Toby
Lady, Noir, and Basil continued to stare at each other in silence. The detective was suspicious while the heroes were nervous and didn't know what to do or say. Basil was beginning to lose patience; Just looking at those youngsters he drew some deductions, but he still needed to question them.
Inside the house, Dawson and Olivia watched what was happening. After the little girl told Basil what had happened to her father, the detective walked around the room analyzing the information, stopping by the window while telling the doctor and the girl to keep quiet. They heard voices outside the window. Basil cautiously opened it and found these two young... eccentrics.
Olivia climbed up on one of the couches to get a better look and saw two people outside the house. One of them was dressed completely in black, while the other looked like a detective, but with a ladybug print, which aroused the girl's curiosity.
"Why do your clothes have a ladybug print?"
Everyone present looked at the girl. Before Lady could say anything, Basil beat her to it.
"It seems that these youngsters have read too much about heroes and heroines in mythologies and folklore, so they try to do the same and these themes were created."
Lady and Noir were stunned. Basil was expected to be unaware of Miraculouses, but they didn't expect him to say something like that. Knowing she couldn't hide anything from the detective, the coccinellid-rodent walked over to the window, leaned against the sill, and spoke to Olivia.
"A part of what Basil said is true, we know the heroes and heroines of myths and folklore. But the 'try to do the same' is not for fun as here the detective meant."
"So?" asked the girl
"We are real hero and heroine. And if we're here, it's to help you find your father and defeat Ratigan."
"Well, I've never heard of anything as far-fetched as that!" Basil exclaimed. "You two come in right now and tell us the truth."
Lady shrugged and walked into the house, followed by a not very convinced Noir. Upon entering, Basil, Olivia and Dawson were amazed to see them better. Surveying them from head to toe, the detective put his mind to work. The heroine noticed and rolling her eyes she spoke to Basil.
"Could you please stop looking at us like that and jump to conclusions? You want explanations, but immediately you begin to deduce and the only thing you will get are wrong ideas."
"Okay, Miss Foreigner. Start talking."
Everyone present looked at Basil in amazement, especially Lady and Noir. The young woman was transformed and therefore her identity was a secret, making it impossible for them to discover anything.
"How...?"
"Elementary, miss. Your manner of speaking, walking, and acting is not in keeping with of an English lady; In addition to the fact your accent when talking about is of a person who has been living in London for a long time, but whom has not forgotten her roots, which has to do with the Spanish language, correct?"
"Uh... yes"
"And not precisely from Spain, but from Latin America. Argentina? Venezuela? Peru?"
"Mexico"
"Amazing" said Dawson.
"Whoa!" Olivia exclaimed excitedly.
"Yet your friend has the bearing of an English gentleman despite the fact he has not said a single word," Basil continued. "Although I must admit it puzzles me a little that, being a mouse, some details of his outfit allude to a cat."
"What the...?" Noir said stunned.
"At first glance one would think he works in a funeral home because he dresses completely in black. But if one carefully observes his gloves, they would notice these refer to claws and immediately one would mistakenly think he is a rat, if it were not that his complexion and tail do not match the patterns of that species. And the staff hangs at his side, like a sword, has a green cat print printed on it.
Now Basil did leave everyone present speechless. In truth, that subject was the mousy version of Sherlock Holmes. Lady snapped out of her stupor and spoke to Basil.
"Okay, I have to admit I'm pretty impressed because we're supposed to be covering up our identities and..."
"Say! Speaking of the facet of heroes, hiding who they are is something new."
"That's because we have an enemy, who also hides his identity, he allied himself with Ratigan and we must find him."
"What? That's impossible! Ratigan never makes alliances, it could be said he works alone despite having several henchmen working for him. But those people are just tools."
"There is always a first time for everything."
"Excuse me, miss," Dawson said. "It's true that you just told us you and your boyfriend..."
"He's not my boyfriend!" Lady corrected immediately, getting fed up with the subject because it was always the same with them. "We are friends and a team, not a couple."
"Though..." Noir said.
"Don't start with that!"
"Sorry for the confusion," the doctor said quickly, seeing the young woman reaction. "I was saying that since you and your friend can't tell us who you really are, how do you make yourself known by looking like this?"
"Based on their outfits, they are obviously 'called' Catarina and Black Cat." Basil mocked.
The heroes looked annoyed at the detective.
"Actually we are Ladybug and Chat Noir, thank you," the heroine answered, getting angrier.
«No puedo creer que mi héroe favorito de Disney se comporte como un gran patán. Esto será más difícil de lo que pensé» (I can't believe my favorite Disney hero is behaving like a big jerk. This will be harder than I thought.)
"Your insect-themed is understandable," Basil said, waving at Ladybug's outfit. "But a cat? You have to be really crazy for that." the detective said the last thing pointing to his head with a finger and turning it in a crazy gesture.
Fed up with the detective's behavior, Chat Noir tried to approach him and give him what he deserved, but Ladybug stopped him and got in the middle of them.
"Putting aside the teasing regarding our looks and names, let's get back to the important stuff. As I was saying, Ratigan allied himself with a villain who calls himself Papillombre..."
"What?"
"We didn't name him, but it alludes to the butterfly and its dark power. Shadows. And we believe he empowered Ratigan and that's why we're here."
Nobody said anything after hearing that; however, the silence was immediately broken by Basil's laughter to which Ladybug and Chat Noir gave him a dirty look, it was more than obvious the detective was laughing at them because he didn't believe anything. The hero was going to yell at Basil when suddenly he heard something, by the expression of her companion the heroine knew immediately something was happening and Dawson also noticed, calling Basil's attention.
"Is something wrong young man?" Dawson asked.
"There's someone outside," the boy answered. "Footsteps are heard, but uneven. That is to say, as if it were one foot and..."
"A peg-leg," Ladybug and Basil said at the same time.
While Chat Noir, Basil, Dawson and Olivia looked out the window, Ladybug cautiously left the house, she knew who he was and she would catch him red-handed. The girl didn't see anything from the chair, she got down and went to the window without attracting the attention of the adults and the young man. As she did so, a bat hung upside down appeared before her and the little girl recognized him right away, he was the one who kidnapped her father.
She screamed in fright, and at once Fidget slammed into the window as if he'd been pushed, then was thrown out into the street. Suspecting his lady had something to do with it, Chat Noir left the house and locked it behind him.
"What are you doing!?" Basil asked excitedly as the door was slammed in his face as he followed the young man.
"You'll be safe here, we'll take care of it!" answered the hero and ran to help his companion.
The detective banged on the door angrily, went to his work table to find something to help him open the door. He wouldn't let slip the only clue he had to find the toymaker and his nemesis because of some brats with heroic delusions.
Outside 221½ Baker Street, Ladybug was waiting for Fidget, keeping an eye on the window. Now she thought about it, she didn't see any sense in the fact the bat had gone to Basil's house to look for Olivia, because how the hell did he know the girl went to the detective's house? If the scene was thought of that way so Basil would have a clue, she understood, but...
She heard noise among the plants. She crept closer and saw Fidget hanging upside down looking out the window. Almost immediately she heard Olivia scream, went to the bat, smashed his head against the glass to stun him and threw him into the street.
"It's over, Fidget!" said the coccinellid-rodent to the bat lying on the ground. "You're taking us to Ratigan's lair right now!"
"Ladybug!" The heroine looked over her shoulder and saw Chat Noir running towards her and was surprised to see neither Basil nor Dawson was behind him. Before she asked, the feline-rodent answered her. "I locked them in the house. As much as they were created by an akuma, plus I get angry at everything that 'detective' said, it's too dangerous for them."
"Merci chaton. Now Fidget."
The heroes took up their weapons and cautiously approached the bat. Fidget, still on the ground, started to laugh so the Miraculous bearers stopped and put their guard up. The henchman got up and faced the heroes.
"That's not how the story goes, Ladybug," Fidget said, but when he spoke, not only his voice was heard but someone else's as well.
"What the...?"
"Papillombre will be glad to know the sentimonsters have more tricks than he thinks. By the way, we don't need interruptions."
The door to 221½ Baker Street burst open, but before Basil and Dawson could get out, both mice suddenly froze in place, as if they had been petrified. Seeing them, Ladybug and Chat Noir looked at each other in confusion and then at the bat.
"What happen? What did you do?" Ladybug asked.
"Let's say I 'paused' the movie. It's not necessary for the girl to get involved where she is not called." answered the bat
"The girl?"
Suddenly an electric black and blue energy covered Fidget. When it disappeared, the bat had transformed into...
"Professor Ratigan!" Ladybug exclaimed.
The sentimonster laughed while looking superiorly at the heroes.
"Well, well. I'm glad to see you know who I am. That will make the game more interesting."
"We thought you were an akuma victim, not a sentimonster," Chat Noir said.
"Oh, I have an akuma with me! Fidget is the sentimonster, but for now he's playing the middleman." He looked the Miraculous bearers up and down and continued. "I'm glad to see you're playing your respective roles. Or at least Ladybug."
"What are you talking about?" asked the heroine
"You're dressed like a detective. As for Chat Noir, I think he needs to know more about that genre, but the clothes are not bad. So now I think I should call you Ladybug of Baker Street and Dr. Chat Noir." He laughed at his own joke.
The heroes looked at each other confused, but then Ladybug understood. Despite the fact Ratigan transformed the city and half of its inhabitants into mice, the professor didn't know he also created Basil and Dawson.
«Eso es un punto a nuestro favor» (That is a point in our favor.)
"Maybe you know who I am from the movie ads and still have a vague idea of what will happen, but I'm sure like many in this city you underestimate this story and you don't know what will happen." The professor continued.
Chat Noir was going to say something, but Ladybug nudged him to shut him up and answered the professor.
"It's not too hard to guess this is Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson versus Professor James Moriarty, but the characters are rodents. So it will be a piece of cake."
"HA! WITH THAT YOU JUST SEALED YOUR END!" Ratigan yelled triumphantly. "And in order not to be so mean to you, I'll let the story flow according to the movie. I will not involve the literary works of Eve Titus. If I were you, I'd use all my imagination... you'll need it." With that, Professor Ratigan was engulfed in black and electric blue energy and returned to SentiFidget.
Knowing the bat would escape, Ladybug pounced on it followed by Chat Noir. Unfortunately, SentiFidget took each of them by the wrist and spun them around. The heroes got seasick, but the coccinellid-rodent wouldn't give up. With difficulty, she reached a hand toward the bat's face. Seeing his enemy's action, SentiFidget released them, sending them directly to the entrance of 221½ Baker Street without realizing Basil and Dawson were leaving the house at very moment. The bat escaped, and the heroes landed on the mice.
"Oh my! What was that?" Dawson asked in pain, lying on the ground with something, or someone, on his belly.
"I'm so sorry doctor." Chat Noir apologized.
The feline-rodent got up and helped the doctor to his feet. Ladybug felt she bumped into something that luckily cushioned her fall and she was still lying on it. She heard moans below her, had she fallen on her partner? It couldn't be, the young man had landed on Dawson. She sat up and her dark brown eyes met green eyes... but they weren't Chat Noir's.
Basil was finally able to pick the lock and go out and catch that peg-legged rascal before those youngsters ruined everything. However, as soon as he came out something, or rather someone, collided with him and they both ended up on the ground with that person on top of him. He opened his eyes and met dark brown eyes framed in a red mask flecked with black.
Detective and heroine stared at each other, lost in each other's gaze.
"Basil, Ladybug, are you all right?" Dawson asked.
The doctor's voice woke them from their trance. With her ears completely red, the young woman stepped away from the mouse and quickly stood up.
"I'm sorry!"
The detective, also with red ears, stood up and cleared his throat, regaining his composure.
"It was nothing, miss."
"Youths, did you discover something? Did you see who was outside the window?" Dawson asked.
Hearing this, Basil carelessly brushed past the heroine followed by the doctor and the youngsters. Reaching the street, and to the detective's annoyance, Fidget was gone.
«Reckless brats! Because of them nonsense we lost Peg-leg!»
Despite his anger, Basil would not sit idly by. Fidget must have left some clue and those kids wouldn't have noticed, so he would take that chance. He looked around, seeing the sidewalk he knelt down to look closer, Fidget had left behind some muddy footprints.
"No sign of the blackguard anywhere." Dawson said, seeing the empty street and not noticing what Basil was doing.
"Not quite, Dawson. He left some rather unusual footprints. They obviously belong to the same fiend who abducted the girl's father Ratiganʼs peg-legged lackey."
Ladybug and Chat Noir were a safe distance from them. It was obvious that Fidget, or should they say SentiFidget, ran away as soon as he threw them at Basil and Dawson. The feline-rodent had several questions to ask his companion, but he couldn't do it in front of the mice.
The coccinellid-rodent watched the detective and doctor search the street, and seemed strange to her after finding the prints Dawson still hadn't found SentiFidget's beret. She clenched her fists and then realized she had something in her hand. She picked it up and saw she had that clue.
«A pesar del mareo logré quitarle su boina a ese murciélago» (Despite dizziness I managed to take his beret off that bat.)
"Do you think those prints will help us, Basil?" Dawson asked.
The detective got up and wiped his knees and hands.
"I'm afraid not," answered the detective, annoyed by the youths.
"But this maybe yes."
The mice turned and saw Ladybug showing them a worn black beret hanging from her index finger and a triumphant smile on her face. Basil ran to her and snatched the beret from her. He took his magnifying glass out of to examine it and ascertain it was from Fidget.
"Ah-ha! Excellent work, miss! Ha, ha, ha!" Immediately Basil ran towards the house, again brushing past the young woman carelessly.
In the doorway were Olivia and Mrs. Judson, who was comforting the girl.
"Now... there's nothing to be afraid of, my dear."
An excited Basil ran in. Mrs. Judson grabbed Olivia by the shoulders and pulled her back, glaring at the detective for her callousness. Dawson and the young heroes entered the house behind him.
"The scoundrel's quite gone." The doctor told Olivia.
"Ha-ha! But not for long, Miss Flamhammer." Basil assured, taking off his robe.
"Flaversham!" The girl corrected angrily.
"Whatever," Basil said lightly. "Now, we simply pursue our peg-legged friend until he leads us to the girl's father." Basil pulled his brown jacket from a grandfather clock and put it on.
"Then you'll get my daddy back?" Olivia asked excitedly as she ran to the detective and hugged him tightly from behind, making him double over from the weight.
"Yes!" Basil replied, uneasy at the girl's display of affection.
Ladybug tried to hold back a giggle at the look Basil gave her, clearly saying 'Get her off me!' Obviously the young woman didn't help him. Ears red with embarrassment, the detective pushed Olivia down and released his legs from her grasp.
"And quite soon, if I'm not mistaken," Basil continued, adjusting his clothes. He went to a suit of armor where his Inverness cape hung. He took it and put it on. "Now, hurry along, Dawson and young Chat Noir. We must be off to... Toby's."
"Toby's?" asked the doctor confused.
"What?" exclaimed the heroes
"Oh, you must meet him. He's just the chap for this." Basile said, taking his deerstalker from his armor and placing himself on his head.
"You...Y-Y-You want me to come?" Dawson asked incredulously.
"Ha!" Basil blew on the lens of his magnifying glass and wiped it clean on his sleeve. "I should think a stouthearted army mouse like you would leap at the chance for adventure."
"Oh, well, heh, heh. I-I-I am rather curious."
" Maybe I misunderstood your words, but I thought you were implying that Dawson and Chat Noir will go with you, but I don't." Ladybug commented indignantly.
"Indeed, Miss Ladybug. The case is dangerous and it's not a women's business," Basil replied.
"Pardon!?"
"Wait for me! I'm coming too!" Olivia warned ready to go out with her coat and scarf on.
The girl grabbed her hat that was on Basil's couch and under the violin, and ran after them. But in the process, she caused the violin to start to wobble and fall.
Basil gasped and dove to the ground, catching the instrument before it hit the ground.
"What? Certainly not!" said the detective looking over his shoulder at the girl. He rose to his knees and carefully returned the violin to the couch. "This is no business for children. And as I said, neither of women."
"Are we going to take a cab?" Olivia asked, taking several cheese crumpets from a tray.
"I told you, Chat Noir and I have an enemy. Both of us. So I'm going too, whether you like it or not," assured the coccinellid -gnawer. "And another thing, Olivia will go with us."
"WHAT!?" the men shouted
"From the beginning I knew what was wrong with your head, but now I see you are completely crazy!" Basil said. "I'm telling you this is not a women's business and that's why you can't come! Exactly why I say women shouldn't...!"
The detective fell silent abruptly as Ladybug tied him up with her yoyo. She walked over to him, tugged on Basil's green tie, bringing her face closer to his, only a few millimeters between them.
"Stop that stupid thing that women can or can't do and listen to me carefully," the young woman said in a low, but at the same time threatening tone that everyone present clearly heard. "I know you don't trust us, but get this one damn thing: Papillombre is extremely dangerous. I fully trust Chat Noir and I know he could handle the situation alone, but we are a team like Yin and Yang we need each other. Which makes it very clear I'm going with you."
»"And as for Olivia. Fidget knows she's here, and even though Mrs. Judson is in the house, that doesn't guarantee they'll be safe. We will protect Olivia no matter what it takes."
She stepped away from Basil, loosened his tie and released him from the yoyo. The detective looked at the young woman without any expression. She was right, he didn't trust them, but he mistrusted the girl more, and that increased when the young woman tried to capture Fidget on her behalf, making him understand Ladybug knew something that the others didn't. She was hiding something and a clue could be her stubbornness that Olivia accompanied them.
"Okay, you come with us." Basil said. "But the child stays."
"Are you deaf?" Ladybug asked. "I told you Olivia will accompany us."
"The truth is I want to go with Ladybug and Chat Noir," the girl interrupted, approaching the heroine and taking her by the hand. "I trust them and I want to help them find my father."
The coccinellid-rodent looked surprised and moved at the child, and affectionately squeezed the little girl's hand.
"Thanks Olivia."
Annoyed Basil sighed and put his hand to his forehead. Slightly annoyed, he gently took Olivia's free hand as he smiled and said quietly.
"My dear, I don't think you understand." He began to sit in his couch. "It will be quite dangerous."
There was the creak of wood and the tinkling of strings as soon as Basil sat down. The detective's eyes widened and his face expressed surprise, as did Olivia, Dawson and Chat Noir. As for Ladybug... she smirked as she quietly said 'karma'. She couldn't believe how distracted Basil was after he was the one to return the violin to the couch, but knowing this part she decided to let it flow normally as a little punishment for the detective.
Basil grunted bitterly and pulled out the ruined instrument, displaying it.
"Why you... Look at..." He growled and took a deep breath, trying to control his anger. After Basil collected himself, he smiled as he stood up and said to the heroine in a strained voice. "Miss Ladybug"
"Yes, Mr. Basil?" The young woman said in a sweet tone while smiling.
"Oh, oh. This is bad» Chat Noir thought, knowing his lady's tone of voice didn't mean anything good.
"The child is most definitely not accompanying us."
"Olivia is coming. End of discussion."
Basil was furious. Never before in his life had he met someone so... stubborn and infuriating! Were all women like this? The foreign ones? Or just that... foreign woman?
"I am in charge of this investigation, since it is about finding the father of this young lady...
"¡Ay no inventes!" (Oh, don't invent!)
"... and what I say is done! And I say you will come with us and the child will not!" Basil declared, stamping his foot. "AND THAT IS FINAL!"
Ladybug smiled. She always wanted to know how Basil finally gave in to having Olivia accompany them, but she supposed the writers couldn't find arguments and for that reason they decided to omit the scene.
«Ya verá como Olivia viene SÍ o SÍ» (You'll see how Olivia comes YES or YES) thought the coccinellid -rodent triumphantly.
=====================MDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMD======================
Basil stealthily opened the mousetrap at Sherlock Holmes's residence and peered out to make sure there nobody around. The detective looked annoyed and resigned at Olivia, who innocently opened the mousetrap completely. Ladybug and Chat Noir looked over the little girl's head with great curiosity. Basil glared at the young woman and then rolled his eyes, couldn't believe he would allow that stubborn woman to bring the child with them. It was absurd and downright dangerous!
"And not a word out of either of you" Basil warned the girl and the youngsters. "Is that clear?"
Olivia gave him a hush, Ladybug covered Basil's mouth with her hand when she saw a pair of gigantic shadows approaching. She pulled him towards her without letting go and Chat Noir closed the mousetrap leaving a small slit to observe the outside. The heroes suppressed a gasp in time to see the real Sherlock Holmes and John Watson.
"I observe that there's a good deal of German music on the program." the famous detective told his partner. "It is introspective, and I want to introspect."
"But Holmes, that music is so frightfully dull." the doctor protested.
"Come along."
Once Holmes and Watson exited 221B Baker Street, Ladybug slowly released Basil as she sighed in relief as Chat Noir did. The detective wiped his mouth with the back of his hand in disgust, a gesture the heroine took note of and glared at Basil.
"Don't be dramatic! I didn't kiss you."
"God save the queen may that never happen!"
Chat Noir opened the mousetrap completely to end the discussion, plus he didn't like what his lady said despite the clear sarcastic tone she used. They came out of the mousetrap one by one. Basil, at the head of the group, was walking calmly with his hands behind his back and calling out to Toby.
The Miraculous bearers looked around in amazement. It felt so strange to see everything so big.
"Whoa. I'll admit of everything we've been through so far, this is the most fascinating." Chat Noir admitted.
"I know! And we finally got to see the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend and partner Dr. John Watson in person!" Ladybug said excitedly.
Of all his missions, the feline-rodent had never seen his mate so ecstatic.
"You really enjoy all of this, despite Basil's rude behavior."
That comment made Ladybug return to earth. That act of the detective reminded her Silver and Gold fanfiction, originally written by Lilgrimmapple and continued by Bookwriter94. Remembering that unsettled her mind.
«Ratigan dijo que la película seguiría su curso, pero al intervenir Chat Noir y yo creáremos una trama totalmente diferente. Me pregunto ¿qué tanto podría cambiar? Espero que esa rata no lo use a su favor.» (Ratigan said the movie would run its course, but with Chat Noir and I stepping in, we're going to create a totally different plot. I wonder how much could change? I hope that rat doesn't use it to his advantage.)
"How much do you think?"
"Huh?"
Chat Noir saw his friend was downcast when he told her about the detective, but then her expression changed as if she suddenly remembered something and then meditative. If she made a plan, it would be best to share it with him so they know what to do.
"Ladybug"
"Oh! Is nothing. I just remembered something."
The hero made sure the three mice were far away from them before continuing.
"Ratigan said he would focus on the film. But it turns out it's a book too?"
"Books, actually. And the truth is the film is based on these. Unfortunately, I've never read them because I couldn't find them. But, to our good luck, since it's just the movie, this will be a piece of cake. An advert."
"What?"
"You already understood the story is not 'as childish' as you thought, but doesn't mean it is still a Disney classic."
"And the 'but' is..."
"No matter what happens, how bad things look, the hero is always saved and triumphs."
"That doesn't make me feel better, quite the opposite. What will happen?"
Before Ladybug could reply, thunderous footsteps approached them. When the heavy footsteps stopped, Basil happily announced:
"Ahh! Here he is now!"
Towering over them, tongue lolling from its mouth, was an excited basset hound. He had light brown fur on his back with a brown patch, brown ears and nose with peach fur on the front, and wore a blue collar with a dog tag around his neck.
Ladybug watched Toby fascinated while Chat Noir did nervously, never in his life would he have imagined he would have a giant dog in front of him.
Basil watched the reactions of the youngsters. He smiled when he saw the boy nervous, but his smile disappeared when he saw happiness on the girl's face. So he would give her a little scare. He stood behind her and pushed her towards Toby, startling her at the detective's unexpected move.
"Ladybug, this is Toby."
The young woman approached the hound and gave him a friendly pat on the nose.
"Hi Toby, nice to meet you."
Suddenly Toby's muzzle pushed her making her scream and stumble back a little. He sniffed her eagerly and his tail thrashed vigorously becoming immediately attached to this new sweet scented stranger. Toby licked Ladybug from head to toe, lifting her Inverness cape, her bangs, and her deerstalker.
"Ugh! ¡Guácala de gato bodeguero!" Ladybug yelled with disgust, she wiped her face and adjusted her hair, hat and cape. Toby didn't stop there, he continued to lick the girl, knocking her to the ground. "Stop!" The heroine asked between laughs.
As expected, neither Dawson nor Olivia understood what the young woman said because they didn't speak Spanish. Basil did speak the language thanks to his work, but Ladybug's words puzzled him because he had never heard anything like that. And Chat Noir... he was laughing out loud at the reactions of the three mice, especially the detective. Thanks to the time he had known her lady, he understood almost all the Mexican slang she used, but he was also amused to see her battling with Toby.
"Instead of laughing, help me!"
"S-sorry, My Lady."
Chat Noir managed to stop laughing, but still keeping a mocking smile on his face, he approached his partner. Toby sniffed something, left the young woman alone, and followed his trail to the source of that strong scent. The feline-rodent stopped when he saw the gigantic dog approaching him, he backed away slowly as the hound approached him until he was facing him.
"Nice... doggy."
Toby sniffed at Chat Noir and, just like Ladybug, licked him from head to toe lifting his frock coat and the strands of hair that framed his face. Seeing him, the heroine laughed while the enraged hero wiped off the dog's saliva and arranged his clothes and hair.
"Apparently your dog took a liking to the youngsters." Dawson commented.
Basil didn't say anything, just snorted. He was a little disappointed because he was hoping by using Toby he would prove those two could be some kind of criminals instead of 'heroes', but seeing the hound liked them made the suspicion go away. Still, it didn't mean he trusted them, emphasis on the girl, because the feeling that Ladybug was hiding something persisted. Either way, he had to gather evidence on the case... and incidentally on the youngsters.
Ladybug came to Chat Noir's rescue, still taunting her partner.
"Are you okay? asked the heroine, trying in vain to contain her laughter.
"Obviously not," the hero replied annoyed. "Once again this proves I'm more of a cat person than a dog person."
"And the Black Cat Miraculous has nothing to do with it, right?"
"Exactly."
Basil cleared his throat, stepped up behind Dawson and pushed him toward the hound to introduce him. Toby snorted at the new scent and tilted his head back, eyeing the good-natured mouse curiously.
"Dawson... Toby."
Dawson laughed nervously as Toby sniffed him cautiously. He took off his hat in salute.
"Charmed, I'm sure." the doctor greeted, patting the dog's nose.
Instantly, Toby began growling at Dawson as he nuzzled him, baring his teeth at the doctor. Seeing that, Basil ran to Dawson's rescue pushing Toby back.
"Now Toby! Toby, stop that! Toby, cease! Desist! Ha!" Dawson darted between Ladybug and Chat Noir and hide behind the leg of a red couch. The doctor leaned out, trembling with fear. "Tsk, tsk, tsk , tsk, tsk, tsk. Frightfully sorry, old man. Toby has the most splendid sense of smell of any hound Iʼve trained. But he can be deucedly frisky. Ha, ha!
Basil couldn't help but wonder why Toby accepted the youngsters so easily and reacted aggressively to Dawson. A doctor! A man who helped save lives, for God's sake. Maybe Dawson smelled strongly of medicine and Toby didn't like it. If it was for that, what would those two smell like that the dog loved?
Toby kept sniffing and his nose took him to a footrest where Olivia was hidden behind the fringes and all was visible was her legs. The girl gingerly parted the fringes as if it was curtains, and seeing who Toby was, she smiled broadly.
"Hello, Toby," the little girl greeted, patting his nose. The dog sniffed at her and she laughed merrily. "Silly doggy!" Olivia reached into her coat pocket and asked the dog with a smile. "Would you like a crumpet?"
Toby nodded excitedly as he panted in response. Olivia took one of Mrs. Judson's crumpet out of her pocket and offered it to him. In an instant, the crumpet was gone after a lick, much to the dog's liking.
"Here now, Toby? Toby!" Basil called, reaching into his pocket for Fidget's beret. "To the matter at hand. I want you to- " He gasped as he looked up to see Toby lying on his back, getting a tummy rub from Ladybug and Olivia.
The moment was interrupted by a loud whistle. Toby stopped and looked at Basil, who was frowning at him, arms crossed, his foot tapping impatiently and clearing his throat. Ladybug sighed and thought the detective was a spoilsport. She slid off the hound's stomach and landed on her feet next to Chat Noir and Dawson. Olivia also slid off Toby and landed in the heroine's arms.
The dog stood up and looked obediently at Basil.
"Good. Now Toby!" Basil said with satisfaction, and reached into his pocket again. "Toby... I want you to find..." he pulled out SentiFidget's beret right in front of the dog "this fiend!"
Toby growled angrily as he narrowed his eyes and showed his sharp teeth. Basil smiled. Finally, he was getting the right reaction.
"Yes! You know his type." He prodded Toby, grunting along with him. "A villain! raw! A scoundrel!" He raised the hat, making Toby stand up, still looking at the object. Basil got down on all fours on the floor with Toby doing the same as he continued to growl. "Low brow. Close set eyes. Broken wing." The dog stopped growling, completely lost at the last part. "Oh, heʼs a peg-legged bat with a broken wing." the detective clarified by hanging his own arm as an example.
As Basil interacted with Toby, the others watched them.
"What is he doing?" Olivia whispered to Ladybug, who watched the whole scene between embarrassed and amused by the detective's actions.
"To make a fool of himself," Chat Noir answered since he had heard the child.
The coccinellid-rodent rolled her eyes and returned her attention to the little girl.
"He's making Toby memorize Fidget's smell so we can find him." Ladybug whispered with a smile.
This was the Basil she remembered and liked, and not the cocky know-it-all mouse. The fun-loving, comedic detective who was so absorbed in his passion that he didn't even realize how silly and unorthodox he was acting. They growled back to the ground, Toby's fur rising from the back of his neck. The girls had a fit of laughter and Chat Noir crossed his arms and rolled his eyes in annoyance. Luckily for them, Basil was too busy irritating Toby to notice.
"Yes! Raw! Yes! Raw, raw! Thatʼs the spirit! Got his scent?" Basil waved the hat in the air. Toby nodded excitedly, understanding the task and the details. "Good boy, good boy!" Basil yelled in excitement. He picked up Toby's leash to attach it to the dog's collar. But once again, Toby wasn't paying attention. The dog turned to Dawson, Olivia, Ladybug and Chat Noir.
Basil frowned and quickly ran in front of Toby, nearly pushing the young heroes out of the way. The Miraculous bearers glared at the detective.
"Miss Flamchester!" Basil said.
"Flaversham!" Olivia, Dawson, Ladybug and Chat Noir corrected angrily .
"Whatever." The detective replied nonchalantly, placing the leash on the hound's tag. "Your father is as good as found." He turned his attention back to the dog. "Toby..." The dog struck a 'pointer' pose, ready to run on Fidget's trail. "Sic 'em!"
At first Ladybug was going to let Toby crush Basil like he did in the movie, again as karma, for being an idiot. But seeing it about to happen from her angle was much more terrifying than from the other side of the screen. Fear for the detective's safety led the heroine to grab him by the back of his Inverness cape and yank him back just in time as Toby's paw surged forward.
Basil stared at her, stunned she had just saved him. Before he could understand, the leash he was holding knocked him off the ground and Ladybug, who forgot to drop the Inverness cape, was dragged with him. She screamed and wrapped her arms around the detective's torso as Toby ran them out of the room. Without thinking, Basil hugged her with his free arm around her waist, keeping her from falling.
"Ah-ha!" Basil laughed out loud. "Yoinks! Tally ho! Ha-ha! Ha-ha!"
Olivia, Dawson and Chat Noir ran after them and heard Ladybug yell:
"Better shut up and make him stop! ¡Nos vamos a matar!" (We are going to kill us!)
