2. Incompatible [Midorima Shintarou]

After seeing how I recalled an entire match after seeing it once and analysed the moves and skills of the players, Otsubo senpai insisted that I should join the basketball team as a manager since the post was currently vacant.

My school, Shutoku High had a strong basketball team and they were known as the king of veterans since they made it into the nationals every year- but that was as far as my knowledge went about my own high school basketball team. I went to see one or two of their matches and that was it. I was way too lazy to join a club; and a sports club at that as a manager when I hated hard working more than anything.

Otsubo senpai was a senior I greatly respected so it wasn't possible for me to decline his earnest request. So, during lunch break after I finished eating my lunch, I found myself standing in front the gym instead of dozing off in my empty classroom like I usually do; gawking at the almost twenty boys who were shuttle running inside the gym and looking like as if they were on their last breath.

Being a laid back person to the bone, I was instantly scared of seeing such a sight before my eyes and took a step back cautiously. Before I could make a run for it and never look back again, I heard a familiar booming voice call out my name.

Once I looked back I saw Otsubo senpai grinning and waving at me enthusiastically.

And after that there was no looking back. I sighed and walked inside.

"Coach, she's the one I told you about." Otsubo senpai literally gushed at the older man who was looking at me.

I bowed and introduced myself.

After the coach asked me a few things about basketball and some questions to judge my strategy making abilities, I officially became the manager of the team.

The players introduced themselves and there were three third year and two first year players on the regular team and both of the first years were from my class.

"I never knew you were interested in basketball." Takao said addresseing me.

"I wasn't and still not but Otsubo senpai here thinks I have great abilities or something so he made me join the team." I explained, already feeling exhausted by explaining all this stuffs.

"Sure, you do. Be more confident!" Otsubo senpai encouraged me and seeing his determined face I didn't have the heart to tell him that the problem wasn't with my level of confidence but it was my lack of interest.

"In my opinion, taking in someone who's not fully devoted to basketball as a manager will not bring us the best results nanodayo." Midorima said, pushing his glasses on the bridge of his nose with his taped fingers.

"Oh shut up, you Oha-asa freak!" I scowled and felt immense pleasure when I saw his veins popped in annoyance. "I don't think the first years have any say in these decisions, idiot."

"Who are you calling idiot nanodayo?!"

Midorima glared at me while Takao almost fell down from laughing too much.

"Oh, she's good!" Miyaji senpai came up to me grinning and pat me on my back. "You know these two?" He asked pointing at Midorima and Takao.

"Unfortunately, yes," I shrugged. "The zodiac freak and the prankster. They are in my class."

"I told you million times to stop calling me such vulgar names nanodayo!" Midorima said angrily.

"I don't think you told me million times."

"It's just a figure of speech, baka!"

Takao just kept laughing in the background as the tall green haired boy and I kept bickering back and forth.

"You two don't really seem like on good terms." Kimura senpai interrupted scratching his shaved head. "Did anything happen between you two?"

Midorima huffed fixing his glasses for the umpteenth time and looked away in annoyance. I mimicked him and earned a couple of snorts and stifled laughs.

"Well, apparently, she broke Shin-chan's lucky item on their first meeting. A clay pot, was it?" Takao explained once he finished laughing.

"Yes. A clay pot from the feudal lord era." Midorima confirmed, visibly irritated at recalling the memory. "And for the record, I ended up being unlucky for the entire day because of that nanodayo."

"It wasn't because of that!" I argued back. "And in my defense, it was completely an accident and I said sorry numerous times for that stupid thing."

"It wasn't a stupid thing!"

I remembered that we hadn't been on good terms since our first meeting.
He was the kind of person who wanted everything prim and perfect while I was the laid back and lazy type who hated rules and regulations. Plus, he was a superstitious person; a trait I gravely despised. And it didn't do any of us any good when we were on the same class and the seat arrangement placed us together with him behind me. Talk about irony.

"After that, she once stole Shin-chan's Tenjin shrine pencil before a pop quiz because he refused to lend it to her." And as Takao said laughing, everyone gasped at that.

I tried to justify my actions once again. "W-well, I asked him nicely before stealing it from him. It's not my fault that he's such a stuck up."

"A person should work hard instead of relying on something else if he wants to achieve something nanodayo." He preached and I rolled my eyes at him.

He was such a square.

"And that's how they ended up becoming each other's archenemy." Takao ended dramatically.

"Don't make me laugh. She's not even worthy of my tim--"

"You can laugh?" I cut him off.

He glared at me angrily but continued anyhow ignoring me. "She's not even worth the time should I spend on despising her tactics. And she's not even on the same level as me for making her my enemy nanodayo."

"And here I thought we could be friends!" I clutched my shirt and mocked sarcastically.

Takao and the seniors burst out laughing. Though the captain facepalmed himself.

"Come on! You have to get along if you're going to be part of the same team." Otsubo senpai adviced.

Honestly, I had no such plans on getting along with Midorima Shintarou as I enjoy teasing his nanodayo ass way too much. So, I shrugged and rolled my lips.

"That's impossible." Midorima said pushing up his glasses.

"Why?"

"We are fundamentally incompatible." He said like the wise piece of shit he thought he was. I snorted.

"What do you mean, Midorima?" Miyaji senpai asked, utterly confused; he mirrored everyone's expressions.

"She's blood type A. I'm B. And I'm Cancer and she's Aquarius. Astrologically, we're not compatible." Midorima stated and everyone in the room except Takao stared at him dumbfounded since the black haired hawk eye was so busy laughing that he seemed like at the verge of tears.

"See what I have to deal with everyday, senpai?" I asked everyone gesturing to the beyond annoyed green haired boy in front of me and shook my head sighing dramatically.

Everyone chuckled while Midorima grunted in visible annoyance.

Before the green haired boy could retort back, the coach came back and interrupted us. "Okay, enough chit chat. Go back to practice now," Then he called out my name, "we have a practice match this week against Senshinkan High. I want you to collect the data of our opponent, analyse them thoroughly and come up with the best strategy."

"Yes, sir!"

_

Aftet the practice match against the Senshinkan High- who were known as the king of the west I came to know later- I was completely convinced that there was no need for me or a manager in general sense for my school basketball team. Shutoku High was already an incredibly strong team and the difference between both teams in strength just ended up reflecting on the scoreboard. However, it was kinda given since a member of the Generation of miracles was a part of our team who became even more scarier with his hawk eyed team mate.

As much as I didn't get along with Midorima Shintarou and liked to annoy him beyond his sanity, I acknowledged his ferocious talent. He was simply unbeatable on the court- unless it was another member of the generation of miracles- once he starts shooting those high projectile three pointers.

I chuckled on my own remembering his way too high shots, when I was on my way home after the match ended.

"They are just way too high!" I said to myself before chuckling some more.

"Ooh! Isn't that the cute manager of Shutoku!"

Normally, I'd take it as a simple compliment and smile but the way the unfamiliar voice uttered the words so lewdly and suggestively, I couldn't help the cold shiver that suddenly ran down my spine. I slowly glanced behind me and saw three high school boys wearing Senshinkan High uniforms.

I sighed. "What is it that you want?"

My scowling face surprisingly made them burst out laughing then approached me smirking down at me. "Heh, she seems feisty."

The way they wore their uniforms all messy told me that they weren't exactly the diligent and ideal students of the school.

I tentatively took a step back when I saw them striding towards me. "Come on, cutie. Let's play for some time. I'm sure you're tired and all after the game. We're gonna have some fun."

"Uhm, no thank you. I'm tired that's true but I don't feel like playing with you right now." I tried to move away but I was suddenly backed against a wall.

The three guys were hovering over me and two of them placed their hands both of my sides on the wall. They were smirking down at me like a gang of lewds and I didn't actually have to be a genius to figure what exactly they were thinking to do.

"Look, I'm gonna scream if you don't back off now." I didn't let my voice tremble no matter how scared I was.

"Of course, we're not gonna back off. We're gonna make you scream louder than you ever did." The guy who was in front of me whispered into my ears and the other three laughed out loud.

My cheeks flushed in shame at how they twisted my words and my scalp pricked with flaming anger. "Why you little---"

I raised my hand to slap the pervert across his face when he caught it in the air and came even closer to me. "The feisty ones are always fun..." He muttered lowly.

He was coming even closer and closer...

Then I suddenly heard a very deep familiar voice call out my name. The three guys snapped their heads towards the source of the voice including me.

Midorima was standing there in his black Shutoku uniform with his hands pushed inside his black pants. "What are you doing here?"

I looled at the guy who was standing in front of me, closer than ever and holding my hand, then I looked at Midorima again incredulously. "What do you think I am doing, you dumbass?!"

His face didn't scrunch in annoyance like he usually do whenever I talk like that. "Are these your friends?"

"NO! Are you an idiot or something?! They're harassing me here, dude!"

Then the green haired boy looked at the three guys who were silent until now. His emerald eyes were colder than I've ever seen. "I hope you have better things to do than harassing a helpless person."

'Who did he just called helpless?? I very much stood to my ground until the end humph."

The guy released the grip on my wrist and took a few steps back from me including the other two. When I looked at them, I saw them trembling slightly.

"Leave her alone before I call the authorities of your school." Midorima stated coldly as if he was to rip off their heads.

I thought the perverts gonna fight or something but then I heard one of them whisper among themselves, "Dude, I think we should run."

"She could've tell us this monster was her boyfriend sooner."

"HE'S NOT!" I screamed.

They jumped a little at my loud scream then quickly turned around and ran out of the place.

Midorima and I stood there for some time without exchanging any words.

"Let's go." With that he pushed the glasses on the bridge of his nose, turned around and started walking ahead of me.

But he wasn't walking too fast so I ran and caught up with him quickly. We walked side by side.

I rubbed around my left wrist to soothe the pain. The guy gripped it too tightly and now it slightly turned red because of that. "Why are you here though?" I asked.

He looked at me with the corner of his eyes. "You were late and Otsubo senpai was worrying. So he sent me to check." His green eyes lowered down to my wrist. "Is your hand alright?"

"Yeah. It's fine. Just a little..." I trailed off.

"Go see the nurse when we reach the school nanodayo."

"I will."

Then we were walking silently side by side once again. None of us spoke a words until it hit me.

I narrowed my eyes at the green haired tsundere and smirked mischievously. He sensed my eyes on him then turned to me.

"What?" He asked annoyed.

"Midorima," I lowered my voice. "Are you worried about me?"

He closed his eyes and sighed in exasperation as if he had enough of me. "Stop dreaming and walk faster. We're going to be late nanodayo." Then he started walking faster than before.

I laughed out loud before running up to him. "Wait for me!"
