have no idea. But it's getting on my nerves." she remarked as she finished with her inspection, sliding the jar to rest under her arm.
"I'm sorry to hear that." Chat Noir sympathised, appalled to hear they were subjected to such a cruel prank.
"Eh, it's okay. We've gotten rather good at capturing them over the years." Maray assured the hero, lightly jabbing Chat Noir in the stomach with her elbow to try and cheer him up a little. "But the problem is we're running out of spots in the city above to relocate them." the white-haired Troll admitted, her own mood souring at the news while Chat Noir gawked at her in shock.
"Wait, didn't you just say that these will make someone see their worst fear if they're let loose? Why would you let them free on the surface?" Chat Noir questioned the pair, not believing what they were going to do with the pixies.
"Pixies only do that if they have to, but aside from that, they're completely harmless. If unprovoked, they are actually quite sweet and are very good pollinators in the gardens they take home in." Styx elaborated, bringing the jar out from under her arm and showing it to the hero again.
"We used to keep them in our garden at home when this happened. But we've run out of room for them and have been putting them in normally undisturbed garden-like areas at the moment." Maray added, walking over to Styx and gently grabbing the jar. "It's a shame, though. I love having these little guys filtering around the place." the eight-year-old admitted, holding the jar full of pixies to her eye level.
"I do too, Maray. But having too many pixies in one spot is not good for a garden in the long run." Styx reminded the girl, placing her hand on the top of the jar and pushing it down from Maray's eyes to regain her focus.
"What if I let them loose in the garden at home? There'd be plenty of space for them." Chat Noir asked, hoping to be able to help them now that he knew the full details of their plans.
"That's sweet of you to offer, kid. But I'm not sure letting them loose at your house would be a good idea. Mainly because I know your father would notice a sudden spike in how well the garden looks in the first two weeks of the pixies being there." Styx illustrated.
"That's how fast they work?" Chat Noir gawked, his eyes widening to the size of dinner plates at the mere mental image.
"Yep! Our garden is the envy of our apartment building!" Maray cheered, preening at her idol's surprise.
"Wow! That's really cool!" Chat Noir exclaimed, having gathered enough of his wits to reply so eloquently. "But seriously, I want to help you guys out. You've done so much for me, Ladybug and my friend Marinette, I want to repay you in some small way." the hero in black offered, his arms hovering mid-shoulder shrug as he gave them a small smile to put the females at ease. Fortunately... his tactic seemed to have worked.
"Well... " Styx began, her hand coming to rest on her chin as she internally mulled over the idea while Chat Noir was at the edge of his figurative seat for her answer. "I don't see why not. Besides, I'm sure you can find a solution." the white Troll decided, greatly elating the feline that she agreed.
"You can count on me!" Chat Noir happily assured Styx as he pulled out his pouch again, opening it so that she could put the jar inside.
"Just make sure you don't break the jar, okay? Otherwise, you'll have a big clean-up when they get loose." Styx lectured the hero, giving him concise instructions on how to prevent mass hysteria.
" 'Don't break the jar', got it!" Chat Noir repeated to confirm his retention, putting the pouch away in his suit pocket again. "Thanks again, guys! You really helped me out in a pinch." the hero in black thanked the two females, zipping up his pocket as he spoke.
"Our pleasure, dude! Come back soon, okay?" Maray requested as she went for another hug, wrapping her arms around her idol's waist.
"Absolutely!" Chat Noir replied, returning Maray's hug by wrapping one of his arms around her before sadly needing to pull away. "See you guys later!" the feline in black announced, waving to them as he turned to leave the stall.
"Bye!" Styx and Maray replied in kind, waving back to him as they stood side-by-side.
But as Chat Noir left the stall's entrance, he was greeted by the sound of... splashing? Upon hearing the peculiar sound, Chat Noir rapidly turned his head to locate the cause of the noise, his eyes scanning for any possible offenders. However, as soon as he looked at the ground, the hero was surprised to find himself in a rising flow of water as the liquid rushed down the path towards the lower areas of Stone Arc.
"What the?" Chat Noir gaped, only to see some of Styx's neighbouring shopkeepers coming out and seeing the running water as well. "Um, guys?! Something's going on out here!" he called to the females behind him, prompting Styx and Maray to rush to his side and see the water as well.
"What the heck! Why is there water in the streets?" Maray wondered aloud, not believing what she was seeing despite the sight being right in front of her. But as she and Chat were focused on the water flowing through the streets, Styx was looking around for what could have caused the growing flood... soon spotting it and making her feel like her stomach turned into lead.
"It might have something to do with that." Styx spoke up as she pointed at the ever-flowing waterfalls of Stone Arc's cavernous space, directing her younger companions to see they were flowing with more water than normal.
"But the rainy season is over! Why are the waterfalls flooding the streets again?" Maray wailed as she turned her gaze away from the waterfalls, looking up at her caretaker for the answer.
"Again? What do you mean, 'again'?" Chat Noir asked the two, not understanding what Maray had meant with her choice of words.
"Due to the city sitting on a central lagoon, Stone Arc is susceptible to flooding after huge rainstorms." Styx said, beginning to explain how their city worked just as loud and annoying sirens started going off around them. "There have been many times where it's been excessive. One of the worst times this happened was the Great Flood of 1910, where the lower two-thirds of Stone Arc were completely submerged in water." the green-haired Troll continued, her voice doing great in cutting through the loud sirens and the sudden amassing Trolls starting to evacuate the area.
"Seriously? How can you guys live with that?!" Chat Noir yelled over the noise around them, now concerned by how much the Trolls put up with while living underground.
"It's home to nearly everyone down here. So they make the most of it." Styx supplied. "But this..." she began, pointing at the waterfalls again to emphasise her soon-to-be-made point.
"This is too much too fast for it to be a rainstorm. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm very sure a storm wasn't in the cards for today, right kid?" Styx questioned the hero, wanting to make sure she had the facts right before going any further.
"No, you're right. Plus it's been sunny all day." Chat Noir grimly confirmed.
"Then this is something else entirely. Something out of the ordinary." Styx declared, knowing there was no other explanation for the city's sudden rising water level.
"An akuma?" Maray suggested, the thought being the only thing coming to her mind as a logical factor in this situation.
"Possibly." Styx agreed. "Either way, you need to go and find out what's going on topside right now, Chat Noir." the shopkeeper told the boy, fully turning her attention to him.
"No way! I'm not going to leave when I can help you and the Trolls down here! That's not what heroes do!" Chat Noir protested, hating the idea of leaving them high and dry... and not in an ironic way at all.
"Loving that desire to help, kid, but Stone Arc has safety measures for occasions like this. While it's not meant for full-cavern flooding like what's eventually going to happen, it should last long enough for you and Ladybug to fix things." Styx explained as the evacuation crowd grew bigger, hoping to assure Chat Noir that they would be fine on their own for a bit. "Which means you are needed up on the surface more than you are down here." she stressed, placing her hands onto his shoulders to stare him down just as the water in the streets picked up speed and rose higher.
"But..." Chat Noir began.
"You heard Styx, dude! No 'but' about it! Now get going before this gets any worse!" Maray exclaimed, fully agreeing with Styx's conclusion and wanting the imminent danger to go away as soon as possible. Thankfully, it seemed to do the trick in convincing the hero to do just that, seeing as he looked to the ground to his right and sighed in relent.
"You..." Chat Noir stammered, readverting his stare to Styx. "You sure you guys will be okay?" he asked, willing to stay and help all of Stone Arc if they said otherwise.
"We'll be fine, kid. Don't worry." Styx assured him, giving him a soft smile at his concern. "Now, go!" the white Troll ordered, pointing at the path to the topside exit. Immediately, Chat Noir gave her a hard nod and started making his way past the frantic crowd so that he could get to the surface and help stop this growing crisis. But before he got too far from the stall, he turned around to his companions once again.
"Ladybug and I will fix this! I promise!" Chat Noir declared, followed by him turning back to the path ahead of him and continuing on his way to the exit.
"We know you will, kid." Styx quietly replied, only to focus on the current state of things as the water grew deeper and threatened to flood her shop. Seeing the danger, she and Maray quickly close up shop; with Maray bringing in the front facade before Styx sealed it off with an enchantment. Once that was done, they stayed close to each other as they joined the other Trolls heading to Vorgar's Castle for the safety measures to be enacted, hoping that this sudden flood would be over soon.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After leaving Styx and Maray's stall, Chat Noir made his way through the panicking Trolls and towards the topside exit. It took a few minutes to make his way through, but he soon made it to the foot of the crystal staircase going up and taking out his staff, slamming it into the ground and extending it. By holding onto the top of his weapon, Chat Noir zoomed straight to the top of the stairs and swung himself to the edge of the pit-like section of the cavern before hitting the ceiling. With a well-placed landing, the feline exchanged his weapon for his Horngazle and ran to the exit, hoping to take down the new threat to both cities.
"Please don't be too flooded. Please don't be too flooded, PLEASE DON'T BE TOO FLOODED!!!" Chat Noir's frantic chant echoed off the slick stone walls of the underground cavern. With each stroke of his Horngazle, he prayed that the outline of the exit would hold against the mounting pressure of the Seine's angry waters. His heart hammered in his chest as he finished sketching and punched through the weakened stone.
But a surge of dread washed over him as the breach unleashed a torrential deluge into the cavern, the water rushing in with relentless fury and mocking his hopes of a safe passage.
"Oh... CRAAAAAP!!!" the feline hero shouted, his cry drowned out by the deafening roar of the flood as he was quickly swept off his feet and tumbled helplessly into the dark embrace of the raging current.
The icy water closed over him, stealing his breath and dragging him deeper into the submerged cavern, panic seizing him as he struggled to find a foothold amidst the swirling chaos. Fortunately, he finally broke through the surface, gasping for air as he fought to keep his head above water while desperately clutching his staff as a lifeline after extending it to wedge into the cavern walls.
"I SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT THIS THROUGH!!!" Chat Noir scolded himself, his voice cracking with frustration as he battled against the relentless current, muscles burning with exertion.
But as he held onto his staff, he spotted a series of narrow handholds just within reach on the wall to his right, prompting him to claw his way across his staff towards the slick walls. Once he was close enough, Chat Noir propelled himself towards the wall with a surge of determination, feeling rewarded when his scrabbling fingers found purchase. Now that he found precarious stability on the handholds, he scanned the cavern for an escape route as the flood threatened to drag him under.
The hero in black was almost out of hope when he saw no escape... until he spotted a faint glimmer of daylight through the exit he had drawn. Without hesitation, Chat Noir quickly reached for the button on his staff and pressed it, making the staff collapse before he brought it to the wall and jammed it into a sturdy handhold. But when he looked up to make sure his trajectory was aligned with the exit, the feline's eyes widened in shock when he saw the exit starting to close back up.
"Crap! I've got to hurry!" he yelped in a panic, his heart racing as he pressed the button to extend it, using it to propel himself towards the closing gap and through the churning water.
The current tugged mercilessly at his legs as he hurtled towards freedom, the walls of the narrow passage closing in around him as he did. But with a surge of desperate energy, Chat Noir propelled himself forward through the exit just inches ahead of the grinding stone door that threatened to seal his fate. And with a final, thunderous thud, the passage behind him was sealed shut behind him. Exhausted and trembling with adrenaline, the hero gasped for air, relief flooding through him like a torrent as he tightly clutched his staff in his hand.
However, his triumph was fleeting. Unbeknownst to the hero, a new horror awaited... he was not on solid ground! As Chat Noir attempted to draw in a breath, his lungs burned with exertion and made him realize with a jolt that he was now fully submerged in icy water, its weight pressing down on him like a crushing vice. Panic seized him as he struggled against the pressure, frantic to reach the surface while his already tired limbs were struggling to do so. But just when he thought his strength would fail him, Chat Noir quickly pulled out his staff and extended it to the waterlogged ground below him.
The staff continued to go upwards, bringing Chat Noir along with it as it broke through the surface of the vast body of water, letting the poor boy gasp for air in desperate relief. Now free from the water, renewed determination fueled the feline's every move as he soared high above the sprawling cityscape, the weight of his escape heavy on his shoulders. But it lessened when he landed with a graceless thud atop one of Notre Dame's ancient towers, soon laying there with his chest heaving and his hands clinging to the solid stone beneath him, thankful to be alive as he drank in the cool afternoon air.
"That... was... ridiculously close!" Chat Noir managed a weak chuckle, his voice hoarse with exertion. "Oh God, I just sounded like Chloé." he groaned, shaking his head in self-deprecation.
But his moment of levity was short-lived as he caught sight of the massive water level surrounding Paris, filling him with renewed dread.
"Oh... this is bad. No wonder Stone Arc is flooding so fast!" Chat Noir muttered grimly, his voice tinged with concern as he surveyed the rising water levels engulfing the city of Paris, only to shake himself out of his worry. "No, focus! I've got to find Ladybug and end this chaos."
With a deep breath to steady his nerves, Chat Noir reaffirmed his resolve as the urgency of the situation pressed upon him while rising to his feet. From there, he pulled out his staff and began to leap from rooftop to rooftop in search of his red-clad partner, agile and determined as he raced against time to save the city from disaster. However, his search was in vain until he landed on an apartment roof, having been unsuccessful in his search for Ladybug... until he suddenly saw the girl in question come flying out of the water, screaming.
"Ladybug?!" the feline gawked for a moment, watching his partner flying through the air for a moment before he leapt up and caught her, landing with her on another roof. "You didn't tell me you were going swimming today." Chat Noir quipped as he held Ladybug in his arms bridal style, letting her cough out the water in her lungs and catch her breath again.
"I wasn't planning on it. Ladybugs aren't exactly cut out for deep-sea diving, you know." Ladybug chided her partner as he gently placed her back onto her feet, placing her hands on her knees while regaining her bearings.
"Cats aren't exactly crazy about water either, you know." Chat Noir replied, matching his partner's energy out of habit before refocusing on the danger surrounding them. "But we have to hurry. Paris isn't the only city in danger from this akuma." the hero in black revealed.
"What do you mean?" Ladybug asked as she stood at her full height, unsure of what her companion was talking about.
"I just returned from Stone Arc on an errand for Master Fu. The whole cavern is being flooded thanks to this new akuma overfilling the Seine." Chat Noir reported, followed by him shaking his head to ring his fluffy blonde hair of leftover water from his unexpected swim earlier.
"Are the Trolls alright?" Ladybug fretted when hearing the news, now concerned for their underground neighbours.
"They have safety measures in place thanks to previous flooding over the years, but that won't last long with the rate the cavern is filling up." Chat Noir explained, trying to keep his own worry contained so that they could focus on stopping the new akuma.
"In that case, we better defeat Syren as soon as possible." Ladybug declared, stretching her sore muscles. "The only problem is that we can't fight long underwater without air." the spotted heroine took note of, having learned that the hard way a few minutes earlier.
"Well, we can always scoop up the water. It'll just take a long time." Chat Noir joked before he winked at Ladybug, trying to lighten the mood a little.
"This isn't the time to joke around, Chat Noir. We need to find a way to fight Syren on her home turf without resurfacing." Ladybug lectured her partner, not in the mood for his jokes but appreciating his efforts nonetheless.
"Well, Master Fu was still working on the aquatic power-up when I left him earlier. That would definitely do the trick." Chat Noir suggested, bringing a smile to Ladybug's face at the idea.
"If he's managed to find out what 'The Tear of Joy' is after all this time, that is." Ladybug countered, remembering Chat Noir's mention of an errand for the old Guardian.
"He might not have, but I do have an idea on how to solve it." Chat Noir assured her, thinking back to the advice he got from Styx before leaving Stone Arc.
"Then we better get back to Master Fu's place! Come on!" Ladybug announced before she started running off in the direction of Master Fu's apartment, Chat Noir following close behind her.
