Despair
Marinette studied the board she'd just made. It was a map of Paris which she had bought ages ago at a second hand store, thinking it looked cool and vintage and then never putting it up in her room. She put little red dots on each place around an area she remembered akuma victims becoming akumatized. Next to each, she had a sticky note with the name of the villain and their identity; Ivan Bruel as Stoneheart, Aurore Bureal as Stormy Weather, Nathaniel Kutzburg as the Evillustrator, Rose Lavillant as Princess Fragrance, and Alya Cesaire as Lady Wifi.
All but Aurore happened to be her classmates, only raising her suspicion that Hawkmoth had something to do with the school. All but Rose and Aurore had been akumatized within the school building. It was certainly noteworthy.
Alya had gone through a handful of surgeries to repair her leg. The incident had severed her bone, though she had absolutely no memory of the event. She now wore a cast on her leg, but because of how fragile the bone was now, Alya had been coming to school in a wheelchair.
It was surprising to Marinette that she'd never noticed how unfriendly her school was to people in wheelchairs. There were stairs, but no ramps. Alya needed special assistance to get to nearly all of her classes up and down the stairs. Because of the way some of the classrooms were built, Alya had to sit in the front row, swapping with Adrien in a few of their classes.
Marinette was there for her. Because of the injury, many people quickly found out Alya had become Lady Wifi which caused some resentment between her and Chloe. In fact, a lot of people took their anger out on Alya, now knowing who she'd become. She'd received hate notes in her locker, nasty glares and people had spread awful rumors about her as well.
"I think I want to spread positivity for the akumatized victims, using my channel," Alya said. They were in Ms. Mendeleev's class, meaning Alya could sit next to Marinette without a problem.
"Yeah?"
"I mean... I don't remember anything from Lady Wifi. I just remember this... horrible feeling coming over me before it happened and then... nothing. Next thing I know I wake up and Chat Noir is carrying me to a hospital," Alya said. "None of the victims–and they are victims mind you–know what's happened. We have no memory of it, so who's to say we had any control over our actions while we were akumatized?"
"Right," Marinette agreed, thinking of Rose. Rose, sweet little Rose. She'd never hurt that many people the way she did. It was easy for Marinette to separate Princess Fragrance from Rose, just as she could with all the other victims. They were different people, their bodies simply becoming a vessel.
"I just don't think they deserve any hate. It's... a complicated situation though, isn't it? Especially since whoever Princess Fragrance was..."
"Yeah, yeah," Marinette nodded, hoping Alya wouldn't connect the dots on Princess Fragrance's identity and change her mind.
"Would you like to share your important conversation with the class Miss Dupan-Cheng and Miss Cesaire?" Ms. Mendeleev snapped.
"N-no ma'am!" Alya said with a meek smile.
"That's what I thought," Ms. Mendeleev said, turning her back on them to continue writing on what the projector had up on the board. Marinette noticed Chloe glaring cruelly up at Alya, hate filling her eyes. Chloe had been Lady Wifi's first victim, it was no wonder Chloe was mad about it.
Thankfully, there weren't any akuma victims for the next few days. Perhaps Hawkmoth was busy, or maybe he was reassessing a plan. Either way, the break didn't put Marinette at any ease.
At lunch, Marinette sat with Alya. Alya had mastered the art of wheeling around in her wheelchair and was fully capable of getting her food on her own. It made Marinette happy to see she was adapting to overcome, she was getting better. Alya didn't seem hindered by this at all. In fact, she was back to her usual self by the end of the week.
"Can I sit with you guys?" a voice asked after the two girls had begun conversation. It was Adrien.
"Ummm... sure!" Alya put on a smile. She had finally begun to warm up to Adrien, just as Marinette had. It also helped that Marinette now had to sit with him in a few of their classes. After getting to talk to him, she came to the conclusion that he really was a nice guy. People were being judgemental, and she felt guilty that she'd been the exact same when he first showed up.
"Thank you," Adrien said with a sigh of relief. It saddened Marinette to think that he was anxious over asking such a simple question. "Chloe left early again, so I'm sort of alone."
"Don't worry about it!" Alya smiled, "You can sit with us any time!"
"Really?" he asked as if this came as a great surprise.
"Sure! Why not?" Marinette agreed. She glanced up and noticed Nino standing across the cafeteria, his trey in his hands. He wore a face that Marinette couldn't read, but she could tell that something had upset him. That something being Adrien.
"Mind if I sit here too?" Nino asked as he approached them, his voice sounding bitter and irritated.
"Not at all!" Alya said, though it was evident she sensed the same aura about Nino that Marinette had.
"Great," Nino grumbled and plopped his trey on the table, sitting directly across from Adrien.
"Hey, look," Alya whispered to Marinette, showing her something on her phone. It was a picture of Chat Noir someone had taken and posted to instagram.
"Cool, cool," Marinette said.
"Apparently he's been wandering around at night. Do you think they patrol for akumas?" Alya asked.
"Um.."
"Alya," Nino addressed, then saying something to her in spanish which Marinette wouldn't understand. The two began talking, pulling Alya away from Marinette. Awkwardly, Marinette glanced up at Adrien, and the two made eye contact.
"So...." Adrien whistled.
"Sup."
"Chat Noir, huh?"
"The photo? Oh, yeah. Him."
"Do you think he's cool?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"Nice, nice."
Awkward silence.
"Oh, I uh... I brought some buns from my family's bakery, do you guys want some?" Marinette asked, pulling out a bag which contained the precious fluffy bread from her mom and dad.
"Don't mind if I do!" Alya grinned as Marinette handed her a roll.
"Ah, yes please!" Nino said eagerly and Marinette gave him one as well.
"Adrien?" She offered him a roll but he shook his head dismissively. "Why not?"
"Dietary restrictions."
"Pfft, are you lactose intolerant?" Nino snickered.
"N-no, I'm not," Adrien stammered, "I just... modeling and... stuff..."
"Ah. That must be why there's hardly any food on your plate then?"
"Oh," Adrien looked down at his practically empty trey, "Y-yeah. I guess."
"Man, that's rough. Why'd you want to be a model anyways?" Nino scoffed. He was trying to annoy Adrien, get under his skin and piss him off.
"I didn't," Adrien said, completely not understanding Nino's intention. "My dad sorta just put me into it when I was young and yeah. I just have always wanted to be what my parents wanted me to be."
"You don't have anything you'd rather do?" Marinette asked. Adrien shook his head.
"So is modeling fun?" Alya asked.
"No, not really."
"Do you even have hobbies man?" Nino asked.
"Um... Piano.... Well, it's not really a hobby. I don't remember ever wanting to play, but I guess it's fun sometimes." Adrien mumbled.
"You sure you don't want the roll?" Marinette asked, wavering the roll in front of him.
"Yeah, I'll pass."
"You know, her family bakery makes some good pastries," Alya said, trying to persuade him.
"No thanks."
"Your loss," Alya shrugged.
Once they'd finished eating their lunch, they went off to their anatomy class. Then their pre-calculus class after that. And before they knew it, the end of the day had rolled around finally.
Adrien was just about to head off to his fencing class when Le Chien Kim stepped in front of him, stopping him in his tracks. The jock looked upset.
"Um... hello?" Adrien said meekly.
"Adrien, yeah. Hi," Kim said awkwardly. "Can I talk to you?"
"Um... sure? What is it?"
"It's Chloe," Kim said with a sigh, "she broke up with me... again... over a misunderstanding and- well, could you talk to her? She won't answer her phone."
"... you two were together?" Adrien rose a brow.
"Yeah, you didn't know?"
"No, I didn't."
"She didn't tell you?" Kim now looked even more distressed, "you're her best friend, and she didn't tell you?!"
"Um... yeah... I guess not..." Adrien said, his words now sinking in.
"Well, we keep breaking up and getting back together again for like... three years now!" Kim complained, "and yesterday, Alix and I were goofing off after PE and Chloe saw us and I guess she read the situation wrong because now she thinks I've been cheating on her with Alix! But Alix is one of my best friends! Can you PLEASE talk to her?!"
"I'll try, but... I'm busy today." Adrien said, "My fencing class is going to start in twenty minutes, I need to get changed."
He tried to step past Kim but Kim stopped him yet again. "Chloe really means a lot to me and I'm worried I've greatly upset her. I may have broken her heart!"
"What exactly were you and Alix doing?" Adrien asked hesitantly.
"Well you know that thing where you pretend to kiss with your thumbs?"
"... elaborate?"
"You put your thumbs together and press them on the other person's lips and kiss your thumbs. It's funny."
"... How?"
"Ugh, like this," Kim put his thumbs on Adrien's lips, pulling his face in and kissing the back of his thumbs. It was too quick to give Adrien the chance to react. "Anyways-"
"Hold on, what?!"
"What do you mean 'what'?"
"What the heck was that?!" Adrien's cheeks flushed red in embarrassment.
"Did ya like it?" Kim said with a teasing smirk.
"Well no wonder Chloe is mad!" Adrien's face was as red as Nathaniel's hair by now.
"Please! Help!"
"Ok, I'll talk to her but I have a fencing class to get to first," Adrien said, finally escaping Kim to head to the changing rooms.
Once he'd gotten into his practice uniform, Adrien grabbed his water bottle and headed out for the gym where several dueling mats were laid across the floor. He went and sat with the other guys. The whole fencing team was made up of guys with one girl, though it was coed and they were supposed to have a balance.
Armand D'Argencourt was the main coach of the team. He was the epitome of a stereotypical French man. The man's mustache was thinner than a pencil, curling perfectly at the ends, waxed with much too much mousse to be safe. Though they were all French, D'Argencourt's accent was so thick it could be differentiated between him and the other Parisians-like a New Yorker to a Californian. He was one of the most skilled men in fencing that Adrien had ever met, he could easily outmatch other coaches in their conference within just a few seconds. This man was insane.
Coach Armand was a little later than usual today, which was odd because he was always on time. He was the school's PE teacher, how could he be late when they practiced within the same building? When he did arrive, he brought someone with him. They had their face shield held in their hands so that their face could be seen, and it was someone Adrien had never met before.
"Students, this is Kagami Tsuguri, they'll be joining us for the season," Armand introduced.
Kagami didn't look too pleased. They had silky ravenette hair, hazel eyes, and freckled cheeks. They were Asian, and if Adrien had to guess, they were probably Japanese.
"Let's start on our warmups now, we're already five minutes behind our practice schedule!" Armand barked.
Kagami lined up with the rest of the team as they started doing stretches and warmups. They never said a word to anyone, no one even acknowledged their presence. Adrien felt bad about this. Perhaps they were lonely. But judging by the look on their face, they didn't want anyone to speak to them anyways.
When coach Armand split them off into dueling groups, Adrien found he was conveniently not paired with Kagami, and that they had to duel the only girl in the division. Adrien was against his usual opponent, as they were typically separated into pairs that matched each other's skill level.
Kagami absolutely floored the girl in fencing. Adrien could hardly see, as his mask prohibited a lot of vision from side to side, but he noticed that Kagami's opponent was already on the ground without a moment to lose.
So Armand paired them with one of the boys, to which Kagami put to shame for skill. Armand went into some deep thought, then took them to another opponent which Adrien knew to be one of the more skilled fencers on the team. It was evident that Armand was assessing Kagami's placement on the team.
Adrien got jabbed in the lower gut, pulling him from his thoughts.
"I keep beating you, you are hardly fighting back," his opponent said.
"Oh, yeah, sorry."
"Distracted by that Kagami girl?"
"I'm not quite sure that they're a girl," Adrien remarked.
"Eh," his opponent shrugged and the two got back in their fighting positions.
***
"Chloe," Adrien sighed as the girl tore apart a series of paper notes and threw them on the floor of her bedroom in disgust. It had been a few days since her breakup with Kim and things weren't going well.
"He's selfish, he's stupid, he's blatently rude," Chloe began listing things off on her fingers, "he's childish, he thinks he's a king, he can't even keep a relationship, he's a cheating fucking bastard, he's-"
"Slow down Chloe, you're gonna choke on your own words," Adrien said.
"You have no idea what it's been like! Absolute hell! And he lied to you! I can't believe that fucking- that stupid-"
"Maybe we've both misunderstood Kim? And maybe he is telling the truth?"
"Yeah, well he only wants me for my money. 'Ohhhh Chloe I neeeeed you', he only likes me for who my dad is. This is such bullshit!" She tore apart another note from Kim. Since she'd blocked his number and all his socials, the only way he could try and communicate with her was by slipping her little notes and messages on paper. "And Alix of all people! I thought she was gay or some shit!"
"Eh, who knows. They are really good friends though," Adrien stated, "Er- from what I've seen.... In the few weeks I've known them..."
"He's even gone after Sabrina to try and persuade me to come back! And this has happened one too many times! I'm so done with it!"
"Well to be fair Chloe, you never even told me about Kim. And you two have been dating for years!"
"On and off but whatever." Chloe rolled her eyes. "Boys are stupid!" She grit her teeth and stomped on all the torn apart notes that now littered the floor.
"Oi!"
"Well, not you of course," Chloe said.
"Sounds like a toxic relationship."
"It IS a toxic relationship!" Chloe grumbled, "And I swear, he only saw me as free cash."
"Well, you are very pretty Chloe. And you're secretly a softie. I'm sure he saw you as more than that."
"He didn't. Trust me Adrien." Chloe crossed her arms. "Ugh! You know what? I want boba! Let's go!" She grabbed Adrien by the arm and pulled him off the couch he sat upon.
"Can't you just order it to your room?"
"I need to cool off." Chloe grumpily tugged Adrien out the room and into the hall. "Besides, it's nice out, and it's too hot in my room."
"Well alright then..."
The next thing Adrien knew, they were headed for a very specific boba shop because, according to Chloe, it was the only one worth her rich girl money. It happened to be near the love lock bridge which had unfortunately been torn apart and rebuilt so that people could no longer place locks on it. Something about the locks being too heavy for the bridge provoked the city to do that, which was rather saddening to many. Still, there remained a few locks on the bridge which people had managed to attach to lamp posts.
"So when I was in 1ère, we had this whole dance thing in the winter that I told you about. Well actually, I invited you to come but then your dad said no and it became this whole fussy thing and yeah." *1ère=11th/Junior year in US*
"I remember," Adrien nodded.
"Yeah, well, at the time, Kim and I were taking a break and he decided to try and like- I dunno- get back with me or something? And I went to the dance with Sabrina but she got sick from all the sugar in the punch and left me there, alone. And ugh, it was absolutely miserable."
"You called me five times."
"Yeah," Chloe said, "well, Kim finally came up to me and rather forced me to dance with him. Well, he asked and everyone was staring at me and they didn't know we were taking a break so I said yes to keep it a secret. And THEN he recited this whole apology thing about god knows what, rambling on and on about how incometant he is and what not. And I was like, yeah, you are. Anyways, we got back together after that and we lasted all the way up until now because apparently that apology didn't mean shit and he's actually really good friends with benefits to Alix!"
They reached the boba shop and Chloe was still going on and on about how angry she was with Kim, hardly letting Adrien get a word in. And maybe she was right. Maybe Le Chien Kim wasn't all he was cracked up to be.
"You know, I should have seen the signs," Chloe said as they left the shop, boba in hand. "I mean, one time we went to this Valentine's day party, and for one thing, he didn't even get me anything! And for another, we were getting really flirty with each other and I tried asking him if he wanted to do... well, you know, and guess what! He said no!"
"You gave him a choice and... wait- you wanted to WHAT?"
"Sex, Adrien. It's normal at our age. Especially when you've been dating for THREE YEARS!"
"On and off," Adrien reminded her, taking a sip of the boba which he already knew he didn't like. The fear of choking on a piece of boba when he sipped on the straw was very intense.
"Whatever," Chloe angrily sipped on her boba with none of the fear Adrien had of the drink.
"Well, you asked for consent and he said no so...... what's the problem?"
"The problem is, he'd been leading me on all night only to say NO!"
"Alright, whatever you say," Adrien said as they stepped back onto the love lock bridge. No, they didn't walk all the way from the hotel to the boba shop. They had a driver, but Chloe insisted they walk for a little bit so the car was parked just a few blocks away from the other side of the bridge.
"Anyways, what about you? How's it going having to handle sitting with both Nino AND Marinette now?"
"It's been... fine. Nino is... well, he's fine."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying!"
"It's alright Adrien. Nino doesn't need to be your best friend just because you sit with him. There's like, so many guys at our school who'd be more fitting."
"I'll.... Try..."
"Chloe!" someone who was most definitely Kim shouted from behind them on the bridge. Chloe snapped her head around so fast that Adrien worried she'd somehow hurt herself. Her face was either contorted in pain from her neck snap or in utter anger. She had fire burning in her eyes as Kim ran up to them and dropped to his knees.
"What, you stalk me now?!" Chloe grit her teeth.
"Chloe, you're the most amazing girl I know!" Kim said, looking at the wooden bridge, "I-I've known you for so long and... I can't live without you! No one's ever looked at me like you do. Everyone just sees me as some jock guy who's good at like- a lot of sports- but you... you look at me and I feel like someone genuinely cares. Someone sees me as who I am underneath the surface. I may be goofy and stupid, but so are you! Wait- no- not stupid- but, you can be goofy! And your laugh is beautiful when you're just being yourself. And I'm sorry about what happened, it really was a misunderstanding because I'd never do something like that to you! I could never hurt you Chloe! I love you!"
"Oh stuff it in a bag Kim!" Chloe balled her hands into fists, "You're a liar, you can't even keep your facts straight! I told you to leave me alone, and now you're following me around! You disgust me!"
"Chloe-" Kim looked broken, his eyes wide and now brimming with tears. Chloe must have meant more to him than he let on.
"You can't take anything seriously, just like you couldn't take our relationship seriously. Is everything a joke to you?!"
"Um-" Adrien must have been invisible.
"Of course not!" Kim pleaded, looking her in the eyes with utmost sincerity.
"You used me," Chloe said, tears forming in her eyes, "I can't trust you anymore! You fucking- lying piece of shit! You think I'm a prize?! You think I'm some trophy girlfriend?! IT'S OVER KIM!"
"Chloe please-"
"Don't even try to leave me any more notes because I'll burn them all!" Chloe said, "I'll tear them apart just like you did to my heart!" She grabbed Adrien by the wrist, "We're leaving, Adrien."
"I.... I will never love again," Kim said, sinking into his own endless pit of despair.
A/N Kagami is non binary in this version of Miraculous I've made. I apologize if that makes you uncomfortable but I feel like it adds to their character, especially having a mom obsessed with perfection.
If you have any other questions about the things I've changed in the rewrite, whether it be lgbt stuff or making Alya now have a temporary disability, you can ask them here.
This is not a judgmental place and I will not tolerate users attacking people for asking questions, even if those questions come off as rude. There is nothing wrong with asking, depending on the context. (Ex: don't ask why I made Nathaniel gay if you just want to be homophobic about it)
I want to be welcoming to the users of wattpad here, your comment will be deleted if it is aimed to harm another user.
