Steps
Birds chirped overhead. The spring air was bright and smelled of pollen and life and London. The park was deserted except for two teenage boys.
Reed gripped the railing in his hand. He bit his lip slightly and looked up at Venn. "I don't know if this is a good idea. The doctors said-"
Venn snorted loudly and waved a hand. "Since when do I care what they say? I'll help you if you need."
Reed shook his head. "No. Let me try alone."
Venn took a couple steps back. He held is hands behind his back. He kept a close eye on Reed.
Reed pushed with one hand and pulled with the other.
It took several tries and a fair amount of grunting. Before he managed to pull himself up. His right leg shook as his weight was put on it. He wobbled, leaning heavily on the railing and putting most of his weight on his left leg.
A grin slowly spread across Reed's face as he stood there. "I did it!"
Venn grinned as well. His black eyes glittered triumphantly. "See? I knew you could do it."
Reed took a couple shuffling steps toward Venn. He was elated. He would be able to walk again one day.
His right leg collapsed and he fell forward, despite his grip on the railing. Venn leaped forward. He caught Reed under his shoulders.
Reed removed his hands from the railing and held onto Venn's shoulders instead. "I was so close!"
Venn hugged Reed. He laughed quietly. "You'll get there I promise. I'll help you."
Reed sighed and rested his chin on Venn's shoulder. "I don't want to sit down yet..."
Venn made no move to pull away. "That's fine. We can stay here as long as you need." He squeezed Reed a bit, careful of the wounds on his back. "I'm in no hurry. I don't have work to do until sunset anyway."
Reed let out a long breath and looked up at the sky. He couldnt have asked for a better friend than this.
