Rise of Godly Beings
Ladybug scouted out the area of the lower section of the museum, but Pharoah was nowhere to be found. She did bump into Carapace, but they'd split up to cover more ground. She'd explained the Chat Noir situation and found he was actually less irritated about it as she was. Carapace trusted that Chat Noir had to have a good reason behind his action and should be forgiven. Ladybug couldn't see it like that.
Plagg was gone for a while, and Ladybug found she was disappointed when he returned. His return meant that Chat Noir was still being a brat who couldn't bother to show up or even put on his ring. Ladybug was furious about that.
"So you mentioned that if Pharaoh gave himself the head of Seth, something bad would happen? Why?" Ladybug asked as she and Plagg were scouting the Louvre for any sign of Pharaoh.
"Seth is... well to put it plainly, he's the god of war, evil, and death."
"Is he real?" Ladybug asked.
"No, no, not at all. But the idea of him is, therefore, if Pharaoh can harness that power, essentially, Seth could be real in that moment," Plagg explained. "He has power over the movement of the earth, general chaos and destruction, eclipse, and whatnot."
"Sounds like he's you," Ladybug remarked.
"No, he's not," Plagg grumbled.
"You know a lot about Egyptian mythology then?"
"I've been alive for practically a million years, what do you expect?" Plagg said.
"Ok well, on a different note, what's going on with Chat?" Ladybug asked. Plagg winced.
"Lets focus on finding Pharaoh."
"Ok, but-"
"THERE YOU ARE!" a dark voice hissed from above. Both Plagg and Ladybug were tackled to the ground by Pharaoh who had the face of Sekhmet. Plagg made no hesitation to swing around and grab the lioness goddess by the throat and switch their positions, pinning Pharaoh to the ground.
"Trust me kid, you don't want to mess with me!" Plagg said sharply. Ladybug found it weird he called him a kid, though, Julil was in fact a very young adult, and most certainly a child on Plagg's grand scale of life.
"You meddle with the power of the gods by even touching me!" Pharaoh roared.
"And you meddle with the power of eternal beings of the universe by opposing me!" Plagg retaliated.
"Sobek! Give me the Nile!" Pharaoh exclaimed. His head was transformed into the head of a golden crocodile. While still pinned by Plagg, he waved his hands upwards and suddenly, water from seemingly nowhere broke through the tiles of the museum floor and forced Plagg away. Pharaoh rose into the air, hands placed openly at his side, controlling the water in the air, forming a halo around his entire body.
"Plagg!" Ladybug shrieked. The water came after her. Even as she used her yoyo to try and escape, it came at her like the water from a fire hydrant, crushing her into the wall of the museum's upper level. Pharaoh returned his attention to Plagg, raising himself higher in the air as he flew over his body. Plagg was barely able to sit himself up when Pharaoh crushed him with the pressure of water again.
"Power of eternal beings, eh?" Pharaoh laughed in amusement. "How cute."
"Plagg!" Ladybug called out, "fight back with your power!"
Listening to her, Plagg carved his way through the water and he too rose into the air, now level with Pharaoh. His gaze was sharp and angry, and he had his lips curled into an angry snarl, revealing the fact that he had very sharp pointed teeth.
"Am-heh! Bring me retribution!" Pharaoh cried. The water disappeared as his head transformed into a golden plated dog. Water was replaced with fire and suddenly the room was up in flames. "Eternal beings! I am the devourer of eternity!"
Plagg responded to the fire with his fist, channeling the fire back at Pharaoh. He wasn't using his own powers, Ladybug noticed. But Pharaoh was distracted by Plagg, and paid no mind to her. She knew how to make herself useful.
With her yoyo, Ladybug swung herself to the ground level Plagg and Pharaoh fought on. She leapt down, she tossed her yoyo around Pharaoh's neck, tightening it with her fall and slamming him into the earth which cracked under his might. With Am-heh's power, Pharaoh sent thousands of hands belonging to corpses of the dead to spring from the ground, mauled and bloody, and grabbed her where she was, bringing her to the ground. He sent a trail of fire after her.
Squirming in panic, Ladybug tried to loosen the grip of the hands which kept her to the ground. Just as the fire was about to reach her, someone descended from above. Carapace.
"Shield!" Carapace cried out, forming his forearms into an X in front of him. He ducked his head as the fire reached him, using his body to part it like the waves of the red sea. Ladybug had nearly forgotten Carapace's power of shield, which could increase his resistance to things, and therefore, made him immune to Pharaoh's fire.
"Carapace!" Ladybug choked out. Carapace, once the fire seized, focused on her, tearing her away from the hands of corpses.
"Come on, we need to get out of here!" Carapace said, once Ladybug was on her feet.
"Are there people in the museum?"
"I evacuated as many as I could-"
Fire encased all exits of the room, and Pharaoh was torpedoing right towards the two heroes. They ducked out of the way, barely being missed by him. Carapace said a few curse words as he drew his shield from off his back, placing it in front of himself for protection. Ladybug, narrowing her gaze on Pharaoh, aimed her yoyo at him and launched it, taking hold of his wrist and pulling him back to the earth where he crashed through a glass window.
"Shit, he's outside now!" Ladybug exclaimed as her yoyo returned to her. Without a word, Plagg was already breaking through another window himself to keep Pharaoh grounded.
"Anhur! Give me war!" Pharaoh exclaimed. His head now became that of a mighty lion with golden mane caressing his shoulders. A massive double bladed ax formed in his hand which he struck Plagg with, taking him out of the skies. Plagg was unwounded. Perhaps it was impossible to make a kwami bleed. However, he appeared to be in a lot of pain from this. He picked himself up off the ground and their brawl continued.
"Jesus christ, what would we do without Plagg?" Carapace exclaimed.
"We'd have Chat Noir," Ladybug grumbled. "Now come on, he's gonna need help."
Grabbing Carapace by the wrist, Ladybug used her yoyo to take the two to the top of the out glass of the Louvre. They studied Pharaoh and Plagg from above, trying to come up with a plan.
"What do we do?" Ladybug asked.
"Could you use your lucky charm?" Carapace asked.
"I don't want to yet, I don't feel like it would be useful right now," Ladybug remarked.
"We can't do this on our own," Carapace said with panic in his voice. "We have Plagg, at least. But we need Rena Rouge. But how do we even find her?!"
"You don't have to look," said a voice behind them. They both turned and there she was. Rena Rouge. "I'm here..."
"Wow..." Ladybug said out loud. This was only the second time she'd ever seen Rena Rouge, and though they'd never fought alongside each other, Ladybug already felt more confident with her.
"I figured it would be better if we worked together," Rena Rouge said. "I'm not going to be hiding behind the scenes anymore, I promise."
"This is great!" Crapace exclaimed. She winced upon hearing his voice, and avoided looking at him. "Alright, you have power over illusion and nightmares, right?! What if we somehow trick Pharaoh into giving us his akuma?"
"That would be difficult," Ladybug said. "What kind of illusion would even lead him to do that?"
"I don't know," Rena Rouge stated. "And I've detected all his fears, but they're fading fast."
"What do you mean they're fading?" Ladybug asked.
"With his new power and strength... all his fears are disappearing. Like... there's nothing that can scare him."
"Fuck. Is there even any small fear?"
"I think maybe... he's afraid of the gods he's mimicking here. It wasn't there before, but he's developed a new fear in his subconscious that if he keeps using this power... he'll upset the gods they belong to and be punished for it."
"That's... perfect for us!" Ladybug exclaimed.
"I'd wait to use it against him though. It's not that strong of a fear yet, it'll be more useful once he's used the power of more and more gods," Rena Rouge advised.
"Great, but you'll have to tell us when that is so we're ready to play along with it," Ladybug said.
"Perhaps when he uses the power of Ra. You know, the sun god? He's supposedly the most powerful and respected, so it would make the most sense to use your ability on him then."
"IF he chooses to use the power of Ra," Rena Rouge stated.
"True, but I am sure he will be tempted to at some point."
"So it's a plan?" Carapace asked.
"Let's hope it works."
***
Pollen, the kwami of subjection, was in a very foul mood.
The sanctuary of kwamis was in distress after the events of Gamer. They'd quickly figured out that Chat Noir was now aware of his third power, but just didn't know what it was. It caused a lot of anxiousness among the kwamis who were beginning to regret having sent Plagg out in the first place. Pollen had been continuously insisting they send her miraculous out for the backup of the other heroes, but the sanctuary continuously denied her of this pleasure.
She was too valuable to them, of course. And she was fully aware of this and did like to bring it up often. She was the last kwami from the 2nd ring that remained at the sanctuary. She was too precious to be thrown out to the world, and the kwamis would rather send anyone out there but her.
But the divine woman, Pollen, was not going to have this. She was not going to be told what to do by these "know it alls." She was going to get her way whether they liked it or not. Pompous scum, she would call them.
However, Pollen was no good when it came to mischief. That behavior was to be left up to the cat kwamis, Roaar and Plagg, as well as Trixx and normally Dusuu. But with three of the golden four gone, someone had to uphold the balance and stir up drama at the sanctuary. For Pollen though, it wasn't for good fun, but rather for attention (which is what the golden four would ordinarily cause mayhem for anyways).
It was usually up to Wayzz to guard the Miracle Box in its quarters, the reading room. He was almost always there anyways. But of course, not anymore. So Sass had taken up the role of being the guardian, since Master Fu was getting old and forgetful. That was a problem for Pollen.
She needed to run away and make someone into a hero. But in order to do that, she needed the bee miraculous. And in order to acquire that, she needed access to the miracle box. If Wayzz were here instead of Sass, it would be easy. Wayzz could make a forcefield around the box at most, but nothing else after that. And with her kwami powers, Pollen could easily reach through the shield. With Sass, however, she could get trapped in a time loop and he'd always know she was coming. There was no telling how many times he'd lived a moment that everyone else was experiencing for the first and only ever time.
She couldn't let herself be seen.
It was the dead of night, and most of the kwamis were out on the back patio enjoying the chillness of the November night. Pollen was sure she was the only one left in the sanctuary as she made her way to the reading room. The room was dark but the miracle box lay on a small quaint dresser, illuminated by the glow of the city lights outside, almost like a spotlight. She approached, but sensed someone behind her. She quickly spun around, ready to fight.
"Before we begin, just know that I've already done this dance with you seven times," said Sass. His fins caressed his head and lay flat against his back almost like he had thick dark hair.
Pollen moved to strike, summoning her power of venom to her fingertips as she went for the kill. Sass quickly moved her hand aside, spinning her and pinning her back against his chest with her hand held above her head. She changed her magic to transition to her other hand, and attempted to jab him in his thigh. This, too, was also deflected, and she lost use of both of her hands.
Angrily, Pollen swung her head back, hoping to hit him in the jaw. But as usual, it was predicted, and he lifted her off the ground and swung her in the air so that she was facing him, dangling. She tried kicking him but he kept her at a good distance. She flailed a little more before trying something new.
She summoned her second power, toxicant, which allowed her to generate any poison of her choice. She decided to use tetrodotoxin, so that she could force his muscles to relax and stun him into paralysis. She spewed it from her mouth, but before it so much as even escaped her lips, he jerked away and dropped her.
"I've gotta ask," Sass chuckled as Pollen regathered herself, "in every redo I create of this fight, you always resort to toxicant after fighting physically. I mean, it's more powerful than trying to kick me, is it not?"
"I'd rather not poison my friends," Pollen glowered. "And I'd also like for you to not use your time loops on me."
"I can't let you run away. We've already released too many of us."
"It wasn't like this two hundred years ago," Pollen said objectively. "It didn't matter how many of our jewels were in use at the same time, or how far apart we were. Master Fu changed things."
"Master Fu is questionable but now it is more important to follow him than ever. We can't risk losing all the miraculous to Hawkmoth," Sass said sternly.
"And how are we supposed to get the two we lost back if we don't give it everything we've got?! Tikki and Plagg are out there and we've gotten nowhere!" Pollen exclaimed.
"Pollen, throwing you out there isn't going to change a thing," Sass said.
"Fine, be like that," Pollen said, narrowing her brows. She huffed and secretly, filled her cheeks with the poison, belladonna. She wrinkled up her nose in disgust before spewing it into his eyes. Sass immediately fell back, gripping at his face, trying to rub the poison off.
"Are you trying to kill me?!" Sass shrieked.
"We both know you're not going to die, even with the most deadly of poisons," Pollen said, strutting over to the Miracle Box. "But the symptoms will still affect you," Pollen said calmly, "You're about to feel really dizzy, and it'll be very hard to see properly. You'll also have a horrible headache, my apologies. Oh, and if you see or hear something weird, that's just the hallucinations kicking in." She gently opened up the box and grabbed the dainty hair comb with an emblem of a bee on it. "Though of course, you already know all this if you've created that many time loops as you say."
"Well, you haven't hit me with belladonna in any of those. Last time it was arsenic, and I have no idea how you changed that factor of time," Sass said, his eyes involuntarily emitting tears.
"Alright then, why don't you just use your second chance and start all over, hm?" Pollen smiled, holding her miraculous tenderly in her hand.
"Because I'm tired," Sass said between moans of pain, "and I don't feel like constantly feeling the pain of your toxicants. I'm afraid, now matter how many times I live this moment over, I will not be able to sway your mind. You're bent on running away, I can't stop you from that."
"Tikki is my best friend," Pollen said, "and she's beginning to need some more help."
"I understand," Sass said, collapsing to his knees from the dizziness. "Just... don't lose your miraculous... please... be careful..." he said this right before he passed out.
"Don't worry Sass, I will be," Pollen said, her smile melting into a frown. She gently rolled him over so that he lay on his back, picking up his hand tenderly and giving it a little squeeze, "and I know I'll see you out there eventually too. I'm looking forward to it."
With that, she left him laying in the center of the reading room and flew off, phasing through the walls as she needed, vanishing into the polluted skies of Paris.
Pollen didn't find anyone worthy of her miraculous for a long while after that. That had all taken place just a few days before Pharaoh would appear. And days of hunting led her nowhere. Pollen was a very picky person and wouldn't just hand out her jewel to anyone she felt the slightest connection to. In addition to that issue, she found it very tough to find someone perfect for it. Those who were compatible with her miraculous had always often been stuck up and snobbish, leading them to make selfish decisions for the good of themselves. And yeah, that was practically Pollen's behavior a majority of the time. She was selfish, rude, obsessed with herself and, well, snobbish. She was aware these were her flaws, but she didn't care at all to even consider changing the way she was. It was her nature, and she new she was the personification of all things perfect.
But her wielder couldn't be like that. Confidence was a good thing to have as a hero, but with the bee themed heroes, it often meant being borderline narcissistic.
It didn't help that whenever Pollen felt a connection to someone, they ended up being a celebrity. At one point, she considered giving it to the fashion designer, Gabriel Agreste. He was fabulous and divine, confident in his nature. But she had a weird feeling about it, and decided not to on account of him likely never having the time away from his job to ever be a superhero.
And then there was Bob Roth, who Pollen also randomly felt a connection to. And that celebrity man–working in production of music and film–was the exact embodiment of what she feared her heart would be drawn to. The man scammed people for money, and only considered how decisions would affect him, rather than other people. An absolute narcissist. Hell, she even almost picked that monstrous man's son, who went by the stage name, XY.
Pollen's luck was low.
Of course, right when she thought things couldn't get any worse, she lost her miraculous.
Yep.
She lost it.
Gone.
How? You might ask? Easy. She didn't have a clue.
She had it while lurking around the billionaires row, reconsidering giving the miraculous to Gabriel Agreste. And after some deep thought, and maybe a little bit of spying, she decided against it once again. It was that weird feeling she got from it that set her off. But also, she knew his son was Chat Noir and that... would lead to some unwelcoming situations in the future should one find out the other's identity, so it was best to just avoid that all together.
She didn't realize she had lost it until she'd ventured out to the bakery where Tikki lived. She was going to just reveal herself to her kwami friend and maybe they could work out a plan together. Besides, she was dying to see her again. And then... just as she was ready to come through the wall–disobeying all laws of physics–she came to the horrific realization that the comb of the bee was gone. She couldn't let Tikki ever know about that, for the woman would never forget that mistake and would likely use it to ridicule and find disappointment in her always. So Pollen retraced her steps, praying she'd just dropped it from the sky somewhere near the bakery.
A sickening feeling made her gut sink.
The miraculous... was likely right in front of the Agreste mansion.
In panic, Pollen flew faster than light itself to get to the mansion. Just as she got there, someone had just pulled up in a limousine. Anxiety increased, and Polled was now chewing on her nails, observing from above as a blond haired girl stepped out of the limo, shouted at the driver with some complaint, and strut up to the front door where the miraculous of the bee, of course, was sitting next to a vine of plants.
Pollen hoped she wouldn't see it, but sparkly things always catch the eyes of rich girls.
The blonde girl, chewing pink bubble gum which she'd been blowing into bubbles and popping in her mouth, picked up the shiny hair piece and admired it. Pollen felt the world coming to an end. Before anything could be done about it, the front door was opened and the girl disappeared inside.
Chloe Bourgeois now had the miraculous of the bee.
Anxiously, Pollen flew through the walls of the mansion until she was able to relocate the girl. Of course. She was in Chat Noir's... Adrien Agreste's bedroom. Chloe had not yet put the hair piece in, so there was still hope for Pollen to steal it back before a connection was made. Remaining undetected in the room, Pollen phased through the door of a huge closet and observed Adrien and Chloe through a crack in the door.
"Fancy meeting you here."
Pollen's blood ran cold, and a little squeak escaped her lips as she spun around to find Plagg in his full form at the opposite end of the closet. Pollen's face was glued in a mixture of fright, shock, and anger. Her eyes were wide but her frown was contorted with her nostrils flared.
"Ah, sorry for scaring you," Plagg apologized, "but what's with the face?"
"Why are you full size?!" Pollen whispered.
"Not even a "hello! It's been so long!" or "Plagg, I've missed you!" from ya?" Plagg said quietly.
"Plagg," Pollen's eyes burned into his with sternness.
"Adrien's refusing to put on the ring. Little bugger. Why are you here? I didn't think the sanctuary would let you out, seeing as you're the last kwami from the secondary ring."
"I ran off," Pollen answered. She never really liked Plagg. She considered him mostly annoying. "That blonde girl stole the miraculous."
"She stole it?" Plagg said in surprise.
"Well, not really. But she picked it up off the ground-"
"So you lost it?"
"Whatever. Now why is Adrien not putting on the ring?"
"Is now the time to talk about this?" Plagg said nervously.
"Plagg, I swear to-"
"Ok, ok! It's that... the curse is affecting him weirdly..." Plagg admitted.
"How so?"
"The ring shrunk on his finger. We almost couldn't get it off, and now he's afraid that if he puts it on again, it'll stay there, permanently. Getting smaller... and smaller... until his finger falls off."
"Well, problem solve, Plagg. Either find someone new for the job, or get him to put it on again. We need a Chat Noir out there," Pollen said harshly.
"Jee, I missed ya too," Plagg grumbled.
"Do you know this blonde girl?" Pollen asked, returning to the crack in the door.
"That's Adrien's childhood friend, Chloe Bourgeois," Plagg answered.
"I'm assuming she's some rich celebrity."
"She's the daughter of the mayor so... yeah."
"Always the rich people with me, why is that?"
"Do you feel a connection to her?" Plagg asked.
"Yeah, but that's no good when it comes to me and you know it. Every time I go with the tug of that feeling I end up creating some money-power hungry narcissist. Remember that one girl who called herself the Golden Empress? I get the same feeling with this Chloe girl that I had with her."
"Eh, you gotta admit, Golden Empress was pretty badass."
"That was in the 1700s, Plagg. Times have changed, and if I recreate her, it might do more harm than good. I need to get this miraculous away from that kid before she puts it on." Pollen said.
"Um, Pollen-"
"And you CAN'T tell Tikki about this!" Pollen scorned.
"Pollen-"
"Plagg!"
"Pollen!"
"What?!"
"I think she's putting it on!"
"What?!!" Pollen flipped back to the door and peered out to Adrien and Chloe. Chloe had her hair down and was using her phone as a mirror to place the comb in her hair with puckered lips. "No-" Pollen shrunk down to her little travel size and was immediately about to be pulled to Chloe when thankfully, Plagg reacted fast enough to grab her in his hand. When wearing the miraculous for the first time, the kwami of that miraculous was always going to be forcefully pulled in their direction when at a certain distance apart. Plagg, gripping on the shelves of the closet to keep himself in place, was desperately holding Pollen back as she was practically being magnetized to Chloe.
"Oh no-" Pollen squeaked. The magnetic force was so strong it ripped Plagg away from the shelves and caused the both of them to crash onto the floor. The shelf came down with him and several clothes and boxes came to the ground with a hard thud.
"What was that?!" they heard Chloe chirp.
"Uhhhhhhhhhhh- the dresser must have... fallen... or something... I'll deal with it later," Adrien said, covering for Plagg.
As if the ruckus wasn't enough, Plagg and Pollen were now dragged into the wall, making way too much noise.
"It sounds like someone is in there!" Chloe said with fright.
"Uh- huh- it's probably nothing! The high security here and all that- yeah!"
"Adrien, that doesn't sound natural at all!" Chloe exclaimed.
Pulling Pollen back, Plagg grabbed onto one of the many dressers (Adrien had a lot of clothes), only for it to topple over onto him, emptying many of its contents. Plagg and Pollen both had to refrain from yelping, biting their tongues to keep quiet.
"I don't like that!" Chloe shrieked. "What's happening?!"
"Earthquake maybe?" Adrien said.
"Paris doesn't get earthquakes!"
"Oh no-" Pollen squeaked, feeling Plagg begin to lose his grip on her.
"Wait-" he tried holding onto her harder but it was too late; she shot from his hand like a wet bar of soap, fazed through the wall, rocketed across Adrien's entire room, and hit Adrien square in the temple, causing him to topple over.
"Holy shit! Adrien!" Chloe shrieked.
"Ow! What the-" Adrien sat up, immediately spotting Pollen who was rubbing her sore head, propped up on his chest. "Um-" he clearly recognized what she was.
"OH MY GOD IS THAT A BUG!? EW!" Chloe slammed Adrien's laptop down on his chest, crushing Pollen beneath it.
"Ow- CHLOE!" Adrien yelped.
"IT'S MOVING! EW EW EW!" Chloe slapped him with his laptop again before resorting to kicking Pollen with her high heel. Adrien was caught in the crossfire and ended up doubling over in pain. "Oh my god! Adrien! I'm so sorry!" Chloe stooped down to make sure he was alright, before seeing Pollen–who was still alive–and screaming: "IT HAS A FACE!!!!"
"Chloe calm down!" Adrien said, picking up Pollen in his hands so that Chloe would not cause any more harm. Seeing this, Chloe screamed again and flew behind the couch to hide.
"Throw it out the window! Ew!!!" Chloe said, unseen.
"Uh..." Adrien gave Pollen a look. He couldn't do any of the explaining here. He knew Pollen was a kwami, he just didn't know who she was or why she was here. And Pollen knew he was Chat Noir, clearly, but neither could say a single thing other than give each other a knowing–but strange–look.
"Ahem-" Pollen cleared her throat, flying out of Adrien's hand and over to the couch cautiously. "If I may introduce myself-" white foam came spewing from behind the couch, knocking Pollen out of the air. Up came Chloe with a fire extinguisher in her hand, its nozzle aimed right at Pollen who was a nasty, foamy, beat up mess on the couch cushions.
"Where did you get a fire extinguisher?!" Adrien exclaimed in utter surprise.
"Why is there a tiny misshapen human in your room?!" Chloe retaliated.
"I don't know!" Adrien said.
"Exactly! Nothing makes sense right now!" Chloe kept her aim on Pollen. "Now what the HELL is THAT?!"
"I'm a bee..." Pollen spit out some of the white foam.
"WAAAAAAA!!!!! IT TALKS!"
"Oh lord..." Pollen rolled her eyes, peeling herself away from the couch. Chloe immediately used the fire extinguisher again, but this time, Pollen flew out of its path faster than you could even blink. Chloe screamed some more, still trying to murder Pollen as Pollen evaded all her attacks with ease. "Please calm down."
"WHY DOES IT TALK!?"
"Hey, you said it was a misshapen human, did you expect it to bark or something?" Adrien chuckled, amused by the whole sight in front of him. Somehow, Chloe was now standing up on Adrien's foosball table.
"Ok just- gimme that!" Pollen zipped up to Chloe's head and pulled the comb out of her hair, turning into her full sized form and returning to float in front of Chloe, eye to eye. Chloe had a chair held over her head defensively, now white as a ghost and about to fall off the foosball table.
"Holy shit!" Chloe looked like she'd just seen the devil himself. "What are you?!"
"Chloe Bourgeois, I am Pollen, the bee kwami of subjection, and I am here to make you a superhero."
