A Fraction of Time
Alix Kubel was very easily irritated. Kim often joked that it was a miracle she hadn't been akumatized yet with how often she got annoyed, pissed off, or lost her temper for all the most ridiculous things. Her rocky relationship with her family definitely didn't help with that. She often blew up at them, becoming a little monster screaming and shouting, sometimes even throwing things.
The incident of Pharaoh made things weird. She was angry with Julil for getting akumatized. The thousands of deaths he caused was a number constantly growing for the next week and on as the police kept finding more "missing persons" and bodies that had been so horribly destroyed they were barely recognizable. And for what? Because Julil got mad about not being taken seriously about his Egyptian mythology beliefs? Were the reasons behind all the akumatizations really that stupid? Alix couldn't help but hate her brother for it. She hated that he couldn't remember any of it. For some reason, a part of her wished he knew exactly what was going through his head as he chose to murder thousands. But Ladybug and Chat Noir had said that this was Hawkmoth's doing, and she must learn to forgive Julil.
Her father took notice of how moody Alix had been and decided it was best to take her away from the house for a while on a night out. Alix wanted to hang out with Kim, or at least, she'd rather do that than go out for dinner with her dad. Running an exhibition made her father pretty wealthy, and though Alix didn't quite look it herself, she was fairly well off because of him. And so, surprise surprise, this was no casual dining. They were going somewhere where her father could waste his money on overpriced food.
He didn't know Alix already made plans to ditch.
"Dad, did you really have to make me do this?" Alix grumbled as a waiter sat them down at a very nice table with a white table-cloth. She swore she could feel eyes on her, as if the people here knew her brother was now a mass murderer. She hated Julil for bringing her into that.
"Well, tonights a special night," her father said brightly. He looked down at her as she took her jacket off and frowned. "Couldn't you have made an effort to look presentable?"
"What's wrong with how I look?" Alix said, crossing her arms in irritation. Her father furrowed his eyebrows.
"Well... the piercings and choker aren't exactly appropriate for where we're at. This is a very renowned restaurant, you know. Not just everyone gets to dine here. And well, Alix, your pants look like they came from a thrift store."
"That's because they are from a thrift store. As is my shirt. Does it really bother you so much that I'm wearing what I like!"
"I'm just saying I wished you would have dressed a little more nicely."
"Whatever," ALix grumbled. Her phone buzzed with a notification so she pulled it out to check it, her dad groaning at the action. It was a text from Kim.
Kock Head: You think you can break away yet?
Alix: no we just got here
Kock Head: Just let me know when
Alix: yes please save me from this
"Who's that you're talking to over your own father?" Alix's dad asked, a frown scarring his face deeper than before.
"Kim," Alix said sourly.
"Of course," her father sighed. A waiter popped over to their table with a fake smile plastered to his face.
"Can I get you two anything to drink?" the waiter said brightly. His voice was familiar.
"Just water will be fine," Alix's father said.
"And you?" He looked at Alix. Alix lazily glanced up with him. She immediately felt her brain combust. That was Kim. Le Chien Kim was pretending to be a waiter.
"Kim!' Alix said with a slight growl in her voice. She smacked the notepad out of his hands.
"Ey! You just assaulted a waiter!" Kim exclaimed.
"What are you doing!?" Alix hissed.
"Taking your order," Kim said foolishly.
"You don't work here."
"... You're right, you got me. I don't work here."
"Shocking."
"Son, your prank here isn't very amusing," Alix father retorted.
"Aw, sorry sir. I just wanted to say hi to Alix."
"You were just texting her."
"Yep!"
"Get out of here," Alix groaned.
"Fine! Fine!" Kim said defensively. He winked at her. "I'll leave."
"Actually leave."
"I am! I'm leaving right now!"
"Uh huh."
Kim quickly left like his ass was on fire and a real waiter came and took their order for drinks. Both got water. Alix didn't intend to stick around much longer.
"Do you like that boy?" he father asked.
"He's my friend."
"You can have a crush on your friends. It's alright if you do."
"I don't," Alix said bitterly.
"You hang out with him all the time. And wasn't his break up with that Chloe girl because of you?"
"I'm aromantic, dad. I've told you that already."
"I don't think you should be engaging with those labels, personality. You're too beautiful of a girl for that. And what does it even mean? You don't like sex?"
"I don't have romantic attraction to people, dad," Alix grumbled.
"Oh, so you're heartless and incapable of love? Alix I d-"
"No, father. I still can love people. But it means that I-"
"I don't care what it means. It's a label. You don't deserve to be labeled."
"Whatever. I don't like Kim like that. He's just my friend."
"You talk about him an awful lot."
"He's a friend. I talk about Max a lot too."
"Not that I'm aware of."
"Max is practically at our house every week!" Alix exclaimed.
"He is?"
"Yes!"
"Well, Alix, you are a beautiful young lady. I wouldn't mind you having a boyfriend. Any boy would be lucky to have you," her father said, trying to look soft and pleasant. Alix only got more agitated.
"I don't want to talk about this."
"Fine, Alix. Keep shutting me out. One of these days you're going to have to open up to me though, and you'll regret never wanting to spend time with your old man," he said sharply.
"Oh yeah?! I've been nothing but open and honest with you!"
"Alix, settle down. This is not the place for one of your temper-tantrums."
"You-"
"Alix!" he warned. She gave up, still keeping her arms crossed.
"How about I turn this night around?" her dad said, now digging for something in his bag. "There's something I'd like for you to have. It's very important to our family and history, you know." He pulled out a silver stop-watch looking item and set it on the table. It looked old. Alix wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"Really?"
"You're turning eighteen soon. I've been holding onto it for a while now just to give it to you at the right time."
"And this feels like the right time to give me a... hand-watch?" Alix said sourly.
"Well... it's not just a hand-watch."
"Yeah. I can see it's a stopwatch as well. You've truly blessed me," Alix said sarcastically. She held up her wrist which had an apple watch on. "I've already got a watch, so I don't know why I would want or need that."
"It's what's below the surface, Alix."
Alix grabbed the watch and inspected it, as angry as ever, "Uh huh. It looks soooo interesting I might actually want to keep it."
"Really?"
"That was sarcasm, dad. Why not just give it to Julil? You like him better anyways."
"That's not true, Alix," her father said. "That was a gift from me and your mother before she..."
"Yeah? Before she what, dad?" Alix narrowed her brows even more. "Before she went off and became a slut?!"
"Not so loud, Alix!"
"That's what you were thinking, right?!" Alix stood up from the table, silver watch in hand. "I think I'm going to go now. This night is a mess already."
"Alix-"
"Kim can drive me home. Bye."
She quickly stormed off before her dad could get another word in. She took out her phone and gave Kim a text, now outside the restaurant. She still had the watch in her hand. While she waited at the curb, she decided to try and open it. It was jammed. She pried at it a little harder but the thing wouldn't budge. It was practically glued shut.
In frustration, Alix angrily threw the watch at the ground where it bounced off into the street and immediately popped open. When it opened, he could faintly see an image of her mother and someone inside, folded in paper but now laying out on the rainy road to get run over. The watch, as it opened, began to make sound, and she quickly realized it was a recorded message.
"Hey Alix!" the voice from the watch said. It was definitely her mom. She hadn't heard her mom's voice in years, but still, she recognized it. "Congratulations on turning eighteen! I know you're probably not happy with me, and I don't blame me for that. But I want you to know how much I have always loved you. And I will never stop loving you, no matter what. I will never-"
The voice was silenced as a car drove right over the watch, breaking it into a thousand little pieces and springs. Alix screamed without meaning to, rushing out into the middle of the road, in front of cars to desperately try and pick the pieces together, or at least to find the watch's voice-box. Another car approached, stopping as it nearly got to her and wailing on its horn. Alix began to sob, scooping up the sharps of metal and all the inner workings of the watch. She found the voicebox. It was crushed.
"Alix!" she heard someone yell–Kim. Kim quickly ran out into the road, pulling her onto her feet and out of the way of cars against her will, no matter how much she thrashed and screamed.
"No! No! I need to ge-"
"Alix, calm down! What's going on?!" Kim asked, turning her around to face him firmly. Alix's fingers tightened around the photo which had come from the watch. It was of her mother, Julil, and herself, back when Alix was only ten years old.
"I-I-" Alix looked back to the road, now full of cars from the traffic she'd backed up. The watch was beyond destroyed, completely unsalvageable. She felt her heart shatter with it. "I want to go home."
"Oh- ok..." Kim said, guiding her away from the curb. "I have my scooter and helmet for you..."
"Thanks..." Alix mumbled as Kim took her around the corner to where his bike was parked. Kim opened up the back compartment and took out a helmet for her. Alix slipped it on and spotted her rollerblades in the compartment. "You brought my blades?"
"Yeah, I figured we we're gonna hang out but then it started raining."
"I'll just take these then," Alix said, picking them up.
"You're going to skate all the way home?"
"I'll be fine. I think I need to be alone for now, Kim."
"Oh... Oh, that's ok," Kim said with a fake smile.
"Yeah," Alix said with a gloomy tone. She took off her shoes, nearly dropping them in a puddle as she exchanged them for her skates. When she was secure, she stood up straight and looked to Kim to tell him to leave.
"Want me to take your shoes?" She shook her head. "Ok, be safe then. Don't get sick from the rain either."
"I don't get sick," Alix said, tightening the helmet. "I'm fine. Just go."
"Ok... see you on Monday then," Kim said, starting up his scooter.
"See ya," Alix said, turning the other way and skating off. She was cold. She was being cold hearted to Kim when he didn't deserve it. But her mind was too scrambled to think her actions through.
Alix hated everything.
She hated the rain. She hated the cold. She hated that stupid watch and its stupid message. She hated her mom for leaving. She hated that her mom gave her the watch as if it would make it any better. She hated her dad for doing all of this. She hated him for always condemning her for her clothes and appearance, and the labels she "gave" herself.
She sorta felt like a bee drowning in a public pool.
Because the world in Paris was now completely unreal with its villainous attributes of characters and heroes, this was obviously not going to be a night that ended in Alix's favor. She was going to be akumatized, and she wanted that to happen. How bad would it be to make people afraid of her?
So, precisely as she was thinking this, a black butterfly touched her blades and disappeared, accompanied by the voice of Hawkmoth in her head. And in Alix's place stood a new entity.
Timebreaker.
***
"Guess we get to have a super cool fight in the rain, huh?" Chat Noir said coyly as he appeared next to Ladybug. Ladybug didn't look at all pleased to be there.
"Both Rena Rouge and Carapace aren't here," she said, not exactly responding to him.
"They'll be here!"
"Let's just hope Queen Bee and those two get here soon," Ladybug said.
"Grumpy?"
"I'm not grumpy," Ladybug said, "but we have an akuma to deal with and I'm not very pleased about it. And we're out in the rain."
"Cheer up! We'll get this done quickly! And maybe after, we can hang out?"
"Hang out? We can't do that. We have to keep focused," Ladybug said with a sigh. "I think I should summon my lucky charm."
"Yeah? Why?"
"Gut feeling..." Ladybug said, tossing her yoyo up and summoning her lucky charm with it. Down fell a blanket into her hands.
"Ah yes, a blanket. Now we can cuddle with the akuma," Chat Noir said.
"Very funny."
The two stood on the ledge of a building which belonged to one of the several colleges in paris. Down on the streets they could see Timebreaker, a new menace to civilians. Her pink hair made Ladybug recognize her as her classmate, Alix Kubel. Her body was covered by a mech suit of armor made up of black, green and pink colors. On her forearms and calves was a projection of light, varying in colors. It was almost like a scale, and made Chat Noir, an academic nerd, think of a PH Richter Scale. A new color was added every time she tagged someone, those tagged people instantly freezing and beginning to fade.
Hopefully the people she was making disappear weren't going to be gone forever.
Chat Noir was about to comment on his observation when Timetagger very suddenly vanished from thin air. The colors that had been on her forearms and calves started out as red near the bottom and became bright blue at the top when she tagged another person.
"She's gone!" Ladybug exclaimed.
"Not quite," someone said, tapping ladybug on the shoulder. Ladybug immediately froze, paused in time. Timetagger, magically, stood behind Ladybug's frozen body, a sinister smirk on her face. And although Chat Noir couldn't see her eyes behind her colored visor, he could tell she was absolutely thrilled with herself.
"What did you just do?! How did you-"
"I needed her energy to take me back in time so that I can change the future. It's better this way, now, all I have to deal with is you," she said, slipping her hand over Ladybug's ear to pull off her earrings. Chat Noir struck her across the head, knocking her away from Ladybug.
"Don't touch her!"
"I already did! That's how you play tag," Timetagger said with a smile, beginning to laugh cruelly. Chat Noir couldn't figure out why until he noticed the earring she held between her fingers. With horror stricken eyes, he looked at Ladybug. Despite being literally paused, her transformation was slowly wearing off to reveal what lay beneath the mask.
"No-"
"You know what's funny?!" Timetagger began to crackle. "Even if you somehow get this back from me, I can always go back in time to get it!" she said, swirling around Ladybug and snatching her other earring. Reacting quickly, Chat Noir picked up the blanket Ladybug summoned with her lucky charm and tossed it over her body, just as the transformation wore off. He couldn't just betray her and discover her identity when she had no control.
"You can go back in time as many times as you want. I'll always be chasing you."
"Chasing, but never catching," Timetagger said, pushing herself forward so fast that Chat Noir hardly had a moment to move out of the way before she touched him on the shoulder, whizzing past him and arching around in a small circle to look at what she'd done, absolutely pleased with herself. Chat Noir had been tagged–he was going to disappear.
"Hey!" called a voice from above. Time Tagger looked up with a scowl on her face to greet Queen Bee, descending from above like an elegant fairy that was about to commit a felony.
"Thanks for getting on my level," Timetagger said with a sneer, speeding forward on her blades with her hand ready to tag Queen Bee's shoulder. Timetagger's energy input level was already at halfway, and soon, she'd be able to go back in time again and have the advantage, especially if she calculated it so that she went to a point where she and her past self as of a few minutes ago were lined together at one point in time. The last thing Queen Bee needed on her first solo mission as a brand new hero was to have to deal with two akumas all by herself.
Queen Bee danced out of the way quickly, spinning on her elevated platform heels. She tossed her spinning top in the air lightly to switch the hand in which she held it in as she swiftly arched her body around to the back of Timetagger to try and prick her with the pointed tip. But she'd miss calculated just how far Timetagger would get from her in such a short time on her blades. The wheels were almost unnaturally fast.
"Long hair isn't going to be in your favor when in close combat, you know," said Timetagger, magically behind Queen Bee now. Queen Bee swore she hadn't even seen the woman move. She was too fast for Queen Bee to keep up with.
"Hey!!" Queen Bee yelped as Timetagger yanked on her long blonde hair, ripping at her scalp. Timetagger laughed through her teeth with a sharp hiss as she jabbed Queen Bee in the back, tagging and freezing her in time. By now, Chat Noir and Ladybug had both already phased out of existence, and Queen Bee would be next.
"Pathetic," Timetagger frowned. She plucked the hair-comb piece out of Queen Bee's hair, relinquishing her transformation and reverting her back to Chloe Bourgeois. Timetagger frowned at this, showing great disappointment as she sucked in a sharp breath. "I guess anyone gets to be a superhero then, huh?"
She stuffed the jewel in one of the compartments of her armor around her thighs where she also had the earrings of the ladybug. She didn't get the chance to get Chat Noir's ring, and he'd already disappeared in time, which Hawkmoth was now barking at her about from within her very mind. She found him to be very annoying already. She checked her charge on her wrists, which was almost full by now. This gave her a sinister smile.
Timetagger skated off the ledge of the building, flipping in the air over the streets and landing powerfully on the street below, not even slipping from all the rainwater. As she zipped forward, tagging a few pedestrians as she went to steal her energy, she began to feel a high on ego and power. It felt good. She'd never been so free in her life.
Water splashed up from her wheels, spinning the droplets into the air over the curbs which she skated past. It made a swishing sound which was rather pleasing to the ears–if one could ignore the screams.
"Hey! You!" Someone which Timetagger had never seen before appeared out of nowhere in the center of the road. It looked as though they'd come directly through a portal–Timetagger was barely able to swerve out of the way without hitting them and knocking herself over. She spun around to look at them, just as their portal disappeared.
They were definitely a miraculous wielder, though of course, Timetagger had never seen them before. It was a man dressed in shades of blue and gray. He wore a hood crowned with two tall fake rabbit ears, and his face was hidden by a mask which covered his mouth and nose. He was wearing what looked to be space-like futuristic armor which glowed a bright blue along its crevasse. His eyes were amber, which contrasted a great deal with his very blue appearance. In fact, it was his eyes, brown skin and dark hair that posed as a reminder that he was a human and not some weird alien or warrior of the future.
"Another newbie?" Timetagger cackled, "I already got rid of the bee girl, just as easily I made Ladybug and Chat Noir disappear forever!"
"I've been doing this longer than you can imagine," the man said, taking a step aside to reveal another figure that Timetagger had somehow missed from earlier. Definitely another miraculous wielder, but based on Hawkmoth's yammerings in her head, it was an unfamiliar one.
This second person was a tall woman–actually, she only gave the illusion of being tall, as her feet were hooked into a pair of what looked to be metallic kangaroo jumping stilts. Now, this girl was no kangaroo. Whatever her miraculous was, it was insect-like. It was evident by the ribbons in her purplish-dyed frizzy hair which acted almost like a set of antennae, and the metallic fake wings on her back. The wings definitely couldn't make her fly, and were clearly there only for aesthetic reasons. She had long boots that covered her thighs which were attached to the stilts she stood upon. She had a very metallic and glowy appearance, just like the bunny guy did. She wore mostly shades of gray which was accented by the very prominent neon green colors around her arms and chest. She wore a face-mask on her beautiful face with dark, umber skin. The mask was similar to the one Queen Bee had, except of course, hers was gray.
"Uh huh," Timetagger smirked. "You gonna try and catch me? Just try!"
Timetagger quickly skated backwards and disappeared from the street entirely with enough momentum to throw herself back in time, using the energy she'd stolen from her victims. She reappeared in the same spot, just thirty or so minutes earlier in time. She skated around the streets, catching the eyes of many pedestrians who immediately recognized her as an akuma and ran in fright. She skid to a halt at the restaurant where she was supposed to be dining with her father at that moment, and caught a glimpse of herself, Alix, at the curb, staring at the stopwatch in the center of the road as it played a message from her mother. Timetagger sucked in a breath, watching from afar as that car came and crushed it, knowing fully well that this was her second chance to stop it. She shook her head, looking away as she saw herself go into absolute panic over it, skating away from the scene before Alix would see her.
The same portal she'd seen before appeared in front of her again, and the rabbit guy and insect girl stepped out of it. Timetagger rolled to a stop, glowering at them with annoyance.
"Who are you?!" Timetagger exclaimed, balling her hands into fists and positioning herself to project herself forward.
"I am Aljara," the girl said, "wielder of the locust miraculous of affliction."
"I am Mr. Lapin, wielder of the miraculous of time. You can't run from me, I can always travel in time to wherever you decide to spawn. It's a useless fight," the rabbit one said. He definitely sounded young, perhaps the same age as Timetagger was.
"Fellow time traveler," Timetagger bowed mockingly, "how lovely it is to meet you! Move! You're in my way!" She jolted forward, zipping past Mr. Lapin, stretching out a hand to graze his hip. He easily evaded her, now ready for a fight.
"I've observed this fight in my time burrow, I know what you're going to do next!" Mr. Lapin said. Timetagger scoffed.
"Oh yeah? Try predicting this, bitch!" Timetagger said, suddenly skating backwards at an alarming speed and tagging various parisians who tried to run as she went. She quickly disappeared around another road.
"Huh," Aljara huffed, "did you predict that?"
"Uh... nope!" Lapin said, laughing a bit, "I thought she was going to charge us again, to be honest. Alright, why don't you go chase her?"
"With pleasure," Aljara said, bending her knees like a racer at the beginning of a sprint. She launched forward, each stride getting faster and longer than the last, propelling herself down the street with ridiculous speed by the aid of her jumping stilts.
She quickly gained on Timetagger, leaping forward and spinning overhead of the akuma, landing directly in front of Timetagger to force her to a halt. Timetagger's expression flickered into one of fear, having not expected anyone to match her speed like that. She quickly masked it with confidence, propelling herself forward to tough Aljara who responded in accordance, stepping aside and grabbing Timetagger by the wrist.
"What's going on?!" a voice from above called out. Now, Ladybug was leaping from the sky, landing across the street from Aljara and Timetagger.
"Shit," Timetagger groaned, realizing that going back in time meant Ladybug hadn't been tagged yet. This also meant Chat Noir and Queen Bee would be arriving at any moment.
"I've got this under control, don't worry Lady-"
"Who are you?!" Ladybug exclaimed, slight anger masked under her stern tone.
"I'm-"
Timetagger took the opportunity of the distraction to spin herself around and tag Aljara on the thigh, freezing her in time. She skated a few feet away, looking over the frozen girl, unsure of where her miraculous potentially was.
"What did you just do?!" Ladybug exclaimed.
"Allow me to blow your mind!" Timetagger snickered, pulling out the miraculous of the ladybug which she'd stolen from the future of this current present.
"Those are fake, you imbecile!"
"Uh huh?" Timetagger said, slipping the earring under her mask and blindly putting them in her pierced ears. Instantly, Ladybug doubled over, almost as if she were in pain. And from her came a bright pink light as the form of a goddess–Tikki–took form, screaming in the worst agony. Her body was flickering and glowing, stretching and distorting in the most unnatural ways as her body was being torn between the two miraculous.
"Tikki!" Ladybug screamed as if she were on fire.
"RUINATION!" Chat Noir was now on the scene, ascending from above as he released a powerful seismic blast from his hand, obliterating the street below and throwing Timetagger and the others into the rubble of the mass destruction. Timetagger still had her hands on the earrings, which now ripped right through her pierced ears as she fell. As she regained herself, trying to sit up without being able to see through the haze, she could feel blood trickling down her neck from her ears.
"Ugh," Timetagger groaned, squinting up. She hoped the rain would dampen out the haze from the upturned stone, but it wasn't clearing all too fast. However, she could now see a figure standing over her, almost ominously. She tightened her lip, backing away slightly as she tried to make out who it was.
Chat Noir's face was bitter, angry, and psycho. Timetagger had never imagined herself being so close to him before she'd been akumatized, and of course, she never thought she'd see him so angry. She didn't believe that a hero could look so utterly unhinged with just a single, nearly blank, facial expression that carried so many emotions at once.
He leaned over her, giving her no room to stand up. And though this was a perfect opportunity to tag him, Timetagger couldn't get herself to move. Something about Chat Noir standing over her had her frozen in fright. Why should she be afraid of a superhero? It's not like he would kill her! At least, that's what she thought. But his words made her mind flip and reverse everything she thought she once believed.
"Cataclysm," Chat Noir said. Timetagger hadn't even noticed he already had his hand around her neck.
A/N
Who are the two new characters? I'll give you a hint. One has shown up in the canon show multiple times and the other is just a character of a friend's that won't really be around for much of the fic but we love em anyways.
